It’s truly a privilege to host a Theatre Company and Director of such repute to launch our opening season. Little John’s lyrical and spell-binding playwriting and performing is in a class of its own and the show is made all the more special by the fact that it also stars Bryan Burroughs, a superb Carlow-born performer of national and international standing. The show promises to be a wonderful new theatre production and a landmark moment for The George Bernard Shaw Theatre and for Carlow – so be sure not to miss it. The programme maintains these high standards right through until the end of the year across all of the performing arts – music, drama, comedy, dance, opera – and of course pantomime! With something in the programme for everyone, I hope that you’ll enjoy what’s on offer in your new performing arts space and make it part of your everyday life - we look forward to hearing your feedback. Róisín McGarr www.gbshawtheatre.ie BOOK ONLINE www.gbshawtheatre.ie OCT 01 – OCT 03 THEATRE Barabbas Theatre Company in association with The George Bernard Shaw Theatre presents Johnny Patterson, The Singing Irish Clown By Little John Nee VISuAl CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART & THE GEORGE BERNARD SHAW THEATRE WORLD PREMIERE “When I walk on I must be just right, happiness depends on it, lives are destroyed by the accumulation of small disappointments gathering momentum. They want Johnny Patterson to transport them away from their troubles… I must be just right.” The George Bernard Shaw Theatre is privileged to present the world premiere of “Johnny Patterson, The Singing Irish Clown” from the internationally acclaimed Barabbas Theatre Company as our inaugural production. This powerful new show is an homage to the forgotten genius and extraordinary life of circus performer Johnny Patterson from Co. Clare, known as “The Singing Irish Clown.” Starting life as a humble drummer-boy, Johnny Patterson’s unique talents saw him head-hunted from a regional touring circus by the world famous Cooper and Bailey Circus. He “said goodbye to his beloved wife and family and headed for Amerikay.” At first he joined the ranks of “the detested Irish” immigrants abroad but went on to become one of the highest paid entertainers of his time and amassed huge wealth through royalties from his hit songs. Moved by the politics of his homeland, the idealistic Johnny penned a song urging Loyalists and Nationalists to put their differences aside. He paid for his political commentary with his life, as an angry and bitter reaction from the crowd turned to violence and retaliation. “I am a singing clown for what its worth, a life invested, and now in the graveyard, the fire of my tribe has set me aflame. Always a fool, always a fool, but a fool with worthy aspirations.” BOOK ONLINE www.gbshawtheatre.ie OCT 4th VISuAl CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART & THE GEORGE BERNARD SHAW THEATRE OPERA Children’s Theatre Opera Theatre Company An Seanfhear Beag le Marc Mac Lochlainn DATE Sunday, October 4th TIME 6.30pm PRICE €3 (includes tea or coffee) DATE Thursday, October 8th TIME 10pm & 1.30pm PRICE €2 Opera Club What audiences have said: “I loved the singing and the delightfully witty script!” “It was nice to be up close and personal, within the performance, intimate entertainment” Feile An Fomhair – National Singing Day In advance of their full performance of Handel’s Alcina on the 22nd of October, Opera Theatre Company provide a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with their amazing artists in an “Opera Club” setting. One of the main highlights of the tour was his performance with The Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, at the South Street Seaport Festival in Brooklyn, New York, where he got a truly rousing reception from 10,000 people! Jack is definitely genre defying and to simply try to define him as crooner or storytelling troubadour is futile. His voice and stage presence are his main selling points. Jack’s voice is three-dimensional in that he can go from a seducing whisper to an operatic top note effortlessly. He has long ago confirmed his status as Ireland’s foremost live performer. His recent Burn On Tour sold out right around Ireland and The George Bernard Shaw Theatre will be no exception!
