The items and weapons found in-game are either accessed directly from the game screen, consumed on use, or, in the case of files, automatically placed in the archive. Here is a list of all types of available pickups and how they are used: The “Surviving the Game” chapter includes the locations of every item in the game. Before starting a level, refer to the appropriate map and make a note of the first-aid spray location. Files: Files are scattered throughout each level. They are hidden within breakable objects, so finding them is sometimes difficult. Once found, they are automatically placed in the archive. The archive can be accessed from the scenario select screen. Herbs: Picking up herbs automatically heals a significant portion of damage. You cannot store herbs, so only pick them up when you have sustained damage. Picking up an herb while at full health wastes the herb. Instead, leave it until you need it (especially during boss battles). Not only do files contain important event, character, and story information, but the percentage of files you find is one factor in determining your completion ranking. See the “Ranking” section at the end of this chapter for more detail. The Environment The first thing you’ll notice while playing the game is just how much of the environment can be destroyed: tables, chairs, lamps, cars, paintings, etc. This is not simply an aesthetic choice or a “cool” gameplay feature—it is absolutely required for four reasons: Firing at red barrels results in an explosion that damages nearby enemies. 1. Destroying objects can reveal hidden items. 2. The number of items you destroy is used in calculating your chapter and overall scenario ranking. primagames.com Weapons/Ammo: Once picked up, all weapons are automatically placed in a queue and can be accessed by pressing g up or down, or by pressing 5. Weapons come with a specified amount of ammo. If you pick up a weapon that you already have in your queue, only the ammo is added. First-aid Spray: The most useful item in the game! First-aid spray is stored until your life gauge drops to zero, at which time it fully heals all damage. Make finding these a top priority. 3. Destroying certain objects indirectly aids in the defeat of enemies. 4. Destroying certain doors reveals alternate paths or secret rooms! Protected by copyright. Unauthorized or unlawful copying or downloading expressly prohibited. 11 Basic Training There is one checkpoint per level, and it’s generally located near the midpoint. primagames.com Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles utilizes an auto-save feature, so there is no need to manually save a game. The game is saved automatically at various points: upon completion of a level, when changes are made to the various options, when a weapon is upgraded, etc. Should you wish to restart a level or reset the game and return to the title screen, press 2 and make the appropriate selection. Tapping 4 here allows Jill and Chris to escape the laser trap unharmed. Dying Resetting a game in the middle of a level causes all current game data to be lost. Ranking After you complete a chapter, you’re assigned a ranking that reflects your efficiency at completing the level. The possible rankings, in descending order, are: “S,”“A,”“B,” and “C.” Two things are guaranteed in a Resident Evil game, regardless of the platform or perspective: death and… death. When you die, you’re given the opportunity to continue. If you’ve passed a checkpoint, you begin there. If you haven’t you restart at the beginning of the level. Not only does reaching a checkpoint allow you to continue from that point, but also it provides you with important information. The time elapsed, enemy hits, critical hits, and objects destroyed are listed. All of these factor in to your end-of-chapter ranking. Achieving a certain ranking is required to unlock some of the hidden content in the game. Also, the higher the ranking, the more stars you gain (stars are used to purchase upgrades for the weapons you find). You are ranked individually in five different areas. The average of those five rankings is your overall chapter ranking. The five areas are: clear time, enemy hits, critical hits, objects destroyed, and files found. Check out the “Authorized Personnel Only” chapter to see exactly what you need to achieve each ranking. Protected by copyright. Since you’ll be walking, running, fighting, and dying in their shoes, you’d best get to know them first! “The File Room” chapter contains profiles on every main and ancillary character mentioned throughout the game. Check them out for a deeper understanding of the motivations and desires that drive each player in the conflict. Train Derailment The first scenario chronicles the original outbreak of the T-virus in the Arklay Mountains (as portrayed in Resident Evil 0). Rebecca Chambers, a S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team member, forms an unlikely alliance with a convicted felon who was en route to his own execution before his convoy ran into some unexpected trouble. Like many of the characters that make up this drama, Billy Coen is not who he appears. Rebecca Chambers 14 A member of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team, Rebecca is an expert in the manufacture and preparation of pharmaceuticals and serves as the team’s medic. She is highly talented and graduated college at the young age of 18. Although she looks delicate, she is a woman of action and calm in the face of danger. She lacks experience in actual combat, so she can appear childish at times and can sometimes hesitate when finding herself overwhelmed by an unknown situation. The Infected Black Tiger What follows is a breakdown of each enemy you encounter in the game. After you read this chapter, you’ll be able to identify and efficiently terminate every creature, mutant, and biological experiment gone awry that Umbrella throws at you. Non-Boss Encounters Adder Background: A disposed-of Web Spinner mutated and grew even larger and more deadly. Attacks: In addition to a melee attack, the Black Tiger spits venom at its prey. Tactics: Black Tigers are slow-moving and weak. However, they make up for their weakness with the ability to cling to and climb walls. They have a tendency to drop in unexpectedly, so be ready in areas they inhabit. Background: This small, venomous snake was secondarily infected by the T-virus. Attacks: Its only attack is a leaping fang-strike. 22 Target the head with whatever weapon is handy. The venom they spit can be dispersed in midair with a carefully placed round. Tactics: Adders move quickly, and their small size makes them difficult targets to hit. However, one shot from the weakest weapon will do the job. Cerberus Bat Background: The Cerberus is a B.O.W. created by administering the T-virus to large, military-trained Dobermans. Background: The Bat has been secondarily infected with the T-virus, giving it heightened aggressiveness. Attacks: Its only attack is a bite. However, they usually attack in numbers. Tactics: Save ammo by using your knife to dispose of the winged rodents. Attacks: Cerberus’s bite is far worse than its bark. Once it gets close to its prey, it’ll leap through the air, making a clean shot difficult to pull off. Tactics: The trick is to be quicker than the mutated dog. In packs, that generally means equipping a shotgun—the blast will knock multiple targets back. PRIMA OFFICIAL GAME GUIDE Protected by copyright. Unauthorized or unlawful copying or downloading expressly prohibited. Zombie Background Zombies were once human, but they were Background: infected with and consequently resurrected by the T-virus. They lose their ability to reason, which, combined with the continued decay of their flesh, has led to their being called Zombies. Attacks: Zombies bite and claw their prey. Tactics: Zombies rely on superior numbers to overwhelm their victims. They are slow-moving but quick when attacking. Your sidearm will suffice against a few, but if they attack in force, equip a shotgun or submachine gun. Also, hitting a Zombie in the leg causes it to fall to its knees, delaying its approach. Bosses Infected Bat Refer to the “Surviving the Game” chapter for detailed tactics on successfully and efficiently defeating every boss. Grave Digger 26 Background: The Infected Bat is a creature that shows distinct mutations over other Bats. It is a prime example of the T-virus increasing the size of a highly compatible mammal. Ivan Background: The Grave Digger is an arthropod that has mutated to an enormous size as a side effect from the T-virus. Background:: Ivan is a derivation of the T-103 Tyrant line that Sergei has re-engineered to act as his personal bodyguard. PRIMA OFFICIAL GAME GUIDE Protected by copyright. Unauthorized or unlawful copying or downloading expressly prohibited. Shotguns Shotguns are remarkable close-range weapons. Not only are they capable of damaging multiple enemies with each shot, but enemies that are hit are usually forced backward by the concussive force of the blast. Further, a point-blank and accurate hit will drop most enemies with a single shell. Shotguns have two big weaknesses, though. The first is their limited range. The buckshot expelled from the muzzle spreads quickly and therefore does considerably less damage the farther it travels. The second weakness is the relatively slow reload time when compared to other weapons. Get caught reloading in the middle of a battle and you’re sure to take damage. Assault Shotgun Shotgun SA First Acquired: Nightmare 1 Despite slow reload times and limited ammo capacity, this gun packs a punch. Assault Shotgun Upgrade 30 First Acquired: Umbrella’s End It’s weaker than other shotguns, but the shotgun SA comes with increased ammo capacity. Caught off guard, her first encounter with an infected passenger may be her last. Enter Billy Coen, Rebecca’s knight in a shining handcuff. She recognizes him from his file, but more pressing matters delay the pleasantries and the accusations of mass murder. This walkthrough assumes you’ve read the training portion of our guide and thus are familiar with both the basic controls and the heads-up display. Train Derailment 1 Where: The Arklay Mountains, just outside Raccoon City Enemies Encountered: Zombie, Leech, Cerberus, Stinger When: July 23, 1998 Weapons Found: Shotgun, grenade, submachine gun Who: Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen Items Found: Herb, first-aid spray, Memo on the Founding of Umbrella, Court Order for Transportation, Billy Coen Profile, Stinger Notes, Leech Notes, Ecliptic Express Notes, Raccoon Forest Notes, Rebecca Chambers Profile What: Leeches infected with the T-virus infiltrate the Ecliptic Express, infecting almost everyone onboard. Rebecca Chambers, under orders to search for a missing prisoner, happens upon the stalled train and begins her investigation. Unauthorized or unlawful copying or downloading expressly prohibited. First Encounter: Zombie 1 The run-of-the mill Zombies encountered on board the train are slow-moving and purely melee attackers. At range, use your pistol to conserve ammo, and aim for the top of the head to score critical hits. Quickly switch to the shotgun once they get close. 2 First Encounter: Leech Infected Leeches have turned the train’s passengers into the walking dead. Pick them off with a single pistol round or simply wait until they attach themselves to your face and then cut them off with a swing of the knife. Wait too long, though, and they’ll inflict damage. 40 Multiple Leeches sometimes coalesce into a higher-order humanoid that is much greater, in both strength and ferocity, than the sum of its parts. Switch to a submachine gun or shotgun and finish it off before it attacks with its whiplike appendages. 3 A well-placed grenade will annihilate every Leech caught in the blast. 4 After the checkpoint, move right and pick up a hidden file. You also encounter a familiar bio-organic weapon (B.O.W.). The first-aid spray is arguably the best pickup in the game, as it completely restores your health once your health gauge falls to zero. Scan each mission map beforehand so you don’t miss this valuable item. PRIMA OFFICIAL GAME GUIDE Protected by copyright. Unauthorized or unlawful copying or downloading expressly prohibited. Train Derailment 1 5 First Encounter: Cerberus The Cerberus creatures were created by Umbrella through the fusing of the T-virus to Doberman DNA. They are the fastest enemy you’ve faced thus far, and once they get close enough they’ll leap up and bite you. A handgun will suffice one-on-one, but if they attack in packs, a shotgun is man’s best friend. primagames.com 6 In tight quarters, it’s always best to have a heavy-hitting weapon equipped, just in case an enemy sneaks up on you. Action! Cutscenes in the middle of levels generally signal an action sequence, and the one here is no different. Be prepared to dodge a giant claw by performing the action shown on the screen. 41 Boss Battle: Stinger Stinger is a bio-organic weapon of obvious origin. The exo-skeleton armor repels most small-arms fire, but it does have its weak spots. Aim for the head and the tip of the tail to inflict the most amount of damage. The shotgun’s power is ideal against Stinger, but don’t waste ammo when the tail is down and the head is hidden behind the beast’s huge claws. Instead, use this time to pick up the items scattered around the room. Stinger’s attacks are avoidable, provided you are quick enough with the controller! Be prepared to perform multiple dodges during the long battle. Protected by copyright. Unauthorized or unlawful copying or downloading expressly prohibited. THE FILE ROOM Collected here, for your viewing pleasure, are transcriptions of every in-game file. They have been sorted and arranged to provide the researcher a coherent and ordered account of the events that directly relate to the T-virus outbreak in the Arklay Mountains and the surrounding areas. Further, new information has surfaced regarding the events that occurred in 2003 at an Umbrella base located somewhere in southern BACKGROUND Russia. This section provides a recap of the events surrounding the infection and the crash of the Ecliptic Express, the destruction of the Umbrella Management Training Facility, the destruction of the Arklay Research Facility (the mansion), and the viral outbreak in and subsequent annihilation of Raccoon City. Resident Evil 0 Summary Resident Evil 0 Digest 1 Bizarre murder cases with people being found dead, their bodies halfeaten, were being reported in the areas near Raccoon City. The city’s elite special forces unit, S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service), sent Bravo Team to the scene. However, due to a mysterious engine failure, Bravo Team’s helicopter crashlanded in the forest. Bravo Team narrowly escaped with their lives and stumbled onto a heavily damaged prison convoy and the brutally dismembered corpses of the Marines in charge. Enrico Marini, Bravo Team’s commander, ordered that a search be made for Billy Coen, a former Marine who escaped from the convoy. The newest member of Bravo Team, Rebecca Chambers, discovered a train stopped in the woods and went inside to investigate. Apparently the train had met with some kind of accident—she found all of the passengers dead. One of the supposedly dead passengers came to life and attacked Rebecca. Facing certain death, Rebecca was rescued by the prisoner, Billy Coen. Rebecca was still suspicious of Billy but realized that they needed to work together if they wanted to survive the nightmare. Shortly after, the train suddenly started to move. It accelerated and was rapidly approaching dangerous speeds. To prevent the imminent derailment, the pair engaged the brake. However, it was too late and the train rolled on its side. The two barely managed to escape the wreck. Nearby was Umbrella’s Management Training Facility. 114 PRIMA OFFICIAL GAME GUIDE Protected by copyright.
