TMB½relx Page.3 KhmerPost USA participates in local media panel discussion What is the role of the media in terms of reflecting the culture of a community? That question was a major topic of discussion on April 1st, as Roger and Soben Pin of the KhmerPost USA join Lowell Sun Editor Jim Campanini and WCAP Radio owner/operator Sam Poulten in participating in a panel talk about the local media scene before a class of UMass Lowell Community Psychology students in Professor Bill Berkowitz’s class. The hour-long discussion featured a mix of prearranged topics and student questions. Much of the day’s talk was focused on the Cambodian population in Lowell and how each of the outlets represented reach out to the community. Roger Pin spoke about the KhmerPost USA’s emphasis on covering local stories within the Cambodian community as a unique feature that sets the KhmerPost USA apart from other Khmer language newspapers that focused more on news from Cambodia. Campanini discussed the challenges that a mainstream newspaper has when it comes to covering specific ethnic communities while maintaining their broader appeal. Technology was another major factor influencing the news business today. While paper subscriptions are decreasing, Campanini points to the large increase in online readers at the Lowell Sun and partner websites. Poulten likewise discussed the pros and cons of the increasing shift towards online streaming of radio programming rather than the traditional over the air method. The KhmerPost has recently expanded its digital presence both through an updated website format and increased social media presence. The discussion remained engaging throughout with students asking challenging questions and panelists challenging the students as well, including a particular word puzzle that Poulten stumped the crowd with. The session ended on a note of promise with all three media outlets pledging to discuss ways to collaborate on the important question of reaching out to Lowell’s ethnic communities. nayksarB½t’manExμrpus nignayk LÚsan; saRsþacarü nignisSitmhaviTüal½yyUm:asCYbnwgnayksarB½t’man naykviTüú AM WCAP subinþ Bnül;BIkarRKb;RKgkaEstExμrpussl;GgÁRbCuM Lowell Elder Care Celebrates Cambodian New Year LÚEvlEGldWEXrR)arB§BiFIbuNücUlqñaMExμr Ladies celebrate Cambodian New Year with Fashion Show éf¶TI14 ExemsaqñaM2014 Caéf¶buNü cUlqñaMfμIénRbCaCnExμrEdlCaPasaExμr eK ehAbuNüenHfa CabuNücUlqñaMExμr. buNü cUlqñaEM xμrCaeBlEdlqñafM cIμ lU mkdl;. mCÄmNÐlEfTaMmnusScas;LÚEvl b¤LÚEvlGil dWEXr)anR)arB§kmμviFIRbéBNIenH ry³eBl 1s)aþh_ ehIy)ancab;epþImtaMgBIéf¶TI13 Exemsa enAcMeBlEdlRcÚtkat;ehIy KWkñúg eBlEdlRbCaCnTTYlePaKplEpøeQI nig bEnøBIdMNaMksikmμmunrdUvvsSacUlmkdl;. eTaHbICaRbCaCnExμrGaemrikaMg minEmnCa ksikrtamEbbburaNk¾eday k¾RKYsar nigmitþ PkþienAEtCYbCuMKña edIm,IR)arB§RbéBNITMenom buNüenH bMeBjedaymðÚbGaharExμr CaeRcIn dUcCar)aMCUnBr nigkar[BrRBHsgÇ. Lowell Elder Care Adult Day Health Care Center celebrated the holiday with a week – long of holiday traditions and events beginning April 13th. Which in Cambodia is the end of the harvesting season, when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor before the rainy season begins. Although many Cambodian Americans are not the traditional Cambodian farmers, family and friends still gather for an opportunity to celebrate the Cambodian culture, usually filled with Cambodian food such as the mouth-watering “sach-go ang” or beef skewers, the lovely sounds accompanying the traditional “robams” or dances, and the humming of the Buddhist monks’ chants. The celebration at Lowell Elder Care was a reminder to those who have been uprooted from their homes in Cambodia of the rich culture and traditions that still exists. It is also the small thread that allows the newer Cambodian American generation to hold on to a piece of their identity. A good time was had by all. Coakley said the greatest economic asset of the Commonwealth is our skilled an educated workforce and we have to continue to strengthen that through improved education. She said she was proud of what she’s done as Attorney General in holding big banks accountable for their shoddy practices during the foreclosure crisis and in challenging the Defense of Marriage Act nationally (it was in a case brought by Coakley’s office that the US Supreme Court held DOMA unconstitutional). Finally, she stressed the importance of improving behavioral health and mental health treatment. Obtaining care for those types of conditions should be as available and as good as treatment for diabetes and heart disease. Leland Cheung, candidate for Lt Governor and current Cambridge City Councilor, explained that he is the son of Chinese immigrants and that his family frequently visited China. The experience of his parents and his own exposure to China has made him appreciate the freedoms we have in America even more. Barry Finegold, candidate for Treasurer and current State Senator, explained that he grew up in a middle class family, that he worked multiple jobs to pay his way through college and law school and that while he was originally attracted to Washington and national politics, a mentor convinced him that the place to make a difference in people’s lives is at the local level. Barry returned to reduced the impact of the foreclosure crisis and will reduce the problems faced as our aging population reaches retirement age. As Treasurer, he would ensure that our pension funds reflect our values so he would divest from fossil fuel investments yet he wouldn’t act restlessly because he understands the importance of a financially secure pension system. He also promised to have a state lottery that “works for and not against people.” Michael Sullivan, candidate for Middlesex District Attorney and current Middlesex Clerk of Courts, explained that his first job in the DA’s office was in Leland Cheung lIELn Qwg QreQμaHsRmab;tYnaTI GPi)alrdærg Cheung earned degrees from Stanford, Harvard and MIT and became a venture capitalist, but he said the lessons of his youth drove him to get involved in public service so he ran for and was elected to the Cambridge city council. There, he’s been a bridge builder who seeks common solutions to problem. He said his experience as a local elected official is unique among the candidates for Lieutenant Governor; the state, he says, faces the same challenges as does Cambridge. He said our goal should be to make the innovation economy work for everyone, not just the venture capitalists. )arI hVajhÁÚl Qr eQμaHsRmab;tYnaTIhirBaØik Barry Finegold his hometown of Andover, was elected selectman, then state representative, and then state senator. About 10 people sustained minor injuries and at least four people were bloodied with wounds to their head after the helmeted security force attacked the crowd with batons and kicked them as municipal police looked on. Sok Penhvuth, deputy Daun Penh district governor, ordered the attack, telling the security guards to beat anyone who was taking photographs without a press card. Along with Kim Vutha, head of the district security force, Mr. Penhvuth pointed out offending photographers, shouting "fight them, fight them." Mr. Vutha and City Hall spokesman Long Dimanche declined to comment when reached by telephone. Srey Samai, 28, sustained wounds to the face during the security guards' unprompted assault. "I came here for freedom of expression and did nothing wrong. I don't even have a camera," he said. The attack came after CNRP lawmaker-elect Mu Sochua led a one-woman protest inside Freedom Park, calling for justice for garment factory workers who were killed by military police in early January. "We come here to talk about the garment workers who have been killed and to find justice for them. The government is the killer," she said after entering a southern corner of the park. Ms. Sochua has previously attempted to enter Freedom Park five times over the past two weeks-only to be blocked by security guards and police-in a campaign to spotlight the government's arbitrary enforcement of a ban on public protests. She was eventually carried out of the park yesterday morning by security guards. Reached by telephone, Ms. Sochua said that her success in making it into the park to deliver a speech was worth the trouble. "[It was] totally worth it," she said. "It is the truth and the power of one that really scares them." Cambodian University Wins Prize for Firefighting Robots By Hay Pisey | April 21, 2014 Cambodia's beleaguered fire department may have a future high-tech solution to its problems after a team of young scientists from Norton University competing in the 4th Malaysian International Robot Competitions (MIRoC) last week placed third in the Fire Fighting Robot category. The annual event, held this year from April 11 to 13 at Universiti Malaysia Perlis, involved robotics teams from 19 universities around the world. Robots built by students at Norton University's College of Science are displayed at the 4th Malaysian International Robot Competitions in Perlis, Malaysia. (Lay Romnea) The Fire Fighting Robot was the main event among various competitions. The robots were designed to move around an imitation house, rescuing as many "victims" (ping-pong balls) and extinguishing as many "fires" (candles) as possible within three minutes. The Norton team's robot navigated a fiery path to the semifinal before their hopes of winning were finally extinguished. But despite the success, it may be some years before robots replace Cambodia's human firefighters. "The two robots we took to compete in Malaysia were very simple, small robots weighing only 1.5 kg and measuring only 250 millimeters in height and 130 millimeters across," said Lay Romnea, coordinator of research at Norton's college of science and leader of the prize-winning team. Each robot was equipped with a suction motor to collect the ping-pong balls in its path and a small helicopter-like fan on top to extinguish the candles placed along the side of the corridors, he said. Sam Ravy, who spoke Chinese and English as well as Khmer, earned double the $160 basic monthly salary being demanded by the strikers, but he attended the protest in Pur Senchey district to show solidarity with his workers. A supporter lights incense Wednesday in front of Prey Sar prison in Phnom Penh, where 21 garment workers and labor activists were transferred ahead of their trials on Friday. (Siv Channa) "He had called and said 'Hello mother, is my wife on the way to Phnom Penh with our child?' I heard the sound of shooting, and I asked him where he was," his mother-inlaw, Long Saran, recalled Wednesday. She said Sam Ravy had dismissed her concerns in their morning phone call. "He told me he was with the other protesters. Then his phone went quiet…. At 2 p.m. someone called us and told us to pick up the body," she said. Sam Ravy, 25, was one of at least five protesters killed by the military police's AK-47 fire during the successful effort to put down the nationwide strike, which had dovetailed with mass protests by the political opposition. The play’s central character is Vuthy – a Cambodian-American teenager struggling to find his place in a community that doesn’t truly accept him and in a family that seems to be disappearing. A comedic drama about finding a direction and a home, Year Zero is set in Long Beach, California in 2003. The play will open the company’s 2014-2015 season. Rehearsals will begin on August 19 with performances running September 11 – October 5, 2014. Actors will need to be fully-available days and nights for the seven week rehearsal and performance period. All roles are salaried positions and complimentary housing is provided for guest actors. All four of the roles in the play are currently available. The characters in Year Zero use a few Khmer phrases, but otherwise speak American-English. Ability to speak Khmer is not necessary. VUTHY – 16 year-old CambodianAmerican male. A glasses-wearing, selfdescribed intellectual “geek” (he plays “Dungeons and Dragons”) who, like any teenager, yearns for independence and is torn between dreams of being street-tough and following a better path. He beatboxes and freestyle raps. RA– 22 year-old Cambodian-American female; Vuthy’s older sister. Attractive, confident, level-headed college student at Berkeley. Although her current boyfriend Glenn is a sensible choice, she is still attracted to her ex-boyfriend Han’s raw charisma and strength. On Friday, 13 of the strikers who were beaten and arrested during the protest on Veng Sreng will appear alongside 12 others before the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on charges of intentional destruction of property under aggravating circumstances. Their property damage trial, which comes after almost four months of secretive incarceration in a notorious high-security prison on the Vietnamese border in Kompong Cham province, will be the government's first substantial effort to take action over January 3. "We are still waiting for the Ministry of Interior to contact us to provide answers about the killing, said Chhiv Phanith, Sam Ravy's widow, at her mother's home Wednesday. Chhiv Phanith, 20, the widow of Sam Ravy, whom military police shot dead on January 3 during nationwide strikes. (Alex Willemyns/The Cambodia Daily) Ms. Phanith met Sam Ravy while working under him in 2008 and married him two years later. After his death, she returned home to Kompong Speu so her mother could help raise her three-year-old son and daughter, who has yet to celebrate her first birthday. She said the reluctance of authorities to show any interest in the shooting death of Sam Ravy had been evident since the day he was killed. "They left my husband's body alone and made the accusation that he was shot while stealing a motorbike," she said. On the evening of January 3, she arrived at a local pagoda and was presented with her husband's body, still wearing his headband calling for a $160 monthly salary. "They said it was a dead dog's body, and I was very shocked," Ms. Phanith said. Local authorities then demurred for months to even provide her with a death certificate for her husband, openly accusing her of being a supporter of the opposition, she said. Multiple requests for an investigation into her husband's death have resulted in little more than an unexplained payout of $2,500 from district authorities in Phnom Penh. "We do not believe Cambodian authorities or courts will find justice for the people killed, injured or imprisoned," Ms. Phanith said, dismissing the dormant government body created to "study" what happened on Veng Sreng Street on January 3. "But they must bear the responsibility." At the Vattanac Industrial Park in Phnom Penh, Chhiv Sarun, 25, the widow of Yean Rithy, 25, who died in surgery from a bullet wound to the stomach, said her efforts to get answers from the government over her husband's death had also yielded nothing. Ms. Sarun said that authorities simply "do not care" about her husband's death, pointing to the fact that she was prevented from visiting her husband as he lay dying in the hospital, and to the outright denials from the government that military police killed anyone. "We have not heard from any of the authorities since the killing," Ms. Sarun said, recounting vain efforts with local rights groups to secure an inquiry. Ms. Sarun compared the government's competence in arresting, incar- "It seems impossible to imagine those perpetrators in court," Ms. Sarun said of the military police who shot and killed her husband. In Kompong Speu, Ms. Phanith questioned the priorities of the gov- TMB½relx Page.24 ernment. "They need to find out why people were killed and not just investigate property damage. Those people killed had wives and children who were waiting for them," she said. "The property damage can be repaired but the people can't be brought back to life."
