You can pay for Treasures Under the Sea online at: http://www.huispirit.com/under-the-sea.htl December 2015 3 of 9 Visit to Manulele Distillery, Home of Kō Hana Hawaiian Agricole Rum A group of us recently went on a tasting and tour at Manulele Distillery out in Kunia, where KōHana Agricole Rum is produced. What a great treat this place is!!! Our guide, Kyle, was so friendly and so obviously LOVES his job and what they are doing out there. The tour was informative, fun, and taught us so much more than just about the rum they are producing. We got to taste some freshly squeezed sugarcane juice, and tour a garden with many of the sugar cane varieties they are growing. They also have an aquaponics system there, growing lettuce in a soil free setting. We all thought, what a great place to take the kids to learn about aquaponics! The view is fantastic (even on the slightly cloudy, rainy day we visited), and the rum tasting was obviously one of the highlights of our tour!! We all highly recommend the tour and tasting, and we plan to go again soon, once they have their cocktail bar and food counter open!! They are open for tours on Wed-Sat from 10:00-3:00. Ko mean’s “sugarcane.” Agricole is a french word for “made entirely from freshly pressed cane juice.” December 2015 4 of 9 Kō Hana Hawaiian Agricole Rum Recipes Kō Hana Blondie Mai Tai Courtesy of Morimoto Waikiki 1.5 oz Kō Hana KEA Hawaiian Agricole Rum 3/4 oz sugar cane juice 3/4 oz fresh lime juice 1/2 oz orange curacao 1/4 oz orgeat Shake and pour over ice. Garnish with orchid and sugar cane stick It’s Always Sunny Courtesy of The Pig and the Lady 2 oz Kō Hana Agricole Rum 1/2 oz lime juice Fill with spicy ginger beer on the rocks Garnish with a star anise or lime wheel Cliffs of Insanity Courtesy of Livestock Tavern 1 1/2 oz Kō Hana Agricole Rum 1/2 oz Cocchi Americano 3/4 oz lime juice 1/5 oz simple syrup 3 fresh strawberries Muddle strawberries, add ingredients and shake, double strain in a martini glass then top with 1.5 oz of sparkling brut rose Garnish with strawberry wheel Still in the Mood for Rum? Christmas Rum Balls Ingredients (yield – 2 dozen): 2 1⁄2 cups vanilla wafers, crushed 2 tablespoons cocoa 1 1⁄4 cups powdered sugar 1⁄2 cup spiced rum 2 tablespoons white corn syrup (i.e. Karo) 1 cup pecans or 1 cup walnuts, broken Directions: Sift the cocoa with 1 cup sugar. Stir in the spiced rum mixed with the syrup. Add crushed vanilla wafers and nuts. Mix well. Shape mixture into walnut sizes balls and cover with remaining sugar. Store in a tin. If a Hui member brings an eligible guest, the current member will be entered for a chance at a wonderful opportunity drawing. A plate of Honolulu Cookies and “The Green Plate” book will be included in this opportunity gift to be given. The Green Plate will serve to remind us of the importance of never wasting time and moving forward in the journey of a military lifestyle wherever and whenever the need arises to start again. This is a tribute to the hospitality of a military lifestyle, either active duty or retired sacrifices, past and present, and friendships past and those to come. We invite you all to bring a guest and your names will be entered in the pick for this great give-away. Hawaiian Christmas History Christmas was officially introduced to Hawaii, when Protestant missionaries came from New England, after 1820. Prior to this, the holiday coincided with a traditional four month long, Hawaiian festival called Makahiki. This was a peaceful season with no war or conflicts. It was considered a time for “peace on earth and goodwill toward men.” It’s believed that the first Christmas in Hawaii occurred in 1786, when Captain George Dixon, docked aboard the Queen Charlotte in Waimea Bay on Kauai. He commanded his crew to prepare a Christmas dinner that included roasted pig, pie and grog mixed with coconut milk. The English navigator then led his men in toasts to their families and friends back home. Alexander Liholiho (King Kamehameha IV) declared December 25th to be his kingdom’s national day of Thanksgiving, in 1856. Only two years later, Santa Claus appeared in Hawaii, arriving at Washington Place, which is now the governor’s residence, to deliver gifts for the children.
