Connecting the Reader to your computer Connect the MagTek 2241 Check Reader to your computer. If your computer does not have a Serial Port, the use of a Serial-to-USB converter cable may be required. Connect your MagTek reader to your computer on COM port 3. If your reader installs automatically on a different COM port, you will need to change the COM port to 3 in order for the device to function properly with eCheckTrac. See “Change COM port number in Windows” at the end of this document. 2. Open the MagTek MICRbase program, and Click on Communicate > Communication Setup. Continued Page | 2 3. Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and double click on USB-to-Serial COM Port to open its properties 4. In the Properties box, Click on Port Settings tab. Page | 8 5. In Port Settings, click on the Advanced button. 6. Now in the Advanced Port Settings, any port number may be assigned. Click OK on all Property Windows. Page | 9 Using 32-bit Internet Explorer If the check reader never indicates “ready” in eCheckTrac (stuck in the “loading” state), you may have to use the 32 bit version of Internet explorer. If you are using IE 11 or greater, both the 32 and 64 bit versions will work. However, older versions may not function properly in the 64 bit browser. If you are using a 64-bit Windows computer, there are two versions of Internet Explorer (IE) on your computer. The 64bit version will be the default. While eCheckTrac works with either version, your MagTek reader will work only with the 32-bit version. Follow the directions here to create a shortcut to the 32-bit version. 1. Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\ 2. In this folder, locate the file “iexplore.exe” 3. Right-click on this file, and choose Send To | Desktop (create shortcut) Page | 10
