We have invited the whole community to help build
the very first Sydenham Community poem. All we
asked was for anything connected with Sydenham:
personal, public, good, challenging.
Join us at Queensthorpe Square to hear the
poem for the first time being read aloud by its
contributors and some of our local poets.

AND MONA ARSHI
Hear these two Forward Prize
winning poets
Kei Miller won the 2014 Forward Prize for his work
"The Cartographer Tries to Map a Way to Zion" which Hilary Mantel chose as one of her favourite
books of 2014. He "speaks and sings with rare
confidence and authority" (Lorna Goodison). Mona
Arshi has created a storm of appreciation with her
debut "Small Hands", winning the Forward Prize
for best first collection last year. A tender book
about the interplay of culture and the loss of a
family member.

COMEDY CABARET
He’s handsome, debonair and incredible. He’s
also a bit of an idiot. Jody fuses props and physical
comedy in this riotously enchanting show,
weaving stories from everyday household items.
Think David Copperfield meets Ben Stiller. Expect
serious facial expressions and 80's montage
music.
Hosted by Jody Kamali as the shambolic circus
entertainer ‘Fernando’, featuring emerging, daring
and exciting comedy performers from the London
circuit. Expect the unexpected. Lineup: The
Mayor Of Kentish Town aka Steve Furst (pictured),
oddball Clown Cheekykita and character
comedian and impressionist Katia Kvinge.

THE GREAT WAR CLASSROOM
Experience what it would have been like to be a member of a school class
during a typical lesson in 1916
Presented by Sydenham Arts
As the UK commemorates the centenary of
the First World War, thanks to support by the
Heritage Lottery Fund, Sydenham Arts have been
researching one aspect of WW1 heritage which
has received relatively little attention: its effect
on the education experiences of teachers and
school children of the time.
Pulling together our research into the factual
histories of real teachers and school children
in South-East London, we invite you to an
immersive classroom experience with Dr. Charles
Maddock Stuart, a former headmaster of local
school St. Dunstan’s College.
As a “pupil” your formal lesson will be
approximately half an hour, followed by thirty
minutes of facilitated discussion in which
attendees may ask questions or offer their
thoughts on the classroom experience itself
and reflections on the Great War in general,
particularly how it impacted on children of school
age and their families.

SEE3 UPGRADING THE HIGH STREET
Get involved in the legacy of Portas Pilot funding
ALISON ROMANCZUK
Set up in 2012 to create a
vibrant high street in the
three neighbouring areas of
Sydenham, Forest Hill and
Kirkdale. Each high street
successfully attracted new
businesses, helping to ensure
longterm stability for SE23 &
SE26. The legacy for Sydenham
is a monthly market complete
with entertainment and the
development of the Sydenham
Hub. For Forest Hill there
is a project to enhance the
area around the library and
Louise House home to arts
organisation V22. Plans are
underway to develop the old
Laundry (to the rear) as a
community hub with exhibition
and events space, café and
garden. SEE3 is currently looking
for volunteers to get involved, if

DISCOVER ART
IN SYDENHAM
Now in its eighth year, the Artists
Trail is more exciting than ever
RUTY BENJAMINI: RED HUSK: VENUE 15
The Artists Trail team invite you to take a tour
of central Sydenham and the fringes of Forest
Hill to meet artists in their homes, take part in
their workshops and enjoy art in the high street.
Businesses taking part include My Front Room,
The Lovely Gallery, The Beer Rebellion, On the
Hoof Bistro, Cherry and Ice, Kente Coffee Shop,
the Sydenham Pop-up Shop, Gurkhas and
Brown & Green Café in Mayow Park.
The Artists Trail has three main “clusters” of
open houses: in Venner Road, Sydenham Road
and Tannsfeld Road; the Thorpes and Adamsrill
Road; and Hyndewood and Dacres Road. This year
there are more group exhibitions: old favourites
the Brockley Potters will be at Normanton Street
Methodist Church on the first weekend with
Adult Learning Lewisham the second weekend;
the Perry Rise art group are at Perry Rise Baptist
Church on both Saturdays; and nine artists,
including printmakers, jewellers, photographers
and woodcarvers will be showing at Dacres
Wood Nature Reserve and Field Centre on both
weekends. Don't miss the Sellotape Sculpture
and Beyond exhibition by home-educated and
schooled children - the next generation of
Sydenham Artists. n

Sydenham Hub has evolved into a
community centre with an emphasis
on creative arts and well-being. Its
windows provide the perfect space
for a pop-up gallery for Sydenham's
artists. For up-to-date information
check sydenhamartists.co.uk
Tony’s pictures are based upon
sketchbooks completed during his
travels abroad and longer stays in
France. His pictures are freely painted
and give an essence of a place or
landscape using a variety of media.
Tony exhibits regularly with works in
collections in the UK and abroad.
Sheila works on the wheel, throwing
bowls as well as coiling and slab
work. Her work is influenced by
land and seascapes and organic
shapes and surfaces. She delights in
experimenting with a combination
of glazes and seeing the effects they
have on each other.
The Artists Trail team are Bruce Harrison, Hannah Lewis, Annabel McLaren, Mercedes Oakley
and Pippa Stacey. We would like to thank all the artists, hosts and volunteers without whose hard work
the Artists Trial would not be possible. Special thanks go to our sponsors Dan and Richard Crowley
