The study began in 1942 when Dr. Leonard S. Fpsdlrk, professor of chemistry in the dental school, and his associates discovered that synthetic vita- fc min K was capable of greatly retarding the formation of the acids mat cause tooth decay. Early experiments indicated that the vitamin would not stay in the mouth (or long periods of time, and that to be effective it should be dispersed throughout the mouth immediately after the subject had eaten for that is when acids form most rapidly. It appeared to Dr. Fosdick that the ideal method of administration would be in chewing gum, which could be used wKhout inconvenience Immediately after meals, Furthermore the chewing of the gum had , the effect of driving the vitamin K into areas of the teeth most susceptible to decay. An experiment was then undertaken, and continued over a period of 18 months, to determine how effectively vitamin K in chewing gum would retard tooth decay.
