Summer Program - Butte Theater

Thin air theatre Celebrates 10 Years
A 120-year tradition of theater in Cripple Creek continues this year at
the Butte Theatre.
Beginning in 1896
when the Butte Concert and Beer Hall
first took the stage in
Cripple Creek entertainment, audiences
have enjoyed a variety of music, theater,
and comedy. Over the
years the Butte has
served many functions. Originally a
place for ladies and
gentlemen to enjoy
classical music, it was
later repurposed as a
Artist’s rendition of the Butte in 2000 by Cherry Hunter.
site for dancing lesPrints available for sale in the box office.
sons, a storage facility,
a furniture store, and eventually fell into disuse.
In 1999 the City of Cripple Creek restored the Butte Opera House, now
known as the Butte Theater. The tradition of Classic Cripple Creek Melodrama, started at the Imperial Hotel by Wayne & Dorothy Mackin in the
1940s, was brought back to life at the Butte in 2000 by Stephen and Bonnie Mackin. In 2007, a new venture, Thin Air Theatre Company (TATC),
comprised of veteran Cripple Creek actors, directors and producers,
emerged to not only carry on the tradition of Classic Melodrama, but also
to produce new shows in other genres at the Butte.
Now in its tenth year, TATC brings several professional productions to
the stage. The stage will be filled with Classic Melodrama, a contemporary musical, comedy, mystery, and holiday cheer.
The Butte Theater is owned and funded by the City of Cripple Creek
and generous donations from area businesses and individuals. With the
support of those who believe in the Butte, its actors, writers and producers, and audiences of all ages, its stage will continue the long tradition of
showcasing the best of Cripple Creek entertainment.

Donkey Derby
Writer’s Notes
Chris Sorensen
A Four-Legged Fortune by
Dion Boucicault premiered in
London in 1866. I think it’s
only fitting that this summer
(Thin Air Theatre Company’s
10th and 150 years since
Boucicault’s premiere), our
Cripple Creek reboot takes to
the stage. This story holds a
special place in my heart. My
first experience with melodrama came performing the
original under the direction of
Richard Rossomme, Cripple
Creek’s maestro of melodrama. Years later, when my
turn came to direct my first
Boucicault play, Richard sent
me a letter outlining his take
on staging melodrama, emphasizing its high style, the underscoring, the need to play to the back of the house. His
love of melodrama was infectious and has influenced every story I tell, every script I
write. I hope we do him justice, although Richard would no doubt tell us, “Bigger!
Faster! Louder!” So, place your bets. The race is on!
Final note: The very first Donkey Derby actually took place in the early 1930s, not
the 1890’s as depicted in our play. But I think history will forgive us this little fib, as
Cripple Creek is no stranger to folks who bend the truth to spice up a tale.

wandering troupe of performers tell the story of our hero, and his choice between a

Pippin
Directors Notes Lysa Fox
This show has a wonderful song on which the whole conceit of the piece is
hinged. It’s a song about finding one’s own personal “corner of the sky”. But, the
sky isn’t square. So, is it possible to find our true potential? Do we create our own
destiny or let others guide us? Or both? Trekking through life means different
things to different people. But, “figuring it all out” is certainly universal – we’ve all
been there or maybe are there now. Actually, does our search every really stop?
Pippin is a little different than some of our past summer fare. It may leave you with
a more questions than answers, which I believe is part of the purpose of the show. I
will say that Pippin is a favorite piece among many theatre artists and we are thrilled
to have you here to experience it with our theatre artists. So – join us! Come and
waste an hour or two...we hope you enjoy!
