The long, lazy, warm, days of summer is the time of year for tearing
up single track on a mountain bike,
hiking challenging trails with spectacular views, or fighting and landing a fish with a rod. If you haven’t
had a chance to enjoy the fabulous
summer weather, we have some
great upcoming events for you. It’s
also an opportunity for you to keep
in touch will your fellow club members during the off season. We’re
off to another great start of fun summer events for the year.
A small but spirited group trekked
the streets of Berkeley on the Berkeley Rose Garden and Gourmet
Ghetto Hike on May 19th, highlighted by lunch at Alice Water’s
famed Chez Panisse restaurant.
Thanks to Charles Akers for hosting
this event. Buon Gusto! Food was
aplenty at our Post-Season Italian
Dinner on June 9th with nearly 50
members and guests in attendance.
We feasted on Chicken Marbella,
Salmon Piccata, homemade focaccia
sandwiches, spaghetti squash, and
tiramisu prepared by NSC’s finest
chefs. There was even a chocolate
fountain for dipping strawberries
and marshmallows. Grazie to Angie, Karen, Amy and David, Angela
and Stewart, and Quinie and Roger
for putting on a terrific event.

first NSC Board meeting this year,
we reviewed the Constitution, Board
Duties and Guidelines, and Policies
-- materials important in the running
our club. Also covered were the
steps in running a typical NSC
event. After these presentations, I
presented my vision for the club this
year.
The most critical issue facing our
club is declining membership. The
greatest impact of this is its effect
on our club’s ability to fill up the
weekend ski trips. It is very important for the club to have enough
“core” members to help fill up a bus
trip. To that end, we will continue
the Multi-Trip and Non-Member
discount programs for this year. We
will also be offering some new programs and information targeted at
people who want to try out skiing or
snowboarding for the first time. I
believe that some people feel they
have to be at least an intermediate
skier or snowboarder to join our
club. I hope to dispel this percep(Continued on page 13)

FALL CREEK HIKE IN FELTON - JUNE 24

The weather was perfect, the trees were beautiful and shady, the water
was rushing down the creek and everyone seemed to enjoy the 5 mile
hike to the abandoned lime kilns and barrel factory ruins of the early
20th century. For a hike so far away, the turnout was exceptionally
large at 25. This could have caused a problem squeezing everyone into
any of the various optional activities afterward, but there were enough
participants doing different variations that it all worked out.
After the hike, many took in wine tasting at Hallcrest Vineyards across
the street from the trail head (it was the only rest room facility nearby).
While enjoying the local Santa Cruz wines, we voted to make wine
tasting a tradition whenever possible after future NSC hikes.
After the wine tasting, seven of us fun-loving diehards dashed off to
view the beautiful Hakone Gardens in Saratoga. We made good time
making the drive to the Japanese Gardens and arrived at the beautiful
gardens with just 15 minutes to spare before closing.
Finally, Chez Sovan, a San Jose Cambodian restaurant, was the dinner
destination. Afterwards, we piled into the car content with the full day!

July 29—San Francisco Stairway Hike #4

The latest hike in our popular hike series samples the Marina, Cow Hollow and Pacific Heights districts. We will
meet at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts at the corner of Marina and Lyon (parking in the Exploratorium lot) at 10AM
with the usual layered clothing, camera, snacks and liquids and a little money for shopping and lunch. “Facilities” are
at the Palace and along some of the shopping streets. The length of the hike is expected to be less than 4 hours, but we
may spend time around the Palace grounds, shopping and taking in the scenery here and there. We will pass some to
the grandest homes in San Francisco and walk the fabulous Lyon St. stairs – surely the grandest in San Francisco (a
small portion of which is pictured below).

From the NSC Newsletter Editor’s Desk

Well it is 12:30AM on Monday morning before the July 2007 NSC newsletter gets shipped out and the brand new
editor is attempting to get his act together and get the final copy out the door…
And since I am now wielding the awesome power of this office, I have decided unilaterally to compose this inaugural
note from the NSC Newsletter Editor’s desk. Actually, the real reason why I am typing this article up is because I am
short one page worth of material!
Anyhow, I would like to introduce myself to the NSC readership and I am honored to be your 50th season’s Newsletter Editor. Can you imagine that? There has been nearly fifty years worth of this publication! Let’s see… 50 years
times 12 issues per year times about 12 pages (on average) per issue is on the order of 7200 pages of NSC reading
material! Fifty years is a real long time and I am glad that I can still say that I have existed less years then the NSC!
Although communications has changed quite a lot in the past half century with technological advancements such as
email and the Internet, the job of informing the NSC membership on what will happen and what has happened is still
vital to our membership. And it is for this important reason I have taken on this job as any perusal of our newsletter
archives will show that good communication is one of the main reasons why this organization has existed for nearly
fifty years.
Anyhow, here are some ideas that form my vision for this newsletter for the upcoming year.
In the spirit of this 50th year and the upcoming Golden Anniversary gala that will be held sometime next year, I am
going to republish articles of this publication that highlight the rich NSC history. Hopefully, I can find articles that
may make some current members blush! Of course, if any of you old timers do not want to have their “skeletons-inthe-closet” exhumed again, I do believe that graft and bribes are acceptable forms of dealing with newsletter editors…
Starting in the August 2007 issue, I will commence a “NSC Website of the Month” article in which we will review a
web site that is pertinent to snow sports. Notice that I explicitly mention “…pertinent to snow sports…” as while
skiing was the snow sport in which NSC was founded, snow boarding and other snow sports activities are of interest
to many current members.
As an allusion to my engineer background, look for an equipment review article series to start in the upcoming issues.
Since I am definitely NOT the expert on all types of snow sports equipment, please feel free to write an article for us.
Remember, this newsletter is YOUR publication.
Of course we will always keep up our reporting of just completed events and description of upcoming NSC events.
This newsletter will always stick to its “bread and butter.” As I mentioned earlier, a review of our newsletters from
the “beginning of (NSC) time” to the present shows a consistent regard for communication that is essential for any
successful organization.
Finally, a good vision always leaves room for midcourse adjustments. And this newsletter is no exception. If any of
you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to email me at newsletter@niseiskiclub.org and have a chat
with me. And articles from you members will always be appreciated.
One last note, I would like to step up and applaud Judy Hom for taking the reins as the Newsletter Editor as my predecessor. During her tenure one of the biggest advancements was to convert this newsletter to one that is now deliverable via email. Because of this new wave, the NSC is saving lots of money every month on postage. And because of
this savings, the NSC has more funds available to deliver on what we are all here for: TO HAVE FUN!

was a number one hit, Aretha Franklin became the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, my LA
Lakers had just won the NBA finals 4-2 over the Boston Celtics, and Iran and Iraq were at war with each other. Y2K
was a far distant future thought…
What was the NSC doing in July 1987?
Here’s an excerpt from the cover story.
“Summer is here! It’s time to work on your tan, have a BBQ, and play! Feel the sea breeze against your face as you
sail on San Francisco Bay. Or enjoy rushing down a water flume at a waterslide in Manteca. Enjoy the exhilaration
of cutting across the wake while being towed by a ski boat. Some of these events have limited signups available, so
sign up today.
Your new membership card is included in this month’s newsletter. Your new card will be valid for the 1987-88 year.
The plastic membership cards are now obsolete. If you have not received your card with this newsletter, please contact one of our membership chairpersons… North Bay, -Doris Nagahara or South Bay –Curtis Otaguro. If you know
someone who has not renewed their membership or would like to join, please forward the enclosed application to
them. Or better yet, please bring them to our TGIF at the Dunfey Hotel on July 31, 1987.”

A “Waterskiing/Camping” event was to be led by June Hamada and Curtis Otaguro.
Carol Gee and Harvey Lee was to lead a Bike Ride and Wine Tasting event on October 3rd.
Janet Mar was to lead a “Body Conditioning and Ski Tune Up” event on November 15th.
Doris had planned to lead a bowling event on December 5, 1987.
The “Go For It II” waterskiing event had a sign up application and the cost was $45 for the 3-day, 2-night camping
event.
There were 8 new members welcomed to the club in July 1987.
The cost of NSC membership was $20.
Due to the fact that there were no PC’s around in those days (OK, I am just kidding!), the newsletter seemed to be
literally a “cut and paste” job. You readers must excuse me this month as I am trying to figure out how to use my
scanner to digitize these archived NSC newsletters and present in upcoming articles. So this month, I had to type everything up by hand (like they did back then).

Berkeley Rose Garden & Gourmet Ghetto Hike

On May 19 our group of intrepid gourmet hikers gathered in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto to explore North Berkeley’s
parks and Arts & Crafts architectural heritage as well as the culinary delights of the birthplace of California Cuisine.
At the Berkeley Rose Garden we enjoyed a fine view of the Bay and wandered among the roses and running water.
Passing through a long tunnel behind children making noises to hear their echo, we entered Codornices Park and were
confronted with the irresistible temptation of a slippery slide. Our reknowned skill at speeding downhill on skis did
not transfer well to careening down the slippery slide, but fortunately only a few minor scrapes resulted.
The easy city walk became a real hike as we walked uphill along steep unmaintained paths though the woods, encountering a snake and deer along the way. Huffing and puffing up the long, steep Tamalpais Steps along the forested edge
of the park, we finally emerged hundreds of feet above our starting point.
Many of the beautiful Craftsman houses in the hills above the park had a magical quality about them, enhanced by
woodsy settings along narrow roads winding over the natural contours of the land. Greenwood Commons provided a
spectacular panoramic view ranging from the mountains of Marin past the Golden Gate to the Peninsula, with the East
Bay lying below us. The route back descended some very nice stairways including the famous Rose Walk.
During the walk we saw many works by the leading architects of the early 20th Century, including Julia Morgan (who
designed Hearst Castle), Bernard Maybeck (whose First Church of Christ Scientist is a National Historical Landmark)
and John Galen Howard. All of these earned fame for their neoclassical masterpieces but designed most of their residences in the very different Arts & Crafts style.
After finishing the hike, six of us enjoyed a late lunch at the birthplace of California Cuisine, Alice Water’s legendary
Chez Panisse. Our lunch could be seen as a continuation of our exploration of the Arts & Crafts tradition, as the precepts of California Cuisine closely mirror the Arts & Crafts philosophy—use of local materials, emphasis on simplicity and lack of artifice, and appreciation of nature. It was a delicious end to a very pleasant day

NSC GRAND SLAM VI FISHING CHARTER
Join in on an exciting day of salmon fishing aboard the New Seeker from Emeryville Sportfishing as Nisei Ski Club embarks on
Grand Slam VI. You can see mesmerizing views of the beautiful California coast and maybe spot a whale or other marine
wildlife while enjoying the company of fellow NSC members, great food and drink, and the thrill of a hard-fighting and very
tasty king salmon on the end of the line. Bring a potluck dish. NSC will provide drinks. Space is limited to 30. After
Thursday, July 4th, spaces cannot be guaranteed because remaining spaces may be released to the general
public. So sign up early!
Our first choice will be salmon fishing. However, should the salmon prove uncooperative or the ocean too rough, Bay fishing or
possibly Farallon Islands rock cod will be the alternatives.

Mountain View OBON
NSC is looking for volunteers to help out at this year’s Mountain View Buddhist
Temple’s Obon Festival July 21-22, 2007. Volunteering has many benefits. It
helps the local community. It’s a fun activity where you can meet and socialize
with many NSC members as well as enjoy the festival. And it continues our relationship with the MVBT for times when we need a certified kitchen for food
preparation for festivals such as Nikkei Matsuri.
We will be helping out at various booths such as the Tempura Booth (cooking
and selling), Bingo, (selling and verifying cards), Nickel Pitch, and the Beer
Booth (selling). It really is a lot of fun and we guarantee you’ll run into many
other NSC members. Below is a list of shifts that we need volunteers for. Contact Karen Soo (obon@niseiskiclub.org).
We appreciate any contribution of your time. And even if you can’t volunteer in
one of the booths, come and see your friends and enjoy the festival.

My second goal is to help streamline the club by making club related

making sign ups of events more
convenient. In addition to important
information such as the Constitution, we will add a FAQ which will
include answers to questions that
prospective or current members frequently ask. With the advent of the
Internet, people are accustomed to
using it to do their business. To
keep in step with the times, I would
like to implement online sign ups
for our events. I’ll keep you informed about these changes during
the year.

Okay, NSC-ers, as much as we like hanging around each other, it may be time to expand our social web. NAAAP, a
professional networking organization for Asian Americans, is throwing a picnic/volleyball bash.
Since this is a non-NSC event, you’ll need to sign-up for the picnic on the NAAAP website at: http://
www.naaapsf.org/Events.do, or pay $20 at the door. I know none of us are bashful, but if you would like to go into
the event with your fellow NSC members, please email Alex Kami at nsc-treasury@sbcglobal.net. We can establish a
place to meet prior to going in. WARNING: RSVP deadline for the $12 discounted rate is Wed, July 25 by 6pm
Honolulu time.
Need Volleyball Players!
As you may have guessed from the event header, there’s a volleyball tournament (round robin). At the time of printing, we’re still trying to get more details on the format and rules. NSC would like to field at least 1 team for the tournament.
If you are interested in being part of our team, again, please email Alex Kami @ nsctreasury@sbcglobal.net. For those of us courageous enough to join our team, Alex will ask you to sign the NSC
waiver form just in case you go beyond our expectations.
Vail Trip Update

For those of you who have not yet signed up for Vail, don't worry there is still
room. The spots, however, are steadily being filled and as of June 24th we
have at least 31 sign ups and possibly more. If you have sent in your sign up
form, I will be sending confirmations in early July.
Finally, I have added an option to fly out of San Jose. If you signed up for
another airport and would like to switch, please send me an email.
If you're on the fence about coming on the trip, then please feel free to send
me an email with any questions or concerns you might have. Vail is probably
one of the best week long ski trip destinations so don't miss out!
I'm looking forward to this great trip.
