HEY EVERYONE! IT’S AUGUST! WHERE IS THE SUMMER FLYING? I CAN’T
BELIEVE WE’RE ALREADY THINKING ABOUT OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER,
AND WE HAVEN’T EVEN LIVED THROUGH SEPTEMBER!!!
Is this what my mother meant when she said time flies
when you’re older?!! I guess I’m older now!!
We must have been flying through our “proofing”
when we printed July’s Word Search. We apologize
for the confusion. And boy(!) did we hear from
you!! So happy to see how many of you enjoy our
little puzzles, but oh my(!), so sorry for our faux
pas. It served as a reminder that I’m only human,
and humans make mistakes. We made good on
that Word Search this month by printing the puzzle AND the answers correctly. (See page 27.) I
double-checked. This is one mistake I won’t make
again, hopefully!
Do you think it was a mistake for To Kill a Mockingbird’s Harper Lee to publish her
sequel, Go Set a Watchman? It’s
gotten such mixed reviews because
of what is revealed about Atticus
Finch. Remember he was the wonderful hero as portrayed by Gregory Peck in the movie. I haven’t read
the new book yet, but our Jerry
Gervase shares his mixed emotions
about turning the pages in Lee’s
latest novel. If you’ve followed the
“talk” about this piece you know
he’s not alone. What do you think? You can read more
on page 20.
And please take note of the new advertisers between
our covers. As always, you’ll find some great food, services, and “stuff” that will make your life all that more
comfortable and fun. Don’t forget to check the business
card section. This month and every month you’ll find
all kinds of professionals able and willing to help with
all sorts of remodeling, repairs, etc. You need a plumber? Check our business card section. A mattress? You
can find that and more starting on page 44.
So last week, I took a girls’ weekend with some of my
favorite ladies including Dorothy, Beth and Michele.
(Dorothy is the “Queen” girl.) We had a lovely time.
And while I was down the shore with my bffs I met a
fan of the magazine, Andrea. She gave me such a hug
and was so complimentary. I was in seventh heaven.
It made my weekend even more
special than it already was. So,
“Thank You Andrea!” P.S. I promised her a shout-out.
Linda
Allen and I checked out a “newish” diner in the area,
York Diner on York Road in Warminster. You can read
the results of our visit on page 28. I’ll leave you with a
hint: Feta cheese and ice cream. And don’t say “yuck”
until you read my review!

That’s it for now. As always,
there’s more inside. We’re
working on September’s issue.
Look for a new column by Laura
Blanche, M.Ed. She’ll be offering some hands-on insight vis à
vis the college preparation and
admission process. It hopes to make a very stressful
process less so.
For now, though, we’ve still got plenty of summer
sunshine ahead. Enjoy and relax, and we’ll see you in
September. (Sounds like a song!)

Travels
with Allen
more
by Allen Herman
IT WAS A SATURDAY EVENING IN JULY AND WE WERE
HAVING DINNER WITH FRIENDS. WE COULDN’T FIND A
DECENT RESTAURANT THAT WASN’T PACKED. FINALLY,
AFTER DRIVING AROUND LIKE A SATELLITE IN ORBIT,
WE GAVE UP AND HEADED HOME.
Linda had volunteered to create one of her famous “last
minute” gourmet meals for the weary and hungry travelers, but before we arrived home we spotted Jersey’s
Tomatoe Pies & Bistro in the Pheasant Valley Shopping
Center on Buck Road in Holland.
The Center’s parking lot looked empty so we drove in
to investigate. Eager to prevent our fearless editor from
having to end up in the kitchen, we decided to check out
this neighborhood bistro. The restaurant wasn’t crowded
and it was very quiet. (Great for those of us who wear
hearing aids!) No lines. No commotion. Meal Time!
I will tell you that we all had some of the best Italian
food we have ever tasted. It was great... plentiful, tasty
and quite reasonable. When I met the owner I encouraged him to start advertising. I told him the restaurant
and his great entrees and wild selection of pizzas were
too good to keep a “semi secret.”
He’s a great cook and I’m a great salesman. Look for
his ad next month! But don’t wait to visit his restaurant. This is a good little neighborhood bistro and these
types of restaurants are always fun family places ...even
in August. Try their veal. Home run!
Speaking of food, let me go astray for a minute and
mention kitchens. MKBD has advertised with us for
years and years. His work is top-notch and his prices
are REALLY “combative.” Recently we discovered that

son’s home. In fact his son, Cole, a computer whiz and
hipster with music and radio connections, is now getting us ready to make our magazines “face bookers.”
the very people who went with us to Jersey’s Tomato Pies had neighbors, on both sides, who had new
kitchens installed in their homes by none other than
MKBD. When Linda and I met one of these neighbors
the husband and wife raved about the firm. She loved
their creativity and he loved the prices. Nothing more
to be said.
Speaking of children, Willow Grove Day Camp has a
promotion where parents who sign up early for next year
are being offered a substantial discount. As I have said
in earlier articles, all of my children have attended the
camp and both of my boys also worked there. So I decided I would preregister my eight month old grandson
in advance. Hey, a discount is a discount. Uncle Howie
hinted I might be a bit premature.
I never knew much about roofs. I knew they lasted, if
installed properly, for a long time and cost a great deal
of money to replace. I also knew that if they were not
repaired or replaced when required a great deal of damage could occur to both a home’s structure and interior.
I also was aware of “roof streaking.”
When I met Gary Sells, the owner of C&C Roofing, I
got a real education. I now have a “Salesman’s Doctorate in the Big Top.” I learned about different types
of shingles and materials, and how long they lasted.
More than enhancing the appearance (and value) of
homes, I discovered that certain materials and tiles can
save big bucks in energy costs. Most important, I came
to respect Gary and his son, and their knowledge and
ability. They are more than qualified ... I learned to trust
them. They are a family of “mensches!” And as I write
this article they are replacing the roof on our youngest
More on kids and camps and food... A new restaurant
has opened on Second Street Pike in the Redwood
Shopping Center called Flip-n Shakes. It’s a little
beehive with all kinds of basic… and some really wild
… hamburgers, hotdogs, cheese melts and lots more.
They also serve some great ice cream sundaes and
shakes. It’s a really fun place with bright colors and
good food at reasonable prices. And it’s a great place to
keep in mind when the kids are back from camp. The
whole family will enjoy this spot. Tell them I sent you.
Before it slips my mind let me remind all of the Jewish
Holidays that occur mid-September. Famous Deli on

Buck Road has new ownership and is primed for bringing holiday favorites to your table. Or you can dine in...
but whether it’s brisket or matzoh ball soup, kugel or
stuffed chicken, Famous Deli on Buck Road can make
your holiday preparation easy and delicious. And don’t
forget about their great deli selection, everyday!
If you’re looking for a nice piece of Judaica for a gift
or for your own home let me strongly recommend Artisan’s Marketplace off of County Line Road. Everything
in this large studio is made in America and some of it
is just unbelievable. I like to send a salesman in to deal
with the owner, Domenic, because every time I visit
I end up spending more than I am selling. All of their
“stuff” in just great and their Jewish subjects and the
work on display are really wonderful.
Also, on the subject of the Jewish holidays … head
on over to the Village Shires Pharmacy for cards and
kosher candy and lots more. I really like this store. The
woman who owns the location is cheerful and effervescent, and her store reflects her colorful personality. This
is really a good spot to keep on your list.
Our friend Chris at the Bristol Amish Market in Bristol
is having a huge tent sale during August. This Market
is great! They have all kinds of food and an assortment

of Pennsylvania Dutch gifts and furniture. Chris also
offers a fabulous line of Pennsylvania Dutch kitchens.
Trust me, he sells quality!
The Market is in Bristol, right off the exit of the
PA Turnpike. It has great parking and some fantastic
items. Chris only runs a “tent sale” once a year.
It is special. He loads up with a huge selection and
offers the best once-a-year deals. If nothing else, I
urge you to visit the Market and Chris because it is
just plain fun!
Back to food again, we hope you’ve noticed that Tony
Lukes has opened in Warminster on York Road. Who
doesn’t like Tony Lukes? Now you can “feel” South
Philly, the Phillies and Eagles without the long drive.
You don’t have to park in the middle of the street
(South Philly style) because they have a real honest-to-goodness parking lot. They open early for breakfast and they remain open VERY late in the evening on
the weekends.
That’s about it for August. I have a lot more I wanted
to mention but space is limited. It’s enough driving
and enough food! I’m pooped!! Enjoy the rest of the
summer and stay safe. Happy Labor Day to all. See you
in September.

Eyeglasses DO ENHANCE
Sports Performance
Sports glasses are eyeglasses specially designed to fit securely and comfortably during physical activity, keep your
eyes safe, and enhance your vision to give you an extra
performance “edge” in the sports you love. In most sports,
vision drives performance. So to excel during competition, you should make sure your eyesight is in top shape.
Even if you have 20/20 vision, the right sports eyewear
can reduce glare and enhance contrast to help you see
even better and react faster.
Research Finds Sports Glasses Boost Performance
Sports vision specialists agree that sports eyewear can
have a profound effect on athletic performance. In 2003,
a British sports vision study evaluated the effect of mildly
blurred vision on the performance of Wimbledon tennis
players and UK national clay pigeon shooting champions.
The tennis players’ performance was evaluated by how
accurately they could return a ball to an archery target set at
the opposite baseline. The rifle shooters were judged by the
number of clay pigeons they hit. Overall, the tennis players
and shooters demonstrated a 25 percent worsening of performance when their vision was only slightly blurred. Since this
landmark study, other sports vision researchers have
confirmed the importance of proper vision correction
Sport
and visual skills in sports performance. From ongoing
studies, experts have identified some of the key features
needed in sports glasses to provide maximum benefits.
Check below to see if your vision is getting the help it
needs in your preferred sports arena!!
As is the case when selecting any eyewear, in any situation, be sure to work with a qualified optometrist or
optician. They can address any concerns you may have
and help you in choosing just the right eyeglasses for your
sport of choice.

Remembering
ATTICUS FINCH
by Jerry Gervase
I WOULD PUT HARPER LEE’S TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
ON ANY PERSONAL LIST OF FAVORITE BOOKS.
IT MIGHT EVEN BE AT THE VERY TOP OF THE LIST IF
I LIMITED IT TO ONLY NOVELS.
It is “Christmas in July” was my first reaction upon
hearing of the publication of Ms. Lee’s new novel.
After 55 years, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, a
book Oprah Winfrey called America’s novel, has finally
written a sequel. Go Set a Watchman was released on
July 14. The publisher ordered a first print run of two
million copies.
Readers’ high expectations for Lee’s new novel are
deservedly high since Mockingbird not only won the
Pulitzer Prize, it was voted “Best Novel of the Century” in a poll by Library Journal. Harper Lee was
awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her
contribution to literature. Sales for Mockingbird surpassed 40 million copies.
The book is already creating a buzz among Harper
Lee fans. Our small local library has ordered six
copies and has 20 requests for the book.
I was ready to join the waiting with bated breath prepub crowd and order a copy until I read a review of the
new book. It wasn’t a negative review, but it describes
the changes in Atticus Finch 20 years after Mockingbird. I did not like what has become of this literary role
model. Let me explain.
Cynthia Fernandes, of Pilgrim’s Way Book
Store in Carmel said she has ordered forty
copies. “Since we’re a small store, we usually
order a couple of copies at a time of a new novel,” she said. “So the number we’ve ordered is
quite significant.”
My admiration for the character, Atticus Finch, was not
diminished by the movie. While reading the book I had
pictured the tall taciturn actor, Gregory Peck in the role

Continued from page 20
of the resolute small town lawyer standing steadfast
against the racial prejudice that had condemned a black
man before his trial had started. No one else embodied
the image of Finch I had created in my mind’s eye as
Peck did. The studio’s original choice for the Finch role
was Rock Hudson. I’m glad Hollywood got it right for
one of my all time favorite films.
Although the story is about racial prejudice and Finch’s
integrity in taking an unpopular stance by defending a
black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, it is
also about the innocence of widower Finch’s two young
children: Scout, a six year old girl, and Jem, a 10 year old
boy, and how that innocence is intruded upon by the trial.
That innocence is captured by Director Robert Mulligan’s opening shot over the film’s credits. The shot
shows an overhead view of a small girl opening and
peering into an old cigar box filled with childhood trinkets and treasures. Then in the best use of extreme closeup I had seen in movies, the camera slowly tracks along
the assortment of items in the cigar box. I don’t remember them all, but there were several striped marbles, an
Indian Head and a Lincoln head penny, a broken pocket
watch on a chain, a harmonica, and a silver whistle.
The children who think their father is an ordinary man
who can’t do anything but explain things better than
most people, discover he is the best shot in the county,
and his compassionate defense of the defendant wins
him the respect and admiration of the children.
In Go Set A Watchman Atticus Finch has become a
bigot, with repugnant views on race and segregation.
He is the antithesis of the Atticus Finch I admired in
Mockingbird. The book review states “The depiction of
Atticus in Watchman makes for disturbing reading, and
for Mockingbird fans, it’s especially disorienting.”
I will read the book eventually. For now, though, I prefer
to keep my memory of Atticus Finch intact and not be
disoriented by who he has become. There is a scene in
“Mockingbird” where Finch tells his son, Jem, how his
own father told him it was a sin to kill a mockingbird
because, “Well, I reckon because mockingbirds don’t do
anything but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat
people’s gardens, don’t nest in the corncrib, they don’t do
one thing but just sing their hearts out for us.”
That is how I want to remember Atticus Finch: a gentle
father, an honorable advocate for the oppressed. I’ll put
a hold on his dissonant characterization in Watchman
while remembering the sweet music of a mockingbird.

more. And it’s done with the panache that only a diner
can achieve.
In fact, Allen and I have visited York Diner a few times.
We stopped by almost on the first day it opened. Our
food was good, but service back then was a bit “iffy”
and we decided it was too early to make a final judgment vis à vis this newcomer to the dining scene. We
heard reports from our neighbors, suggesting things
had changed, encouraging us to revisit what seems to
be developing into a real hotspot on York Road. And so
we did; re-visit the York Diner.
Immediately, Allen had a special appreciation for how
the seating was arranged. He liked that the tables were
spaciously separated, not cramped and close to each
other. You know, my husband is a big man and can be
a bit sensitive when tables and chairs are bunched up.
There’s no fear of bumping into other seated diners
as you walk through this restaurant! He also liked the
color scheme. He’s a “blue” person and remarked on
the light blue walls and subdued lighting... it brought a
calming mood to the dining experience. (Ok, I get it.)
But I was more interested in the food and, perhaps, the
service. My mind was put at ease as soon as we walked
in. We were escorted to our table and immediately were
welcomed by two lovely, happy servers. Trainee, Renee
and Instructor-Waitress, Maggie, were right on the mark
providing water, extra napkins, offering suggestions.
They were friendly and helpful, and anxious to make
our experience a good one. (I believe it’s the first time
in a long time I haven’t had to ask for extra napkins!)
So I mentioned how extensive the menu is... that can be a
problem when you’re aleady a bit slow in ordering! A quick
perusal at the tables around me showed heaping burgers,
a mouth watering open face hot roast turkey possibility, a
great looking some-kind-of-salad option and a delicious
stack of the largest pancakes I have ever seen. What’s a girl
to do when she has so many options and a dining partner
who isn’t going to share!!! (Yup, that’s Allen.)

Anyway, as pleasant as our servers were, we had to
finally place our order... Allen ordered a chicken dish
with spinach, cherry tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese
over linguini. The sauce was lemony and light, the perfect accompaniment to the tasty roll Allen gobbled up!
And he had a vegetable soup that was filled with vegetables. (P.S. His chicken dish was filled with chunks of
chicken and was so large that it provided two lunches
the following days.)
I saw blue fish was available, and trying to be “good”
this night I figured fish was the way to go. My portion
was substantial, the fillet thick, AND it was just what
I wanted. For my salad I chose the Greek salad. Truth
be told, I probably could have stopped eating after the
salad. It was served with hefty portions of Feta cheese,
something my none-sharing partner enjoyed! The dressing was light and tasty, and it was a great choice for the
fish. My meal came with two veggies. I asked for the
baked potato and broccoli. Our very sweet servers said
broccoli wasn’t available but they would make sure I got
some anyway. (Wow! How often does that happen?!)
We were stuffed. But were asked about dessert. Oh,
dessert. I chose ice cream, vanilla and chocolate. Allen
chose rice pudding. Here’s a secret: please choose
the ice cream. You’ll have enough ice cream for three
people to share. And it’s good!! Yes, my fully satiated
stomach definitely perked up when I was served my big
bowl of ice cream. (Dessert is funny like that, isn’t it?)
We had a lovely meal at the York Dinner.... we’ve enjoyed others since. We understand they have some terrific breakfast specials. And if you drive by the restaurant during “breakfast hours,” you’ll notice they’re
quite busy. And remember the pancakes I mentioned?
Well you can get those pancakes and other breakfast
fare anytime during the day. And isn’t that what a good
diner is about; getting the kind of food you want when
you want it?
So check out the York Diner. There’s plenty of parking
and it’s on York Road. Ask for Renee. She’s probably a
full-trained waitress by now and you won’t have to ask
for extra napkins. She knows you’ll need them and will
give them to you before you even ask for them! And
THAT’S service. At least I think so!
Enjoy and let them know you heard about them “between our covers.”

What’s Cookin’
Looking for a new “place” for those delicious Jersey tomatoes you can
buy now? How ‘bout something yummy using the season’s best fruits like
mango, papaya and raspberries? Look no further. This month we offer
some great recipes to add some “spice” to your summer table. (Yup! Some
of these dishes are a little spicy. And you can make them even spicier!!!)
So start picking those veggies and those fruits, AND those outstanding
Jersey tomatoes. They’re summer’s special gift that shouldn’t go unappreciated. Happy cooking and enjoy!
Marinated Vegetable Salad
5 C. broccoli florets
2 cucumbers, peeled & sliced
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 6-oz. can sliced black olives, drained
1/2 C. Parmesan cheese
1 tsp. minced fresh parsley
1 8-oz. bottle Italian dressing
1 12-on basket cherry tomatoes
Bring chicken broth and water to boil. Add rice. Bring to
boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook until liquid is
absorbed, about 20 minutes. (You can use quick cooking/
instant rice also. Just follow directions on box for preparation and eliminate chicken broth, 1/2 C. water and long
grain rice.)
Combine all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate overnight,
stirring occasionally. When ready to serve, season to taste.
P.S. You might not need an entire bottle of dressing. Start
with less first. Use your discretion.
Serve warm-ish or refrigerate. Should be room temperature.
Jersey Tomato & Potato Salad
11/2 lbs. red potatoes
1/4 C. plus 2 tsp. olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 Tbsp. chopped garlic
2 large tomatoes, diced
5 tsp. red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp. minced fresh basil (This is the secret!)
1/4 tsp. oregano
Cook potatoes until just tender. Drain and cool. Cut potatoes
into small pieces and place in large bowl.
Heat 2 Tbsp. oil in skillet. Add onion and sauté‚ until translucent. Add garlic and cook 1 minute longer. Add onion mixture to potatoes. Add remaining 1/4 C. oil, tomatoes, vinegar,
basil and oregano. Toss gently to combine. Season to taste.
Black Bean and Rice Salad
2 14 1/2-oz. cans chicken broth
(can use equal amount of vegetarian boullion)
1/2 C. water
1 1-lb pkg. long-grain rice
2 15-oz. cans black beans, drained & rinsed
2 red bell peppers, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 medium red onion, diced
1 medium bunch cilantro, chopped
1/2 C. olive oil
3 Tbsp. orange juice
2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
2 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. chili powder
34 • www.theuptightsuburbanite.com • August 2015
Transfer rice to large bowl and fluff with fork. Mix in black
beans, bell peppers, red onion, chopped cilantro, oil, orange
juice, vinegar, cumin and chili powder. Season to taste with
salt and pepper.
Tropical Chicken Salad
4 boneless chicken breasts
1/4 C. olive oil
3 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
1 tsp. grainy Dijon mustard
6 C. salad greens
1 papaya, peeled, seeded, chopped
1 mango, peeled, pitted, chopped
1 6-oz. raspberries
1/2 C. chopped toasted walnuts
Preheat oven 475OF. Place chicken in baking pan and season.
Bake until cooked through about 20-25 minutes. Cool. Cut
into bite-size pieces.
Whisk olive oil, vinegar and mustard, Combine chicken,
salad greens, papaya, mango and raspberries in large bowl.
Add dressing and toss well. When serving, sprinkle with
toasted walnuts.
Chicken with Balsamic Vinegar
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 C. finely chopped onion
2 Tbsp. chopped garlic
11/4 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts
cut into 1-inch pieces
2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar (No balsamic vinegar in the house?
Use red wine vinegar.)
1 tsp. grainy Dijon mustard
Heat oil in pan. Add onion and garlic and sauté until just
about tender. Add chicken and cook until chicken is brown.
Stir in vinegar and mustard. Continue cooking until chicken
is tender and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper.

I fear the numerous minorities and their manipulation
of our legislature and executive branches of government. I fear the judicial system the most. I also fear the
press. The three branches of government institutions
and the “fourth estate” are more of a threat to our way
of life, in my opinion, than any external threat we face.
Pardon me for saying this, but at times I view these
organizations as the “Anti-Christ.” Much that is legal
sure as hell is not moral or ethical... at least not in
today’s world.
While I am not opposed to immigration, something is
“rotten in Denmark” when people can just pour into our
nation, uncontested, and many cities defy the federal
government only to become “sanctuary cities” for illegal criminal aliens.
While I am not in favor of stopping women from having
abortions in their FIRST trimester, something is not right
when a doctor is threatened with the loss of his or her license because he or she refuses to perform abortions on
women in their third trimesters. And when people who
receive taxpayer-funding can legally sell parts of fetuses
with impunity… something is horribly wrong.
So despite warnings from friends and readers alike,
who fear challenging what is occurring in our great
land, I choose to write. I choose, at times, to use this
tiny publication as a vehicle to urge as many as possible to stand up for what they believe. Fight back. Fight
back like many of our parents and grandparents did in
the past. Fight back, despite apprehension. The America that is rapidly disappearing needs all of our help.
But it doesn’t end there. Did you know that in Oregon
children can get taxpayer-funded sex changes without
the knowledge of or permission of their parents? Something is really %#@ wrong. And when twelve year olds
in the state of Washington can get taxpayer-funded
birth control devices without the knowledge or consent
of their parents … we have a real problem. At least I
think we have a problem.
While I am not opposed to gay marriage, I believe it is
a monstrous miscarriage of justice that a young baker
can be fined $135,000 for merely saying she would not
bake a wedding cake for a gay couple… IF ASKED …
because it violates her religious convictions. (The gay
wedding violates her religious convictions.) Something
is wrong.
So I sit home and watch these endless horrors unfold
on TV or read about them in the large number of dailies
we receive. I just shudder. How in the hell can this
insanity really be happening in this nation!

Recently I read about a man in Montana petitioning the
Court for the right to marry his mistress who he loves
as much as his wife. And the Obama Administration has
just altered the path to citizenship so that new, naturalized Americans can refuse to serve in the armed forces
without even stating why!
The horrors just go on and on. And increasingly fewer
people are even willing to discuss these nightmares.
They are both afraid and feel that they have no control of the insanity that is taking over the Land. Many
have stopped listening or even caring. They really have
“turned off.”
IS NOW
Haggerty, Goldberg, Schleifer, & Kupersmith, P.C.
A lot of people see clearly the retribution society, the
government and the press places upon objectors. Many
believe that since they can’t change anything why should
they bother to stick out their chins.
I can’t live with this view. It’s not my nature. I will continue to fight back and have decided to launch my own
campaigns where possible.
What can little Al do to effectively protest?
I’ll take one issue at a time and promote that view
through action. Perhaps others who wish not to lead but
are willing to follow, to spread the word … will urge
others to follow suit.
So I have begun “my” tilting windmills ... one at a time.
I am “avoiding” San Francisco. The government of this
city by the Bay should be made to understand that their
weird, dangerous, illegal, illogical and cavalier actions
are harming ALL, legal and illegal, who reside in America. Until the city changes its policies as a Sanctuary City
I will not visit the city, attend any conventions or other
social activities they house. Nor will I purchase any
products that are manufactured in the city. I have notified my travel agent that I don’t even want to be routed
through their airport.
These types of actions are not original. They are strategies I learned from the NAACP and they seem to obtain
their objectives.
Perhaps others who read this agree and will pass it on.
Maybe others will begin to do things such as I am doing
or launch their own plans to protest. It’s time for all
concerned citizens to fight back. “Not trying” is not an
option for me. And perhaps, it’s not yours. I hope so. Let
all “non heros” start tilting windmills together so they
actually fall, for real.
Allen Herman

It’s Time for ALL of Us to
STEP UP TO THE PLATE
W
hen I was a mere tot I lived in a
tiny one bathroom, non-air conditioned “airlight” row home
in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia.
WWII had just ended and the men, and a
few women, were returning from the War
Zones in Europe and Asia. It was a very hot
summer. Air conditioning, as I said, was not
yet common, and most people sat on folding
chairs on the sidewalks in the evening hours
to escape the heat.
Normally the parents and young kids were the first to
get up and head indoors to the “saunas.” The returned
veterans often would sit outside much later in the
evening. Ultimately their discussions would involve the
War and their individual experiences. Frequently my
parents would let me sleep on the lawn (slightly larger
in size than a ping pong table) of our home on “C”
Street. When this occurred I would listen to them laugh
and retell their own experiences endlessly.
Often, as the hour grew later, things would get serious.
In a sense I now understand that it was like “group
therapy.” Lou Gave told how he had been on two ships
that had been sunk by Kamikaze aircraft off of Okinawa. Tony Luca had been blown out of two Sherman
tanks while battling under Patton. Still another member
of the group told how he had been shot down over the
Pacific during the Battle for Guadalcanal. Len Wagner
had enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was just
sixteen and had “island hopped” until they dropped
the Bomb. Skinny Sunny complained that he spent the
War “stateside.” On occasion they would mention Asa
Pulenski and Kenny Kaplan, guys in the neighborhood,
who did not return to share their experiences.
There were more tales to be told, but I was very young
and usually fell asleep long before their marathon
sessions ended. But this I know, these men, despite
the humor, the jokes, the tall tales and the kidding, had
been scared … perhaps petrified is a better word … by
what they had experienced. The later the hour, the more
their real fear was exposed. Still they had done what
had to be done.
Later in life, with the advent of maturity, I came to realize that to a man, they had stayed the course because
they were defending their families, their nation and
their way of life from vicious enemies. They did what
they had to do (and sometimes what they did not want
to do) because they saw little, if any, other course of action. So many of these “non heroes” literally marched
into the jaws of hell to do what had to be done. And
the ones that survived the nightmare returned to a most
appreciative nation.
I start my column this month with this prelude because
unlike the threat posed by the Germans or the Japanese,
I believe our greatest enemy today is not China or Russia or even ISIS. Our greatest danger, in this humble
writer’s opinion, is from within.
