a note from the director
Dear Members,
The beginning of a new year is an exciting time, full of promise and plans. We
have a lot to look forward to in 2013 @ the Bramble Park Zoo.
We are fortunate to have the Upper Sioux River Watershed Project office at
the Bramble Park Zoo. Another exciting project that was completed this year
is the constructed wetland at the Zoo. With a design by the SDSU agriculture
engineering students, the project will re-circulate surface water from the duck
ponds and filter it through a 500-foot-long constructed wetland. This biofilter will allow suspended solids to fall out and the plants will use the excess
nutrients in the water. With signage to highlight the process, this is a great
demonstration site to showcase the importance of wetlands and encourage
the use of natural systems.
The Studio 3 Landscape Architecture Class from SDSU, was proud to present
the new Wild Faces Wild Places exhibit designed for the Bramble Park Zoo. The
new exhibit will include 14 animals native to the northern plains, with several
other animals suggested for future expansion. There will be cultural and
regional themes throughout the exhibit, including a Prairie and Homestead
Plaza, Badlands Adventure, Black Hills Plaza, Native American Plaza and Canine
Plaza. The design was created over the course of a semester by ten third year
Landscape Architecture students. With teamwork, and collaboration with the
zoo, the master plan for Wild Faces Wild Places was produced. The hope is to
make this plan a reality at the zoo in the next five years.
Other exciting projects taking place this year are the construction of the AWC
Family Foundation KidZoo and the Watertown Community Foundation Otter
Town, with opening planned for 2014. Both of these exhibits will transform
open areas at our facility, and I’m looking forward to seeing them take
shape. This year we will also continue with further enhancements to the zoo,
including replacing all waterlines and expanding the visitor services area.
An ongoing goal for Bramble Park Zoo is to maintain sustainable, healthy and
thriving animal and plant collections, and our staff has plans in the works to
further these efforts with innovative programs in 2013. We are well known
for our animals, but few people are aware that the Zoo has an extensive
prairie plant collection, and we will continue this year to raise the profile
of our extraordinary plant species and horticultural expertise. Bird of prey
rehabilitation is also an important conservation project for the Bramble Park
Zoo, and you may have seen coverage of success stories in the Public Opinion
recently.
2013 promises to be a fantastic year for the Bramble Park Zoo. I hope your
new year is off to a great start, and look forward to sharing more about our
progress with you during the months ahead.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 23rd! This is the
FREE admission day at Bramble Park Zoo celebrating Roots
& Shoots through the generosity of the Watertown Community
Foundation’s Youth Council. You will visit stations that explore
what Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots is all about and have the
opportunity to meet R&S members ranging in age from 1st
grade through college. Stop by and see how much the new
tigers, wolves and snow leopard have grown…it will be a fun
day! The event lasts from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Take a walk
on the wild side!

So far this year, snow has been the story @ the zoo!
Housekeeping - Zookeepers and
maintenance staff have been
working hard to care for the animals
despite all of the snow and cold
temperatures. Walkways have to
be cleaned daily, doors and locks
thawed, and ice chipped away.
This adds to their daily routine and
workload. Even when there are snow
days and late starts for the rest of
the community, the animal care staff
must get in to work to care for the
animals!
Hoofstock – The camels, bison,
reindeer, and long-horn steer
have been enjoying the colder
temperatures and the snow. You can
often see them running, galloping,
trotting, sprinting, and dashing
around. Many visitors are surprised
to see these animals out in the
middle of winter, but the climate
here in South Dakota is actually very
similar to their natural range.
Primates – Due to the snow, wind
and cold air, the primates must
remain inside until spring arrives.
We have had some changes in the
primate areas over the winter. A
black and white colobus monkey
was born; we named it Jo after an
employee here at the zoo. Also, the
smaller golden lion tamarins and
Goeldi’s monkeys will be leaving
when the weather permits. They will
move to other zoos to make room
for two new species…coming soon!
Birds – Since many of our birds are
from tropical areas, or would migrate
in the spring and fall, they have to
be placed in “winter housing”. Zoo
staff spends a lot of time cleaning,
disinfecting and feeding in these
areas. Many of the birds, such as the
cockatoo, macaws, and conures need
constant attention and stimulation,
so they are given enrichment items
to keep them active and attentive
every day.
Discovery Center and Terry Redlin
Environmental Center – Yes, these
areas are also open in the winter
months! If you are looking to get out
of the house (and let the kids get
some fresh air and exercise) stop by
the zoo for a few minutes or more
and visit the mammals, fish, insects,
amphibians and reptiles indoors.
We do charge regular admission for
this portion of the zoo, but if you
have a membership it can be very
affordable to make multiple short
trips until the days become longer
and the temperatures rise.

events, act as an interpreter, help with Zoo education programs and go

limited to 25 participants with preference given to current Zoo Crew
members. Enrollment is first come first serve and you will be required

Dr. Jane Goodall says, “Only if we understand will we care, only if we

This group of young leaders will initiate projects, work on youth-driven
campaigns, and provide support for younger Roots & Shoots groups.
It is service learning at its greatest! You will communicate with other
global youth council members from Tanzania, Africa to Watertown, SD.
If you like animals, people, and the environment, this council will give
you the knowledge and compassion to take ACTION!

Wild Birthday Parties
Celebrate your birthday at the Bramble Park Zoo.
Please call the zoo at 882-6269 (at least 2 weeks in advance) to arrange your party.
#1 Birthday in a Bag
Party includes admission to the Zoo for 12 youth and 2
adults, a special backpack for the birthday child containing: a
t-shirt or stuffed animal of your choice; food for the donkeys,
goats and waterfowl; scavenger hunt; and a $5 off coupon
for a cake at the Hy-Vee bakery. You will be responsible for
ordering and picking up the cake, food, decorations, clean
up and chaperoning the participants during the entire party.
Two parents or guardians must attend (there must be one
chaperone for every 6 children).

(maximum of 12 children, 12 years and under, and 2 adults)
Additional guests: $7 each
This party is unstaffed. Picnic tables are available on grounds
on a first come, first serve basis.

The Lake Area Zoological Society’s
Endowment Fund
Supports Progress
@ the Zoo
The Lake Area Zoological Society established the
Endowment Fund so that the growth and quality of
Bramble Park Zoo programs will continue to expand
well into the future. Funds are used to insure the
Zoo’s continued success by upgrading and expanding
exhibits and facilities to educate the zoo visitors about
wildlife both here in Northeastern South Dakota and
around the world.
Why Should I Give to The Endowment Fund?
Funds are necessary to insure that the quality and
upkeep of the Zoo continues to move forward. The
Zoo’s endowment fund relies solely on the generosity
of people in the community, such as you, who have a
genuine love, not only for the animals but also, for the
environment in which they live.
How Are Funds Used?
Gifts to the Endowment Fund will be protected for
generations to come. The principle of any gift to the
Endowment will not be spent, as long as the Zoo is in
existence. The earnings from the Endowment Fund will
be used for Zoo activities, and through this process they
will protect the Zoo for many years.
The Endowment Funds are deposited and invested
through the combined efforts of local investment
institutions.

Animal Chatter, the quarterly Lake Area Zoological
Society Newsletter, is GREEN! If you would like to help
us save money on printing and postage costs and help
the environment, please drop us an email at bpz@
brambleparkzoo.com with the words “It’s Easy Being
Green” in the subject line and we will start sending
your newsletter electronically. You’ll get the same
information and pictures, without wasting paper and
money. You’ll even get the news sooner if you choose to
receive Animal Chatter via email! Note: some editions will
still be mailed via the US Postal Service due to important
inserts located in the newsletter.
