“Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.” - Benjamin Franklin A note of Thanks to our Customers: Luigi’s considers wine to be an integral part of the dining experience. We continually strive to bring our customers the best offerings available from regions all over the world. We have selections from the United States (which include California, Oregon, Washington, and North Carolina), Australia and New Zealand, Chile and Argentina, France, Germany, and of course Italy. We will bring new offerings from other regions as well as we continue to spread our “love of wine” to our customers and friends. Thank you for choosing Luigi’s as your source for a wonderful dining experience! “Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine so that I may wet my brain and say something clever.” -Aristophanes A note about our wine list: Because of our passion for Vino, we are serious about the wines we provide you. We are also passionate about the information we convey about those wines. We have attempted to bring you as much information as possible to assist you in making your decision. We have provided notes about many of the wines from resources such as Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, and Wine Spectator Magazine, as well as many of our own tasting notes to help you select the wine you are looking for. And please, don’t be afraid to ask your server for assistance should you require it. Wine is not something to fear, but something to enjoy! We constantly strive to make sure this wine list is an accurate representation of all the offerings we keep in our cellar. However, please understand that we may have vintage rollovers and occasionally may run out of a particular item. "Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.” -Ernest Hemingway Version 2.7- 12.13 1 Table of Contents Sparkling Wines by the Glass Cava is produced using Method Champenoise, the same as houses of Champagne, France. "This shows some richness, with Jonagold apple, honey, candied citrus peel and vanilla notes. There's juicy acidity for balance, with a creamy texture and a lingering finish. Drink now.” 88 WS 261 Bisol Jeio Prosecco Brut Rosé NV, Veneto Italy 30.00 The Bisol Estate is one of the oldest in the region of Valdobbiadene area. The winery was founded in 1858 by Eliseo Bisol, who was well known for his distillery. Quality has continued to be driving force over the generations. In the last 30 years the Bisol brothers have succedeed in achieving a balance between tradition and modern technology. “The NV Prosecco Brut Rose Jeio is made from equal parts Merlot and Pinot Noir. It is a fairly restrained wine with excellent balance and a refined mousse. I am not generally a fan of rose Prosecco, a category that has been created to exploit the growing popularity of both roses and sparkling wines, yet everything here works beautifully, and this is one if the very few examples that merit attention.” 87 WA 254 Bisol Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Crede DOC NV, Veneto Italy 36.00 “A vinous sparkler with expansive flavors of kumquat, peach and nuts, this offers a rich textural depth while holding to freshness and delicacy. It finishes firm and clean, with lasting freshness that would enhance any cream based noodle soup.” 93 pts Wine and Spirits 256 Schramsberg Brut Blanc de Blancs 2010, California 55.00 Blanc de Blancs was the first wine Schramsberg produced in 1965 and was America’s first commercially produced Chardonnay-based brut sparkling wine. Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs gained international recognition in 1972 when then President Nixon served the wine at the historic “Toast to Peace” in Beijing, China. It is 100% Chardonnay. "Enticing aromas of Asian pear and spiced cinnamon lead to rich, layered flavors of lemon curd, mineral and fresh almond."91 WS 259 Champagne Philippe Prie “Brut Tradition” NV, Champagne, France 60.00 The spotlight is shining on the Aube, and its primary growing area, the Côte des Bar, whose distinctive, highly sought wines have caught the attention of Champagne lovers the world over. “A focused structure and hints of Janagold apple, apple blossom, biscuit and ginger. Lightly juicy, with a subtle texture and a touch of honey on the finish.”91 WS 255 Duval-Leroy Brut NV, Champagne, France 69.00 Since its creation, Champagne Duval-Leroy has been located in Vertus, in the heart of “La Cote des Blancs”. Currently the House cultivates about 200 hectares, much of which is devoted to production of high quality Chardonnay grapes. The predominance of Chardonnay in the elaboration of the cuvees gives a finesse, lightness and elegance to Duval-Leroy champagnes. “A big, full-bodied bubbly, featuring graphite, toast, lemon and nut aromas and flavors. Balanced, with an assertive finish. Will improve with a few months of cellaring.” 93 WS Version 2.7- 12.13 5 263 Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé NV, Champagne, France 79.00 Nicolas Feuillatte bought 12 hectares of vineyard in Champagne in 1972 and established Nicolas Feuillatte in 1976. Through the 70s and 80s the Nicolas Feuillatte brand grew, until in 1986 he made the decision to sell the to the Cave Vinicole de la Champagne cooperative, which acquired both his vineyards and his brand. It was a match made in heaven, as the brand has continued to thrive under its new ownership, mostly through innovation and high standard of quality. “A lively sparkling rosé, with a bright, citrusy overtone to fruit-forward flavors of strawberry puree and black raspberry, showing accents of biscuit, walnut skin and gumdrop. Drink now through 2016.” 91 WS 253 Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label, NV, Champagne, France 86.00 Veuve Clicquot translates to the “Widow Cliquot”. Born in 1777, Nicole Barbe Ponsardin married François Clicquot in 1798. Widowed at the age of 27, she took over her deceased husband's business. At a time when Europe was torn by war, she was shipping her wines throughout the world. The famous Yellow Label has come to be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of tradition, elegance, style in the art of living. 272 Duval-Leroy Brut Rosé NV, Champagne, France 110.00 “Offers plenty of structure and a dry profile, with light berry, cherry and gingerbread flavors. Remains harmonious and elegant through the lingering finish. Drink now through 2012. 6,000 cases made.” 91 WS 264 Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé NV, Champagne, France (750 ml) 125.00 Billecart-Salmon is a medium-sized champagne house in Mareuil-sur-Ay, France. Founded in 1818 with the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, it is one of the few to remain family owned. “A bone-dry but delicious wine, with red fruits and a beautiful onion-skin color that just hints at rosé. Lovely acidity completes the serious and highly enjoyable wine.” 92 WE 257 Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grande Année 2000, Champagne, France 245.00 “Full, creamy and soft, this is a rich Champagne, very much a food wine. It has great ripe swathes of peach and pineapple flavors, rounded by toast. While 2000 is not a vintage for aging, this opulent Champagne may be the exception. 2,500 cases imported.” 95 pts WE Italian Red Wines 375 Piccini “Memoro” Vino Rosso d’Italia (NV) 24.00 Here is a wine that defies convention in the most unique way. Created with the intention of representing “the four corners of Italy”, this wine is a blend of four different grape varietals, each a typical expression of a distinct Italian wine region: Veneto, Sicily, Puglia, and Abruzzo. Additionally, the wine is not vintage specific, allowing the wine to be a blend of youthful and aged wine: 12 month oak aged Montepulciano from Abruzzo, solera (multiple vintage) Nero d’Avola from Sicily, Merlot from the cold climate Veneto, and Primitivo from Puglia. It is a unique expression that is summed up with its Latin name, “Memoro” – to remember. Version 2.7- 12.13 6 Southern Italy- Abbruzi, Puglia, Campania, Sicilia -Abbruzzo 313 Masciarelli Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, DOCG 2008 49.00 What happens when you try to force a wild montepulciano to wear the chains of the international style? You get something like Marina Cvetic, named for the winemaker's wife, who must be one hell of a woman. The wine combines a deep garnet color, notes of black cherry and leather, wild montepulciano funk, and all lashed together with a generous helping of oak. I'm not surprised it earned three glasses in the Gambero Rosso. -Campania 349 Fattoria Galardi Roccamonfina Terra di Lavoro, DOCG 2007 185.00 “Terra di Lavoro is one of Italy’s icon reds, and the 2007 is yet another in a series of mindbending wines from the Murena, Celentano and Catello families. The 2007 Roccamonfina Terra di Lavoro announces itself with a blast of smoke, ash, red berries, flowers and minerals, all of which come together in a heady, exotic expression of Aglianico and Piedirosso, two of Campania’s thoroughbred grapes. There is incredible clarity and nuance in the glass despite the wine’s massive concentration. The 2007 is a very unusual Terra di Lavoro for its open, accessible personality and ripe, silky tannins, both of which are on full display.” 97 pts WA Central Italy- Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio -Montepulciano 335 Fattoria del Cerro Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, DOCG 2010 39.00 “The 2010 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is laced with iron, smoke, tobacco, black cherries and scorched earth. Firm tannins provide the backbone for this deeply expressive, layered Vino Nobile. Here, too, all the elements are very much in balance.”--92 Points Vinous / Antonio Galloni 310 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, DOCG 2010 47.00 “This Vino Nobile is made up primarily of Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and has a silky palate, rich cherry fruit and a full body. This is a great alternative to more expensive Brunellos.” 91 WS -Maremma 378 Fortediga Syrah Sodamagri, Maremma Toscana IGT 2006 46.00 “Interesting aromas of spices, dark berries and hints of meat follow through to a full body, with big, velvety tannins and a milk chocolate, berry and cappuccino aftertaste. Lots of toasty new wood. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2011 through 2016. 660 cases made.” 92 WS -Chianti 312 Terra Nostra “Strade D'Oro” Chianti, DOCG 2011 24.00 Terra Nostra Chianti is made in the fashion of a young Bordeaux. Unlike the Gran Crus of the Medoc or the Chianti Classico Riservas of Tuscany, these dry reds are vinified to capture the quality and essence of more austere and longer-lived counterparts, but in a classy, easy, friendly style. A careful selection of premium vinifera grapes (primarily Sangiovese) is followed by a temperature controlled fermentation and 4 months of aging in large, traditional Slavonian oak Version 2.7- 12.13 7 casks. The resulting dry reds are pleasant, vibrant and delicious, without the tannins of more costly Tuscan reds. 368 Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico, DOCG 2011 32.00 Querceto refers to the "little forest of oak" in which the winery is nestled. The François family, which settled in Tuscany in the 18th century, purchased the Castello di Querceto estate and began the production of Chianti in 1897. By 1911, the estate had already won an international enological prize. And in 1924 it was one of the 33 estates that founded the Chianti Classico Consortium. Shows very clean and fruity aromas of blackberry and flowers. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh, silky and clean finish. 323 Frescobaldi Chianti Rufina Nipozzano Riserva, DOCG 2009 37.00 From one of the most historic wine producing families in Italy, the Frescobaldis. They have over 700 years and nearly 30 generations of family dedicated to the quality of their products. This wine comes from the Nipozzano Estate in the heart of Chianti Rufina. “The 2009 Chianti Rufina Riserva Nipozzano is very pretty. Veins of minerality support an expressive core of dark red berries in this silky, long Chianti. The 2009 impresses for its persistence and fine overall balance. Ideally, the 2009 is enjoyed while the fruit retains its vibrancy. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.” 90 WA 304 Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico Riserva, DOCG 2007 39.00 A terrific wine worthy of the merit of its historic producer, this Riserva is bold and elegant at the same time. “Full-bodied and really beautiful, showing floral, currant and plum aromas, silky tannins and a fresh finish." 90 WS 339 Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale, DOCG 2009 55.00 “The single-vineyard 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is huge. Black fruit, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that burst from the glass in this extroverted wine. The Poggiale is a bit juicier and richer than the straight Riserva, but the two wines are as differentiated as they often are. Still, it is impossible not to admire the sheer balance and harmony of what is in the glass. The Poggiale is 90% Sangioveto, 5% Caniaolo and 5% Ciliegiolo, aged in French oak barrels, 10% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.” 94 WA 564 Antinori Chianti Classico Tenute Marchese Antinori Riserva, DOCG 2008 59.00 Marchese Antinori is produced exclusively from the finest, most highly selected grapes grown on the Antinori Santa Cristina, Pèppoli and Badia a Passignano estates in the Mercatale Val di Pesa zone in Chianti Classico. “My notes for the 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori from a blind tasting read “reminds me of Tignanello.” Thankfully, I was not too far off! The Riserva Marchese Antinori includes 10% international varieties in addition to the Sangiovese, which does make it the wine closest to Tignanello in the Antinori lineup. The 2008 is a big, broad shouldered wine with dark red cherries, tobacco, licorice and herbs in a medium to full-bodied style supported by vibrant tannins and mouth watering acidity. The Riserva Marchese Antinori shows terrific length and balance through to the dark, authoritative finish. Despite an international leaning, this is without question a Sangiovese-based wine.” 91 WA 440 Viticcio Chianti Classico Riserva, DOCG 2007 65.00 The Viticcio Estate stands amidst a rustic complex, charmingly situated on the gentle and sunny ridge of a hillside, overlooking sloping vineyards with superb sun exposure, above the picturesque, ancient town of Greve in Chianti. It lies midway between the cities of Florence and Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico region. Viticcio’s wines have graced our list for some time now, and for good reason; quality. “Subtle currant, cedar and floral aromas follow through to a dense, fullbodied palate of ripe fruits and silky tannins, with a long finish. A little age will soften this just slightly. Really serious. Best after 2010. 3,000 cases made” 93 pts WS- #40 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2010 Version 2.7- 12.13 8 -Vino di Tavola, Super-Tuscans, IGT 422 Falesco Vitiano Rosso, Umbria IGT 2010 26.00 “The 2010 Vitiano Rosso shows excellent balance with less of the overripe character that has been a signature of past vintages. Dark red fruit, roasted coffee beans, spices and mocha are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge from this fleshy, generous Vitiano Rosso. The fruit is beautifully layered all the way through to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. ” 88 pts WA 442 Argiano Non Confunditur, Tuscany IGT 2010 35.00 “This is really beautiful and balanced with refined tannins and a focused, beautiful ripe cherry and raspberry fruit. Long and super silky. Better in 2014 but so delicious now. Best NC ever from Argiano.”--93 points James Suckling 334 Ornellaia “Le Volte”, Bolgheri IGT 2011 39.00 Le Volte has always been a great introduction to Bolgheri blends as well as one of the best producers in the region: Ornellaia. “The 2011 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia (a 50-30-20 blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) is a gorgeous and silky smooth red wine that imparts bright tones of red cherry, blackberry, sweet spice and chocolate. The wine-s youthful freshness and fruit-forward mouthfeel is ultimately what makes it such a pleasure to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.” 90 WA 300 316 462 Ruffino Modus, Tuscany IGT 2006 44.00 Ruffino Modus, Tuscany IGT 2008 42.00 Ruffino Modus, Tuscany IGT 2009 42.00 Modus was first produced in 1997 from grapes selected in the vineyards of the Tuscan Estates of Ruffino. It was not, though, a new wine in the real sense of the term. Ruffino had, in fact, been experimenting with the cultivation of non-traditional grape varieties on Tuscan soil since the eighties. The wine’s base is Sangiovese, blended with the non-traditional varieties Cabernet and Merlot. The blend is 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. The blend has continued to show great success, garnering very high critical ratings in nearly every vintage. 430 Antinori Guado al Tasso “Il Bruciato”, Bolgheri IGT 2011 55.00 “The 2011 Bolgheri Rosso Il Bruciato (65% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Syrah) is a lovely wine with just enough cheerful informality to pair with hearty potato gnocchi with melted butter and fresh sage. The proverbial food-friendly Italian red, Il Bruciato offers balanced acidity, thick concentration and hearty black fruit flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018." 89 WA 418 Tenute Sette Ponti Toscana “Crognolo”, Tuscany IGT 2010 69.00 Tenuta Sette Ponti's first release was the 1998 vintage Crognolo, named after a wild bush, Cornus, which grows on the estate. The blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from vines of an average age of 25 to 35 years yields a refined, elegantly stylish wine of fruit forward lushness. “A wine with currant, spices and hazelnut character. Full body, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Chewy and rich. Consistently outstanding. Best from 2013 through 2018. 7,500 cases made.” 92 JS 436 Tenute Sette Ponti “Poggio al Lupo”, Tuscany IGT 2007 85.00 “Fascinating aromas of blackberry, cedar, tea and red licorice lead to a full body, with firm, polished tannins and a fresh finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante and Petit Verdot. Best after 2012. 1,500 cases made.” 93 points Wine Spectator Version 2.7- 12.13 9 326 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Toscana “Le Serre Nuove”, Bolgheri IGT 2009 95.00 This is the second wine from Ornellaia. It is made from barrels that are culled out of the selection process for Ornellaia with most of the fruit coming from the estate’s younger vines. “The 2009 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a gorgeous, fleshy wine that shows the radiant personality of the vintage. Mocha, espresso, raspberry jam and spices are some of the aromas and flavors that flow from this pliant, accessible red. This is all silk and polish. It is a gorgeous, rewarding wine to drink now and over the next 8-10 years. In 2009 the blend is 54% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The 2009 Serre Nuove spent about 15 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.” 92 WA 657 Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi Lamaione 2006, Tuscany IGT 2006 109.00 Lamaione is an exceptionally superb Supertuscan made from 100% merlot grown in the 12-hectare Lamaione vineyard, whose vines were planted in 1976 at an elevation of 300 metres. 100% of the wine is aged in new French oak for a period of two years. “Dark in color, with intense aromas of mineral, spice, blackberry and coffee bean. Full-bodied, with a wonderful core of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. Polished and very beautiful, with a lovely texture. A fantastic effort from the Frescobaldis. Best after 2011. 2,500 cases made.” 95 WS 338 Antinori “Tignanello”, Tuscany IGT 2008 94 WA 155.00 First made in 1971, Piero Antinori’s Tignanello is one of the catalysts of the Super Tuscan revolution (Tenuta San Guido’s “Sassicaia” was the forefather). “Tignanello is an object lesson in how to make Cabernet work with Sangiovese, the two varieties balancing and enhancing one another in admirable symbiosis” notes Daniel Thomases of The Wine Advocate. The wine is consistently one of the benchmark Super-Tuscans and is undoubtedly one of Tuscany’s most historically significant wines. 611 Tenute Sette Ponti “Oreno”, Tuscany IGT 2007 175.00 The estate of Sette Ponti lies in the heart of the Chianti zone, fifteen miles northwest of the city of Arezzo just past the village of San Giustino Valdarno. The name Sette Ponti, or "seven bridges," refers to the seven bridges crossing the Arno River on the road from Arezzo to Florence. Oreno is Sette Ponti’s top wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. It is typically a powerful, full-bodied and beautifully balanced wine. Oreno is a classic example of the SuperTuscan style; rich, refined and yet structured, a beautiful food wine. Notes from the 2005 Vintage: “Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, currant, raspberry and just a hint of toasty oak and coffee. Fullbodied, with supervelvety tannins and wonderful balance. The finish goes on and on. 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot and 20 percent Sangiovese. Best after 2011. 3,160 cases made.” 95 WS, 96 WE 331 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Toscana “Ornellaia”, Bolgheri IGT 2010 305.00 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot “Poured from the special anniversary bottle, the 2010 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a truly outstanding wine that leaves a lasting memory for those who are lucky enough to enjoy it. What stands out is the absolutely seamless-seamless-seamless (yes, it's worth repeating three times) integration of its many moving parts. The wine magically transitions from cherry, spice, chocolate and espresso in one melodic and continuous loop. It exudes balance and elegance over long, delicious minutes. It is profoundly impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030. Of all the grapevines planted on the Ornellaia estate, the 2010 vintage showed best results with Merlot, says Leonardo Raspini. Because the harvest was later than usual, the early-ripening grape enjoyed a slow and steady evolution.” 97+ pts WA Version 2.7- 12.13 10 -Montalcino 343 Argiano Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2008 49.00 “Argiano’s 2008 Rosso di Montalcino offers up floral red fruits in a fresh, vinous style. This is one of the more refined Rossos readers will find in 2008 and is among the better wines of the vintage.” 88 WA 410 Collelceto Brunello di Montalcino “Elia Palazzesi”, DOCG 2008 65.00 The Collelceto winery is on the west side of Montalcino, very near to the Ombrone river on the southwestern side of Montalcino (next to Antinori's Pian della Vigne). Although lower in elevation, they receive their "cooling" from the river, which allows them freshness in the mouthfeel...a hallmark of the 400m terroirs around the city. It was a traditionally run farmer's operation just a few years ago, but has now been taken over by dynamic Elia Palazzesi, who with the help of enologist Lorenzo Landi realized this small farms full potential in the form of a full fledged winery. “Bright fruit tones of cherry, pomegranate and red currant give this Brunello a pristine and youthful personality. The quality of those red fruit aromas is remarkable and the wine shows wellintegrated spice, leather and tobacco notes. A very welcome splash of sweet-fruit flavor helps smooth out Sangiovese’s natural acidity.” 91 WE 605 Domus Vitae Brunello di Montalcino, DOCG 2007 70.00 “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a very pretty wine laced with sweet red cherries, flowers, spices and mint. Layers of fruit take shape beautifully in the glass in this highly expressive, generous Brunello. The 2007 impresses for its intensity and shapely, elegant finish. This is a terrific effort from Domus Vitae. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” 93 WA 459 Mocali Brunello di Montalcino Vigna delle Raunate, DOCG 2007 75.00 “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna delle Raunate is a beautiful wine that captures the essence of the year and the best of the house style. A blast of dark red cherries, flowers, licorice, mint and smoke hits the palate as this extroverted Brunello opens up in the glass. The oak is beautifully balanced and the wine’s overall sense of harmony is terrific. The wine shuts down quickly in the glass, a very positive sign for the future. The Vigna delle Raunate was aged in a combination of cask and smaller French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.” 92+ WA 365 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino, DOCG 2006 80.00 While winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco has been a craft for centuries, until fairly recently the vineyards were cultivated by each family living on the estate solely for personal consumption. The emergence of a commercial operation in the late 1950’s introduced the world to the exemplary vintages of Castiglion del Bosco. Today, the wines are consistently recognized for their excellence. “Plush and softly textured, this modern expression boasts generous tones of black fruit with smooth tannins.” 93 WE 307 Padeletti Brunello di Montalcino, DOCG 2007 85.00 “Here’s a bright and bold Brunello with loads of ripe cherry, inky density and a beautifully polished feel with crushed mineral and wet river stone elements. Although young, Giampaolo’s quality obsessed character has placed his wines among the best of Montefalco's elite growers. "The 2007 Montefalco Sagrantino Colle Grimaldesco is an immensely appealing wine that captures plenty of varietal character yet also manages to be open and radiant. Firm yet beautifully balanced tannins frame the dark fruit. Hints of licorice, tar and medicinal herbs develop in the glass, adding further complexity. The Colle Grimaldesco is opulent but not over the top. It is a winner from Tabarrini. And although most dolcetto is made to be easy to drink, almost gulpable, some producers are take this grape varietal seriously. Seghesio, based in Monforte, makes excellent wines that capture the best of the soft textural elements that are the hallmark of the modern school in Piedmont. The Dolcetto d’Alba Vigneto della Chiesa is a drop-dead gorgeous wine. This big, full-bodied red bursts from the glass with loads of vibrant dark cherries in a super-ripe yet beautifully-balanced style. It is not to be missed. 628 Vietti Barbera d’Asti “Tre Vigne” DOC 2010 33.00 Ruby purple color with ripe red cherry aromas with hints of mineral and vanilla. A dry, medium bodied red wine with refreshing acidity (making it perfect to pair with food) and soft tannins, the Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne is well balanced with good integration of oak, good complexity and a finish of more red cherries. Pair with antipasti, rich salads, grilled seasoned vegetables, hearty soups, pastas or with breaded veal, pork, chicken with light sauces. 607 Vietti Nebbiolo Langhe “Perbacco”, DOC 2010 46.00 Vietti has long been an elite, reference-point producer in Piedmont but in recent years brothers-inlaw Luca Currado and Mario Cordero have taken major steps to further elevate the quality of their wines across the board. Vietti's Perbacco is made from Barolo-designated parcels that don't meet the qualitative standard for the estate's multi-cru Barolo Castiglione. Perbacco is for all practical purposes a Barolo, but because it its bottled two months earlier than regulations permit, the wine is sold as Langhe Nebbiolo. “Rich and chunky, with dense tannins focusing the cherry, floral, tobacco and underbrush flavors. This is compact on the finish, showing more savory than fruit elements. Drink now through 2018. 2,200 cases made.” 90 WS -Barbaresco 405 Orlando Abrigo Rocche Meruzzano Barbaresco, DOCG 2007 75.00 “A very fruit forward Barbaresco, with loads of blackberries, blueberries, and hints of spices on the nose. A translucent red, the Bordini flows with the essence of crushed flowers, berries and sweet baking spices, all of which come together in a mid-weight frame. This shows lovely density and richness in a classy, understated style, with plenty of detail and a long, polished finish. As good as this is, I get the sense there is significant potential for this vineyard to produce even better wine. In 2007 the Bordini is a gem from La Spinetta. Cooperatives are owned by the members of a group, in this case the growers, who typically would not be able to produce wine and market it on their own based on their very small holdings. However, with a unified front and a single winemaking facility, all the vineyard owners can benefit from the strength of the group; the cooperative. The Produttori del Barbaresco was established in 1958 by a local priest from the village of Barbaresco, who believed that the local grape growers had to band together to produce wine in order to survive. He gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco, which has become a standard benchmark for cooperatives throughout the world of winemaking. The first few vintages were made in the church basement and today, the winery stands just across the corner from that location. The managing director of the winery today is Aldo Vacca, who has done a brilliant job of securing fruit from 56 different growers in Barbaresco (all of whom are members of the Produttori), representing 250 acres of the finest vineyards. Moreover, Vacca has maintained a wine making philosophy of using only large wooden casks (grandi botti) in order to craft a wine that truly represents the local Barbaresco terroir. More than that, by favoring large casks over the small barrels that many producers find so appealing these days, each wine offers a special sense of place, especially the single vineyard offerings, so that the Asili Barbaresco tastes much different than the one from Rabajà or Montestefano. The winery makes wines solely from the Nebbiolo grape and there are three separate wine types: a Nebbiolo Langhe (Langhe is the larger zone where Barbaresco is located; Barolo is also part of Langhe), a Barbaresco normale, and the cru bottlings of Barbaresco (effectively the single vineyard wines), of which there are nine different vineyards bottled. What truly makes the Produttori del Barbaresco such an important producer is that it serves as a reference point for Barbaresco. Even if you prefer a riper, flashier, oakier approach when it comes to this wine, one has to look at the wines of the Produttori as the bottlings that define the classic style of Barbaresco. 437 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco DOCG 2008 55.00 “The Produttori’s 2008 Barbaresco is simply fabulous. A sweet bouquet melds into expressive fruit in a Barbaresco that is exceptionally polished and refined. The 2008 boasts striking sweetness and inner perfume to match its understated, elegant personality. Quite frankly, the 2008 is very hard to resist today, as the tannins are quite polished. Unusually sweet, silky and refined, the 2008 will take the better part of a decade to show the full breadth of its pedigree. It is one of the very finest values in ageworthy wine from anywhere in the world. This is a magnificent showing from the Produttori and a great introduction to the 2008 harvest at this historic house. This is a big, hulking Barbaresco, but its potential is evident, as the wine’s balance is impeccable. Still, readers will have to exercise considerable patience here. I have seldom been disappointed by older bottles of the Rabaja and expect the 2005 will turn out to be another fine vintage for this bottling as well. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.” 94 pts WA, 95 pts WS 484 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva DOCG 2007 100.00 “The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is a big, dark wine loaded with dark fruit, menthol, tar, flowers, mint, rosemary and an array of balsamic notes that develop in the glass. The Rabaja possesses stunning depth to match its muscular tannins. It is a dazzling wine endowed with tons of inner perfume and sheer personality as it saturates the palate from start to finish. Today, the Rabaja comes across as huge and almost Barolo like, but it has plenty of Rabaja character. Purists Version 2.7- 12.13 14 will want to age the wine for a number of years to allow the baby fruit to drop off, but the truth is, it is pretty stunning even today. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037.” 95 WA -Barolo 443 Vietti Barolo “Castiglione”, DOCG 2008 69.00 “The 2008 Barolo Castiglione is striking. Sweet red berries, freshly cut flowers, spices and mint are some of the many nuances that flow from this impeccable, mid-weight Barolo. The 2008 Castiglione impresses for its exceptional balance, polished finish and sheer beauty. This is a feminine Castiglione graced with exquisite class. With time in the glass, the wine fleshes out beautifully. Once again, the Castiglione delivers incredible value. In 2008 Vietti did not make their Villero Riserva, instead that juice went into the Castiglione. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.” 92+ WA 426 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo “Monvigliero”, DOCG 2008 78.00 “The 2008 Barolo Monvigliero boasts serious power and richness in this vintage. A heady melange of dark red cherries, flowers, licorice, incense and smoke emerges from the glass as the Monvigliero captivates all of the senses. Unlike the Gramolere, the Monvigliero is quite youthful today. It needs at least a few years to strut its stuff, but is nevertheless impressive. Layers of fruit continue to build to a huge crescendo of aromas and flavors on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.” 94 WA 425 Giovanni Manzone Barolo “Le Gramolere”, DOCG 2003 97.00 The particular soils of Manzone’s Le Gramolere Vineyard foster naturally low-yielding vines which produce wines that are approachable while young, yet remain amongst the most concentrated and longest lived of all Barolo. Manzone’s vineyards are also among the highest in the region, and as a result his wines show unusually delicate, often ethereal personalities. “The 2003 Barolo Gramolere reveals lovely balance in its tobacco, spices, earthiness and stewed prunes. Made in a sweet, ethereal style, this delicate Barolo offers outstanding length in a mediumbodied style. It is a very well-balanced wine, especially considering the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.” 91 WA 342 G. D. Vajra Barolo “Bricco Delle Viole”, DOCG 2008 110.00 “Aldo and Milena Vajra are among the quietest and most introspective of Piedmont’s top echelon growers. It is the wines that do the talking here, and they do that ever so eloquently. The estate’s continued focus on excellence throughout their entire range comes through in spades in these new releases. “Vajra's 2008 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is drop-dead gorgeous. Rose petals, flowers, spices and mint are some of the many, many nuances that unfold as this gracious Barolo opens up in the glass. The 2008 is at once light on its feet yet rich, deep and resonant, expressing the myriad contradictions that are at the heart of what makes Barolo one of the world's truly icon wines. Today the tannins are a little firm, of course, but there is an inner sweetness to the 2008 that is compelling. This is a fabulous showing from the Vajra family. 2018-2038.” 96 WA 431 Mauro Sebaste Barolo “Monvigliero”, DOCG 2004 128.00 “A wine with wonderful purity of fruit, from plum to sliced orange, yet there's an underlying mineral character as well. Full-bodied and superracy, with chewy tannins and a long, long finish. A powerful red. Best after 2011. 845 cases made.”- 94 points Wine Spectator Producer Note: Vietti The Vietti family has been tending vines in Barolo since the middle of the 19th Century, although it was not until the ensuing century that they purchased their own vines. At the helm at this time was Mario Vietti, who subsequently ceded control of the family estate to his daughter Luciana Vietti and her husband, Alfredo Currado. Alfredo has been the true driving force behind the continuing development of this family business. A major Version 2.7- 12.13 15 contribution to the estate, and it would seem to Barolo as a whole, was Alfredo's conviction that individual vineyard sites should be vinified and bottled separately, bringing forth the terroir of Barolo's greatest slopes. This he did in 1952, establishing what has become commonplace amongst the top producers in Barolo; the bottling of singlevineyard Barolo. Vietti wines from the Lazzarito vineyard, Rocche, Brunate and Ravera vineyards have been bottled separately since then. Their Barolos have since become benchmark wines for the entire region. Sadly the world lost Alfredo Currado in 2010, but his son Luca has the helm and has continued the impressive offerings from this family run property in Castiglione Falletto. 654 Vietti Barolo “Lazzarito”, DOCG 2007 190.00 “The 2007 Barolo Lazzarito is a superb, plush wine loaded with dark fruit, flowers of all sorts, sweet menthol and minerals, all of which flow through to the long, powerful finish. The wine's inner perfume emerges over time, adding even more nuance and subtlety to this big Barolo. The 2007 Lazzarito is far from an open, easygoing wine, in fact it needs time, and lots of it. Anticipated maturity: 2022-2042.” 96+ WA 653 Vietti Barolo “Roche”, DOCG 2007 190.00 “Vietti's 2007 Barolo Rocche is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. The bouquet alone is transcendental. The voluptuous, classy Rocche shows off endless layers of fruit in an exciting and totally alluring expression of Nebbiolo. The wine seems to float on the palate, as the essence of geraniums, red berries, hard candy and minerals conquer all of the senses. Fine, silky tannins frame a finish of breathtaking beauty. The Rocche spent a full 5 weeks of contact on the skins. Like all the Vietti Baroli, malolactic fermentation was carried out in French oak after which the wine was racked into large, neutral casks for aging. The 2007 Rocche is the very finest wine I have ever tasted from Vietti. I only hope Alfredo Currado had a chance to taste this at least a few times before he passed away last year. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2032.” 99 WA 333 Gaja “Sperss” Langhe, DOC 1998 340.00 “The 1998 Sperss reveals a perfume of black fruits, truffles, earth, and spice box. Dense, massive yet seamless, this beautifully integrated wine possesses low acidity as well as a terrific finish. Aromas include cherry liqueur, spice and chocolate.” 91 pts WE 311 Allegrini “Palazzo Della Torre”, IGT 2010 34.00 The Allegrini farm is based in Fumane di Valpolicella. The Allegrini family has been handing down grape farming and wine producing traditions in this small but important town in the Valpolicella Classico area since the 16th century. The techniques used for this wine's production are completely innovative and untraditional. Palazzo della Torre is made from traditional Veneto grapes. 70% of the grapes are vinified immediately. The remaining 30% are left to dry until the end of December when they are vinified and then refermented with the wine from the fresh grapes Version 2.7- 12.13 16 giving the wine an extra dimension of richness and body “The 2010 Palazzo della Torre is 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese that is air-dried until December after the harvest. That brief appassimento has shaped a delicious wine with loads of cherry and dark spice. It’s a great value with the depth of concentration and length that would match a wine double this price.” 90 pts WA 362 Zenato Valpolicella Superiore “Ripassa”, DOC 2009 46.00 This wine is a blend of 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, and 10% Sangiovese. As soon as the dried grapes for the Amarone are fermented, selected batches of Valpolicella wine are “re-passed” over the Amarone’s lees, thus starting a second fermentation that slightly increases the alcohol content and gives the wine deeper color, increased extract, and more complex aromas. "The name "Ripassa" refers to the unique winemaking technique, ripasso, in which the wine undergoes a double fermentation for increased concentration and density. This is bold, powerful and tightly packed with cherry and exotic spice aromas." 90 WE 441 La Giaretta “I Quadretti” Valpolicella Superiore, DOC 2008 65.00 From the famed “I Quadretti” vineyard comes this “baby Amarone”. It is made partially with dried grapes (like the much-more-expensive Amarone). The “I Quadretti” is one of the Veneto’s most perfectly situated vineyards and grows only the best grapes of the area (corvina, corvinona, and rondinella). The aromas and front palate of the “I Quadretti” are Amarone-like with dried dark fruits, rich coffee, and almonds, but this is not as heavy and sweet as Amarone. It is much more food-friendly, finishing with bright black cherry fruit and spice. Production Note: Amarone della Valpolicella Amarone is one of Italy’s treasured wines, not only because of the intensely flavored wines themselves, but also due to the fascinating production method that helps to create them. Amarones are produced in the Veneto region in northeastern Italy by the same producers who make Valpolicella, a light easy drinking red. Made from local varieties Corvina, Molinara, and Rondinella, winemakers were looking for a way to increase aromatic intensity, flavor profile, and age worthiness of their valpolicellas. In order to concentrate the natural sugars of the grapes, winemakers began drying their grapes after harvest, to remove water from the berries, while retaining sweetness and flavor (this process was originally used to make Recioto della Valpolicella, a sweet wine- the first Amarones were considered mistakes, Reciotos that were allowed to ferment too long). Once this drying process (called appassimento in Italian) is complete (typically three to four months), the grapes have lost a third of their water and have shriveled to raisins. The grapes are then gently pressed and the must is fermented to dry, yielding a very intense, high alcohol wine. They are usually aged in casks or barrels for a minimum 24 months before being released. The resulting wines are usually big, rich full- bodied wines that tend to have flavor profiles of dark chocolate, dried fig and raisin, and earth and the wines should be paired with heartier fare like meat roasts or aged cheeses. Amarones usually require several to ten years of bottle aging before their flavors mature and the wines can continue to develop for 20 years or more. 473 Recchia Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico “Ca' Bertoldi”, DOC 2005 60.00 “A tarry red, with firm tannins backing tobacco-tinged flavors of dried black currant, cocoa powder, cherry preserves, ground spice and nut. This shows good intensity and focus, ending with a well-knit, lingering finish. Drink now through 2025.” 92 WS 366 Stefano Accordini Amarone della Valpolicella "Acinatico", DOC 2009 96.00 This estate winery has deep country roots: the founders have been share-croppers, then landowners and finally wine-makers. The company is led by Stefano himself helped by his wife Giuseppina and his two sons, Tiziano and Daniele. The family estate extends over 4 hectares situated in Negrar, the heart of Valpolicella, in a place called Bessole. This wine is medium-dark ruby color with smoke. baked berry and tar in the nose. Intense on the palate with youthful, rich, ripe black fruit, licorice and dried blackberry. Superb finish with great length. Version 2.7- 12.13 17 318 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, DOC 2008 115.00 “Zenato is a reliable producer of quality Amarone, producing wines that always show personality and intensity. This delivers bold fruit and background tones of polished leather and dry tobacco. The mouthful is very bold and thick, boasting a playful touch of sweet spice.” 92 WE 325 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, DOC 2008 125.00 Perhaps one of the most consistent performers in the entire region is Allegrini’s exceptional Amarone. “Wonderfully intense and complex, this 2008 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella is one of the most impressive young (just released) Amarone della Valpolicella that the Independent Wine Review has come across this year. Not only is this 2008 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella outstanding now but it should continue to develop into the future.” 92 pts The Independent Wine Review, 91 pts WS American Red Wines Cabernet Sauvignon & Meritage -California and Washington State 401 McManis Cabernet Sauvignon, California 2012 24.00 McManis Family Vineyards is a grower and vintner of premium varietal winegrapes located in what is now known as the River Junction appellation. The McManis family has been growing grapes in this region since 1938. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon shows a distinctive blackberry component that is layered with hints of clove and mocha spiciness. The fruit on the palate has a richness and density that is supported by moderate levels of tannins. A great entry level Cabernet. 328 Ferrari-Carano Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 2010 34.00 Ferrari-Carano Cabernet Sauvignon comes primarily from mountain grown fruit in Alexander Valley. Ripe black cherry aromas delight along with fresh boysenberry, spicy elements of clove, cedar and tea. Up front flavors of juicy blackberry, vanilla and cola are complemented by lingering notes of dark chocolate. This wine has excellent viscosity and smooth, pleasant structure with refined, yet generous, layers of tannin. Blend: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot 616 Seventy Five Wine Company “The Sum”, Napa Valley, CA 2011 38.00 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah. Sweet blue and black fruits, camphor, and spice box all jump from the glass of this dense, medium to full-bodied, juicy, supple wine, which is a hedonist's dream come true. “As we continue to prove our talent at consistently delivering high quality, the 2011 Seventy Five Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon may be the best we have released to date. We are very proud of this wine.” Tuck Beckstoffer 421 Venge Vineyards “Silencieux” Cabernet, Napa Valley, California 2011 65.00 Kirk Venge has been around great cabernet since his childhood. His father, Nils, made the 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet, the first California wine to receive 100 points from wine critic Robert Parker. Kirk, now at the helm of the family business, wanted to produce a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that would completely over deliver on flavor and longevity in the bottle. The result was Silencieux. "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Silencieux is a much larger cuvee of 1,568 cases from top sources in Napa. Another big time winner, it is a delicious, reasonably priced Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that showcases Venge’s Midas touch with this varietal. Rich, concentrated, round and Version 2.7- 12.13 18 generous, this is a sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon with no hard edges. Enjoy it now and over the next 10-15 years." 92 WA 357 Tamber Bey Rabicano, Yountville, Napa Valley, California 2010 65.00 Tamber Bey is a privately-owned and operated winery that produces wine from its two vineyards at the heart of the Napa Valley, the Estate Vineyard in the Oakville Appellation and the Deux Chevaux Vineyard in the Yountville Appellation. The name Tamber Bey reflects the names of owner Barry Waitte’s first two Arabian endurance horses, Tamborina (Tamber) and Bayamo (Bey). This wine is the Deux Chevaux Vineyard blend; a Bordeaux style blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. In the glass, the nose is an explosion of dark and red fruits that are surrounded with exotic elements of fresh cut tobacco, artisan chocolate and fresh Burgundian summer currants. The palate is full of flavor and subtle structure combined with complexities that can only be achieved through the careful blending of multiple Bordeaux varietals. The finish has already developed nuances associated with a great Napa Valley red wine. Fresh and perfectly ripened fruit notes are buttressed by a mouthful of elements that showcase the terroir of the Deux Chevaux Vineyard. While approachable in its youth, look for this wine to age gracefully for years to come. 541 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA 2009 68.00 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Malbec “A fine Cabernet from this veteran producer, elegant and stylish. Not one of your fruit bombs, it shows modulated blackberry, currant and herb flavors, leading to a long, spicy finish. Really distinguished, although it’s not an ager. Contains a splash of Syrah and Petite Sirah for complexity and color.” 91 WE 623 Hall Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA 2010 74.00 This is a thrilling set of wines from Hall. The estate favors a rich, extroverted style, yet all of their wines have distinct personalities and tons of sheer character. Meticulous viticulture followed by native yeast fermentations, slow, natural malos and minimal rackings are at the heart of the approach at Hall. The wines are aged in French oak (mostly Taransaud, 40-90% new) and are bottled with no fining or filtration. Readers who appreciate the more opulent side of Napa Valley will find much to admire here. “Well-built, with a firm core of dark berry, cherry and wilted rose, showing good density and intensity. This gains depth and holds focus, ending with ripe, chewy tannins.” 90 WS, 90 IWC 411 Chappellet “Signature” Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA 2011 87.00 The "Signature" Cabernet Sauvignon has been Chappellet's flagship wine for more than three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and ageing potential, yet seductively forward in its concentrated varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of the Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavored grapes. For Napa Valley standards, this is about as good as it gets for the money. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec and 3% Merlot. 416 Orin Swift Cellars Papillon, Napa Valley, California 2010 99.00 Some have referred to Dave Phinney as the man with the Midas touch. It would seem that his wines are like gold, some attaining near cult status after a relatively short run of production. If you are familiar with the buzz surrounded wine “The Prisoner”, consider this the BIG BROTHER. Papillon is a bordeaux-styled blend that is out-of-control good. Primarily Cabernet, but all sourced from some of the oldest and grarliest vines on Vince Tofanelli's famous vineyard on the north end of Napa Valley, it is all the balance, structure and complexity one would expect from a deftly constructed blend of grapes grown by one of Napa's master craftsman. It is big and jammy and juicy and enjoyable. It is also packaged in probably one of the heaviest glass bottles you have ever seen. The label consists of a black and white photo of Vince Tofanelli's grape and mud Version 2.7- 12.13 19 smeared hands with the word Papillon written across his knuckles. Slick packaging, great juice, and near rock star status….no wonder it’s hard to keep around. 306 Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 2009 115.00 Larkmead is one of the historic estates in Napa Valley, with a rich lineage that goes back to 1895. “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with a rush of black fruit, smoke, licorice, graphite and tar. All the elements flow together gracefully towards the big, fleshy finish. There is plenty of tannin to support the fruit, suggesting the wine will drink well for a number of years. I especially like the way the wine keeps growing in the glass. This is one of the firmer, more vibrant 2009s readers will come across. Simply put, it is fabulous. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.” 94 WA 341 Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 2010 115.00 “Larkmead’s entry-level 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate captivates all of the senses from the very first taste. A huge, opulent yet structured Cabernet, the 2010 shows off tons of richness, power and structure, all while maintaining considerable detail and nuance. Black currants, melted road tar and asphalt blast thorough to the intense, palate-staining finish. I can’t imagine this being ready to drink before its 10th birthday. The 2010 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. This is a great 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. I was completely blown away by Larkmead this year. The 2010s are simply phenomenal across the board. While many wineries are aggressively pushing the boundaries of pricing, Larkmead takes the opposite approach. The fashionable cult-loving crowd might look past these offerings, but savvy readers will recognize that Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignons in particular are some of the very best wines being made in Napa Valley today. If forced to choose one top-flight Napa Valley producer that remains under the radar, Larkmead would get my vote. These are spectacular wines that deserve a much broader audience. I can’t say enough good things about what proprietor Cam Baker, winemaker Andy Smith and the entire team at Larkmead are doing at this historic property.” 95 WA 388 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five, Napa Valley, CA 2010 121.00 "Mocha, tar, spices and tobacco all flow from the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five. A rich, intense wine, the 2010 impresses for its depth and sheer power. This is far from an easygoing Cabernet. I imagine the 2010 might still be going strong at age 20. The cold, late season yielded an utterly magnificent Cabernet that will challenge the top labels of many other properties. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025." 94 WA 380 Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 2011 125.00 “Although tasty, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is slightly less intense and powerful compared to the 2010. It reveals supple tannins, abundant black fruit and spice notes, and an easy-drinking yet seriously endowed, medium to full-bodied personality. Drink it over the next decade.” 90 WA 372 Stanton Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, California 2010 130.00 The Stanton family has been growing grapes in the Napa Valley since 1947. Beginning with the harvest of 1999, Doug Stanton began selecting some of their best Oakville Cabernet for the Stanton Vineyards label. In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, the Stantons grow Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah. Roughly half of our acreage lies in the Oakville appellation, and the other half within the St. Helena appellation of the Napa Valley. “Engagingly complex and well done, this exotic version features creamy oak and a graceful core of currant, red berry, mocha and espresso flavors. The fruit prevails in the end, lending intrigue to the accompanying elemants. Drink now through 2022. 340 cases made.” 92 WS Version 2.7- 12.13 20 355 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet "Howell Mountain", Napa Valley, CA 2010 140.00 "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain covers every inch of the palate with layers of deep, rich, dark fruit. Blueberries, blackberries, violet and cloves seem to pop right out of the glass in this juicy, extroverted wine. Deceptively approachable, the 2010 has plenty of tannin lurking beneath its massive fruit. I would not be surprised if the 2010 shuts down in bottle. It is one of the deepest, inkiest 2010s I tasted from Howell Mountain. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.” 96 WA 305 Araujo "Altagracia" Estate Red, Napa Valley, CA 2010 165.00 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec “The 2010 Altagracia is surprisingly huge in this vintage. Layers of exotic black fruit, spices, mocha and espresso burst onto the palate with striking depth, power and richness. There is an immediacy to the 2010 that is simply compelling. No longer a true second wine, Altagracia now also includes a small amount of purchased fruit and is being crafted to stand on its own. The 2010 achieves that, and so much more. It is a fabulous effort from the team at Araujo. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025+.” 96 WA 381 Caymus Vineyards “Special Selection” Cabernet, Napa Valley, CA 2010 185.00 Caymus’s 1984 and 1990 Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon were both named "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator magazine in 1989 and 1994 respectively. Caymus Special Selection Cabernet thus becomes (and remains today) the only wine to be selected twice for this honor. “The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection exhibits an opaque purple color, slightly more toasty oak in the aromatics, and explosive richness on the attack, mid-palate and length. The nose is slightly more restrained than in the regular bottling, but there is no doubting the Special Selection is a cut or two above the Napa bottling when it hits the palate. Extraordinary purity of fruit, creme de cassis, licorice and incense all emerge from this full-bodied, iconic classic. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 25+ years.” 98 pts WA, 96 WS- #83 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013 461 Rudd Estate “Oakville”, Napa Valley, California 2005 195.00 "The 2005 Oakville Estate Proprietary Red turned out to be a final blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. There are around 2,300+ cases of this wine, which has a deep ruby/purple color and a beautifully sweet nose of blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with some burning embers, spring flowers, cedar, and subtle wood. It is full-bodied and dense, with hints of espresso roast and chocolate in the mouth. Precise, pure, and rich, it is a beauty that I think will age for at least two or more decades." 94 WA 395 397 398 393 463 464 Shafer Hillside Select, Napa Valley, California, 2004 97 WA 425.00 Shafer Hillside Select, Napa Valley, California, 2005 97 WA 370.00 Shafer Hillside Select, Napa Valley, California, 2006 96 WA 345.00 Shafer Hillside Select, Napa Valley, California, 2007 98+ WA 350.00 Shafer Hillside Select, Napa Valley, California, 2008 96 WS, 96 WA 365.00 Shafer Hillside Select, Napa Valley, California, 2009 98 V 385.00 “Shafer’s flagship wine is the 2,000 case cuvee of Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 32 months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling, it is one of the world’s great Cabernet Sauvignons, and especially to fans of California Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine needs no introduction. It is, quite frankly, one of California’s benchmark wines, exceptional in every vintage, and marked by characteristics that make it such: gorgeous dark inky color, intense and complex aromas of black currants, black cherries, charcoal, a multi-layered and fleshy mid-palate and superb opulence. The finish is always one to be remembered. It is a flamboyant wine that speaks of pure California.” Wine Advocate Version 2.7- 12.13 21 621 Bond St. Eden, Napa Valley, California 2008 525.00 Bill Harlan and his team make the BOND wines through long-term lease arrangements they hold with vineyard owners in a handful of top hillside sites in Napa Valley. The Melbury, Quella and Vecina vineyards are planted with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The St. Eden vineyard includes 5% Cabernet Franc that was recently grafted onto Merlot rootstocks, while the Pluribus vineyard includes 13% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. “The 2008 St. Eden is one of the richest, fleshiest and best-balanced of the 2008s in the Bond portfolio. Dark red fruit, flowers, minerals and spices are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. The 2008 has the mid-palate pliancy that is less evident in some of the other 2008s here. There is plenty of focus as well, especially on the long, saline finish. Tar, smoke and licorice add the final notes of complexity. Anticipated maturity: 20182028.” 94 WA 624 Bond Vecina, Napa Valley, California 2008 525.00 “The 2008 Vecina is a huge, strapping wine bursting with dark fruit, leather, licorice, smoke, minerals and tar. It possesses striking mid-palate depth and more than enough fruit to stand up to the firm, imposing tannins. Iron, graphite, smoke and minerals are layered into the dark, brooding finish. This is an impressive showing. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.” 95 WA 433 Harlan Estate Proprietary Red Wine, Napa Valley, California 2004 800.00 “The 2004 Harlan Estate is probably the most precocious and accessible Harlan Estate that this perfectionist team has made. Already compelling, the wine has notes of roasted coffee, charcoal, blackberry, spring flowers, and some background sweet, toasty notes. Dense, fleshy, exuberant, even flamboyant by the standards of Bill Harlan, this wine exhibits no jaggedness or rough edges, has relatively high tannins, but they melt away on the palate. The wine is sensationally wellendowed, long, and rich – a tour de force in winemaking. They can do no wrong at Harlan, and it is obvious, even in the most challenging vintages such as 1998, that this estate is a true grand cru/first growth, making wines of irrefutable world-class quality. Of course, none of this comes cheap, as the price is now moving up into the league with Screaming Eagle, but there are no shortage of takers.” 98 WA Merlot 403 McManis Merlot, California 2012 24.00 McManis Family Vineyards is a grower and vintner of premium varietal winegrapes located in what is now known as the River Junction appellation. The McManis family has been growing grapes in this region since 1938. The 2005 Merlot has a ripe, fruit forward, dark berry character that is balanced with a nice toasted oak. Simple, juicy and very pleasurable. 364 Chat. Ste. Michelle Merlot Canoe Ridge Estate, Columbia Valley, WA 2010 44.00 The Vineyard at Canoe Ridge Estate was planted in 1991 and the Canoe Ridge Estate winery was built in 1993 to accommodate St. Michelle’s growing world-class red wine portfolio. The estate is situated in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, established in 2005 to distinguish it from the massive Columbia Valley AVA that surrounds it. “Built for the long haul, this rich red leads with suave oak scents. With air, the oak relents and a rich, dark cherry-skin fruit core emerges, accented by tobacco and tar, generous yet reined in by mineral tannins. Give it time to integrate, and then serve with steak.” 91 W&S 322 Northstar Merlot, Columbia Valley, Washington, 2009 66.00 Northstar Winery, located in Walla Walla, Washington, is dedicated to the production of ultrapremium Merlot that will be considered among the world’s best, showcasing the Columbia Valley’s star grape variety. “"The 2009 Merlot Columbia Valley (81% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot) is easily the largest production release from this estate, with over 8,000 cases Version 2.7- 12.13 22 produced. Aged in 95% French and 5% American oak, 57% being new, for 18 months, it offers a beautiful bouquet of black cherry, red currants, underbrush and toast as well as a perfectly balanced, silky and elegant feel in the mouth. Leaning heavily towards to finesse driven side of the spectrum, with silky tannin, medium body and moderate concentration, it will evolve gracefully for upwards of a decade."--92 pts WA 356 Shafer Vineyards Merlot, Napa Valley, California 2010 83.00 “The 2010 Merlot (a blend of 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Malbec) is sensational. Its dense purple color is accompanied by gorgeous aromas of black fruits and chocolate, a sweetness to the tannin and length that almost makes a mockery of Merlots produced elsewhere in Napa, a voluminous, chewy texture and great elegance and purity. Shafer Vineyards appears to have the Midas touch with just about any fruit they receive. The killer 2010 Merlot may be the finest Merlot they have produced in 20-25 years. It should drink well for 10-15 years." 94 WA 345 Arietta Merlot Hudson Vineyard, Napa Valley, California 2006 90.00 “Some of California’s more innovative wines emerge from proprietor Fritz Hatton, the well-known auctioneer who is also a classical pianist. Hatton has turned out a beautiful 2006 Merlot. This 100% Merlot exhibits that varietal’s chocolate fudge, espresso roast, and mocha characteristics along with a hint of truffles and loads of berry fruit. One of the top Merlots being made in California’s North Coast, it should drink beautifully for 12-15 years.” 92 WA, 93 Tanzer 631 Pahlmeyer Merlot, Napa Valley, California 2009 125.00 “Plush and richly structured, but with a dense, structured core, offering aromas of red currant and toasty mocha that lead to complex flavors of black cherry and Asian spice. By "cold soaking" the crushed grapes and fermenting at moderate temperatures, bright fruit flavors are extracted from the grape, without harsh tannins. This Pinot Noir is a brilliant, deep ruby color with delicate aromas of raspberry, strawberry and a soft whisper of vanilla. Bright flavors of ripe raspberries and strawberries, layered with subtle nuances of vanilla oak lead to a rich, full fruit finish. 438 Paraiso Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands, California 2009 36.00 The 2009 growing season consisted of high winds, dry days, and bay fogs to create a cool, but very long, growing season. These growing conditions are ideal for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, and lead to full, forward fruit flavors and ideal acidity. The 2009 Estate Pinot Noir is a fine example of clonal diversity coming together in one wine. The focus is decidedly Burgundian, with flavors of raspberry, cherry and wild berries, good acidity, and a nice French oak complexity. 324 J. Lohr Vineyard Series “Fog’s Reach” Pinot Noir, Arroyo Secco, CA 2011 44.00 “Shows true cool-climate varietal character in the aromas and flavors of cherries, cola, pomegranates and rhubarb pie, with complicating notes from charred oak barrels. Robert Parker, Jr. is one of three owners in Beaux Frères vineyard and winery. Robert never reviews Beaux Frères for his publications, but you will find his imprint in the winery's tasting notes, and other publications have reviewed the wines with critical praise. “Elegant, refined and beautifully focused, layering its red cherry, black cherry, blueberry and currant fruit into a seamless package without tremendous weight. The 2012 vintage saw a return to the long, warm and mild growing conditions that Zin loves. To manage the large crop that was produced that year, Seghesio managed their vineyards with extensive crop thinning and canopy positioning. Combining spicy, briary, and lush Zin fruit characteristics from vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys, this wine was aged for 10 months in 60% American oak barrels (15% new) and 40% in neutral French and Hungarian oak. It's 87% Zinfandel, with the balance composed of typical Zin companions Petite Sirah, Carignane, and a splash of Syrah. Dave decided he wanted to make a high quality Zinfandel without the constraints of a single AVA. 2007 Saldo was the inaugural release. The wine is a blend of many exceptional zinfandel vineyards throughout California. The term "saldo" has many different meanings in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In Spanish it mainly refers to "balance on hand", and sometimes it can mean "from here and there". This wine represents the best of the best lots made by Dave from vineyards all across Northern California. 371 The Prisoner Wine Company “The Prisoner”, Napa Valley, California 2011 68.00 Once again Dave Phinney displays his talents as a master blender. This is a genuine indicator of a talented winemaker, and it’s not just about blending different varietals. First you have to find the grapes, be able to buy them, know the vineyard sites, the growers, and the growing season from all the different micro-climates. Then it’s blending different barrels, picked at different times, from different vineyards. It’s a monumental task, and Phinney has proven time and time again that he’s very good at it. An 18 acre, 28 year old hillside vineyard in southern Mendocino near Hopland, CA. Longtime farming family, Nelson Family Vineyards, owns and manages this ranch. A very famous Sonoma clone, Pacini, is the bud wood source of this Zinfandel. Cole loam soils that inhibit production keeping the tonnage under 4 tons/acre and help exhibit structured spicy terroir of the area. The winemaking team from Michael David is continuing to produce top quality wines not only from Lodi, but also carry that same winemaking style towards other top Zinfandel growing regions in California. 602 Michael David “Lust” Zinfandel, Lodi, California 2010 75.00 “Each year only the most outstanding small lots are isolated from the over 100 produced at Michael David to bottle under Lust. This vintage, three lots stood out as being the most structured while displaying a ton of ripe berry and spice characteristics we all expect to come from a Zinfandel. To enhance this wine all three lots were blended together and put into new American oak barrels that were purchased especially for this program. After being aged for 18 months we blended with a little Petite Sirah to increase the already great depth, color, and tannin structure. Ready to drink now, but with the hefty amount of tannins this wine could easily be set down for a few years.” Winery notes Syrah and Petite Sirah 402 McManis Petite Sirah, California 2011 25.00 McManis Family Vineyards is a grower and vintner of premium varietal winegrapes located in what is now known as the River Junction appellation. The McManis family has been growing grapes in this region since 1938. The 2005 Petite Sirah is my favorite wine in the McManis portfolio. It is just like blueberry jam. It's incredibly supple and lively for a petite, with ripe tannins, a decent complexity and notes of spicy oak and licorice. 480 Hedges DLD Syrah Red Mountain 2010, Red Mountain Washington 2010 46.00 The history of Hedges Family Estate begins in June of 1976, with the marriage of Tom Hedges and Anne-Marie Liégeois in a 12th century church in Champagne, France. The convergence of separate cultural upbringings provides a strong backdrop for creating a modern day, but traditionally inspired wine estate. This old world style of Syrah showcases more earth and spice character than fruit. It's intensely perfumed and big in the mouth with notes of dried herb, bacon, cigar, black licorice, and black fruit. Notes of smoke, anise, white pepper and sage emerge on the long, powerful, finish. It should develop well for another decade or so. A stunning complement to grilled steak or roasted lamb. 609 Langtry Serpentine Meadow Petite Sirah, Guenoc Valley CA 2007 60.00 “This is a gorgeous young Petite Sirah. Most people will probably drink it soon, because although it’s tannic, it’s tremendously ripe in blackberries, cherries, chocolate and sweet oak, making it irresistibly delicious. But it should be drinkable for a very long time, slowly changing its profile and becoming ever more delicate.” 93 WE 394 K Vintners “The Deal” Sundance Vineyard Syrah, Wahluke Slope, WA 2010 68.00 Located at the base of the Blue Mountains in Walla Walla (Washington State), Charles Smith opened his first winery, K Vintners, in December of 2001. The first release, 1999 K Syrah from Walla Walla Valley, initiated the style of winemaking that Charles continues today: small lots of single vineyard Syrahs and field blends of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo and Viognier, all of which are hand-picked, foot-stomped, fermented with naturally occurring yeasts Version 2.7- 12.13 26 and basket pressed. Sundance is one of the oldest vineyards on the Wahluke Slope, planted in 1997. The site is topsoil over gravel, sand and broken down basalt with more caliche than other sites in the Wahluke. The vineyard, because of its aspect, is also a later ripening site allowing for great concentration. 320 Hunnicutt “Cutt” Fearless Red, Napa Valley CA 2009 75.00 Hunnicutt is a family owned and operated winery established in 2001 with a focus on Zinfandel, Cabernet, and Chardonnay. In 2007, they introduced the CUTT label, which focuses on other varieties. The 09 Fearless Red is a well thought out blend of 64% Petite Sirah, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Zinfandel and it sits like the dark of night in your glass. Black cherries, floral arrangement, warm toasty nuts, oak and black currant blend effortlessly with mouth watering aromas. Warm and welcoming flavors of black cherry, cherry tobacco, vanilla and dark chocolate blend with a mild peppery spice to provide you with a tasting experience that will knock you right back in your chair!” 583 Shafer “Relentless” Syrah, Napa Valley, California 2008 105.00 This wine honors long-time Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez and his relentless pursuit of quality. Sourced from a single ridgetop vineyard adjacent to the southern border of Stags Leap District, the grapes for Relentless are a “field blend” of Syrah and Petite Sirah. “The aromatics are full and distinct, with loads of dark berry and charcoal, then this unfolds touches of black cherry, raspberry and red and black licorice on the palate, sailing along and firming nicely on the finish. Shows all the muscle, density, richness and range of flavor found in many Shafer reds, yet takes it to another level in this vintage. The best Relentless yet. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Best from 2013 through 2023. 3,300 cases made.” 96 WS- #1 wine in Top 100 for 2012 584 Shafer “Relentless” Syrah, Napa Valley, California 2009 105.00 "Brimming with dark, rich berry, loamy earth, crushed rock and espresso. This is a powerful expression that is also tapered and sophisticated, ending with all kinds of subtle nuances that come alive on the finish. Syrah and Petite Sirah. Best from 2013 through 2024." 95 WS 585 Shafer “Relentless” Syrah, Napa Valley, California 2010 105.00 "The extraordinary 2010 Relentless (96% Syrah and 4% Petite Sirah) offers up notes of graphite, subtle wood charcoal, barbecue smoke, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit, and hints of spice and meat. This full-bodied, supple-textured, exceptionally rich Syrah already has a certain accessibility, but should age well for two decades." 97 WA, 95 WS and #72 Top 100 for 2013 414 Cayuse Syrah Walla Walla Valley “Cailloux” Vineyard, Washington 2008 125.00 Cayuse is really the story of Christophe Baron, a man whose ancestry dates back to 1677 in the Champagne region of France, where he was born and grew up. During his travels as a winemaker in the 80’s, Christophe came upon an open field littered with acres of softball-sized stones while strolling through the Walla Walla (Washington State) countryside with a friend. While others saw ten acres of the Walla Walla Valley’s worst farmland, he saw only enormous potential. And although many thought he was crazy, he purchased the property and planted his first vineyard in 1997. He called the venture Cayuse Vineyards, after a Native American tribe whose name was derived from the French word “cailloux”—which means “stones.” In the decade since, it has grown to seven vineyards, soon to be eight, encompassing more than 55 acres. What was considered by many a foolish gamble on that field of stones has been rewarded year after year with some of the most acclaimed wines in not only the region—but in the nation. His wines may be some of the most brilliant examples of Syrah on the planet. “The 2008 Cailloux Vineyard Syrah contains 4% Viognier. Expressive game, bacon, and blueberry aromas are given uplift by the Viognier component. This savory, rich, lengthy Syrah can be enjoyed now and over the next 10-12 years.” 97 WA Version 2.7- 12.13 27 652 Arietta “Variation One”, Napa Valley, California 2006 145.00 “Some of California’s more innovative wines emerge from proprietor Fritz Hatton, the well-known auctioneer who is also a classical pianist. Hatton has been expanding his portfolio with each new vintage, and it appears his blended cuvees turn out more interesting than the varietal wines. The most interesting blend is the co-fermented version of Syrah and Merlot, the Variation One. The 2006 Variation One, a blend of 55% Syrah and the rest Merlot (fermented together), has a production of merely 500 cases. It is dense purple-hued and exhibits notes of asphalt, chocolate, blackberries, and forest floor, and an extravagantly rich, full-bodied style with none of the noticeable tannin found in some of the other 2006s. This broad, savory, complex wine should provide provocative drinking over the next 15 or more years.” – Robert Parker- 93 WA – 95 ST 432 Cayuse Syrah Walla Walla Valley “Armada” Vineyard, Washington 2008 170.00 “The 2008Armada Vineyard Syrah takes the longest to come around according to Christophe Baron. It was aged in puncheon for 22 months. Smoked meat, game, Asian spices, lavender, and blueberry are just some of the scents composing the wine’s aromatic array. In the glass it opens to reveal a pure, rich, elegant but powerful wine with a 60-second finish. It, too, will drink nicely for 10-12 years. I’m a bit cautious on my aging potential estimates because of the lack of a track record, but 10-12 years is a certainty in a cold cellar.” 98 WA French Red Wines -Burgundy 327 Louis Jadot Savigny-Les-Beaune La Dominodes 2006 65.00 "All silk and refinement, this red packs red cherry, currant and mineral notes. There's tension, and the tannins are present and resonant now, but this should come together with a little time. Best from 2011 through 2018. 200 cases imported." 90 WS – 91 WA 337 Vincent Girardin Volnay Les Santenots 2006 79.00 “Offers plenty of oak, yet there's substantial sweet fruit to match. Pure cherry, black currant and mineral notes ride the supple texture as this picks up some firm tannins on the finish. Reminds me of 2005 in quality. Drink now through 2022. 150 cases imported.” 92 WS - Bordeaux 448 Chateau Faizeau Vieilles Vignes, Montagne St. Emilion 2009 49.00 “Another winner from these old vines (mostly Merlot) is the 2009 Chateau Faizeau Vieilles Vignes, from the Raynaud family that owns La Croix de Gay and La Fleur de Gay in Pomerol. A major sleeper of the vintage and one of the best wines ever from Faizeau, this wine displays an abundance of black currant, black cherry and smoky, earthy fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel, silky tannins, low acidity, and a long finish. A big-time over-achiever, it should drink well for up to a decade.” 90 WA 580 Clos des Jacobins, St. Emilion 2009 98.00 “The blend for the 2009 is mostly Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc, but hit over 14.5% natural alcohol. This is a big, chewy wine made under the guidance of Hubert de Bouard. Dense ruby/purple, with notes of blackberry and cassis as well as some hints of barbecue smoke, underbrush and toasty oak, this thick, dense and unctuously textured, low-acid wine is a sleeper of the vintage and the best Clos des Jacobins since the famous 1982. Drink it over the next 20-25 years.” 93 WA Version 2.7- 12.13 28 419 Château Boyd-Cantenac Margaux 2005 115.00 “This chateau, which is often under the radar (production is only 5,500-6,000 cases), has fashioned a terrific, inky/blue/purple-hued 2005 with a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, creme de cassis, pain grille, and blueberries. Powerful and concentrated with full-bodied richness, stunning purity, and a tannic, 40+-second finish, this beauty requires patience. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030+.” 92 WA 406 Château Cos-D'Estournel St.-Estèphe 2004 197.00 “A beautiful example of the vintage, proprietor Michel Reybier and his top-notch winemaker, JeanGuillaume Prats, have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length, it should be at its finest between 2009 and 2020+.”--Notes from Wine Advocate #171. “Loads of currant and blackberry, with hints of Indian spices. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Round and generous for the vintage. Best after 2011.” 94 pts Wine Spectator 350 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Pauillac 2005 215.00 “The brilliant 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits classic Pauillac aromas and flavors of creme de cassis along with stony/floral notes. Proprietor Xavier Borie has created a wine that should rival the brilliant 1982, 1990, 1996, and 2000. Full-bodied with sweet tannin and superb length (a 40+ second finish), the purity of this beauty’s black currant fruit is something to behold. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.” 95 WA - Rhone 466 Domaine Galevan Chateauneuf-du-Pape, 2010 69.00 “A microscopic estate owned by Coralie Goumarre, Domaine Galevan was established remarkably, in 1780, but the first estate-bottled wine did not emerge until 1968. The 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape is one of the finest traditional cuvees I have tasted as well as a sleeper of the vintage. Made from 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre from 55-year-old vines, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stunning perfume of crème de cassis, kirsch, incense, licorice and a vague notion of beef blood and roasted Provencal herbs. All of the fruit comes from vines planted in the northern end of the appellation. This exquisite, full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should drink well for 15 or more years. It is a major star of the vintage, and is reasonably priced as well.” 95 WA 566 St. Cosme Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2010 90.00 “A brilliant wine in a superb vintage, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape checks in as a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and 10% Cinsault that comes mostly from the famed La Crau lieu dit (small part from Valori). Seeing 24 months in barrel, it’s a deep, concentrated and meaty effort that oozes notions of black fruits, licorice, lavender and mulled spices on both the nose and palate. Dense, chewy and full-bodied, it is still backwards and tight, with some upside. Give it another year or two and enjoy over the following decade. Drink 2015-2025.” 94 WA Spanish Red Wines 373 Bodegas Ateca Honoro Vera Garnacha, Calatayud 2012 24.00 “Inky ruby. Dark berry liqueur and mocha on the nose, with complicating notes of licorice and sassafras. Sappy blueberry and blackberry flavors show very good depth and pick up a spicy quality with air. Finishes with good breadth, supple tannins and lingering smokiness.” 89 points Tanzer Version 2.7- 12.13 29 467 Bodegas Atalaya “La Atalaya”, Almansa 2010 32.00 “Inky purple. Deeply perfumed nose features heady scents of dark berry preserves, violet and licorice. Sweet and perfumed in the mouth, with a spicy kick to the intense blackberry and floral pastille flavors. Clings and clings, with an exotic floral nuance carrying through the finish.”91 Stephen Tanzer’s IWC 627 Bodegas Lan Rioja Riserva, Rioja 2007 34.00 “The 2007 Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo that is aged in American and French oak for at least 15 months. It has a generous nose of red cherries, over-ripe oranges and Indian ink that is attractive, if not overly complex. The palate is rounded and slightly leathery on the entry. It constitutes a sedate, mellow Reserva that has a classical personality. There is nothing wrong with that and I appreciate the balance and refinement on the off-dry finish. Drink now-2020.” 91 WA 468 Bodegas Ateca Atteca, Calatayud 2011 38.00 "Glass-staining ruby. Ripe red berries and fresh rose on the oak-spiced nose. Silky and sweet, offering vibrant raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Zesty mineral and cracked pepper notes add energy to the long, spicy, red fruit-dominated finish.” 90 IWC 374 Castillo Perelada Finca Malaveïna, Emporda, Catalonia, Spain 2008 48.00 “The 2008 Finca Malaveina is sourced from red clay slopes with pebbles that facilitate drainage. It is a blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Syrah and Garnacha aged for 16 months in new Bordeaux barrels. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it gives up aromas of toasty oak, mineral, herbs, smoky black fruit, and lavender. More structure on the palate than the other single vineyard wines, it will reward 3-4 years of cellaring. This dense, lengthy effort will be at its best from 2015 to 2023.” 90 WA 377 348 Bodegas el Nido “Clio”, Jumilla, Spain 2010 68.00 Bodegas el Nido “Clio”, Jumilla, Spain 2011 71.00 Bodegas El Nido is a joint venture between importer Jorge Ordoñez, Miguel Gil of Bodegas Juan Gil (another notable Jumilla producer) and Australian winemaker Chris Ringland. The winery produces two wines that speak to both the past and the future of winemaking in Spain’s arid Jumilla region. Monastrell (called Mourvèdre in France) is Jumilla’s dominant red varietal, and the hearty vines yield only tiny amounts of intense fruit. Clio, a blend of 70% old-vine Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a nod to the traditional wines of the region (in Greek mythology Clio is the muse of history). El Nido, the flagship wine, is composed of the same grapes in reverse proportion - 70% Cab, 30% Monastrell - and represents the growing popularity of international varietals. Both wines are highly sought after by collectors year after year. The International Wine Report scored the wine 94 points and it was ranked #19 in their Top 50 Wines of 2012 376 Cellers Capafons-Ossó Mas de Masos, Priorat, Spain 2002 80.00 Mas de Masos is a high quality wine produced in the 60 year-old, low producing vineyard of the same name. The grape varieties grown in this vineyard are Garnacha, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine possesses a dark cherry color with an aroma of ripe berries, mountain herbs and minerals. At first taste, the wine is lively and viscous with round, fine tannins that finish in perfect balance. With each passing minute, the wine continues to evolve in the glass, producing notes of concentrated dark fruits, dark chocolate and soft minerals. 35% Garnacha peluda, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Garnacha pais, 10% Cariñena, 5% Syrah. “Licorice, lilac and mineral notes accent blackberry and cassis fruit in this dense red. Well-integrated, muscular tannins.” 94 WS Version 2.7- 12.13 30 608 Bodegas Mancuso Garnacha Vino de la Tierra Valdejalon 2005 90.00 Vinedos del Mancuso is a new wine project in Aragon started a few years ago by two enthusiastic enologists, Carlos San Pedro and Jorge Navascues. They bought five vineyards (20 acres) in the obscure region of Valdejalon (between Calatayud, Carinena, and Rioja) planted between 2,500 and 2,950 feet above sea level, with very old ungrafted Garnacha vines, in broken slate over bedrock. “The 2005 Mancuso was aged for 14 months in new French oak. It offers up a superb bouquet of toasty new oak, pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent, rich, and complex on the palate, this full-bodied wine has tons of flavor, nicely concealed ripe tannin, and a long, fruit-filled finish. Cellar it for 6-8 years and drink it from 2016 to 2030.” 96 WA Southern Hemisphere Red Australia 404 Paringa Shiraz, South Australia 2011 26.00 The Paringa vineyard is set on about 1700 acres of prime Riverlands property about 150 miles northeast of Adelaide in South Australia. The rainfall in the region is quite low but the Paringa property abuts the historic River Murray so they have a convenient source of water for the vineyard's drip irrigation system. “Supple, polished and appealing for its dark, brooding, licoriceaccented boysenberry pie flavors, complete with baked dough notes on the enticing finish. Drink now through 2014.” 89 points WS 415 Peter Lehmann “Clancy’s Red”, Barossa Valley 2009 30.00 Successive vintages of Clancy's have gained major Australian, American and UK recognition for giving a top-quality red wine at a very fair price. Matured 11 months in American oak, 60% new, The Boxer Shiraz gives a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves and mocha plus an undercurrent of vanilla and cedar. The palate is very generously fruited, offering a whopping mouthful of spiced blackberry flavors with a low to medium level of silky tannins, enlivening acid and a long finish. 567 610 Mollydooker “Two Left Feet”, South Australia 2011 92WS 45.00 Mollydooker “Two Left Feet”, South Australia 2012 90WA 45.00 This blend of predominantly Shiraz, with Cabernet and Merlot in the mix, has been and continues to be our favorite of the entry level Mollydookers. It typically exhibits intense fruit, in both aroma and on the palate, and has good structure and a long finish to boot. But what makes it the most impressive of the starters for Mollydooker is its wonderful balance. Perhaps a bit less intense than the Boxer and a touch more round and fuller than the Maitre’d, the Two Left Feet seems to find the best in common ground of the entry wines to the portfolio. 379 Two Hands “Gnarly Dudes” Shiraz, Barossa Valley 2009 49.00 “Supple, fleshy, silky and generous with its fresh-tasting plum, blueberry and currant fruit, this red picks up welcome hints of roast meat and spice as the finish lingers easily. The grapes were grown on the Joppich and Birchmore vineyards in Langhorne Creek and the Kirwin and Mollydooker vineyards in McLaren Vale. Barrel fermented and matured in 70% new and 30% one year old American oak. This has a wonderful open texture to let the flavors sing." 92 WS 390 John Duval Plexus GSM, Barossa Valley 2009 59.00 “Deep garnet colored with a hint of purple, the 2009 Plexus Shiraz Grenache gives notes of warm mulberries, kirsch and black tea with hints of Indian spices, fenugreek, cumin seed and dusty earth. Full bodied with a great concentration of opulent fruit, it has a medium level of silky tannins and lively acid to support, finishing long and harmonious. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2019+.” 93 WA 399 Clarendon Hills Brookman Merlot, McLaren Vale 2005 65.00 Clarendon Hills is situated 25 miles south of Adelaide, and is surrounded by vineyards largely populated by old bush vines. The bush vines are dry-farmed and hand-harvested, and the grapes go into 100% varietal wines designated by vineyard of origin. The winery practices are old-school, with a warm fermentation and extended maceration, which results in deeply colored, often turbocharged wines. “Plush, intense and vivid in flavor, this is aromatic with herbal cherry and currant character, leading into ripe fruit that's balanced with creamy, spicy, chocolate-tinged oak notes. A wine of great presence and length. Powerful, but not even close to being over the top. Drink now through 2015. 500 cases imported.” 94 WS 340 Mollydooker Shiraz “Carnival of Love”, McLaren Vale 2009 90.00 “Dense and chewy, but after an initial hit this backs off to let the gorgeous smoke-tinged black cherry, mulberry, dried tomato and tomato leaf flavors emerge at an almost leisurely pace. There's a sense of refinement underneath the raw power, and the finish holds on expressively. Drink now through 2018. 3,786 cases made.” 94 WS 351 Mollydooker Shiraz “Carnival of Love”, McLaren Vale 2011 90.00 “Dense, deep and complex, offering a cascade of cherry, blueberry and clotted cream flavors, with a whole range of spices on a plush texture. Very deep garnet purple colored, it gives intense warm blackberry, choco-mint, smoked bacon and marmite-toast aromas with nuances of coffee, roasted nuts and vanilla. Floral notes of violets and potpourri emerge after a few minutes. Very rich, very crisp, concentrated and full, there’s a good backbone of firm, very fine tannins and crisp acid leading into the very long and layered finish. It ranks with finest Syrahs I have tasted from South America.” 94 WA Version 2.7- 12.13 33 329 Viña Montes Purple Angel, Rapel Valley Chile 2010 93.00 “A dark, ambitious red, with ample toast and mocha to the macerated plum skin, dark cherry and grilled fig fruit that pumps out layers of humus, iron and olive paste before the fruit returns for an encore on the finish. The long finish has nice drive, with the loam edge stretching out. This has the poise and balance for cellaring. Drink now through 2017. 8,900 cases made. " 93 WS 385 Viña Montes Alpha M Santa Cruz, Rapel Valley Chile 2010 125.00 “Beautifully concentrated, showing a floral undertone to the rich yet racy wild berry, cassis and damson plum skin fruit character that's tightly wound around fine tannins. The finish is long and compact, but needs time in the cellar to fully shine. Best from 2014 through 2020. 500 cases imported.” Highly Recommended 96 WS Argentina 354 Bodega Séptima Malbec, Mendoza 2012 26.00 “Septima is owned by Codorníu of Spain, and it hit the market solidly in 2002, disappeared for a couple of years, and now is back with a great Best Buy. A powerhouse Malbec and maybe the best Ultra to date." 92 WE 358 Bodega Norton “Privada” Estate Reserve, Mendoza 2010 40.00 “A dense, smoky red, showing a creamy edge to the spicy kirsch, plum sauce and grilled fig notes that mingle with hints of baking spice and medium tannins. Juicy yet structured, with a mineral edge to the long, savory finish.” 92 WS 413 Bodegas Renacer+Allegrini Enamore, Mendoza 2011 49.00 This is a true collaboration between Allegrini, a renowned Italian producer of Amarone, and Bodega Renacer, a relatively new producer of high quality Argentine wines. The wine is produced Version 2.7- 12.13 34 like an Amarone; dried grapes, prolonged fermentation, and barrique aging. The wine is composed of 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Bonarda aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak. It is a full-bodied, layered, sweet, and densely packed offering that has been nothing short of stellar for three vintages running. 470 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Alta, Mendoza 2009 86.00 “ The 2009 Alta Catena Malbec comes from the Angelica, La Piramide, Nicasia and Adrianna Vineyards and undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel, then is aged in French oak, 50% new, for 18 months. It offers a gorgeous, pure, floral bouquet with ripe pomegranate and wild strawberry imbued with superb minerality and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a tense, almost broody entry. It is a classic Malbec, one you might almost think came from the Old World, underpinned by great structure and a sense of masculinity. Yet it is superbly balanced with plenty of ripe, earthy black fruit laced with tar and tobacco towards the long, rather aristocratic finish. Excellent. Drink 2014-2025.” 94 points WA- 622 Achával-Ferrer Finca Bella Vista, Mendoza 2007 155.00 This is one of Achaval’s single vineyard malbecs, which can be considered as some of the best wines of all Argentina. Very collectible and enormously complex. “The 2007 Finca Bella Vista is the first bottling of this cuvee since the 2004 vintage because 2005 and 2006 were wiped out by hail. The Bella Vista vineyard was planted in 1910 with yields for this wine at a miniscule 0.75 tons per acre. The wine was aged for 15 months in 100% new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers up an alluring bouquet of smoke, scorched earth, incense, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied, velvety-textured, and surprisingly forward, this voluptuous effort has gobs of layered sweet fruit, earth and spice notes, plenty of concealed fine grained tannin, and a lengthy finish. The temptation will be to drink this hedonistic effort without delay. However, it will reward extended cellaring and should be at its best from 2013 to 2022.” 96 WA 625 Achával-Ferrer Finca Bella Vista, Mendoza 2010 155.00 This is one of Achaval’s single vineyard malbecs, which can be considered as some of the best wines of all Argentina. It displays a superb perfume of pain grille, spice box, truffle, wild flowers, black cherry, and black currant. Rich, layered, dense, and complex, it, too, combines elegance and power. Chardonnay 160 Noble Vines Single Vineyard 446 Chardonnay, Monterey County, CA 2011 28.00 The 2011 Noble Vines 446 Chardonnay is a single vineyard, single vineyard section, single Chardonnay grape clone wine, that may just be the best value on the market. Nobles Vines is one of the many labels produced by Delicato Family Vineyards and the grapes are sourced from Block 46 of Delicato Family Vineyards 5,000 acre San Bernabe Vineyard. The 446 has many features you rarely find in an under $20 retail wine, 1) it is a single vineyard wine, 2) it is a single clone wine (Martini clone FPS 04), and 3) it is possibly a single block of the vineyard, Block 46 (the clone is Clone 4 and the Block is 46, hence the name 446 Chardonnay). The wine is truly stunning with regards to balance and the moderate use of oak, which is only there to compliment, not overpower, the vibrant fruit. 104 J. Lohr Arroyo Vista Chardonnay, Arroyo Seco AVA, Monterey 2011 33.00 Bright, pale yellow color with youthful hues, the 2011 Arroyo Vista Chardonnay has aromas of baked apple, d’Anjou pear, and lime, with floral honeysuckle undertones. The Burgundian winemaking techniques, including alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel with lees stirring and extended aging, contribute a complex bouquet of toasted bread, lime custard, caramel and toasted hazelnuts. A rich and silky chardonnay with complex aromas and flavors, balanced by palate cleansing acidity. 107 Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay, Russian River Ranches, Monterey 2012 36.00 Russian River Ranches is a cuvée crafted from several estate vineyards, each contributing its own distinct personality. Pretty aromas of jasmine and rose petal give way to tropical fruits like pineapple and mango. Roasted hazelnut joins nougat and almond butter, finishing with a touch of lime and lychee. Medium-weight and clean with a wonderful acid backbone, the wine expands in the glass, offering up grapefruit, lemon, pear and kumquat with subtle vanilla bean and herbal mushroom. The lingering finish displays hints of minerality, along with apple, lime and a surprising kiss of strawberry. A market basket of aromas and flavors. 159 Mer Soleil “Silver” Unoaked Chardonnay, Santa Lucia Highlands, CA 2011 36.00 This is Mer Soleil’s Unoaked Chardonnay. “Light gold. High-pitched aromas of green apple, lemon zest and white flowers. Dry and racy on entry, then plumper in the middle, offering juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors that show a refreshingly bitter quality. Finishes taut and nervy, with good clarity and spicy persistence. No excess fat here."89 Points-International Wine Cellar 111 Talbott "Logan" Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay, CA 2012 44.00 “Light, bright yellow. Musky pear skin, peach pit and citrus pith on the fragrant, leesy nose. On the palate, spicy orchard and pit fruit flavors and sweeter honeydew and tangerine qualities gain strength with air. Shows very good energy and lift, with a buttery nuance adding breadth. Closes silky and long, with resonating spiciness and lingering sweet citrus fruit qualities. This elegant wine has the balance to repay a little patience.” 90 IWC Version 2.7- 12.13 36 118 Ancien Chardonnay, Carneros CA 2011 58.00 Announced by rich aromatics of melon, pear, and fig accented with Granny Smith apples and tangerine. Chalky, wet stone and graphite add nuance, topped with decadent creme brulee and brioche. Intense palate weight and luscious fruit tannins fill the mid-palate,finishing mouth-filling minerality. Citrus flavors are intermixed with peaches and cream and citron notes and just a hint of pineapple. Cardamom, and toasty biscotti notes, liven the palate, leading into the finish which is long, layered, and complex. The tannins, minerality, and acidity that are the calling card of wellraised, true Old Wente Chardonnay are in full display. 181 Beringer Private Reserve Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2011 65.00 No winery or vineyard more thoroughly embodies the timeless appeal and seductive flavor of Napa Valley than Beringer Vineyards, Napa's benchmark producer since the establishment of the vineyard in 1876. For many years the Chardonnay Private Reserve has been one of the benchmarks for California style. Made in a rich, lush style, with tremendous complexity and power, it is an unabashedly Californian take on Chardonnay. Barrel fermentation adds the vanilla notes and mouthfeel that have made this wine a classic. 119 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2010 70.00 Peter and Su Hua Newton purchased one square mile of tumbling slopes high up on Spring Mountain overlooking St. Helena in 1977. The Estate was planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Merlot thrives in a land which is rocky mixed with clay beneath the surface, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot like an impoverished soil, and Cabernet Sauvignon is happy in stony loam. The mountainous slopes of the vineyards not only have these soils, but also a full range of exposures. Spring Mountain provides the vines get all the sunlight they need without any baking heat stress. "Rich and seamless, with layers of crème brûlée, baked pie, honeysuckle and tangerine. A remarkably complex and elegantly styled wine." 92 WA 165 Shafer Vineyards “Red Shoulder Ranch”, Napa Valley 2011 77.00 Shafer's single-vineyard Carneros-grown Chardonnay is produced from small-clustered clones of grapes selected for their low yields and distinctive flavors. Fermentation takes place within individual oak and stainless steel barrels using native yeasts. The wine matures on the lees for 14 months and since it undergoes no malolactic fermentation this Chardonnay retains a lively natural acidity. The vineyard is named for its Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey, who play an important role in Shafer's natural farming practices. “Bright yellow. Cool, almost Chablis-like aromas of lime, white pepper, nettles, mint and menthol, plus a savory whiff of chicken broth. Dense and intensely flavored, with superb acidity and penetrating minerality giving this wine an amazingly racy quality for its 14.8% alcohol. The long, rising finish features terrific lingering spice character. My favorite chardonnay to date from Shafer, this beauty offers a great combination of weight and intensity." 94 IWC Other American Whites 152 Conundrum, California 2012 32.00 “From our first vintage, 1989, we were determined to make a dramatically different white-wine blend that would surpass the scope of single-varietal wines.” So far, Conundrum has been a magical success with a cult following that few other wines enjoy. Conundrum is a non-traditional blend of several grape varietals from many different areas; the foundation is formed by Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Muscat Canelli. Small amounts of Semillon and Viognier are then added for their spicy character. A terrific new world wine. Version 2.7- 12.13 37 166 Chateau Ste. Michelle “Eroica” Riesling, Washington State 2012 36.00 Eroica is the result of a special partnership of German and American wine makers to craft an extraordinary Riesling from Washington State grapes. This is more than a blend of two estates, Dr. Loosen from the Mosel and Chateau Ste. Michelle from the Columbia Valley: It is an intermingling of Old World and New World philosophy and technique. Named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica is truly a concert of Old World and New World Riesling. “…one of the top Rieslings I was able to taste from Washington, the 2012 Riesling Eroica offers up racy, well-defined aromas and flavors of star fruit, citrus rind, green apple and edgy minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, offdry through the mid-palate and clean and fresh on the finish, it’s a delicious, textbook Riesling that would be a prefect meal starter or to pair up with spicier fare." 91 WA Whites from around the World Italian White 106 Cantina Nals Magreid Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige DOC 2011 26.00 Unique microclimate and morainic, alluvial soil endow this varietal with intrinsic traits seldom achieved: pear, flinty and mineral notes, creamy texture. The grapes are vinified and aged in stainless steel, but to ensure further complexity and depth, the wine initially goes through bâtonnage on the skins for 4-5 months. 114 Planeta La Segreta Bianco, Sicily IGT 2010 28.00 Since their first plantings in 1985, Planeta has become one of the top producers of quality wines from Sicily. Blending indigenous Sicilian varietals with international varietals has yielded some spectacular wines with much acclaim. The La Segreta Bianco shows ripe and exotic flavors with apple and cream and hints of pineapple. 101 Fontaleoni Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Tuscany DOCG 2012 33.00 “Pale straw-green. Fresh citrus and herb aromas. Classically dry and linear, with intense flavors of lemon, quince and fresh herbs carrying through to the long, saline finish. I like this wine's purity and sharply chiseled delivery of aromas and flavors. A standout entry-level vernaccia.” -90 IWC 100 Suavia Soave Classico Superiore, Veneto DOC 2011 34.00 “Floral on the nose, but dry and stony on the palate, featuring flavors of green melon, pear, yellow apple and spice. Its taste is full on the palate, with notes of minerals and an intense and persistent structure. 109 Broglia Gavi di Gavi “La Meirana”, Piedmont DOCG 2010 38.00 “The 2010 Gavi di Gavi La Meirana comes together beautifully in the glass, with expressive yellow peaches, apricots, mint and light floral honey. This is an especially beautiful, textured white loaded with class and personality. The inviting, vibrant finish refreshes the palate nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.” 89 WA 170 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, Trentino Alto Adige DOC 2012 44.00 Santa Margherita was the first company to vinify the pinkish Pinot Grigio grapes as white wine. This dry white wine is pale straw-yellow in color. The clean, intense aroma and dry flavour with Version 2.7- 12.13 38 pleasant golden apple aftertaste make Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a wine of great character and versatility. German White 203 Schmitt Söhne Piesporter Michelsberg Spätlese QBA, Mosel, 2012 26.00 Spätlese in German refers to “late harvest”. The late harvest grapes are riper, contain more sugar, and produce wines that are rich and sweet. "Piesporter Michelsberg QbA is a beautifully fragrant, medium-bodied wine with upfront fruit that continues to develop on the palate. Made from Riesling and Müller-Thurgau grapes, hints of peaches and green apples are balanced perfectly with crisp acidity to provide a clean and fresh finish.” 112 St.-Urbans-Hof Riesling QbA, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer 2011 28.00 “Fresh Jonagold and McIntosh apple aromas and flavors, with a hint of black currant leaf, mark this juicy, vibrant white, which is balanced, leaving a mouthwatering impression. Wet stone, passion fruit and oyster shell accents add interest, with bright acidity highlighting the vivid finish. Another outstanding Sauvignon from a perennial success. Drink now.” 91 WS 105 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand 2012 46.00 Cloudy Bay was established in 1985 and its first Sauvignon Blanc was a turning point for the New Zealand wine industry - an iconic wine was born, people just couldn't get enough (and still can't) of this brave, clean, zingy, incredibly aromatic wine. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was launched, and Cloudy Bay propelled the grape variety and New Zealand into the limelight. For many, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc has become the standard bearer for the variety. “The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc opens with intense grapefruit, passion fruit and green mango notes and touches of pineapple and fresh sage. Medium-bodied with a fair amount of viscosity to the texture, it has lively acid and a long finish. Drinking well now, it should keep to 2014+ " 90pts Wine Advocate French White 110 Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Grand Cru Saering, Alsace 2008 51.00 “Schlumberger’s practice of aging wine before release means that this is a Riesling well on the way to impressive maturity. It is poised, with an aroma of currant and hints of toast and flower. While drinkable now, this would certainly be worth aging for several more years.” 93 WE 201 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Butteaux, Burgundy 2010 64.00 “The 2010 Chablis Butteaux is gorgeous. It shows none of the angularity of the 2011. Instead, layers of rich, intense fruit caress the palate in a seamless expression of the vintage that is striking. The Butteaux isn’t a hugely complex wine, but it has fabulous balance and plenty of juiciness. Today it comes across as relatively accessible within the context of the year. There is a lot of fruit, but less in the way of overt minerality.” 91 WA 202 Francois Carillon Chassagne Montrachet Macherelles, Burgundy 2010 97.00 “Carillon’s 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Macherelles is pure Chassagne in its rich, buttery fruit and oily texture. With time in the glass the wine’s minerality becomes more apparent, artfully buffering its more overt leanings. The Macherelles boasts stunning depth. The 2010 loses just a bit Version 2.7- 12.13 39 of persistence on the finish, but not enough to meaningfully detract from the immense pleasure it provides. Anticipated maturity: 2013+.” 92 WA South African White 103 Buitenverwachting “Bayten” Sauvignon Blanc, Constantia 2012 28.00 Buitenverwachting was part of the original Constantia estate founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Dutch Colony at the Cape. One of South Africa's premier estates, this beautiful farm is situated on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg Mountain, just south of Cape Town and a few miles from False Bay. Today under the guidance of current proprietor Lars Maack, the winery has earned a reputation as the source of some of South Africa's most exquisite, mineral-tinged white wines. Buitenverwachting is a Dutch word that means "beyond expectation." 90 pts WS Dessert Wines 513 Umberto Fiore Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont, Italy 2012 28.00 Umberto Fiore Moscato d'Asti is an aromatic semi-sparkling wine with half the carbonation of a typical sparkling wine. The wine has a fresh and crystalline vibrancy at the finish. 352 La Giaretta Recioto Classico della Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy 2005 (500ml) 55.00 The Recioto is a wine obtained from the same grape varieties as the Amarone (corvina, corvinona, rondinella), left to wither on wooden grids for a much longer period of time (until March), thus obtaining an optimum concentration of the must. It is a sweet wine, full-bodied, with a deep ruby red color and intense scents of cherry compote. 500 Inniskillin Riesling Icewine Vidal, Niagara, Canada 2007 (375ml) 80.00 Inniskillin Icewine, recognized as one of the world's great wines, is truly winter's gift to wine lovers. Harvested at the pinnacle of Canada's crisp winter, the grapes are naturally frozen on the vine and picked when the temperature drops to -10°C. Only a few drops of luscious nectar can be squeezed from each bunch, which is then expertly guided through fermentation to achieve the rich and alluring specialty wine known as Icewine. “There's incredible depth of both flavor and texture in this golden icewine from Inniskillin. Initially, it's rich and creamy on the tongue with notes of honey, waxy florals and apple. The, bright flashes of acidity bring forth tones of tangerine and Meyer lemon. Long and langourous on the finish, it's a gorgeous wine all around.” 92 WE Port 511 Taylor Fladgate 10 yr Tawny Port, Portugal 55.00 "It is my opinion that Taylor's tawny ports are the best of their type. Its sweet black mass of dark fruit and spice aromas leads to a character of immense depth, richness, and weight. Full-bodied, viscous, and almost impenetrable, this dense, backward port is powerful and exceptionally long in the finish. Possibly the most masculine Fonseca I’ve ever encountered, it coats the taster’s palate with licorice, jammy black fruits, and notes of chocolate that last for over a minute. This blockbuster will require at least three decades to fully blossom.” 96 points Wine Advocate 502 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2003, Portugal 145.00 “The 2003 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port improved each time I raised it to my nose or mouth. It displays a black color and a salty, graphite-laced nose packed with sweet black fruits that is reminiscent of a stellar vintage of Chateau Latour. With air, notes of molasses, burnt sugar, spices, and jammy plums emanate from the glass. Full-bodied, hugely dense, immensely rich, as well as thick, this behemoth is also amazingly balanced and harmonious. Raisins, molasses, licorice, black cherries, plums, and a distinctive note of violets are found in its complex, seamless character. Its interminable finish reveals additional notes of chocolate, kirsch, red as well as black currants, dark cherries, and rose blossoms. Armed with exceptional power, depth, and purity, this Taylor will proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest ever crafted by the Fladgate Partnership. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the leading candidate for the port of the vintage.
