O’Connor, Emeritus Administration dear friends, As if the disease of addiction isn’t complex enough, we’re now facing an epidemic of prescription drug abuse. It’s estimated that more than 6 million Americans are addicted to prescription drugs. The effects of prescription drug abuse on women are especially devastating because they often extend to their unborn children. A recent news story reported that prescription drug abuse is increasingly affecting newborns. The statistics are chilling: 10% of babies in West Virginia are born with prescription narcotics in their systems; on a national level, the number of babies born addicted to prescription drugs has increased so significantly that one doctor reported that she expects to treat 20 times the number of infants going through withdrawal as she did just five years ago. Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. ~ Albert Camus At the event, Cindy introduced a friend and a colleague in the fight against addiction, Melissa Weiksnar, who also lost a child to addiction. Melissa’s daughter, Amy, began her experimentation with marijuana, progressed to abusing prescription drugs, and eventually became addicted to heroin. Like Annie’s life, Amy’s was also cut short, depriving the world — and especially her family — of her kindness, creativity, and love. She was only 20 years old. Cindy Shapira’s call to action at our event this year couldn’t have come at a more critical time. As health and human services take a hit in the new State budget, the challenge is on. We, as a community, must ensure that individuals and families affected by substance use disorders receive the care they need. And through education and advocacy, we can work together to reduce the incidence of addiction in future generations. If you attended POWER PROMISES this year, you heard the moving words of our Honorary Chair, Cindy Shapira, who described the devastation of losing a daughter to a prescription drug overdose. Nearly three years ago, Cindy’s 23-year-old Warmest regards, daughter, Annie, tragically and prematurely left this world. Who knows what potential was wasted. We can only imagine, as Annie was a bright, talented young woman who surely would have Rosa Davis, MSW, ACSW made tremendous contributions to the world. For many of our clients, the news from the Governor’s office came as a shock. The $205 that many of our clients will no longer receive every month could mean forgoing necessities like personal hygiene products and co-pays for medications. For clients at POWER House, this is a particularly cruel blow as they don’t have the option of working longer hours because they are in full-time treatment. We need your help! If you would like to help our most vulnerable clients, please purchase gift cards from the businesses listed in small increments and send them to POWER’s Safety Net Emergency Campaign, 7501 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15208. POWER PROMISES ’12 was an event that those who attended will remember for a long time to come, thanks to our Honorary Chair Cindy Shapira and her friend Melissa Weiksnar, each of whom spoke lovingly of their daughters, Annie and Amy, who died too young from drug overdoses. Their words were powerful and emotional and a stark contrast to the stories of the three POWER graduates honored that evening. “We are humbled by Cindy’s and Melissa’s courage and determination to speak publicly about their pain in order to urge others to take action to end the epidemic of addiction,” stated Executive Director Rosa Davis. Emceed by KDKA anchor and POWER Advisory Council member Brenda Waters, POWER PROMISES was held for the first time at Rodef Shalom Congregation in Oakland, a new venue that received rave reviews from many of the nearly 400 attendees, as did the food prepared by Tallulah’s Catering. As always, the baskets and silent auction items were sought after by eager ticket buyers and bidders. The live auction, led with gusto by Tom Murphy, included an original acrylic painting – custom-made for POWER – by renowned Pittsburgh native artist Burton Morris. Cindy Shapira and Melissa Weiksnar Tom Murphy with Jon Burnett The Community Service Committee of the American Society of Interior Designers, Pittsburgh Chapter, accepted the Seeds of Hope Award presented by Rosa Davis. Rosa lauded the group for its devotion to POWER women as demonstrated by the time, creativity, and heart the members put into the refurbishment of POWER House, ensuring that the environment supports and enhances the treatment and the hard work of recovery. Seeds of Hope Awardees from ASID Photos by Renee Diehl Photography © 2012 With sponsorships totaling $93,250, nearly $155,000 was raised, netting just over $130,000, and making POWER PROMISES ’12 one of our most successful fundraising events to date! Many thanks to all who made the evening possible and memorable! board & staff news Congratulations to Dr. Judith R. Griggs, POWER board member, who received the 2012 Sister Thea Bowman Legacy Award on March 27 at the Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Education Foundation’s 16th Annual Scholarship Dinner. Shreve In Memory of… Thomas Barkley Gary Lewis Virginia Brovitz Stacy A. Brovitz and a wonderful childhood. But in high school it seemed to her that the kids using drugs and alcohol were the popular kids, and she wanted to be one of them. So, Tara says, “I got in and I fit in. And then I got hooked.” She started with alcohol and marijuana. After dropping out of school she began sniffing cocaine and heroin. Now the crowd she wanted to fit in with hung out on the streets and went to clubs, and she did the same. She had a son. When she wasn’t working, she and her son moved in with her grandmother. A pattern developed in which Tara would stop using, get a job, get an apartment, and do fine for a period of time. And then she’d relapse and lose it all. This went on for 24 years. Then, one day when she wasn’t using, someone suggested she go to POWER. When she arrived at POWER House she started to cry and one of the staff members hugged her. “I cried so much,” Tara said, “that the scarf she was wearing was wet. She held onto me until I settled down.” After that, Tara says, “There was no turning back.” Not that everything went smoothly right away. At first Tara was angry, defensive, and argumentative. She resented a therapist who wanted to “work you from the inside out,” and in the process made Tara face the truth. Now she says about the therapist, “That woman was a gift.” She started to like POWER House so much that she still jokes about wanting to rent a room there. Today Tara has a job that she loves, working with newborns who need medical care before they can go home. She made the Dean’s List at CCAC, where she got an associate’s degree in sociology. Her 7-year-old daughter splits her time between Tara’s and her sister’s house, and her 29-year-old son is, in Tara’s words, “My right-hand buddy.” She is active in Narcotics Anonymous, drives POWER House residents to meetings, and volunteers at non-profit organizations. She has four-and-a-half years clean. We are fortunate that Dr. Wes Sowers is our medical director and consulting psychiatrist. Dr. Sowers is a highly regarded and skilled physician who provides a critical component of our gender-responsive, trauma-sensitive care. Dr. Sowers and one of our therapists co-facilitate a Health and Medication Management group, which focuses on helping women understand their mental health needs and the possible side effects and proper use of medications they may be taking. Additional psychiatric services include medication checks, psychiatric assessments, and team consultations. Thanks to Dr. Sowers, POWER receives additional psychiatric support from University of Pittsburgh Medical School psychiatric residents. We feel fully confident when we say that psychiatric services at POWER are of the highest quality.
