2014 Speakers
To Offer a Variety of Can’t-Miss Topics
As part of our mission to offer members valuable
business-building opportunities, the Monroeville
Area Chamber has lined up a series of speakers
designed to do just that. The year kicked-off with
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald
offering his “State of the County” address
in January. From there, the remainder of the
first half of 2014 promises to provide a number
of great local leaders who will address topics
from management to Pittsburgh sports.
This month, Chris Allison, former CEO of
Tollgrade Communications and author of
“You’ll Manage: Lessons Learned from a
Former CEO” will speak about what he
learned as the leader of one of Pittsburgh’s
most successful communications corporations,
Tollgrade.

President’s Message: 2014 Full of “Can’t-Miss” Events
One of the key components of
the Chamber’s
mission
statement
is the phrase, “to
advance and
promote
business
excellence.” We strive to build that
principle in to every program that
we present to our members. (OK,
we will exclude our Business After
Hours from this discussion for the
moment. The Chamber can’t be all
work and no play.) As we embark
on the new year, I wanted you to
be able to plan around some of the
programs and events that we have in
the pipeline for this year.
Our member meals this year feature
some of the region’s corporate
leaders who will talk to us about
building excellent organizations.
Chris Allison, the former CEO of
Tollgrade Communications, will
speak to us this month. In March,
Stan Savran is scheduled to
address the Chamber for the 25th
consecutive year. In April the CEO
of WQED, Deb Acklin, will join us.
May brings our B2B Expo, which we
are redesigning to include a
luncheon keynote speaker, will
feature John Friel, who was the the
CEO of MEDRAD, a company that
won two Malcolm Baldridge Quality
Awards. And in June Dennis
Yablonsky, who leads the Allegheny
Conference on Community
Development, will address the
membership about the region’s
economic trends. That is a strong
first half lineup, and the second half
of the year promises to be just as
strong. I hope that you consider
these speakers to be “can’t miss”
events. We are bringing regional
leaders to Monroeville, so they can
talk from experience about business
strategy and building excellence.
By contrast, our Power Tools
workshops are designed to give you
the tactical advice you need to face
the day-to-day challenges of running
your business. We have surveyed
you as to what some of those
challenges are, and you have come
back with topics like: finding and
keeping good employees; leveraging
social media; striking the right worklife balance; and incorporating
wellness in the workplace. You have
told us that these are among the
tools you need to advance and
promote business excellence.
This is what you can expect from
your Chamber in the coming year:
Business leaders to give you insights
into their strategic thinking,
combined with practical, on-theground tools to help you implement
your chosen strategy. And we have
not forgotten the events that help
knit this community together –
Ribbon Cuttings, Business After
Hours, Celebrate Monroeville, and
Women in Leadership, in addition to
some new events in the pipeline.
It’s going to be a big year. I hope to
see you at many of these events.

Operation Thank You Volunteers Needed
Operation Thank You is a yearly program that helps members connect
through hand-delivering the annual Membership Directory. This year,
Operation Thank You will kick-off in early February with a small army of
volunteers who will brave the winter weather to bring the 2014 MACC
Directory to you.
Once again, we are asking for volunteers to help with this project. On
designated days, volunteers will select which businesses they want to visit
and will have about two weeks to complete their deliveries. This allows
members to get to know other members, as well as thank them for
supporting the Monroeville Area Chamber and the community.
Operation Thank You not only is an effective and efficient way to
distribute the directory; it also provides an opportunity to network and
learn about other businesses. If you are able and willing to volunteer and
help us with this special project, please call the MACC office at
412-856-0622 or e-mail Kelly Fennessy at
kfennessy@monroevillechamber.com.
Thank you!

Congratulations to Joe Bello and The Wooden
Nickel, winners of the best preview dish for this
year’s Pittsburgh Restaurant Week. The winning
dish featured jumbo seared shrimp with crab and
Tahitian vanilla bean sauce. Joe’s vanilla bean sauce
was inspired by his 2010 honeymoon, which
included a layover in Tahiti, where all of The
Wooden Nickel’s vanilla beans are grown. Joe
created the sauce after promising he would
incorporate vanilla beans into a dish for his wife
Natalie.
Kudos to Monster Mini Golf of Monroeville,
who earned franchise-wide recognition for most
creative special event with their New Years Eve
pumpkin drop. Instead of waiting for a midnight
countdown, Monster Mini Golf offered
countdowns earlier in the evening, catering to
those with small children, families that spent that
wanted a pre-midnight event and those who could
not stay up until midnight.

Deb Acklin, president and CEO of WQED Multimedia, will discuss her role at the nation’s first community-owned public media company, also known worldwide as “Mister
Rogers station.” Deb has served in multiple executive roles in public broadcasting, the cable television industry, and commercial broadcasting. At WQED Multimedia, she
manages or has managed the operations, strategies, and fundraising to create original multi-platform content distributed across three television channels, three radio signals, an interactive Web-based learning channel, an interactive global media distribution portal, an education department, a publishing division, and PBS, NPR and their member stations.
In May, as part of a reimaged B2B Expo that will include a
luncheon kick-off, the Chamber will welcome John Friel,
former CEO of MEDRAD. John had been a leading architect
and prime mover of MEDRAD’s worldwide strategies for two decades, with particular
emphasis on sales and marketing, international expansion, and research and
development. MEDRAD is the winner of two Malcolm Baldridge Quality Awards.
Before joining MEDRAD, he was an independent consultant for the
International Trade Commission and the American International Group, and Senior
Accountant with Deloitte Touche (formerly Touche Ross & Company) in Pittsburgh.
John has been a Director of Neuro Kinetics, Inc. since December 13, 2012. He serves on the board of directors of
APQC Consulting Group, Inc., Lifecor, Inc., Pittsburgh, the United Way of Allegheny County, the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and the American Productivity
& Quality Center.
June will bring Dennis Yablonsky, CEO of the Allegheny Conference on Community
Development and its affiliated organizations – the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of
Commerce, the Pennsylvania Economy League of Greater Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance.
A native of the Pittsburgh region, Dennis is an accomplished and experienced veteran of managing and leading dynamic business growth – as a private business leader, a nonprofit economic development professional and a high-ranking appointed government official.
He has grown companies from the ground up to a greater profitability and success both in the private sector and as the founding CEO of the Pittsburgh Digital Greenhouse and the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, revolutionary models for the focused
growth of technology companies. During his service as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community
and Economic Development (DCED), he brought together both an economic stimulus program and the policies
needed to support business growth, expansion and location and to build economic vitality in communities across the
Commonwealth.
Please plan to join us for these great speakers – watch future issues of the MACConnections newsletter, Monday
Morning emails and the MACC website for registration information.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald Offers Annual Address
In keeping with Monroeville Area Chamber tradition,
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald kicked off
the 2014 events calendar with his annual “State of the
County” address. During the breakfast, hosted and
sponsored by Forbes Hospital, Rich discussed a variety
of topics dealing with Allegheny County overall, as well
as issues pertaining specifically to the eastern suburbs.
MACC Board of Directors Chairman Gary Nowading, YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh,
Reese Jackson, Forbes Hospital, Dr. Mark Rubino, Forbes Hospital, Allegheny County
Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Kathleen McKenzie, Allegheny Health Network, and Dan
Onorato, Highmark, pause for a photo following the breakfast at Forbes Hospital.
Some of these topics included the state transportation
bill, improvements to the region’s parks, including
Monroeville’s Boyce Park, creating a synergy between
city and county governments, and the abundance of
opportunity for young professionals throughout the
area, in areas from education to technology to medicine.
“It really is all of us working together,” Rich said of the
future for Allegheny County as whole. “We’re all in this
together.”
