the finale concludes at noon with a

being kept a secret until the big reveal.
Dress is casual; please wear running
shoes if planning to walk/run the 5K

Eric’s Run Raises Funds and Distracted Driving Awareness
Saturday, April 21 marked the first annual
Eric’s Run, a 5K/10K Run/Walk held at
Orcutt Community Park to benefit the
Eric Okerblom Foundation. Runners and

walkers from thoughout the community
came to support a good cause. “The
primary use of the proceeds from Eric’s
Run will go toward distracted driving
awareness,” explains Eilene Okerblom.
“Luis Escobar [of Santa Maria Valley Open
Space] has been helping out,” says Eilene,
“And I think it’s a nice combination using
the open space for the run.” Supervisor
Peter Adam started the race, which was
followed by some Santa Maria Style BBQ
and a t-shirt for each participant. “It’s
a pretty location,” she says of the park,
“It’s a good opportunity to do something
healthy and community oriented and it’s
for a good cause. It’s also a great way to
remember Eric.”
The Eric Okerblom Foundation, named
in honor of local teen Eric Okerblom
who was killed by a distracted driver in
2009, has made it its mission to combat
distracted driving through education,
legislation, and enforcement, to promote
health care access to uninsured workers,
and to provide tools to the disadvantaged.
The Foundation offers distracted driving
facts, public service announcements,
distracted driving presentations, and is
involved in a letter writing campaign to
increase the penalty for driver cell phone
use.

Foundation are appreciated. To find out

Orcutt Schools Update
OJHS Earns “Distinguished” Honor
Bob Bush, Superintendent
Orcutt Union School District
Spring is a busy time in our school
district, and I have several notes to share:
To begin, hearty kudos to Orcutt Junior
High School on its recent selection as a
2013 California Distinguished School.
Schools that receive this honor must
meet the state’s criteria for student
achievement, submit an application,
and pass muster on a site visit. This
is a noteworthy and prestigious
accomplishment – only two schools in
Santa Barbara County were recognized.
…
“(California Distinguished School
recognition) is a huge congratulation
to the staff, the students, and the
community of Orcutt Junior High
School,” says Principal Susan Salucci.
“It’s a validation of the work that is done
here every day. We are all very excited
about this.” …
Congratulations also are due Lakeview
Junior High School instructional
assistant Christie Hurd, who was
selected for a Crystal Apple Award.
The award is given annually to Santa
Barbara County educators who make
a significant difference with students.
Hurd, a longtime member of our Special
Education team, was nominated by peers
at Lakeview. She is most deserving! …
Meanwhile, enrollment for the 20132014 school year is under way at our
five elementary schools, our two junior
high schools, and our K-8 school (Olga
Reed) in Los Alamos. Most of the
new enrollment is for Transitional
Kindergarten and kindergarten, but we
are enrolling new students in all other
grades as well. To enroll, please go to
your neighborhood school or the district
Enrollment Office. For information on
enrollment, please phone Susan Prow at
938-8946. …
Also enrolling students for 2013-2014
is the Orcutt Academy’s Independent
Study Program. The program offers
both home study and blended options
for grades K-8. For information, please
phone Joe Dana at 938-8934. …
Summer Swim Lessons
On March 27, all of our district’s
elementary and K-8 schools participated
in a Battle of the Books team competition
for students in grades 4-6. For this
event, students must read at least 14
books from a list of 28 and be prepared
to answer questions about the books.
Over the years, our school librarians have
organized the event to motivate young
readers. …
This year’s victor in Battle of the Books
was Joe Nightingale School. “The kids
did a great job, and I’m really proud of
them,” says school librarian and team
coach Cara Lane. “We started practicing
in January once a week at lunchtime.
We had 11 kids on the team, and two of
them were able to read all 28 books.” …
Eighth graders at Lakeview and Orcutt
junior high schools are looking forward
to their Community Interviews, in
which each student is interviewed by
a community member about what the
student has learned in junior high school
and the student’s plans for the future.

Royal Family Kids Showers Love & Attention on Foster Kids
A mentorship program for foster
children is changing lives here in Orcutt.
The volunteer organization, Royal
Family KIDS, started nearly thirty years
ago in Orange County and recently
extended its ministry to the Central
Coast. Through a unique partnership
between social services and the Harbor
Church, volunteers are banning together
to provide foster children, ages 6-12, with
mentors.
Volunteer mentors bring foster children
together once a month in a “youth group”
styled environment where kids can
build a sense of family—in some cases
kids even spend quality time with their
brothers and sisters who have been placed
in different homes. Club Director Jan
Holford shared, “The
kids know they aren’t
like the other kids in
their schools, so they
find their community
and camaraderie here.”
Many of the mentors
partner up to take their
kids on group field
trips once a month to
different areas here
on the coast. The kids
also enjoy at least four
hours of one-on-one time with their
mentors who support the kids through
the many challenging transitions they
experience.
Camp Director Diane Rae noted, “Some
kids can be moved around four or five
times in just a matter of months. In our
program, kids see an adult who really
does care about them.” Holford added,
“We say, ‘I love you and I am going to
stick by you. I am not going to bail on
you.’ And we follow through.” All of the
mentors make a five year commitment,
ensuring that the kids see follow-through
and can build that special relationship.
In addition to the monthly club, the
kids enrolled in the program are invited
to participate in a spectacular week-long and asked if I could be his stepdad.” Eric
