Real-life Heroes at Summer Fair Fun at the Bouncy Castle Radio Trent FM ‘Thunder Crew’ Welcome to St. Andrew’s Primary & Nursery School. You may already be aware that every family with a child attending St. Andrew’s School and Nursery is a member of the Home & School Partnership. The Home & School Partnership is the name for the PTA for our school. The committee members of the H&SP meet on average one or two times during each term. Meetings are usually held on a Monday evening at 6pm in the Staff Room. Although some of the most recent meetings have been held outside school in more casual and relaxing atmosphere and on a different night. The H&SP consists of a group of both dedicated staff and parent members, with the aim of fund raising for the little extras our children benefit from during their time at school. We arrange various fund raising events throughout the academic year, our main attraction being the annual Summer Fete. The one of summer 2008 raised £1400, which was fantastic considering the weather on the day!! The HEROES Summer Fair of 2009 proved even more successful. For this we managed to arrange the attendance of a Fire Crew and engine, the Thunders from Radio Trent FM and a fantastic martial arts display by Zara Phythian’s Personal Best Academy. In 2009 events have included the Easter Discos that were held for Years 3&4 and 5&6. Easter celebrations for the children in KS1 took place in the form of an afternoon of activities and games, including an egg hunt, colouring and bonnet making, and cake and biscuit decorating. All had immense fun and we hope to do this again next Easter for the children. Christmas time sees our Christmas fair with great raffle prizes, Santa’s Grotto and festive stalls. Other events may be added to this at a later date. We have our own notice board situated in the Junior Yard near the Den. So keep looking at this regularly for updates on what is happening, or competitions we are running etc. This is where you will find the main information, although other notices are put up within the grounds on other notice boards etc. Information can also be found on the school website. The AGM (Annual General Meeting) is held in April each year, during which the election of committee members for the following year takes place. Members of the Committee for 2009/10 are listed below: President Chairperson Vice-Chair Secretary Treasurer Staff Representative Staff Members Governor Member Parent Members Karen Brookes Margaret Reid (Parent) Nicola Hoyland (Parent) Jill Townsend (Parent) Samantha Smith (Parent) Christine Turner (Staff) Hilary Jones, Diane Willows, Helen Halfpenny Kirsty Savage Julia Bailey, Lindsay Houlden, John Townsend, Melanie Mallinson, Joanne Corbett, Alison Webb In the past year alone the H&SP have given cash to the school for a number of things on the school Wish List. The Summer Fete in July some of you took up the challenge and came along to help in our hour of need, and had a great time in doing so. The response to donations of cakes and biscuits for the cake stall was truly phenomenal and raised £178 alone. MOUTHWATERING to the last crumb!!! Here are some comments from a few of the parents who came along to help: I was asked to help out at the Summer Fair. As both my children attended St. Andrew’s it was nice to feel involved. We all had a great day, with a good selection of entertainment, lots to do and plenty to eat. I hope next year will be just as much fun with the hope of making more money for the school. Stevie Stones. (Parent) I really enjoyed taking part in helping with the Summer Fair. It gave me chance to meet lots of new parents and at the same time raise funds for school. All of the people at St. Andrew’s were really friendly, welcoming and made my experience really enjoyable. I will definitely be helping again next year. Joanne Johnson. (Parent) Helping out at the Summer Fair this year made me feel like I was making a positive contribution to raising funds for St. Andrew’s. After all, it’s our children that benefit re long term and year after year I see where those funds aare spent, all for just a few hours of my time. It was fun. I met and socialized with parents that I had only ever said ‘hello’ to before, and, now we chat frequently in the playground. It made me realize just how much effort the staff and other parents put into raising funds for our children – all in their own time! I was really glad I made the effort and will offer my services whenever needed again without hesitation. A great day was had by all. Annette Millar. (Parent) Home and School Partnership meetings are a good place for putting your ideas across about ways in which you think funds can be raised to support your children’s school. Helping at the summer fair was huge fun and helped raise lots for the school. Lindsay Houlden. (Parent) and from our Chairperson and two of our newest members following attending their first meeting: I found going to my first Home & School Partnership meeting quite daunting, but I needn’t have worried. Everyone was so friendly, and I was made to feel very welcome. It was lovely to chat to other parents and staff in a relaxed and informal way. Hello my name is Sharon and my Margaret Reid son has just started ‘big school’ at Chairperson Hi I’m Darren, I recently attended my first Home & School Partnership meeting and was pleasantly surprised how friendly and informal it was. Everyone made me feel very welcome but just as important everyone’s point of view was listened to and discussed. Come along and see for yourself!!! Mouth-watering Cakes Competition Winner 2009 St. Andrew’s. I decided to go along to a Home & School Partnership meeting to find out what it was all about. I felt quite nervous as I expected to walk into a busy meeting and unsure about what I may have to contribute. What I actually found was a small, friendly group of teachers and parents who made me feel welcome and listened to anything I had to say. Being at the meeting really opened my eyes to the importance of the Home & School Partnership because I wasn’t aware of the impact that fundraising has on the school. I was shocked at how few parents were at the meeting and that it is a struggle to find volunteers for events that so many of us attend and enjoy. It made me aware that these events don’t just happen and need the input of us parents to help run them and make them a success. I would encourage anyone to come along to the next meeting either to find out more for yourself or see how you may be able to help. The autumn of 2008 the H&SP was 15 years old. In that time many thousands of pounds has been raised for the school. Thus providing much needed and enjoyed extras for the pupils, making school life a time they have enjoyed and will remember for the rest of their lives. Our aim is to continue to help the school in every way we can and we strive to do this against the odds. We know this could to be particularly difficult for a while with the economic climate as it is, but we are still here and working hard for the school, our children and you – its families. Another way in which you can raise funds for the school, at no extra cost to yourself, is by using EASY FUNDRAISING, which can be found on the school website, when doing your shopping or renewing your car insurance etc. By using this link the companies make a donation to the school. This is totally separate to the H&SP, having been set up by Mr Wakeland. Some people have joined the cause and use the link when doing their shopping. Why not search the web and have a look what is to offer and give it a go.
