"I have always been intrigued by this building on the grounds of Closson Chase winery.
When I found out the inspiration for it's unique roof is that of a historical Hospice in
France, and the connection that Hospice has to the famous annual wine auction of
Burgundy, which coincidentally falls on the day after our gala this year, I felt it was the
perfect subject matter for my donation this year to support our Hospice in Prince Edward
County".
The unusual tiling of the Closson Chase winery roof was inspired by the famous glazed
tiled roof of the Hospice de Beaune in Burgundy. Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin,
chancellor of Burgundy, it served as a hospital for the poor and needy. Until the 20th
century, the sick were cared for by the Sisters of the Hospices de Beaune in this
magnificent building. It is one of the finest examples of French fifteenth-century
architecture. Since 1859, the Hospices' prestigious vintages have been sold by candlelight
on the third Sunday of November every year in on of the most famous charity wine sales
in the world. For several centuries now, the proceeds of this exceptional charity auction
have been dedicated to the charitable and religious works of the old hospices as well as
new civil and secular hospitals.
This painting comes with a depth of history that inspires all of our efforts to support our
Hospice - from an accomplished Canadian Artist - Susan Wallis.

This is a unique and innovative product that is made in the County. It is a Lounge Chair
that is made by Clearwater Design. Known for their innovated plastics moulding designs
in the canoe and kayak industry, they applied their expertise to designing an elegant and
yet rugged outdoor lounge chair using the same technology. If you haven’t sat in it yet,
please do so. They are extremely comfortable. It adjusts to a reclining position with no
small breakable parts. It can be used as a rocker when taken off its base. You can even
toss it off the dock and lounge in the lake, or the pool as this is a floating lounge chair - a
sure hit for those teenagers with so much lassitude to burn off. These are chairs that will
stand up to the elements, and will remain in the family for years to come.
