T O N F I L Y N E W S “There is a great sense of cohesiveness with all of the staff in one place. There is also a feeling of professionalism that pervades the agency,” said Ann Polunsky, Florence Crittenton’s Grant Writer. Additionally, building signage and donor dedications will be mounted to the new buildings in March. One such dedication, is nearly complete, and can be seen when you enter the dining room, newly named Café Elizabeth, formerly known as the dining room or cafeteria. Artist Lori Frisbie painted the colorful mural, which shows a lively café scene along a bustling town street. Donor Recognition Goes Modern, Artistic New Address b For more than three months now, a company appropriately named Thinking Caps has been creating the much-anticipated donor recognition for the Building New Beginnings Campaign. The days of boring plaques are over and the days of artwork are here for recognition pieces. Only small details can be revealed of these rooted figures, these five, six and seven foot wonders that capture the true meaning of what it means to give your support and your heart. They glisten and tower and though cold to the touch are warm with color. They gave me a little party And helped to see me through They knew that I would need it So I’d feel special too “We are so pleased to be able to honor our campaign donors and friends this way. It’s such a beautiful piece of art that truly signifies the meaning of each gift,” said Carrie Walker-Ostroski, Florence Crittenton’s They gave me independence And I have earned their trust Now open and more honest My life is back from the dust Development Director. After more than six months of research and planning, Florence Crittenton is shedding its old skin. Esser Design, a local graphic design firm, has created a new brand for Florence Crittenton, which includes a new logo, new tag-line, new font and new colors. “Hope, Safety, Opportunity and Community are words that have always reflected the image of Florence Crittenton. And now with the new look and image, they are brought to life.” - Linda Volhein The new logo represents growth, success and nurturing and is highlighted by rich tones of green, teal and a purple-blue. The new tag line, Where Hope Comes to Life, fittingly describes a sort of blossoming that develops into the gift of opportunity. This exciting change is being implemented in phases, beginning with a new business system, which includes letterhead, thank you cards etc. The next phase will include building signage, followed by event materials such as invitations and finally the website, new brochures and this newsletter. The last ten years have been a project of the heart. I hope I can walk away knowing it was successful.” F or more than 16 years, Linda Volhein, Executive Director of Florence Crittenton, has been driving the agency to reach a new level and a new standard. Her leadership has taken the agency from nearly closing its doors in 1993, to celebrating its 100-year-mark, to unveiling a state-of-the art campus in 2003. In an interview in January,Volhein revealed what she feels has made it one of the most successful agencies in the Valley. What is Florence Q. Crittenton’s greatest #3: The third step was to begin marketing to stake holders. In 1995, the agency was then stable, but not moving forward. achievement? A. Surviving and thriving in changing times. It’s a tough job, but we’ve been here for more than 106 years. Typically, older organizations are the most vulnerable because they don’t think outside of the box. Q. In the last 16 years, what is your most memorable moment? What makes Florence Q. A. Crittenton unique when compared to other similar non-profits? A. We have always had consistent leadership and stability. We have had a vision and have driven it relentlessly. You just can’t quit on that vision. I think our niche with only girls has also been a valuable component of what makes Florence Crittenton unique. When a girl leaves Florence Crittenton, I typically sit down with her and talk about her future and what she has learned at our agency. Once, a girl told me I changed her life. That meant a lot and I’ll never forget it. Florence Crittenton saved her life and a young girl realized she is important and valuable. Those experiences are what keep me here. Q. When you became Q. How do you explain the Executive Director in 1993, current momentum Florence Crittenton is experiencing? A. This year’s Auxiliary Holiday Party was held on Friday, December 20 and welcomed nearly 100 guests. The festive evening was once again coordinated by Auxiliary member, V’Esser McDonald and included a holiday feast, holiday carols and gifts for all of the attending children and Florence Crittenton girls. A From the Director Auxiliary Florence Crittenton Auxiliary Local jeweler Peter Strebe dressed as Santa Claus. T I think in the last 12 months, Florence Crittenton has really “arrived,” and the driving factors behind that are innovation, quality, passionate people, strong business practices and an accountability to the community and our clients. What do you think the Q. future holds for Florence Crittenton? A. I really believe that our agency is going to be the model for the way a nonprofit is run. Our leadership will be the standard, as well as our constant vision for growth and trying new things. It is important to look at trends and see the future of non-profits. Florence Crittenton 715 West Mariposa Street Phoenix, Arizona 85013 www.florencecrittentonofaz.org Over a 3-day period, with the help of several interested television stations, the entire agency was refurbished. From new paint and carpet to all new furniture, Project Pretty put Florence Crittenton in the community eye. #5: Now that our image was out there and fundraising efforts were underway, the next most important thing was a Board of Directors. Community cultivation was the priority, first to be approached, the Goldwaters. brated its 100-year anniversary. This was the turning point, Florence Crittenton was finally on the map. S A. It was actually a planned, step by step process that took ten years. In 1993, Florence Crittenton was in an emergency situation. #1: The first thing I did was hire an accountant. We cut the budget and took a long hard look at where we were financially in all of our programs and services. #2: Next, we reformatted our programs after taking an in-depth look at how well our programs were being accepted in the community. On Tuesday, December 17, the Board of Directors held their annual Holiday Brenda Sperduti and family at Board Party for the girls at Holiday Party. Florence Crittenton. The evening included a singing performance by the girls, food and drinks and a guest performance by Board Member, Brenda Sperduti and her family. initiate a fundraising program. We hired a Development Director and made Florence Crittenton’s physical image our number one priority. We launched one of our most successful marketing campaigns, Project Pretty. #6: In 1997, Florence Crittenton cele- what steps did you take to begin moving Florence Crittenton in the direction of a successful business? Board of Directors #4: At this point, we felt the need to ince that turning point, Florence Crittenton has continued to round the curve. For ten years, the vision of Florence Crittenton has been driven relentlessly and those directly involved in its success never quit. In 2003, the vision will come to fruition when Florence Crittenton unveils its new campus and a new future. Once again proving that its steadfast mission will stand the test of time. Since January, the Board of Directors has been focusing on the growth of the agency, with its new and expanded services, including the opening of the Living & Learning Home and the growth of the residential program and charter school. In order to support these needs, the board has been actively pursuing new friends and supporters through the Charles Crittenton Society and several spring events, including the Grand Opening. g Non-Profit U.S. Postage PAID Phoenix, Arizona Permit No. 2328
