The Louis Davidscarré is situated in the heart of
Zandvoort and links the town centre with the housing
areas. It’s a place where several community-based
functions gather, like the Brede School, housing,
recreation and the weekly market on Wednesday.
It’s a place were the inhabitants of Zandvoort feel at
home, a gathering in the living room of Zandvoort
(huiskamer van Zandvoort). This is the theme for our
design. For the people of Zandvoort we want to create
a surrounding that adds something special to the
already existing spectrum of spheres of this seaside
resort.

The Huiskamer van Zandvoort has to connect perfectly
with the surrounding spatial urban design structure.
For our design we have used some special spatial
characteristics from this surrounding. Like the lengthy
linking roads that lead to the town center that are
distinctive for the entry of this seaside resort. These
visual lines have to be designed with care. Therefore
we suggest refitting them to high quality avenues.
The image of the public space of the town center is
defined by an alternation of small streets and hidden
squares. For a large part these are situated on (formal)
dunes. Because of the relief this is still visible. In our
design we make clever use of this feature. The higher
situated central square, the Huiskamer van Zandvoort,
is for instance disclosed in a ‘natural’ way by lengthy
slopes.
The urban design structure of the town centre is
furthermore characterized by clustered buildings.
These clusters vary a lot from size. Housing blocks
are often linked to large solitary buildings. In this way
hidden spaces are generated. These make the spatial
structure of the area interesting and can be used
for various purposes. In our design we have special
attention for these ‘surprises’.

At this moment the identity of Zandvoort is not visible
right away. But, it’s there. It is shown in the diversity
of buildings, the ‘Zandvoortse’ style, the light color
range that refers to the sea and beach, the small scale
of most dwellings. With the development of the Louis
Davidscarré we want to preserve this identity. We even
want to make it stronger. The most important bonding
element of this design is it’s color range and the
materialization. The color palet of the sea with sand,
water and air. This color range belongs to the original
architecture of Zandvoort, characterized by small
white dwellings, the veranda-architecture with white
woodwork and light colored facades.

The Ahoed building has because of its functional and
spatial characteristics a very distinguished position
in our design. It provides accommodation for a
healthcare centre and for dwellings. We have situated
the healthcare centre on the ground- en first floor.
By giving the building a roofing over, it got a more
sculptural shape. At the same time it creates extra
space for the dwellings. The double high entrancehall of the building makes the distinction between the
public program and the housing program at the upper
floor very clear.
The charisma of the building corresponds with the
beautiful woodwork architecture of the west side of the
building block. In this way the building becomes visible
as an important building in the neighborhood and has
at the same time an architectural style connection with
it surroundings.

The EMM location exists off an apartment block at
the Zwarte Veld, dwellings at the Prinsesseweg and
dwellings at the Koningstraat. The apartment building
is situated at a big open square. In the urban design
plan the building and square are seen as an important
orientation point for the area. In architecture it
connects with the Ahoed building.
The buildings at the south side of the Prinsesseweg
refer to the contemporary veranda-architecture and at
the same time to the well-known representation of the
small Dutch beach houses. By creating a lot of exterior
space, the Prinsesseweg gets a very vivid image.
At the Koningsweg the design plan connects
directly with the characteristics of the small villages
in the area. In our design we emphasize these
characteristics. We suggest an architecture that refers
to the original white houses of Zandvoort. The stepped
façades, the red playful rooftops and even the black
plinth refer to these original houses.
Parking between the Koningsweg and Prinsesseweg
is qualitative solved by creating parking space with a
deck on ground level in the ‘belly’ of the building block.

At this location we have merged to building blocks
to one. By doing so the hierarchy of the public space
becomes clearer. The walkway stayed but is introduced
now by an entrance port and it goes trough the patio.
In this way the patio becomes a hidden surprise for
the area.
At street side, the buildings scale and materialization
visual connects the small village-like image with
the scale of the new Carré. The building block has a
big dimension but because of variation in height and
typology it gives a small sized impression. At this
side the materialization is also a bit darker. Through
this the buildings façade works as guidance to the
Huiskamer van Zandvoort.
At the side of the Carré itself there will be first- and
second-floor apartments. Multiple front doors and
variations in exterior space contribute to vividness.
This generates an active, intimate public square
without anonymous spaces.
