The Barn Tearoom & Shops
Over the past few months the Barn Tearoom has
undergone some exciting new changes. After its
recent update with new tables, chairs, serving
area, flooring and menu, we wanted to add a little
something extra for supporters who were coming
up for a cup of tea or coffee.
Welcome to this our summer newsletter in our 25th
Anniversary year. This year more than ever is such an
important year to us at St Vincent’s Hospice, as we aim
to raise £1 million.
Many of you will be aware that I have worked as a nurse
in palliative care for 25 years. During these years I have
cared for thousands of strangers in the last years,
months and days of their lives, giving compassion and
skill every day in complex and subtle ways, alongside
supporting their families and those closest to them - but
one of the hardest things I have ever faced is caring for
my own father, who has dementia.
There is now a wonderful selection of Vintage
clothing and collectables and furniture available to
buy.
Earlier this year as part of our campaign to raise one million pounds, I was
interviewed by the Evening Times. In the interview I shared my personal
battle to help dementia sufferers and the families who care for them.
As Chief Executive of St Vincent’s Hospice I am in a unique position to have
personal insight into how dementia care could be better provided in the
future. I believe that we at St Vincent’s could have a vital role to play in that
care.
With an aging and growing population there will be a greater number of us
living with cancer and other life limiting illnesses such as dementia. In short
there will be a greater need and demand for care at the end of life.
That St Vincent’s will need to take these inevitable changes into account as
we plan future service developments is beyond doubt. The scale and
challenge ahead will require us to significantly increase the extent and scope
of end of life services.
We thank you all in supporting us in the
work that we do, from our small
beginning in 1988, through the last 25
years and onwards to the changes that
lie ahead.

‘Vintage at the Barn’ has been very
successful over the past few months, with our
supporters coming up to have a browse through
our selection and taking the chance to grab a
little piece of history.
There is also a wide range of furniture available
to buy straight from the hospice. The items
available are displayed in the Barn Tearoom
and if you are interested in anything, just see
Flo to have a further look.
Our new wedding range in Bridge of
Weir Shop has everything from
wedding dresses and bridesmaid
dresses to mother of the bride outfits
and accessories.
With the summer fast approaching the
Barn Tearoom is the perfect place to
stop by to have some afternoon tea
and take a look at our fantastic clothes
and furniture.

2013 is a very special year for St Vincent’s as we
celebrate 25 years of providing palliative care
across Renfrewshire.
We have come a long way since 1988 since we
cared for our first patients in North Road,
Johnstone. However, with an aging population there
is now more demand for our services than ever
before. As a charity we rely on the generosity of the local community to
keep growing.
On 9th January Shereen Nanjiani launched our 25th Anniversary Appeal
at the Tall Ship in Glasgow. In this our 25th year we aim to raise £1
million to maintain and develop our crucial services; meeting the care
need of our local communities at often a critical time. For us this means
expanding our services in the community with a vision to provide care in
the evenings and weekends.
During this campaign we have been
inspired by the support of the local
community, from book sales to
dancing at Strictly, many people are
helping us in many ways. The
response of our supporters this far
has greatly helped us on our way, but
we still have much to do to reach our
ambitious target. With everyone’s
support we can achieve our goals but
we need everyone to get involved.

Community Support
Volunteering
We are very grateful for all the fantastic support we receive from
individuals, community groups and organisations alike. Our
services are available to all, free of charge, thanks to the
generosity of our local community.
St Vincent’s Hospice is more than just a building; it is
much more than just a palliative care unit. A hospice
really is its own special community. Our community of
volunteers is looked after by Christine Haddock our
Volunteer Co-ordinator.
BOWFIELD 5K
“My role as the volunteer co-ordinator is to advertise,
recruit and support our many volunteers. It is an
on-going responsibility as we are constantly looking for
extra help in so many areas and we are also looking at
developing new roles within the Hospice for
volunteers.”
Our supporters at Bowfield Hotel and
Country Club organised their first ever
5K road race in aid of the hospice on
Sunday 14th April, calling it ‘A local
race for our local hospice.”
Unfortunately the weather was not in
our favour on the day as the wind and
rain looked set to put a damper on the
day.
However, 60 amazing runners turned up to take part and helped to raise
a fantastic £3,269.97 for our work. Well done to everyone involved.
Provost Abseil
We are delighted that the Provost of Renfrewshire,
Anne Hall, has very kindly chosen St Vincent’s
Hospice as one of her four charities for this year.
As part of the fundraising activities a sponsored
abseil was organised down Renfrewshire House in
Paisley, the council’s headquarters, on Saturday 25th
May.
The hospice was represented by Elaine Rae our
Patient and Family Support Team Leader, who
bravely scaled the building all in the name of fundraising.
Drew Gibson who helps out in the fundraising team
says, “Since I retired I enjoy volunteering in the hospice
a couple of days a week, getting involved in fundraising
but also being able to help other departments out when
I can. I get a real sense of fulfilment knowing I am
doing something to help others in their time of need.”
Life Technologies
Two teams of staff from Life Technologies
in Inchinnan very kindly gave up their time
to pop up to the hospice for a couple of
days to help in our garden.
They helped give our benches a paint uplift
and planted some lovely new plants just in
time for summer.
We already have a fantastic team of around 230
volunteers who assist in many areas within the
hospice and in our charity shops. In the hospice we
currently have volunteers helping out in a variety of
areas such as Administration, Fundraising, Barn
Tearoom, Reception, Kitchen, Day Hospice,
Complementary Therapy, Patient Care, Housekeeping
and Driving. We also have a great team of volunteers
in our 10 charity shops. Volunteers help out for many
reasons - to gain useful experience and help them
enhance their CV, the opportunity to try something
new, make friends, give something back to the community and of course
because they really enjoy it!
The amount of time given by volunteers is much
appreciated.

Back to the 80’s Zumba Party
Local instructors led by Cheryl Stevenson of Zumbawithcheryl held a
‘Back to the 80’s Zumba Party’ in aid of the hospice on Sunday 28th
April 2013 at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley.
It was a real 80’s flash
back with everyone
getting glammed up
and in to the spirit of
the 3 hour 80’s
themed Zumba class.
Ladies Night
One of our nurses Liz Ruthven with support from the team organised a
Ladies Night at the Spateston Bowling Club on Friday 31st May to help
raise funds for the hospice.
It was a night just for the girls and one not to be missed. There was
plenty of entertainment and chances to win prizes in the raffle and Irish
bingo.
A huge thanks for all the support from everyone who attended, Liz for
organising the event and to everyone who donated items for the night.
All your support helped to raised a wonderful £718.29 on the night!

Everyone at the hospice was delighted when
the Renfrewshire Referees Association told
us that they would be holding this years
Sportsmans Dinner in aid of St
Vincent’s and Accord Hospices.
The dinner took place on Thursday 28th
March at the Glynhill Hotel in Renfrew.
Entertainment was provided by Kilmarnock
Assistant Manager Jimmy Nicholl and
impressionist Paul Reid, who ensured the guests had a great night.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended, the hospice
received a cheque for £1,200 to help with our continuing work. A huge
thank you for all your support.

Keeping it clean
Patient and family support at St Vincent’s
Hospice has a number of staff who regularly
work with adults, children and young people
who are facing challenging times through their
experiences of living with or caring for someone
who is experiencing a life limiting illness.
Housekeeping is more than just the cleaning of
rooms, it is making an environment safer and
easier to live and work in.
Elaine Rae Team Leader says “Our team is an
essential part of the holistic care that is
delivered inside St Vincent’s Hospice and in our
community. We offer practical, emotional and spiritual support to ease
some of the stresses and strains of daily life.”
My team are always on hand to provide care and support. There are
many ways in which the team will work with people who choose help.
Usually this begins with an informal chat, or a confidential one to one
meeting.
The Patient and Family support team works
closely with a range of different people. The
team helps patients and families and
children who use the hospice services.
They also work closely with children and
young people from the community who
have agreed to support from our Butterfly
project.
Children, young people and their families can struggle to manage
through difficult times. Death of a parent or loved one is a very
stressful event and the Butterfly Project is there to provide support,
information, education and advice in the community. It is available for
children and young people from 2-18 years. One young woman who
has recently had help from the service said:
“I feel this sense of relief when she comes to visit me at school
now, I don’t have to talk to my mum about my worries and feelings
(because it upsets her). I really look forward to the visits, she
always listens to me and helps me to understand what I’m feeling
about losing my Dad is normal” Alexis, 15 years old, who lost her Dad
suddenly from lung cancer.
It is the personal interaction with those in the team and knowing that
there is someone there that can help.

“My name is Nancy Orr and I’m facilities
Manager here at St Vincent’s Hospice. I have
been employed at the hospice for 6 years now,
after working in healthcare for 18 years.
I oversee a team of dedicated housekeepers and
volunteers and our main priority is all about the
standard of cleanliness that you would expect to
find in a healthcare environment. On entering the hospice we hope
you can see the standard of hygiene and the enthusiasm of our
team.
The housekeepers day starts at 7:30am, 7 days a week and ends
around 4pm. We start in the administration area and then follow
through to the day hospice and reception. At 9am the team go into
the In-Patient Unit where there are 8 single rooms, 4 of them with
bedsits, where relatives of the patient can stay.
Our dedicated team of volunteers are very valuable as they are
hands on and very much part of our team and help us maintain the
high standards we set.
We have guidelines in place that are governed by NHS Greater
Glasgow and Clyde and this is our established procedure which
has to be met. There are two members of our housekeeping team
who have completed the ’Cleanliness Championship’. This is
additional training which promotes the
prevention of infection control.
This is a very challenging and
rewarding role, with no two days ever
the same. My team are always on
hand to ensure that all service users
and patients have a clean and happy
experience here at the hospice.

John’s Story
Our Executive Club 25 is an elite group of businesses who have
formed a unique partnership with St Vincent’s Hospice.
John, 75, had a history of heart failure and
his condition had been slowly deteriorating
for several months. He had developed
challenging symptoms including fatigue,
pain, nausea and breathlessness, so he
was referred to St Vincent’s Hospice for
further assessment and support, allowing
him to be cared for at home.

Over the next few weeks, St Vincent’s
Hospice worked with John’s Heart Failure
Nurse, District Nurse and GP, adjusting his
medication and helping John and his family
to talk about his illness, helping them to
make plans for how best to support him. St
Vincent’s Hospice played a key role in
facilitating these challenging discussions, providing emotional and
psychological support for the family.
John’s family said “We did not realise St Vincent’s Hospice was for
patients with other diseases; we thought it was only for cancer. St
Vincent’s Hospice were great, helping us get so many practical
things sorted out. The changes in Dad’s medication made such a
difference.”

25th Anniversary Gala Ball
Friday 10th May 2013
Strictly Come Prancing
Friday 19th & Saturday 20th April
Another ‘Strictly Come Prancing’ event has
come and gone and in it’s wake are dancers
with tapping feet eager to do it all again and
an audience full of strictly dance fever.
Our dancers were all exceptional giving last years participants a
good run for their money. From Sexy Sambas and Whimsical
Waltzes to Cheeky Cha Chas and Flawless Foxtrots, this was a
night of spectacular entertainment.
On Friday we had John Mitchell and Angela Elliott with their
winning Cha Cha and Saturday saw John Cunningham and Morag
Lewis take the title with their Foxtrot.
A huge thank you to everyone involved to help make this event
possible and helping to raise a fantastic £30,000!

There was glitz and glamour at
the Grand Central Hotel on Friday
10th May, when over 200 guests
turned up in all their finery to help
celebrate our 25th Anniversary at
our Gala Ball.
The evening was hosted by our
ambassador Shereen Nanjiani, who guided our guests through the
evenings activities. We were also delighted to welcome Natasha
Raskin from McTears Auctioneers to host our grand auction, which
was a highlight of the night.
Entertainment was provided by Brass Impact who got everyone up
on to the dance floor, and gave our guests the perfect soundtrack
to dance the night away.
Thanks to all our guests who were so generous on the night and to
all our supporters who very kindly donated items for our auction,
silent auction and raffle. The fabulous amount of £27,000 was
raised for the continuing work of the hospice.
