At just 41ft in length, Seehund submarines were only slightly longer than the payload
they carried. Nevertheless, these tiny, two-man terrors were much more effective against
Allied shipping than their diminutive size might suggest. Their success was predicated on
the fact that they were virtually impossible to detect when submerged. The type’s only
failing was that it was unseaworthy; storms caused most of the 35 Seehund losses during

Based at NAS Miramar, California, the Fighting Falcons were deployed as fleet defense
for the USS America and USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. The F-4 Phantom
II was their mount of choice. These famous aircraft were able to deploy up to 18,000
pounds of ordnance against air or ground targets in a 420 mile (680 km) combat radius.
Although the capability was never used operationally, the F-4J could also deliver nuclear

The “Butcher-Bird’s” best pilots
German fighters of all types were a major threat during WWII but the Fw 190 was in a class all
its own. With a pilot like Herman Gram or Anton Hackl behind the controls, the odds of coming
out unscathed were incredibly low. Both Gram and Hackl amassed roughly 200 confirmed
kills, many of them in Fw 190s and many of Hackl’s against four-engine bombers. Though not

With a top speed nearly 100 mph higher than the P-51 Mustang, the de Havilland Vampire was
