ENJOY YOUR
TIME IN INDIO
– IT’S AN
EXPERIENCE
YOU WON’T
SOON FORGET.
As Mayor, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the City of
Indio – a community rich in tradition and brimming with
opportunities. From arts and education to business and
development, the options are plentiful and I hope you’ll
experience all that Indio has to offer. Founded in 1930,
Indio is both the oldest city in the Coachella Valley and its
youngest in terms of population. A former Union Pacific
Railroad depot, Indio has blossomed into a vibrant, bustling
community of nearly 100,000 full- and part-time residents,
many of whom live, work and play every day within our
city limits.
Indio is also home to a plethora of world-class annual events,
from the International Tamale Festival and the Riverside
County Fair & National Date Festival in the winter, to the
Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach
Country Music Festival in spring. We’re especially proud of
these homegrown attractions, which attract hundreds of
thousands of visitors to Indio each year and provide
platforms to celebrate our shared culture.
As the spotlight on Indio continues to expand, so will our
efforts to update the city’s infrastructure and add to its
already impressive amenities. Whether that’s improving
freeway interchanges or adding community facilities, our goal
is to provide the highest quality city for our residents and
visitors alike.
IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN INDIO!
WITH AN ANNUAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 75.7 °F, MAJESTIC
VIEWS OF MOUNTAIN TOPS AND AN
ALMOST CONSTANTLY BLUE SKY,
WE SAY THAT A LOT HERE IN INDIO.
Nestled in the heart of the Coachella Valley, Indio is
center stage for one of the fastest-growing areas in
the United States. It is truly time to Discover Indio.
Known as the City of Festivals, Indio has become
world famous for its entertainment options. Home
to the world’s best music festivals, the Coachella
Music and Arts Festival rocks the desert twice
every year bringing music performers and visitors
from around the globe. Immediately following is the
equally successful Stagecoach Country Music
Festival. If you’re looking for family fun, check out
the Riverside County Fair and National Date
Festival or the annual International Tamale Festival.
The annual Indio Powwow celebrates the culture
and history of the desert’s native people. In Indio it
is a year-round celebration!
You can also immerse yourself in the arts at the Indio
Performing Arts Center and the Coachella Valley Art
Center, where local artisans create beauty every day.
Down the street, the Coachella Valley History
Museum houses art and cultural pieces that honor
the roots of our desert. It is almost impossible to run
out of activity options in Indio. Whether it is dining,
entertainment, golf, or a simple stroll through the
beautiful southwest desert, we have it. We invite you
to make yourself at home in our lovely city, and
celebrate the unique desert life that Indio offers.
Celebration is what we do best!

BY JOSHUA BONNER
CONTRIBUTIONS BY
DIANE HENSLEY
What began as a nice gathering place for friends has
become one of the premiere destinations for music
lovers in the Coachella Valley. Alex Haagen IV didn’t
start off with such grand plans. “Friends would
gather at this back lot during the Coachella Music
Festival to hang out. We would have a nice fire
going, just enjoying the music. After a while I
thought maybe we should build a stage back here,
upgrade it a bit. It wasn’t long before I turned that
thought towards an old date packing plant that
sat nearby.”
With a clear vision in mind, Haagen began
renovations on the former Da Vall date packing
plant behind the Hacienda del Toro. “I wanted to
take the vibe of Coachella, mix it with the Sunset
Strip of the 70’s and give live music a home in the
valley; a place where both local and touring bands
can perform.” The Date Shed opened its doors to
the public for the first time on November 25, 2011.
12
His industrial approach has transformed the shell of
a cinder block structure into a high-tech, minimalist
lounge and club with all the requisite
accoutrements. Inside, The Date Shed features
lounge space, a full-service bar, a DJ booth for
turntablists to drop plenty of phat beats, and a
professional grade stage for live music. The Date
Shed’s party and club space can be scaled for
smaller, more intimate groups, or an all out, all night
rave-a-thon. And when the backbeat winds down
or the band takes a break, respite can be found
outdoors on the covered patio for chilling out with
friends near the garden.
AS THE VENUE HAS EVOLVED, THE
PROMOTERS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
STRIKE A CAREFUL BALANCE WITH
THEIR MUSIC LINEUPS. NATIONAL
NAMES HAVE BECOME THE NORM FOR
THE DATE SHED, RECENTLY DRAWING
ACTS SUCH AS THE EXPENDABLES,
SAGE FRANCIS, AND WARREN G.
But Haagen understands there is a middle ground in
finding performers. “We like to book the
up-and-coming talent as well. There are a lot of
great artists that just need a venue to showcase
what they can do. We offer it to them, and
hopefully when they make it big they will remember
that we were a part of that and come back.”
The Date Shed doesn’t forget about the local bands
either. This year they hosted one of the qualifying
rounds for Tachevah, a local block party sponsored
in part by Goldenvoice that allows a local band to
perform at the Coachella Music Festival. This year
that spot went to Alchemy, a local Indio band that
came through The Date Shed qualifying event.
The venue has certainly caught the attention of
local music lovers. Tracy Dietlin, Publisher of
CV Weekly, a publication that focuses on
entertainment in the valley, gives The Date Shed
high marks.
“The Date Shed is the premiere live music venue of
the desert. Because it boasts a large stage,
professional sound and lighting, an actual relaxing
green room along with a separate private VIP room
with its own bar, a large outside patio area and a
bonfire pit, it makes it ideal for both local bands and
touring bands to want to perform there. With a 667
person capacity it is especially enjoyable to watch
our favorite touring bands play an intimate venue.”
Now in its 5th year The Date Shed is establishing a
desert legacy that is uniquely its own. “I really want
people from the area, especially the east valley, to
come and enjoy the music” says Haagen. “I think
over time the venue will definitely evolve, but I can’t
see it straying far from its roots. First and foremost
it’s about good music.” That it most definitely is.

DATE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
A testament to its roots, Indio remains
synonymous with the date industry. Dates have
been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands
of years. They are believed to have originated
around Iraq, and have been cultivated since ancient
times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt,
possibly as early as 4000 BC. In more recent times
they have found a home in the dry climate and
ample sunshine of the Coachella Valley. The Indio
area is host to one of the region’s most famous
date gardens.
OASIS DATE GARDENS
This 175-acre working date garden is home to the
Medjool and many other delicious varieties of
dates. Founded in 1912, Oasis Date Gardens has
grown to include a large packing house and retail
store. Oasis Date Gardens has developed a
reputation for excellence and quality, developing a
distribution network that spans from the Far East
to Europe. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample
their delicious fruit.

SHIELDS DATE GARDEN
Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California desert
in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working
long and hard to build up their business and educate
their customers about date culture. In the beginning,
Mr. Shields would give a lecture in the garden.
As the popularity of his lecture grew, Mr. Shields
incorporated a slide show, then recorded his
presentation in conjunction with the slide show so
that the show could be run several times a day.
Today, the 15-minute film ‘Romance and Sex Life of
the Date’ shows continuously during store hours,
where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his
favorite subject: the Date. Complete with a café,
retail store, and walking garden, Shields is one of the
Coachella Valley’s top tourist destinations.

DESERT HISTORY
Studying the history of the desert region you find
many footprints in the sand that created the desert
paradise we know today. The Native American
people who inhabited the desert region for centuries left their mark on early desert life, including
agriculture and water conservation. Early railroad
workers laid the groundwork for industry to make
its way through the valley and spur the rapid growth
of California. Even General George Patton left his
mark, training his troops at the Desert Training
Center in preparation for what would eventually
lead to important victories in Africa and Europe.
History is all around you in Indio.

For 59 years Eldorado Polo Club has welcomed top
polo players from around the world to the beautiful
Coachella Valley.
In 1957, eleven like-minded polo enthusiasts got
together and purchased 38 acres of land that did not
fit into the Eldorado Country Club masterplan.
The club began as a modest little venue but soon
grew in popularity drawing players from far and
wide. In 1979 the club land became desirable for
development and it is now the site of the Vintage
Club. It was time to move and with that challenge
came an opportunity to expand. The original
owners along with five additional members
purchased the current site on Madison Street in
Indio which has been home to Eldorado Polo Club
for more than 30 years.
With expansive mountain views at the east end of
the Coachella Valley, the club seems to be a
paradise for international guests, the near-perfect
back-to-back daytime temperatures offering idyllic
conditions to play polo during the Winter months.
Los Angeles is a scant two and a half hours on the
freeway and Palm Springs airport half an hour away,
but there is a magic feeling of isolation, of being a
long penalty shot from the end of the world.
Each November, large trucks and trailers carrying
superb equine athletes from across the US descend
upon Indio in order to set up shop for some of the
most exciting and competitive polo in the country.
A great sense of community fills the air at Eldorado
as the club becomes home to more than 500 horses
preparing for competition. In the crisp early hours
of the morning, the mile-long track is packed with
groups of horses trotting to reach peak physical
fitness for tournament matches taking place January
through March.
The club boasts more than ten regulation grass
fields, a stick and ball field, practice hitting cage,
exercise track, and onsite stabling making it one of
the largest polo clubs in the country.
18
Eldorado Polo Club offers varying levels of
competition for players of all abilities. The peak
levels of competition are the 12-Goal and 7-Goal
Sunday matches which feature many of the top
international players. There is also the Pro Pool
amateur league as well as the Polo and Riding
Academy for those looking to take up the sport.
Many players have been known to take up the sport
with no previous riding experience!
Attending polo as a spectator has become
synonymous with the desert winter lifestyle.
Each Sunday, thousands of polo fans pour into
Eldorado to feel the rumble of galloping hooves as
players reach speeds of more than 35 MPH – all
while maintaining control of a little white ball. Polo
is, in fact, a contact sport and therefore it is often
described as “hockey on horseback.” Players look to
score through the uprights at each end of the
ten-acre field. It doesn’t take long for first-time
attendees to get wrapped up in the excitement of a
match as spectators get up to speed with live
play-by-play commentary from resident announcer
Tony Gregg.
Contrary to some popular belief, everyone is
welcome to attend. Guests can enjoy the polo
sidelines in casual comfort by tailgating. With a few
lawn chairs and a picnic, you have your own perfect
polo event. If you prefer to enjoy the spectacle of
polo in style, a reservation in the Clubhouse may be
more to your liking. Overlooking the main field,
guests may enjoy a full-service restaurant and bar,
with seating available for parties from two to 100+.
The venue is also offered for special events.
OPENING DAY AT THE CLUB HOUSE
TAKES PLACE ON SUNDAY, JANUARY
10 AND CONTINUES EVERY SUNDAY
(EXCEPT MARCH 6) THROUGH APRIL 3.
GATES OPEN AT 10 AM AND MATCHES
TAKE PLACE AT NOON AND 2 PM.
ENTRY IS JUST $10 PER CAR.

A FESTIVAL IS DEFINED AS
“A SPECIAL TIME OR
EVENT WHEN PEOPLE
GATHER TO CELEBRATE
A SHARED CULTURE,
FEATURING A PROGRAM
OF EVENTS OR
ENTERTAINMENT WITH
A SPECIFIC FOCUS.”
For now let’s stay focused on Indio’s festival
heritage, which dates back to the first Date Festival,
held in 1921 – nine years before the city was
officially incorporated. Back then, dates were a
relatively unknown, exotic fruit in the Western
Hemisphere, having been brought over from
Algiers. Since 1947, the annual Date Festival has
been held in February on the Riverside County
Fairgrounds. Over the years, it has evolved to
include live music performances by popular
contemporary artists, the naming of Queen
Scheherazade and her court, monster truck shows,
carnival rides, rodeo events and more.
THE CITY OF FESTIVALS IS
DEFINED MORE
SUCCINCTLY: INDIO.
Another signature Indio event is the International
Tamale Festival, which is held each December and
holds the Guinness World Record for being the
largest festival of its kind. Upwards of 130,000
tamale lovers fill the streets of Old Town to sample
every type of tamale imaginable – from traditional
fare to vegan and vegetarian options. Other
activities include a classic car show, folkloric dancing
and a variety of live entertainment for all ages. With
all that to offer, it’s no wonder that the Food
Network named it one of the top-ten food festivals
in the country.
In many ways the Coachella Valley’s fast-growing
city is also its cultural epicenter, boasting a vibrant
music and arts community, and a revitalized
restaurant scene. Indio’s warm, year-round climate,
picturesque scenery and flourishing youth
population combine to make it a desirable tourism
destination, attracting hundreds of thousands of
revelers each year. That energy extends to the
plethora of exciting internationally recognized
events, which celebrate this unique community’s
shared culture and bolster the city’s reputation.
Make no mistake – Indio is the City of Festivals.
However, it earned that reputation across the
decades, as opposed to arriving pre-packaged with
the inaugural Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival
in 1999. But we’ll get to that monster event later…
20
Thanks to Indio’s terrific partners, the city
continues to host a wide variety of popular events
each year, including The Southwest Arts Festival®
Indio, the Rhythm, Wine & Brews Experience, and
the Discover Indio Block Party. These celebrations
not only serve to increase tourism to the city, they
put Indio on the world stage.
And the spotlight is getting bigger every year.
BY MICHAEL FELCI
Fall, 1993. The grunge explosion that began in
Seattle just a few years ago has spread nationwide.
Seemingly overnight, bands like Nirvana, Alice In
Chains, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots are
fixtures on MTV and have replaced Gun N Roses,
Def Leppard, and Aerosmith on the charts.
In October, Pearl Jam releases its second album,
“Vs.,” which sells nearly one million copies in its first
week, outperforming all other entries in the top ten
combined. And yet, things are far from ideal for the
newly crowned biggest band in the world. At odds
with their record label and embroiled in a pricing
dispute with Ticketmaster, Pearl Jam boycotts Los
Angeles in favor of an unlikely venue two hours to
the east.
On Nov. 5, Pearl Jam performs for nearly 25,000
fans at Empire Polo Club in Indio. But like
Woodstock, far more would later claim to have
witnessed this seminal desert music event, which
sowed the seeds for bigger things to come.
Promoter Paul Tollett, whose company Goldenvoice
booked Pearl Jam at Empire, was inspired to create
an annual event based on the Glastonbury model: an
outdoor festival with multiple stages and art
installations. Tollett later articulated his vision:
“Even before we looked at [Empire Polo Club], it hit
us. We wanted it to be far. So you surrender. So
you can't leave your house and see a couple bands
and be back home that night. We want you to go
out there, get tired, and curse the show by Sunday
afternoon. That sunset, and that whole feeling of
Coachella hits you.”
Six years later, in October of 1999, the Coachella
Valley Music & Arts Festival was born. The inaugural
two-day event featured Beck, Morrissey, and Rage
Against the Machine – all of whom would return to
the festival in later years. After taking a hiatus in the
year Y2K, Coachella returned in April 2001 and has
been a mainstay in Indio ever since.
Throughout its existence, Coachella has blossomed
like a desert flower, first adding a third day and later
a second weekend to meet the overwhelming
ticket demand. With pop culture icons like
Paul McCartney, Prince, Madonna, Kayne West,
Jay-Z, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Jack White,
Roger Waters, and AC/DC as headliners, it now
stands as the premier music festival in North
America, attracting hundreds of thousands
each year.
For many Coachella attendees, music put us on the
map. And every April, all roads lead to Indio. For
more information on the festival visit coachella.com.

From the Bakersfield twang of Buck Owens to
the Outlaw stylings of Merle Haggard, California
boasts a rich country music heritage that, up until a
decade ago, had largely been ignored or forgotten.
However, it wasn’t an artist or a band that kicked
off this new golden age for country in the Golden
State. It was a festival.
Stagecoach: California’s Country Music Festival was
founded in 2007 by Goldenvoice’s Paul Tollett as a
sort of “cousin” of the wildly popular Coachella
Valley Music & Arts Festival. Like Coachella, it’s
held over a long weekend in April at the Empire
Polo Club in Indio. Unlike Coachella, Stagecoach
showcases a variety of artists that fit under the
wide brim of “country” – from mainstream pop
to alternative, bluegrass, rockabilly, Americana,
and even Southern Rock.
Many of the artists have returned to Stagecoach
over the years, citing the festival’s unique setting
and welcoming vibe. The lineup for the 2016 edition
includes Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Little Big
Town, the Band Perry, and the Doobie Brothers.
22
But the appeal of Stagecoach extends well beyond
the Mane Stage and Palomino Tent. Days before the
gates open, a caravan of RVs with plates from all
over the country begin rolling into town, ready to
kick up a good time in the camping area. Like all
great parties, it can get a little rowdy, but revelers
say it’s the only way to experience Stagecoach.
Throw in a barbecue contest sanctioned by the
Kansas City BBQ Society and plenty of great local
eats, and you’ve got yourself a good time in the
warm California sun.
In less than a decade, Stagecoach has grown
exponentially to become the highest-grossing
country festival in the world, attended by upwards
of 60,000 country fans each day. And with
additional land to stretch out and continued
improvements to the infrastructure, that
experience will only get better.

IS COUNTRY. FOR MORE

The Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival
is celebrating 70 years in 2016! Presented by Fantasy
Springs Resort Casino, the Fair is an annual tradition
for Coachella Valley residents, as well as the entire
County of Riverside and beyond. It all started as a
festival to celebrate the end of the annual date
harvest in the desert region, the major commercial
date-producing area in the western hemisphere.
Over the years, it has become something families
look forward to, knowing they have ten days of
wholesome fun and entertainment every February,
starting the Friday before Presidents' Day.
During the early years, buildings with an Arabic
motif were constructed and within two years an
Arabian Nights Pageant and Queen Scheherazade
contest debuted. These two events are still very
much part of the Fair today. The Pageant runs
every night of the Fair and continues to mesmerize
crowds with a talented cast of singers and dancers
in dazzling regalia.
Today, fairgoers are entertained daily by live magic
acts, a hypnotist, comedians, cooking shows and
interactive exhibits that are available every day of
the Fair. Two Carnivals await the entire family with
extreme rides for thrill seekers, as well as rides for
the young or young at heart.
There are more than 60 food booths where you will
be sure to find something that makes your mouth
water. Last year, fairgoers enjoyed date shakes,
cinnamon rolls topped with dates, deep fried dates
wrapped in bacon, and let’s not forget Pink’s
delicious and very unique Indio Date Dog.
The Grandstand Arena is home to the hilarious
Camel & Ostrich Races that continue to captivate
audiences with their crazy riders and unexpected
animal behavior. Bull Riding, Monster Trucks,
Freestyle Motocross, and a Demolition Derby also
entertain and excite audiences young and old.
The Fantasy Springs Concert Pavilion always has an
exciting line up. There’s no need to buy a separate
ticket to watch these concerts because all headliner
entertainment is included with the price of
admission. Recent acts have included Brett Eldredge,
Daughtry, Kool & the Gang, the Commodores,
Ramon Ayala, and Los Tucanes de Tijuana.

‘Tis the season for tamales! The Annual Indio
International Tamale Festival is held the first
weekend of December. The Festival, which
continues to grow in size each year and generate
national media attention, is held on the streets of
Downtown Indio. The Indio International Tamale
Festival has grown from a half-day event that drew
2,500 people to an event that now attracts more
than 125,000. Many of the vendors are local
non-profit organizations that represent churches
and school groups as well as restaurants and
renowned chefs.
Approximately 70 tamale vendors selling all types of
tamales (traditional, gourmet, and dessert such as
strawberry, chocolate, date and raisin) will
collectively sell more than 250,000 tamales during
the festival making Indio the Tamale Capital of the
Nation! There are another 150 vendors selling a
variety of arts, crafts, and other holiday
merchandise.
Activities and entertainment include a carnival,
rides, games, inflatable bouncers, rock climbing, a
‘Best Tamale’ competition with trophies in several
categories, and a tamale-eating contest with awards
for those who eat the most.
24
There is continuous music and dance throughout
the festival on four different stages. A variety of acts
are featured that include local and professional
dancers, singers, and musicians.
The festival holds two Guinness World Records.
In 1999, Chef John Sedlar prepared the World’s
Largest Tamale. The tamale measured one foot in
diameter and 40 feet in length. In 2000, a second
record was set when Guinness recognized the
Festival as the World’s Largest Tamale Festival with
more than 120,000 in attendance at the event.
The Food Network TV show “All American Food
Festivals” selected the Tamale Festival as one of the
Top 10 Food Festivals in the nation!
The Festival provides free parking, admission and
entertainment for everyone. Come and spend some
time with us during the first weekend in December
in our warm winter sunshine. There is plenty of
excitement and tamales, tamales, tamales!

Each year, thousands of people will arrive at the
Cabazon Indian Reservation to celebrate Native
American culture at the Indio Powwow. These
events sponsored by the Cabazon Band of Mission
Indians welcome visitors from throughout the
United States, Canada and Mexico for what has
become part family reunion, part cultural revival,
and a thoroughgoing celebration appealing
to everyone.
The tradition of Indian dancing is ancient, but
today's Powwows only developed in the past
hundred years. The focus is dance – a series of
open social dances called Intertribals, mixed with
competition in several dance categories that were
once part of spiritual ceremonies, preparation for
war, healing rituals, or celebrations of triumph.
Each Powwow begins by celebrating the traditional
music of the Cahuilla people–the Bird Songs. The
Bird Songs describe the events and experiences of
their people from the time of the emergence of
their ancestors and their migrations that followed.
Young and old, they arrive from throughout
Southern California and Arizona.
They sing and dance individually and also together
demonstrating a resurgence of a nearly extinct
cultural heritage. They fill the Powwow arena,
dancing; gourd rattles shaking in one rhythm with
voices ringing out into the desert night. The Grand
Entry time is a feature event of every Powwow. It is
a wonderful procession of color and sound that was
borrowed from Wild West shows and usually
happens twice a day. Sounds overlap in layers.
Men beat on a drum slowly at first, setting the pace,
directing the movement, and sing in high-pitched
voices. Underneath the singing is a rhythmic jingle,
the sound of hundreds of bells on men's ankles and
thousands of rolled-up snuff-can lids sewn onto
dresses, all jangling with the drumbeat as men,
women, and children dance. The dances are
intricate and varied and each one has a special
meaning or story.
Powwows today are far more than a salute to the
past. They provide an opportunity for the young to
learn from their elders and carry on traditions. It
preserves Native American traditions of sharing,
hospitality and generosity.

the mountains cast shadows across the desert and
the fading light transforms the skies into a dark vault
filled with luminous stars. All the senses ignite,
bringing a deep appreciation for a quintessential
Californian moment. Capturing a California vibe like
no other, the Rhythm, Wine & Brews Experience at
Empire Polo Club comes alive the weekend of March
4th and 5th, 2016 with another signature Coachella
Valley event.
Food trucks will line the perimeter of the grass and
local restaurants plan to offer the hottest trends in
culinary catering to satiate the hungry friends who
will line up to nosh on a smorgasbord of delicious
delicacies. Lobster tacos, portabella burgers, and
Hawaiian sliders have all been festival favorites in
the past and this year’s treats are set to surpass
expectations as vendors have planned new, fabulous
menus designed to please even the most discerning
of palettes.
26
Beer stands will dot the landscape serving up a bevy
of beverages in the form of stouts, IPAs and lagers
for eager connoisseurs. More than 80 craft brew
merchants are poised to share their impressive
California-inspired drafts, represented by such
notables as Aftershock Brewing Company, La
Trappe, Bosteels & Bockor, Modern Times Beer,
as well as local desert darlings, La Quinta Brewing
Company and Coachella Valley Brewing Company.
The experience will invite excitement; it’s going to
be a hip scene filled with singular visual art displays
as well as fire and juggling street performers engaged
to entertain. When the lively event is in full swing,
fun activities will abound to delight the crush, as they
toss beanbags to win rock tees courtesy of Ernie Ball
or snap selfies at numerous engaging vantage points.
As dusk turns to dark, incredible lighting effects will
give the property a warm glow, adding to the
charged electricity in the air and setting the tone for
a much-anticipated musical experience. This year,
the main stage concert is comprised of opening act
California Rockers Dream Club, followed by reggae
phenom and Grammy nominated Matisyahu, leading
up to headliner 311.

SCHUBERT
Have you ever sat around a table of great, simple food and wine
and felt transported? Or gotten lost in a soft focus dream?
That is what Los Angeles-based artist Stephen Schubert likes to
explore in his work, utilizing a mostly unconscious process.
Captivated by themes of transitions and transformations,
Schubert’s abstracts are created on elevated birch panels with a
technique that includes placing up to 15 layers of paint. His
approach includes dragging a Spackle knife, board or other
found object over the wood surface, then applying a topcoat of
resin. He then begins this labor-intensive process all over again,
which results in a painting with phenomenal vibrancy, great
depth of color and surprising imagery.
Schubert’s love of foreign cinema and attendance at film festivals
around the world, watching different perspectives on screen as
well as from the cities and towns in which the festivals take
place, have provided stimulation and inspiration for his work.
No stranger to television and film sets, his work was
prominently featured in the Steve Carrell film, “Dinner for
Schmucks.” Prior to becoming an artist, Schubert was an actor,
the spokesperson for Lincoln Mercury and Macy’s, and a guest
anchor on E! Entertainment Network. He also appeared in a
classic Seinfeld episode. Specializing in custom work, he loves
collaborating with designers and enjoys projects in high-end
residential, hospitality and health care design.

I have been in love with art all of my life. From the gorgeous
refrigerator crayon drawings as a little schoolgirl to my new
style, scratchboard, I cannot look at something without
wondering how it would look as art. My creations over the years
have been primarily acrylics, but recently I have turned to
scratchboard as it offers the promise of detail that I had tried
but failed to achieve with paints. From my first use of finger
paints and crayons to create kindergarten masterpieces, I have
been in love with painting and creating. Unafraid to try new
styles and techniques, I strive to evolve as an artist whether it is
my acrylic paintings or my newest passion, Scratch Board Art.
When I am not enjoying the rural life with my husband and my
cats, you will find me in my art studio totally immersed in the
creative process.
David Palmer combines the vocabulary of Pop Art with an Italian
Renaissance sensibility. His paintings are inspired by dreams and
childhood memories, and a fascination with the physical world.
Their surfaces reveal patches of underlying color, reminiscent of
aging frescoes and peeling billboards.

“When I start a painting, I don’t know exactly what it’s going to
look like when it’s finished. I start with an idea, but at some point

Richard’s artwork writes epic poetry within the visual. For the
past 15 years, California artist Curtner has created unique
artwork for thousands of clients across the country, blending his
artistic talents with his passion for the written word. His word
collages are created by combining hundreds of cutouts of
written text all pertaining to a particular theme. He scours
through hundreds of highest quality magazines searching for
colors, words, and phrases. Every detail in the collage is an
individual cut out. Nothing is painted on or manipulated with a
computer. Everything is cut out by hand with an X-Acto knife,
glued together carefully, and then varnished. The end result is a
distinctive form of artwork in which you can see something
different every time you look at it. His works are a “green” art.
All the materials come from donated magazines. “People would
rather donate the magazines to me than have them go to a land
fill. It gives the magazines a second life,” Curtner explains. He is
motivated by a variety of themes. Lately he has been
concentrating on cityscapes and figurative pieces. All of his
figures in the artwork are faceless. This allows for a broader
interpretation. People can put themselves in the pieces, or
people they know. It allows for a greater connection between
the viewer and the artwork. Richard Curtner is a resident of
Coachella Valley. He exhibits full time throughout the United
States. His unique word collages are displayed in museums,
galleries (both online and off). They are in publication in
international and domestic art magazines, books, and other
media. The artist’s award-winning creations are prized
worldwide by both private and public collectors.
When painting, Diane McClary’s primary focus is on the color of the
light that she sees in the scene. Diane’s painting style has been
influenced by her past studies with the brilliant Russian
impressionist, Sergei Bongart. Over time, Diane has evolved her own
unique artistic style, which draws upon Bongart’s approach to
painting and her own natural talents with color and composition.
McClary is a plein air painter who favors the alla prima process of
completing her on-location paintings in a single sitting. Later,
working in her studio, these small, carefully rendered plein air
paintings often become the inspiration for her larger works.

year-round resident of the Coachella Valley. Diane’s home and studio
is located in a beautiful spot at the top of the picturesque

for her work and has had solo painting exhibitions in Washington,

Cheryl Strayed. The story is about Strayed’s life-changing hike from
the Mexican border north to Washington on the rugged and
unforgiving Pacific Coast Trail.

GUNN
TRIGERE
As a lifelong woodworker, Walter Wogee has made most of the
furniture in his log home. Upon retiring from teaching science seven
years ago, he took on the challenge of making a Maloof-inspired
rocker. After making a few chairs, his wife and friends encouraged
Wogee to enter a local art show in Lake Arrowhead, CA, where he
won the best-in-show award, sold two rockers and received
commissions to make two more. He recently finished his
40th rocker.
Gunn started off her life as an artist making jewelry - sterling silver,
hand wrought, one-of-a-kind. Initially she would purchase the stones
that she would incorporate into her designs but later she got the
urge to create her own cabochons thus being able to control the
shape and the color herself. Glass was the answer to her desire.
Hence she bought a kiln, glass and all the necessary tools to start on
her new venture. Now, a few years later she has taken that idea a
few steps further and created what she calls “wall jewelry,” an
extension of his glass cabochons, the same but bigger. Big enough to
hang on a wall or rest on a stand or an easel. She approaches each
design as if it were a painting on canvas, overlapping colors to
achieve a multitude of hues, shapes and patterns. This imbues her
work with the subtlety and movement of watercolor, while retaining
the richness and depth that is only possible with glass. However her
canvas is glass and the pigment is also glass. In order to make the
image permanent it needs to be fired to 1,500 degrees F which
usually takes about 20 hours. Often a piece will require two firings,
sometimes even three. Prices $145 - $875
Each ergonomic rocker created by Wogee is an heirloom quality
creation that is both beautiful and extremely comfortable. Spending
at least one month on each, he pays particular attention to selecting
and matching each piece of beautiful domestic and exotic wood to
enhance the overall design of the chair. All rockers feature
headboards with special grain patterns and knots, deeply sculpted
seats, laminated bent back slats that flex to fit your lower back, and
laminated re-curved runners. Contrasting wood accents provide a
special touch that emphasizes the leg to seat joints and elegant lines
of the chair. Rockers are Wogee’s passion and each one is unique
piece of functional art. He also makes other types of chairs, as well
as tables, bedroom furniture and desks, and accepts commissions for
special pieces that interest him.

TREI
Silvio Silvestri is a plein air artist in the Southern California area who
paints on location throughout United States and Europe. Silvio
comes from a long linage of artists including his father, uncle and
grandfather – all in the arts or allied fields. His grandfather was a
sculptor and his father an architect. His uncle manufactured
mannequins and fine art statues. His mother presented him with a
paint-by-numbers hobby set. As a teenager, he painted apartment
buildings and houses to pay his way through college. He minored in
art, taking up sculpting and watercolor. Silvio was a psychotherapist
for 30 years, while also painting various subject matter including
coastals, deserts and California foothills. Seeking a stronger
statement and more involvement in art, he began oil painting in the
late 1980s. Self taught until then, frustration with limited skills
motivated him to seek outside instruction and he studied with Kenn
Backhaus, Ron Rencher, George Strickland, Jove Wang, TM Nicholas,
and Robert Sandidge. He began winning awards for his art in the
early 1990’s and began entering plein air events in 2001 where he
won an honorary mention at the Carmel Art Festival and numerous
awards over the past 13 years. He also began teaching other artists
in order to share his gifts and skills. He spent time in the desert as a
child and seeks to render increased beauty in his desert paintings.
His work is featured in galleries across the country and his studio is
open by appointment. Commissions are welcome either from a
photo or on location.
Elaine Trei’s love of nature and color can be seen across her entire
portfolio of work. Whether painting still life or scenery, in
watercolor or oils, Trei’s enthusiasm for her subject matter shines
through. She translates views of flowers, landscapes, fruit and people
through her own imagination, and the results are uniquely hers:
slightly impressionistic, intensely colorful and always engaging.
Numerous collectors have purchased Trei’s art, and she has earned
first-place ribbons as well as other recognitions. She has exhibited
throughout San Diego County and has been accepted into multiple
juried shows, including the prestigious Rancho Santa Fe Rotary
“Arturo” Auction through Christie's. Her work is well known in the
San Bernardino mountain communities of Running Springs and Big
Bear Lake, where she has exhibited in “The Gallery” and at popular
annual outdoor shows including “Art on the Lake,” "Village Art
Walk" and "Blues for the Zoo." Trei’s work will also be shown at the
Artisans ETC. in Big Bear Lake, CA.

"I paint happiness as an intuitive adventure,” explains Trei.
"My paintings reflect the happiness I feel when I paint landscapes,

faces of people who see them, providing an ‘Ah-ha’ experience—a
feeling of peaceful, joyful serenity. Enjoy!” Trei accepts requests for
custom work from individual collectors, interior decorators and
interior designers. She is currently considering representation and

DOOLITTLE
FEATURED
ARTIST
TERRY
SAUVÉ
Now a full-time artist, Mark Doolittle holds a Doctorate in biology
and enjoyed a successful biomedical research career spanning 25
years. Specializing in the area of coronary artery disease, his work
culminated in the discovery of a novel gene contributing to
triglyceride levels in the blood. In 2002 he began experimenting with
carving gourds and wood, finding a style that reflected his
background in biology, and became a full-time artist in 2012.
Doolittle’s artwork employs a unique and distinctive vision of nature
and reflects a creative diversity of form and function, with no piece
ever duplicated; most feature fossils or minerals that are integrated
into the overall design. Each piece is conceived and executed by the
artist alone, using gourds, exotic hardwoods and burls from around
the world. Although his style involves intricate carvings and texturing
involving many hours of bench work, he never employs laser or
CNC machinery, crafting each piece using rotary burrs and bits as
well as hand tools, such as rasps and chisels.
After painting “for the joy of it” for most of her life, Terry Sauvé
moved to San Francisco in 1996 to train formally at the Academy of
Art College. Here she honed her craft, studying with some of the
area’s best painters including Brian Blood, Craig Nelson,
William Maughn and Randall Sexton. It was in 2000, when Sauvé
participated in her first public art festival, that the doors to the art
world flew open. One Sausalito’s best galleries immediately picked
up her work, and she has since exhibited in galleries and shows
throughout the country.
Doolittle’s style and approach are greatly influenced by his
background in biology and scientific research. His artwork expresses
the dynamic form of growth and symmetry encountered in cells and
tissues, as well as in whole organisms throughout the natural world.
Rather than portray accurate biological structures in his artwork, he
uses the reiteration of simple shapes and abstract forms to achieve
the perception of organic complexity. His aim is for a piece to
appear as if it arose by the process of natural growth. Wood seems a
natural choice of medium for Doolittle, as it is derived from the
processes of biological growth that are the foundation of his
artistic style.

Today Sauvé focuses on painting the landscape. Feeling a deep
connection with nature, she is inspired by the natural light falling
over a scene. Capturing this magical quality of light is one focus of
her paintings, as is “pushing” the color found in nature to enhance
the painting. Her method includes taking photographs, making
sketches and occasional color studies on location. From these
references she works on larger finished paintings in her studio,
where she transmits what she has absorbed from studying color and
light in nature into her paintings.

@ Dinah Shore Drive.
October 14, 1937 – December 7, 2015
September 19, 1933 – September 24, 2015
Elliott Newton enjoyed careers in the fashion and retail
industries, until a life-changing experience at the age of
53 connected him to his creative side. After studying
pottery at College of the Desert, he was drawn to the
magic created when the kiln reveals the alchemy of the
high-fire slow-cooling crystalline glaze process. Newton
expressed his creative vision with mineral color glazes
applied to Asian and early Roman style forms, finding it
to be quiet, healing and inspiring. A multi-talented artist
with a wildly inventive imagination, he came to be known
as the "Potter of La Quinta."
Nancy Lee Whittemore grew up in the San Francisco
Bay area, where her desire to be an artist was evident
very early in life. Formally educated at San Jose State
University where she majored in commercial art,
Whittemore began experimenting with Prismacolor
wax pencils early in her career, creating special effects
that made her drawings look like actual photographs.
The enormous versatility and incredible originality of
Newton’s work created a strong impression at local and
regional shows, earning him a ‘Best of Ceramics’ title at
Fiesta Hermosa in Hermosa Beach and Art Affaire in
Rancho Mirage. An exhibitor at Southwest Arts Festival,
Indio from 2006 to 2014, his pottery was named ‘Best of
Craft’ four years in a row and he twice served as a
member of the jury.
Newton, who taught pottery workshops during the
summer, wanted his art to move people in such a way
that they are pushed into some type of creative output.
"I want my art to be prolific,” he explained. ”I want it to
scream with outer beauty, but also to whisper softly –
gently calling viewers to an inner peace. I love the
product of my craft, its place in the world, and in
people's lives."
Newton is survived by his wife of 16 years, Tracey.

You’ll love what you see!
A resident of Sierra Madre for 34 years, her greatest
joy was her involvement with the Friends of the Sierra
Madre Library’s annual Fine Arts Fair. In addition to
being an exhibitor, she was on the Exhibits Committee
as a juror and new talent scout. Whittemore was a
Signature Artist with Women Artists of the West, and
was recognized with numerous awards. She
participated in a variety of art shows since the 1960’s,
including the Sawdust Art Festival and Art-A-Fair in
Laguna Beach, The Beverly Hills artSHOW, Sierra
Madre Art Fair, Indian Wells Art Festival and the
Southwest Arts Festival in Indio.
Well-loved and respected in the art community,
Whittemore’s works hang in many private collections.
Art was within her soul, and her work transcended all
boundaries: young children in a carefree world, people
reflecting in their thoughtful moments, American Indian
portraits, and her latest love...horses. She did not
discriminate her subjects, and through the medium of
art her spirit was connected with all indigenous human
beings in the world.
Whittemore is survived by her daughter Kelley Doyle
Hanna and grandson Taylor Hanna.

“I LOVE THIS CITY, THIS STATE,
AND, THIS COUNTRY.”
These are the prophetic words of Indio
businessman Nachhattar S. Chandi who is fast
becoming one of California’s biggest business
success stories. April 9, 2016 marks the 25th year
since Mr. Chandi’s arrival in the United States and
the city of Indio. He often tells friends, family, and
others “I came from India to Indio, and as they say,
the rest is history.”
HE IS PLACING HIS BETS ON INDIO.
2015 was a banner year for Chandi Group, USA.
Mr. Chandi officially dedicated his new corporate
headquarters in the City of Indio, making a
multi-million dollar investment in a new suite of
offices in the rapidly developing commercial center
in Indio’s north side. Not far from his corporate
office, one will find one of his three Indio ARCO
AM PM gas stations, with convenience store and car
wash, and directly across the street, along Jackson,
is his soon-to-be open Dunkin’ Donuts franchise,
the first of its kind in the entire Coachella Valley.
Further west is approximately 80 acres of
mixed-use commercial, retail and residential
property known as “Northgate Crossing,” located
at the intersection of Jefferson and Indio Boulevard,
and regarded as the gateway to the City of Indio.
The existing ARCO AM PM gas station there will
soon be joined by other businesses. You would
think most business owners would be happy with
this pace of business growth but not Mr. Chandi.
Let’s see what else he has in store for us.

After spending just a few minutes with Nachhattar Chandi you realize just how much he believes in the City of
Indio and that it is “the place to be” as the Coachella Valley and Chandi Group, USA continue to expand east
along the Interstate 10 corridor. Mr. Chandi’s next project, “Golf Center Village,” is under development less than
two miles to the east of his corporate headquarters, at Golf Center Parkway and Interstate 10. Golf Center
Village spans 20+ acres and is designed to be an eye-catching retail and entertainment center for the residents of
Indio to enjoy for years to come. Of course, it will include an ARCO AM PM gas station, convenience store and
car wash – the basic foundation of Mr. Chandi’s business success story. But again, let’s see what else he has in
store for us, as there is one thing you can count on with Mr. Chandi: there will be more.

El Mexicali Café is known for serving Mexican home
cooking, carefully crafted since 1981. Along with
traditional favorites, we have developed a few new
mouth-watering delights, wowing with signature
dishes like our delectable Shrimp Stuffed Peppers or
our Mexicali Special. We consistently maintain the
flair for authentic Mexican food.
In our 34 years, growing from one restaurant to
three, our mom Carmen Murguia, the Matriarch of
this family, always said “good food and good service
is the key to a successful business.” We at El
Mexicali Café continue to live by this philosophy.
Mom, now retired, has left her legacy to her
daughters – Laura, Lupe, Catalina, and Monica –
who, with their children, carry on the tradition,
growth, and success of our business. We would
like to thank our long-time local and seasonal
customers for your support year after year by
celebrating good food and friendship. We appreciate
each and every one of you and look forward to

INDIAN PALMS COUNTRY CLUB
& RESORT
The centerpiece of the resort facility is the 27-hole
championship golf course, which has recently undergone a
three-phase revitalization process designed to modernize the
facility while preserving the historic integrity of the property.
Indian Palms' three nine hole courses – the Mountain, Royal, and
Indian nines – are designed to provide tests of accuracy rather
than strength and distance.
In addition, each ‘nine’ offers a slightly diverse style of golf
challenge, taking full advantage of its majestic surroundings, and
offering the perfect challenge to ignite the interest of any caliber
of golfer. Throughout your round, you will come across
strategically placed bunkers and water hazards on 15 of the 27
holes. In contrast to most desert courses, hundreds of mature
trees line each fairway. The signature hole is the 301-yard par-4
5th hole on the Mountain nine – featuring an island green.

SHADOW HILLS GOLF CLUB
Shadow Hills Golf Club is a thing of beauty. A Schmidt-Curley,
Inc. design, it spreads itself across the desert floor as seamlessly
and elegantly as if it flowed into the valley from the surrounding
mountains. As the shadows move across the valley, and the
purples and browns of the desert-scape mix with the deep
greens of Shadow Hills, you’ll understand where the name
comes from!
The expansive practice facility has two tee levels, a short-game
practice area with a true-to-speed green and a private practice
area for group and one-on-one lessons with the professional
staff. A day at Shadow Hills Golf Club offers some of the most
beautiful landscape the California desert has to offer.

SALTON SEA STATE RECREATION AREA
One of the world's largest inland seas and lowest spots on earth
at 227 feet below sea level, the Salton Sea was created in 1905
when high spring flooding on the Colorado River crashed the
canal gates leading into the developing Imperial Valley. For the
next 18 months the entire volume of the Colorado River rushed
downward into the Salton Trough. By the time engineers were
finally able to stop the breaching water in 1907, the Salton Sea
had been born at 45 miles long and 20 miles wide – equaling
about 130 miles of shoreline. Salton Sea State Recreation Area
covers 14 miles of the northeastern shore and has long been a
popular site for campers, boaters and anglers. Varner Harbor
within the SRA provides easy access to the sea for boating and
water skiing. Kayakers, campers, birdwatchers, photographers,
and hikers can enjoy the site's many recreational opportunities.

While the original school facilities constructed in
1951 consisted of four classrooms, a kindergarten
room, and the school office, improvements came
along as the years went by. In 1987, a computer lab
was introduced to the campus. Housed in a small
building, it was a significant enhancement to the
school’s academic program, ushering in the school’s
effort to educate students using modern
technology. The preschool was opened on campus
in October 1996, making it the Coachella Valley’s
first Catholic preschool.

construction project to expand its preschool and
open a new multi-purpose hall on campus. For a
school that started out in 1951 as six rooms in
downtown indio, Our Lady of Perpetual Help
School and Preschool continues to grow by leaps
and bounds.
PRESENT DAY
HISTORY
The parish community that Our Lady of Perpetual
Help School and Preschool belongs to laid its roots
in Indio nearly 80 years ago when a Franciscan
Mission was established on the site in 1928. Seeing a
need for Catholic-based education, Father Joseph
Mackey, parish pastor from 1948-1955, dreamt of
building Our Lady of Perpetual Help School. On
September 11, 1951, the area’s first Catholic school
in the eastern Coachella Valley opened its doors to
218 students.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame were
entrusted to run the newly built school. The School
Sisters of Notre Dame continued to serve Our
Lady of Perpetual Help School for 45 years. On
their five-acres, these women dedicated their lives
to the education of Christian youth, leaving behind
a strong legacy of Gospel values and academic
excellence.
70
In 2007, OLPH school’s K-8 students and teachers
moved into a new two-story, state-of-the-art
complex, with upgraded computer lab, thanks to
the generosity of private benefactors, Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Martin. The school also acquired adjoining
land to allow for future expansion, and it’s this
future expansion that is now being realized today.
2007
2016
Today, approximately 260 students receive an
accredited, faith-based education each year in our
preschool program, transitional Kindergarten
program, and grades K-8. Subjects in our K-8
curriculum include:
• Religion
• Family Life and Sexuality
• Language Arts
• Reading, Literature, and Phonics
• Mathematics, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra
• Science
• Health and Nutrition
• Music and Dance
• Art
• Physical Education
• Social Studies
• Spanish in Grades 6-8
• Computer Studies and Technology in Grade1-8
Weekly mass attendance, along with classroom
and school-wide prayer services, continue to be an
important part of the school’s culture. To nurture
the whole student, co-curricular programs are
available for student participation, including
Student Government, a Sports Program, and
Liturgical Ministries.
FUTURE
With a continued focus on preparing students for
the world-at-large, Our Lady of Perpetual Help
School and Preschool continues to acquire and
teach students on the latest technology available.
In 2015, the school was awarded the Anderson
Children’s Foundation Grant for $10,000; the
CBS Local 2 and H.N. & Frances C. Berger
Foundation’s Coachella Valley Spotlight Award for
$25,000; and the Caritas Telecommunications
Grant for $20,000. All three awards helped outfit
junior high school students with Chromebooks
and upgrade the computer lab and administration’s
computer equipment.
The expansion of the preschool includes a brand
new facility that matches the caliber of the K-8
school. The construction of a new Multi-Purpose
Hall means that the campus will be outfitted with
indoor sports facilities, a stage, and a full
commercial kitchen.
Throughout its history to present day, Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Catholic School and Preschool
continues as a non-profit, privately funded school
that is a vital link to many people living in the
Coachella Valley. Support through the giving of time,
talent, and treasure from families, friends,
parishioners, alumni, and local businesses have
helped the Indio school thrive.
With a commitment towards ongoing advancement,
the school invites you to join us as our journey
continues.
