Reynolds was a renowned art historian who lived near Bury St Edmunds until his recent death. Educated at Queen’s College, Cambridge, he joined the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1937 and was promoted to Keeper of Paintings (1959-74) and of the Department of Prints and Drawings (1961-74). On the outbreak of WWII, V&A staff (as civil servants) became part of ‘the Treasury pool’ and Reynolds was allocated to the London Civil Defence Region, with a key role to play in air attacks and in case of invasion. It was during this period that he met his future wife Daphne Dent. Reynolds was very aware of current artistic trends and began collecting contemporary art in the late 1930s. In the late 1960s Reynolds, now keeper of his department at the V&A, set a precedent by staging exhibitions of living artists, first Stanley William Hayter and then Anthony Gross. Gross became a great friend and later helped Daphne Reynolds to develop mezzotints, which she went on to exhibit in Paris and London. Reynolds was the Honorary Keeper of Portrait Miniatures at the Fitzwilliam Museum since 1994, and in his capacity as portrait miniature expert, Reynolds verified the Samuel Cooper which this auction house sold for £23,000 last year. His publications include English Portrait Miniatures (1952), Catalogue of the Constable Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum (1960), Victorian Painting (1966, second edition 1987). 180 Anthony Gross (1905-1984) Yellow Hillside II, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left ‘58, with exhibition labels and further gallery label verso for The Ernest Brown & Phillips Leicester Galleries in Leicester Square, 55 x 44cm £1500 - 2500 180 L AC Y S C OT T & KNI G H T 27 184 181 181 Anthony Gross (1905-1984) - Threshing, trial print etching, signed and inscribed to Graham Reynolds in pencil to the margin, 46 x 53cm £200 - 300 184 Anthony Gross (1905-1984) - La Route de Saint Zurade, etching, signed, titled and with dedicated inscription ‘To Graham and Daphne with love, Anthony Gross’ in pencil to the margin, 20 x 28cm £150 - 200 185 182 185 Vera Cunningham (1897-1955) - Pair; Still life with fish, oil on canvas, 68 x 50cm and 50 x 68cm, one with James Bourlet gallery label verso £100 - 150 182 Anthony Gross (1905-1984) - Burning bush, etching, signed and inscribed ‘To Daphne Reynolds with love’ in pencil to the margin, further titled and numbered 6/50, 38 x 50cm £200 - 300 183 183 Anthony Gross (1905-1984) - Drapers shop, etching, signed, titled and numbered in pencil to the margin 14/40, 19.5 x 28.5cm; and one other by the artist entitled Grezels, with further inscription ‘To Daphne and Graham Reynolds with all best wishes for Xmas and 1964’, 8.5 x 14cm (2) £150 - 200 28 L AC Y S C OT T & KN I GHT 186 186 Vera Cunningham (1897-1955) - Autumn flowers still life, oil on canvas, inscribed to label verso, 56 x 53cm £50 - 80 187 190 187 Vera Cunningham (1897-1955) - Head of girl with ivory, oil on canvas, 60 x 49cm; and one other by the artist Portrait of Tony Butts, oil on artist board, 41 x 33cm (with significant losses) (2) £80 - 120 190 Frederick Gore RA (1913-2009) - Still life on a balcony with landscape beyond, pencil and watercolour on paper, signed F.Gore 1988, inscribed ‘To Daphne with much love from ... ?’, 45 x 47cm £120 - 180 188 188 Vera Cunningham (1897-1955) - Female portrait, watercolour with crayon, 42 x 31cm; and attributed to Vera Cunningham - Skeletal portrait, oil on canvas, 39 x 49cm (2) £ 60 - 90 189 191 189 Valerie Thornton (1931-1991) - Green bottles, etching with aquatint printed in colours, signed, titled and numbered 66/70 in pencil to the margin, 12 x 20cm £30 - 50 191 Anthony Atkinson ARCA (b.1929) - Villa at Le Barroux, gouache, signed in pencil lower right, 27 x 18cm £20 - 40 L AC Y S C OT T & KNI G H T 29 192 192 Belinda King (Contemporary) - Rams, artists proof etching with colours, signed and titled in pencil to the margin, 9 x 18cm; and Michael Rothenstein RA ARA (1908-1993) The Cockhen, artists proof lithograph, 10 x 7.5cm (2) £60 - 80 195 195 Hervey Adams (1903-1996) - Abstract, watercolour study on paper, signed in pencil lower right, 34 x 49cm; Joyce Batty (1919-2005) - Ionian I, oil and pencil on paper, monogrammed and dated ‘65 lower right, 52 x 35cm (2) £60 - 80 196 193 193 Miranda J Mott (Contemporary) - Space and Time, artists proof lithograph, 23 x 30cm; and one other by the artist - Broken Bowl in a Tangled Thread, artists proof lithograph, 7.5 x 10cm (2) £30 - 50 196 Lucinda Douglas-Menzies (b.1956) - (Arthur) Graham Reynolds; Daphne Reynolds (nee Dent), interior portrait, bromide fibre print, signed and numbered in pencil to the margin 1/12, dated March 1990, 32 x 32cm.
