The monthly EWI Houston Chapter meeting was held at One’s A Meal on February 11. At registration all attendees received a lovely bright red bandana. The event theme was Rodeo Round-Up and most of the attendees were in western attire, ready for some line dancing. The meeting was opened by President Lisa Teubner, representing LyondellBasell Industries. Lisa welcomed Ellen Ramsey, executive member representing Let It Fly and several guests: Coni Tierney, Jennifer Kasprzak, Craig Simmons, Analisa Smith, Demetra Delaney, Debbie Tullos, Bob Macdonald, Pam Young, Keisha Curtis, Karen Cryer, Cindy Herndon and Donna Gurney. Lisa thanked Nicky Servos of One’s A Meal, for the venue and delicious appetizers; Estelle Love, representing Continental Airlines and Rebecca Thompson, representing Bay Area Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, for organizing the event; Bergner and Johnson Design for the lovely floral arrangements; and Damon Pampolina, DJ, for wonderful entertainment. Stephanie Sisk Lester, representing Landry’s Restuarants, Inc. gave a wonderful invocation. Damon Pampolina, DJ, gave a special shout out to Ana Brown, representing Houston Chronicle, who is moving to San Diego for her husband’s job. Ana will be missed by all of us! Delynn Walker, representing Texas Southern University, conducted the door prize drawing with the great music clips provided by Damon Pampolina. DJ Damon kicked off Texas style line dancing. Most of the representatives were on the dance floor showing off their skills. Personally, I have proved to myself and everyone in the room I have no dancing skills, but I had tons of fun trying. Great company, great food, great entertainment, lots of laughter and fun. The event was a great success regardless of the rain and cold temperatures. April 8 Executives’ Night/Fundraiser The Corinthian May 13 EWISP Awards Program Hotel Derek The next Board of Directors meeting (for officers only) will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at LyondellBasell. DID YOU KNOW... EWInfo It is EWI’s policy for member firms to submit news items/advertisements for distribution in the weekly EWInfo so that membership is not inundated with emails. Please submit any items to Lisa Teubner, Dory Ward and Liz Norwood each Thursday by Noon for approval to include in Friday’s distribution. If your item is time-sensitive we will work with you to distribute in a timely fashion. Thank you for your cooperation. Name Badges Once the Hospitality Committee is notified of new representatives, a name badge is available at the registration table at the monthly meetings. Name badges for new representatives are blue and a permanent white badge is stored directly behind in the badge sleeve. Blue badges should be worn until new representatives feel comfortable they have met the majority of membership. There is no time limit for how long you wear the blue badge. Any representative who needs a replacement badge should contact Rosemary Powers, Hospitality Chair, at rpowers@wellsfargo.com or let someone know at the registration table at a monthly meeting. It is important that you wear your name badge at every function. ewihouston.org Arlene Nowak, Metromarketing Services, Inc.; Dory Ward, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Sanela Tomic, Pam Young and Kori Peters, BMC Software, Inc. Have You Seen Your Zoo Lately? Operated by the not-for-profit Houston Zoo, Inc., the Houston Zoo is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species, the provision of engaging educational opportunities and the creation of stimulating exhibits that broaden the experiences of our guests and encourage their curiosity. Recognized by Parents magazine as one of the Ten Best Zoos for Kids, the Houston Zoo is one of the most visited zoos in the nation, welcoming more than 1.7 million visitors each year. More than 30,000 families are members of the Houston Zoo. Here’s What’s Happening at the Houston Zoo On September 10, 2009 as the boom of African drums echoed across a wooded landscape, the Houston Zoo began transforming a 6.5 acre site in the heart of the national’s fourth largest city into an extraordinary adventure—The African Forest. Scheduled to open in December 2010, The African Forest at the Houston Zoo will vividly recreate an awe-inspiring wilderness habitat featuring chimpanzees, rhinos, and giraffes in an environment reminiscent of the forest landscape of western equatorial Africa. Exciting “immersion” exhibits with virtually invisible barriers between guests and the animals will take visitors on an entertaining journey through one of the world’s most mysterious and beautiful places. The Houston Zoo’s jaguar exhibit has undergone some incredible renovations in the past few months. Kam Balam and Cocoy, our two jaguars, now have more space, a new waterfall, and a new pool thanks to these upgrades. Jaguars are great simmers—so they’ll enjoy the new waterplay aspects of their exhibit. Guests now have a much clearer viewing area. Previously guests had to look through glass panels, but now the exhibit is fences with easy-to-seethrough mesh wiring, similar to the small cats exhibit we upgraded last year. We have some big, big news! Shanti, our 19-year-old female Asian elephant, is due to give birth this spring. And…26-year old Tess is expected to have a baby elephant in the fall! Great things are happening at the Houston Zoo in 2010. Two new baby elephants AND the grand opening of The African Forest will be tremendous additions to the Zoo. Later this year our Masai giraffes will move into a new exhibit and new barn when The African Forest opens to the public. When the giraffes move into their new home, we’ll begin to renovate our current Asian elephant exhibit to encompass the space where our giraffes currently live—just in time for when the new elephant babies start to grow up! In everything we do, we strive to create the most natural and comfortable environment for our animals so that Houston Zoo guests can get the most out of their visits and be inspired to protect wildlife. Visit www.houstonzoo.org for additional information on these and other happenings at the Zoo! Your ideas and interpersonal skills already have you “on deck” as a “Most Valuable Player,” but your participation in a leadership role could be a GRAND SLAM! The 2010-2011 Interest Surveys will be going out soon. This is the perfect place to get information about each committee and/or board position, so you can determine your interests to become an integral part of EWI. ewiconnect.com March 2010 | Page 21 Special Mention Dear Lisa, As you know, I am in the process of relocating to San Diego, California, to join my husband and unfortunately as a result of this I must submit my resignation to the EWI Houston Chapter. Although Bernie and I are very excited about our move and the opportunity it brings; for many reasons, it is very sad for us to leave Houston. Lisa, I want to express my deep appreciation for everyone in EWI. Through EWI, I have met so many amazing people. I have been blessed to be a part of the Houston Chapter and I am leaving with many special memories of the times we have shared. I will really miss EWI and The Houston Chronicle but I hope our paths will cross again some day. Maybe at LCAM if I am fortunate enough to be a part of the San Diego Chapter. Please feel free to share my note and email address (abb7685@yahoo.com) with everyone. I would love to hear from ya’ll.
