INTEGRATING ENERGY STORAGE
WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY
Power generators like power plants
and wind farms make energy which
is then passed to the national grid
or power network.
The grid transmits this through
pylons before it reaches an
electricity company, who divert
power into buildings. If there is a
surge in demand for electricity this
has to be found by the national
grid.
Demand for electricity is increasing;
globally consumption of electricity
is expected to grow by over 60% by
2030.
Powerstar Virtue allows companies
to save and store electricity locally
and switch to this stored supply at
any time.
On-site renewables can be
integrated with the Powerstar Virtue
solution to provide the maximum
cost benefit from renewable
generation, this includes:
• Eliminating the need for inverters
on renewables
• Reducing the cost of initial
renewable installation
Consequently, by combining the
unique design of Powerstar and
renewable energy generation on a
site, renewables can be made reliable
and maximum cost benefits achieved.
Powerstar Virtue is not limited to
providing savings on sites with
renewable installations, it is also
capable of making significant cost
savings for any commercial or
industrial site which has a Powerstar
installation.
• Increasing return on investment
levels of renewable installations
• Storing energy generated by onsite renewable technologies
UNIQUE VOLTAGE OPTIMISATION
TECHNOLOGY
Powerstar is the only voltage
70%-80%
optimisation technology in the world
with a patent on its design.
The Powerstar system matches the
incoming electrical supply to the
needs of the on-site equipment and
returns any excess energy back to the
grid. It achieves this by generating real
negative power which flows towards
the grid and is subtracted from the
incoming power.
of the total savings from Powerstar
come from the real negative power
feedback
20%-30%
come from the improvement of
equipment efficiencies
A report from the University of Warwick concluded:
“Powerstar Voltage Optimisation can lead to energy savings.
The overall power consumption is reduced because the negative
power is induced as feedback power to the source. Virtually, this
power can be considered as power “generated” from the load side.”
Professor Jihong Wang
THE UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK
Powerstar Virtue harnesses the induced negative power generated by the
Powerstar voltage optimisation technology to charge a storage medium and
integrates it with renewable generation (if available).
This ensures that users will always have optimal power during times of need
because the induced negative power generated by the Powerstar voltage
optimisation technology is based on the load of a building. This load is easy
to predict; induced negative power is usually 10% of the total load, therefore
the current available for charging remains consistent.
MAKING RENEWABLE ENERGY RELIABLE
REDUCE
Energy grids around the world are struggling to cope with the surge in
demand for electricity.
Reduce electricity consumption
through electronically
regulated voltage optimisation
technology from Powerstar
The increase in demand requires more cabling and pylons to support usage, a
cost which is ultimately passed onto electricity users bills.
STORE
Powerstar Virtue is a solution to address these problems, allowing energy
generated during periods of low demand to be stored locally and used when
required.
Harness induced negative
power feedback to store
electricity locally
SAVE
Switch to stored power at any
time to significantly reduce
electricity costs.
This, coupled with the volatile nature of renewable generation sources –
solar and wind for example generate little amounts of power if the sun
doesn’t shine or wind doesn’t blow – highlights the need for flexibility and
greater control of electricity usage.
By utilising the stored energy to disconnect from the grid companies can
make renewable energy reliable as the batteries used will always have
a certain amount of energy stored (above 40%) so that when supply
from the grid is interrupted unexpectedly, the building can still be fully
supported.
Powerstar Virtue allows the users to become a virtual power station, reliably
forecasting how much power will be available at all times. Therefore informed
decisions can be made on when stored energy should be used which will
allow companies to reduce electricity costs by significant amounts.

LOAD
The red dotted line represents
grid power supplied at 230V. The
supplied electricity flows into the
Powerstar transformer and is
optimised before reaching the
load.
The load controller will dictate
the amount of power required by
the facility. The green dotted line
represents the induced negative
power that is siphoned into the
master controller, which regulates
the incoming current.
The master controller contains an
inverter/charge
controller that controls the output
of power to the storage medium, and communicates with the
Powerstar MAX system to not only
charge the batteries
efficiently, but any excess current
not accepted during charging
will be diverted back to the grid,
enabling reduced but continual
VO savings during operation.
Renewable generation shown by
the yellow dotted line, will be
directed to the same master
controller that will optimise the
voltage to either power the store
directly or convert it to DC voltage
in order charge the batteries. The
incoming renewable power will be
assessed by the controller, which
will predict the amount of induced
negative power needed to provide
the optimal available energy for
any facility requirements.
The master controller can be manually set to discharge the storage
medium and disconnect the grid
supply at a pre-determined time, in
such a way as to have no effect on
the load.
The master controller will
communicate directly with the
National Grid and to respond to
any demands, this will ensure
maximum cost benefit from DNO
incentivised schemes.
The stored energy (black dotted
lines) will flow back into the master
controller to be converted to AC, as
well as smoothed out to provide a
stable flow of power to the Powerstar VO system.
Any further issues with the wave
form will be resolved by the Powerstar VO system, before the load is
supplied with power.

Typical load profile (green-yellow-red) of a store fitted with 200
kW solar panels on a particularly sunny summers day. The direct
effect of solar on the load profile is quite substantial, reducing
the stores overall consumption of electricity by 32.6%. However,
the majority of this load reduction occurs during non - peak
hours, with solar only reducing the load requirement of the
store during peak tariff times by 18%.
The graph above shows Powerstar Virtue utilising both negative
power and solar power in such a way as to prevent the store
ever demanding more than 100kWh per half hour of energy
from the grid, as well as removing the site completely from grid
power during peak Tariff.
HHD profile of a commercial store load without on-site renewable generation
BEFORE POWERSTAR VIRTUE
A typical load profile for a commercial store with no on site
renewables. The green line indicates low tariff periods, the
yellow line indicates medial tariff periods, and the red region
indicating the high peak tariff periods. The dark shaded column
illustrates the region that the facility needs to avoid incurring
highest costs and inconsistent supply.
AFTER POWERSTAR VIRTUE
The same profile with Powerstar Virtue. The high peak tariff
period has been completely avoided by powering the site
entirely from the Virtue storage medium. The rest of the
load profile has remained unaltered, because the storage
medium was charged using the induced negative power,
not power from the grid. Therefore not only is the consumer
saving money, but they are also directly reducing kWh
usage, both for themselves and the grid.
