IChanging Seasonsl Harding Comfort Comfort - it comes with a summer. It's that warm season when the heat can be beat by a trip to the pool, refrigerator or air conditioner_ In Harding's changing seasons, comfort and satisfaction characterized the second year class of sophomores_ Following the rocky ebb and flow of freshman life, the sophomore had finally arrived. It was a warm feeling indeed. "You're not a newcomer any more," said class pre~ident Blair Bryan. With his newly growing hair he looks like he might be a freshman football player, ex· cept for the horseshoe·shaped scar on the left side of his head. He had a 20 percent chance to live, and if he did, he would be a v'lgetable. He proved those pre· dictions wrong. His name is Johnny Cravens, and last sum· mer he underwent surgery for the removal of the largest brain tumor ever seen in Memphis. Johnny, 19, a sophomore from Jonesboro, had carried the tumor since childhood; he may have been born with it. The tumor has caused problems most of his life. " When I jogged," he said, "My head would throb. It felt like blood was just going up and down in my head when I quit jogging. I'd have sweat drops that looked like blood because they were so big. I just thought everybody did after they got finished run· ning." He also walked with a limp since he was seven months old. "No one ever suspected (a tumor), because I never do com· _ eddie Cagle 168 · Sophomores plain when I'm hurting. I guess it's because I've been in f09tball all these years, and I'm used to taking pain." Johnny's problems began to get worse during the fall of 1980 after he was injured In a club football game. "I was go· ing against these juniors or seniors and I didn't know when to quit. I'd knocked two of them down in a row and I hit 'em with my head. I knocked them down, but I paid for it." He was playing tackle, the same position he played In high school. He considered playing at Harding, he said, "but I decid· ed I didn't want to have my head shaved." He paused and grin· ned, adding, "didn't have any choice this yearl" After suggestions that he see a doctor, Johnny did, and was told that he had a concussion. No X·rays were taken, even though he told the doctor that he thought he had a brain tumor. His behavior had changed. He was "turning into a different person, a different personality," he said. "I'd had these spells where I'd act goofy and so weird, things like carry boxes on my head. I just thought, "That's not me, and there's something controlling me." An A and B student during the fall of 1980, he was making C's and D's in the spring of 1981. A good artist, his work for an art class progressively worsened. He began to see double. Johnny went to a doctor and was sent to Memphis, where he Amy McLain - Gl end ale, AZ Lawrence McNutt - Forrest City , AR Anne Pike - Sprin gville , IN William Means - Mt. Ketc hikan, AK Ronald Moore · Dalla s, TX was given a CAT scan, which is a device for taking X·rays of the head. Then the tumor was dis· covered. 'The lady that was tak· ing the X·ray had to go twice because she couldn't believe how big it was," he said. " It was the size of a peach and it cover· ed the whole left side of my brain. I only had two weeks to live if I didn't have an operation." That was May 28, 1981. Five days later Johnny underwent surgery at Baptist Memorial Hospital. For 11 hours, three neurosurgeons. two eye specialists, a respiratory doctor and several others worked to remove the tumor. It was benign, but the size of the tumor made the surgery particularly delicate. Even with surgery, Johnny was not expected to be normal. " I had a 20 percent chance to live. If I did live I'd be a vegetable, I wouldn't be able to walk, I'd be blind, I wouldn't hear, I wouldn't talk." No one told Johnny just what his chances were. "They said I hod a tumor behind my left eye, and I asked to see the X·ray, so I knew it wasn't just behind my left eye," he said. " I asked the doctor a few questions. I didn't ask him if I was going to die, I just asked him if it was cancer and he said no. He just said I'm going to have to have surgery and he said, 'I'm sorry, son: I guess he assumed I knew that the odds of me living weren't too much." During surgery his heartbeat accelerated to 200 beats per minute and his blood pressure soared. Afterwards he lay coma· tose for f ive days; he suffered a stroke during the coma. After regaining consciousness, Johnny recovered quick· Iy. Most people recuperating from brain surgery spend three months in the hospital; Johnny spent three weeks. Johnny's hospital cuisine in· cluded Big Macs. 'They were trying to get me to say words when I first woke up, and all I could say was 'boc,' and they thought I meant Big Mac." Johnny added, "What I really meant was a Quarter Pounder." Johnny attributes his remark· able recovery to prayer. "It was the Father in heaven that pulled me through, and prayer. Johnny attributes his remark· able recovery to prayer. "It was the Father In heavan that pulled me through, and prayer. Here in Searcy I heard they announced it on the radio. It's just amazing how many people were praying for me. They were praying for me practically all over the United States." His determination, he feels, also sped his recovery. "I said 'I'm gonn. get well ' and I did. When I woke up I said, 'I'm go· ing home: When I got home I said, 'I'm going to college: I'm here, and I'm going to pass:' He carried a 12·hour course load during the fall semester. Although the tumor is gone, Johnny is not out of danger yet. The tumor left a hole in his skull ; if he catches a cold, the infection could penetraie the hole and cause spinal meningit· is, which could be fatal. The hole will heal in about a year. Johnny took tests to see if he was capable of returning to school. "My IQ test was normal," he said. "It will still go up. which is unusual because when I woke up I think I was retarded. " He also took manual dexterity tests and a drawing test, on which he made a per· fect score. Beside occasional head · aches. an expected conse· quence of brain surgery, Johnny is healthy. He no longer limps. He says he draws three times better than he used to. He used to slur his speech; his voice has become cleared and deeper. One of the problems Johnny faces is the way people react with him. "A lot of people are scared to talk to me when they find out what happened, which is human nature," he said. ''I've accepted it. It makes me lonely sometimes; I wish people would talk to me. They just don't know what to say. I guess they're afraid I lost part of my brain:' Johnny is here, with all of the brain he was born with. He must avoid vigorous physical activity and even frustration, but that does not prevent him from liv· ing and enjoying life. Abilities may come slowly now, but they will come. "Like the doctors say, in good time, " Johnny said. If he says he will do it, he will do It. That's the way things are with Johnny Cravens. ~ - Laura Brown M art in-Moore 169 Beth Moorer· Ft. Richard, 21, has been a stu· dent at Harding University for the past three years and Lydie, 19, is in her second year at Har· ding. Richard and Lydie are follow· ing in the footsteps of their father by attending school at Harding. After being converted to Christianity by a missionary from the U.S. he went to Har· ding in 1955 and studied there for two years. Then he, too, began dOing mission work in the U.s. and in France. He was killed in a car wreck in 1971. Richard said he had planned to attend Harding and to do mission work since he was very young. He is majoring In Biblical languages and In THE CLOSENESS Richard and Lydie share is easily seen by all who come in contact w ith them. English. He is considering go· Ing to work for the advertiSing department of a French oil company. But he said that wherever he goes he plans to teach the gospel. He will graduate from Harding in May. Lydie, a nursing major , hopes to do mission work in South America after she graduates. Richard and Lydie received two years of college credit here because of the superior high school system they have in France. Richard explained that the French high schools place little emphasis on sports and other extra-curricular activities, and if a student fails one sub· ject, he has to take the entire semester over again. He said they emphasize learning for· eign languages and a bac· calaureate diploma from their high schools have a good reputation the world over. Lydie said that in France, the people are closer to other coun· tries and know more about other countries than Americans do. And, Richard added that the knowledge of the typical Frenchman is more generalized than that of the typical American. " A Frenchman wants to know everything about everything," he explained. "In the States It is mo r e specialized." Richard said the social classes in France are much more obvious. "Here any kind of work Is valued," he said. In summing up the American people, Richard said. "They seem like big children. They are able to do a lot more by discov· ering the child within themselves. Americans are able to take more risks." "The more I stay in the United State the more I like it," Richard concluded. Little Rock, AR 174· Freshmen Every year hundreds of high school graduates walk up to the pillars of Cathcart or Armstrong and spring into the brand new world of University life. Like the season of spring, these freshmen make an im· mediate impression and emblazon their enthusiastic personalities from the banks of the lily pool to the pale walls of the washateria. Harding University is new. and to most it is the time of their lives. "Dorm life is a blast," said freshman Randy Richey. "Col· lege is more fun than high school because there are more people to know and more places to be. It's a new life." Most upperclassmen have found out which teachers should or shouldn't be taken for certain courses, but the frosh must learn these lessons the hard way. The jokes are on them in chapel. Pledge week sends her mud and demerits their way, Sometimes life is hard. But through the growing year, men and women surfaced_ Maturity came as the IS-yearolds said goodbye to the folks for distant Arkansas horizons and a different existence. Searcy's own Phil Segraves commented on the broader scope of life found at the University _ "'n college there's more responsibility and yet more freedom ," he stated_ " You've got to make yourself go to classes and study, but also you can make your own deci· sions and ·live your own life. I've really enjoyed meeting new people, being in a club and stay· ing in the dorm," Before the freshman knows it, he will move out of the decaying dorm, sit in the "right" classes and know his way around. But one can only hope he will not leave th is year totally behind, for it is what has made him life's spring. Birds are singing in the air, flowers are blooming, and schoolwork seems to casually ease its way down to the bottom of the average student's priority list. Spring fever? Well maybe, 176· Freshmen but to a lot of Harding students this means "Heber fever" and frequent trips to Heber Springs, a beautiful lake about 30 miles northwest of Searcy. Cutting classes for a trip to the lake is almost a regular routine for · some college funlovers, especially on those warm, sunny days. "It's a good place to go and get away from campus to relax, " stated Teri Hazelip, a senior from Montgomery, Ala. Many females enjoy taking a float and spending the day catching rays from the hot sun. For the Harding male , Heber's high cliffs are the big d rawing card. Diving and swim· ming are the reasons most often admitted to by men for thei r days at the lake. When asked why he enjoyed heading out for Heber, junior Jay Savage answered, "I like practicing my dives and soak· ing up some sun." Yes, on most of the warm days this April the shores of Heber were crammed with skiiers, swimmers, divers and watchers. Many of that number were from Harding and became members of the growing craze ca lied the " fever." When spring comes and the sun burns and tans start show· ing up around campus, a ques· tion frequently asked is "Did you go to Heber today?" Sure they did because it's " Heber fever" . . . catc~ it! t;i - Brad Bradley THE PERFECT altemaUue to going to classes? Diuing off the bluffs at Heber! Jeff Tennyson has been given the ability to motivate, and he is using that ability for the March of Dimes. The organization's efforts range from education on prenatal care to fund raising which is a prime source of motivation for young adults such as Harding's Tennyson, a sophomore from Harrison, Ark. Jeff is one of a six member national youth council made up of college students, with each serving a one year term. Jeff estimated that by the end of his term, he will have talked to over 1,000 young individuals and raised in the vicinity of $100,000 for MOD. Jeff admitted that the spirit of Christianity is the driving force behind his entire work of "Caring and Sharing." In his speech Jeff explains what caring is all about by quoting from Zig Ziegler's book, See You at the Top: "You can get what you want out of life if you first help enough other people get what they want." Since he has seen and been touched by children with birth defects, Jeff will continue to spread the good MOD news and motivate youngsters. As he states in his speech: "What is our cause with the MOD? Is it walk-a·thons, educational sem- inars and conventions? Well partly, but our main cause is to help, to share, to care for those who are less fortunate; the ones who can't wake up every morn· ing and go to school as easily as you and I; the ones who can't get dressed by themselves; the ones who can't do so many things in life that we just take for granted. Man, we do have a cause! And the only way we can fight for this cause is through you and through me ... But we must get after it now. We must make our presence felL" And for hundreds of children born not quite xight, Jeff's presence has been felL ~ - Leon Johnson Fields-Hurst 179 Angela Hutchinson - Dallas, TX Susan Hutchinson - Hornlake, MS Stephanie Isaacs - Batesville, AR Kathy Jacobi - Memphis, TN Lisa Jenkins - Nashville, TN Sharon Jensen - Sleeply Hollow, MN Charles Jerry - Pine Bluff, AR Ernest Johnson - Kansas City, MO Jerry Johnson - Steens, MS Raymond Johnson - Judsonia, AR Roger Johnson - McAllen, TX Timothy L. As you walk by the dorms, strains from one hundred different stereo systems spill out into the quiet air. Country music mingles with Rock 'n Roll, mellow with punk, and one thing is very clear, people at Harding love music - all kinds. Freshman Valerie Dees voiced the feelings of many Harding students, "I like beautiful music. I like classical music and almost anything but hard rock, to me that isn't music - just a way of releasing tension for some people. " A lot of people look for something deeper in the music they listen to. Grad student Paul Thomas wants his music to "evoke something more than a foot tap. Music should have something to say, " To Paul such artists as Bruce Spring. son 's favorite song is someone else's nightmare, but whether you keep your radio dial on KKYK or KSSN-country, music and Harding students are in· separable. ~ -Jane Gore steen , James Taylor and Jackson Browne fill this need. "And now ladies and gentlemen, the 38th President of the United States, Mr. Hoober Heevert." What? Yes. you heard him right. An American disc jockey had just embarrassed himself in front of our entire country by doing what every human being does rather frequently, "tangling his tongue." Although this unfortunate radio man is pro· bably the citizen most often remembered for his enormous verbal blooper, the rest of the people of this crazy world have said some pret· ty strange things themselves ... and Harding University is no exception. Helen James, a not·too-prominent Media Center secretary, geared my ears to the sub· ject by complimenting a particular customer and ex·friend with the words, "Oh hello. You look so good today that I didn't even recognize you." Henceforth on the lookout, a bevy of blunders began to surface. One college admin· istrative official was overheard saying, 'The dean of women and I are getting sick and tired of all this kissing on campus going on right under our noses." Oh sure, the average day carries plenty of slaughtered sentences, but why is it that ch urch services seem to breed the most fre· quent fumbling foul ups? Sunday after Sunday one particular Chris· tian unknowingly gives those present a list of members who are sick of the congregation. To have that followed by an Obviously nero vous young man who wants to read from his revised virgin is almost too much to take in one sitting. Occasionally, the jitters also hit prayer leaders who think they have every angle covered in advance. Strenuous preparation proved the downfall of a young adult one time Lynn W. "Lol d. bless the widows and orphans that they may become sick and afflicted." Even though there are countless others, Bi· ble professor Jimmy Allen offered a final ex· ample of student wit in the midst of ignorance. "One day in class," Allen told, "I asked the kids if God just unmercifully pushed and push. ed people to become Christians, what kind of God would He be? 'A pusher' was the somewhat logical response of one attentive male." So. in that moment of smugness. when you least expect it to happen to you - expect it. And remember. the sentence that's butchered could be your own. - Jimmy Allen t:6 Melinda Susan Lafevers - Searcy, AR Dale Lane - Tupelo, AR Tela Melinda Lee - Memphis, TN ~ J~ .0 ~.
