In Pakistan, the major
reason why iOS can
never overpower Android anytime soon is
the lack of awareness
and a mindset that iOS
is very ‘technical’ and
difficult to use!

T
here are a few rivalries that need no introduction for
instance Coke vs. Pepsi, Apple vs. Samsung, Nike vs.
Adidas, however, a similar rivalry exist between the two
biggest and well-known technology platforms; Android and iOS!
This is not a new topic of course, but we will give you an insight
on this rivalry from our country’s perspective.
When you go out with your friends or even hang out in your routine circles, the most common question people ask when you’re
using your phone; Which phone is this? You answer it and then
if you’re an iOS user, well according to some people, you are
then enlisted in a distinguished mobile user list.
Basically, there isn’t much difference in the two interfaces
except for the ‘complexity’ and ‘flawlessness’ according to some
of the users. It’s a developed theory in our country that iPhone
(that supports iOS) is the more complex and that not everyone
can use it.
Well, apparently! Not to forget the working of the two operating
systems, technically speaking iOS is far more ‘stable’ operating
system if you compare it with Android but the latter however is
‘easy to use’ and even bigger advantage that it has is that android
is supported by more than 7 mobile companies in Pakistan compared to iOS’s just one and that is, Apple!
A layman who lives in Pakistan, his perspective about these two
operating systems matters a lot because ultimately at the end
of the day every single person is a potential target customer for
both, Android and iOS.

AUGUST 2015
When people in different parts of Lahore were asked to sum up
their views about iOS, they came up with words like complex,
classy, smooth not to forget ‘expensive’ too. When they were
further aided about the fact that we are asking their views about
iOS not iPhone then they seemed a bit confused and more than
50% people were unaware of iOS. We are talking about laymen here! It’s quite a shock isn’t it? As compared to the views
about Android, people answered with words like easy, slow (at
times) and glitches! Most of the people said that it is easy to use
however a staggering amount of people also said that it either
gets stuck too often. Approximately 20-30% of the people asked
about Android were unaware of Android! You can clearly see
who has won the first bit of this war in Pakistan.
Then we moved to a rather more ‘technology aware’ respondent
group to find out which platform is more popular among the students of Pakistan. Popularity is something that can be measured
on the factors like awareness, durability, affordability, design,
usage and technical features that is why we moved to a different
respondent group to get the answers for this bit.
One thing that didn’t surprise us at all was that all of the students
were aware of both operating systems, this endorses the fact that
the youth of this country is well aware and up-to-date of what is
happening around them! Majority of the people (say more than
70%) we talked to were Android supporters and hence were
actually using the Android operating system.
The twist here is that even some of the iOS users who were currently part of the iOS family preferred Android and likewise we
had a few exceptions for Android users who were using Android
but favored iOS.
www.moremag.pk
I can well recall a very interesting statement from one of the
student, he said; “Well, at this age we don’t care whether it’s an
Android or iOS because unlike Western countries we don’t enjoy
pockets in Pakistan and hence it limits our buying power so we
have to settle with whatever our parents are willing to get us.
All that I personally care about is that a smartphone should be
fast, affordable and beautiful augmented with all the latest social
apps.”
So clearly until now the respondents seem to favor Android a
little more than iOS however they keep on mixing iOS with
Apple and its smartphones. We can develop from our findings
that in Pakistan iOS still has a lot of ground to cover up as far as
its awareness goes. So, we go back to our topic that which one of
the two operating systems is more popular among the local users
and above that we further prompted the respondents to enlighten
us with the reason for popularity of Android being far more than
that of iOS and why did they choose it? Most of them started off
with the availability of Android across the country and stressed
the fact how Android is supported by several brands as compared
to iOS’s just one brand i.e. Apple!
Some of the respondents also talked about the affordability as an
Android supported phone starts from 5,000 PKR up to 90,000
PKR. We recall a respondent saying; “The fact why people of
Pakistan favor Android a lot more than iOS is for the same reason people like Corolla more than Honda! We are influenced by
what we see around us and ultimately buy it.”
App Development
Coming to the app development side of iOS and Android. We
talked to a few people who are working in the app development
sector. The fact that Android’s ‘Play store’ is a much more populated and it’s the first choice of developers to work for because
of its ease of app listing and number of users listed on play store.
Whereas iOS ‘App store’ is the platform that is a second choice
platform for developers but if you want to earn more as an app
developer then iOS App store is the place to be a part of. In
terms of the app development on the operating platforms this is
how it goes, Android’s play store leads the way, iOS app store at
second and Windows’ app store at third.
Security Features of Android vs. iOS
Furthermore, the security features of both Android and iOS are
well in place to secure its users’ data, privacy and their devices.
Android allows you to install the apps, remove them and in some
cases uninstall apps as well, REMOTELY! Whereas iOS, on the
other hand, provides an amazing feature that helps you locate
your device in case it’s lost or stolen. It’s a well-known app
known as ‘find my iPhone’. Also, iOS allows you to delete any
www.moremag.pk
sensitive data in case your phone is lost and recover it once it’s
found. Isn’t that amazing!
Over the years, the global market has evolved a lot so have we Pakistan. Things have changed rather rapidly over the past year
with the introduction of 3G and 4G technology in the country!
The majority of Pakistan’s youth has either an Android or an iOS
supported smartphone triggered by the urgency to stay connected and updated to our social circles. We also have a promising
market when it comes to technology and it seems that Android
also have a promising
“ We
market when it comes to
technology and it seems
that Android would keep on
getting wider until Apple
decides to either allow other
companies to use its iOS or
come up with new product or
line extensions to penetrate
across the market.
“
would keep on getting wider until Apple decides to either allow
other companies to use its iOS or come up with new product or
line extensions to penetrate across the market.
Let’s also quickly discuss the availability of iOS supported
phones as compared to Android. In Pakistan, the major reason
why iOS can never overpower Android anytime soon is the lack
of awareness and a mindset that iOS is very ‘technical’ and difficult to use and complexity is something that can kill the charm.
Conversely, the availability of Android supported smartphones is
humongous and it seems to be the case for quite some time now,
eying for the years to come. We can only hope that Apple would
be deciding for iOS to start rolling it into other smartphone
brands soon to increase its demand among the masses.
In a nutshell, if we compare Android with iOS, it can be summed
up as masses vs niche, affordability vs class, availability vs flawlessness respectively. No matter which one of these two you’re
using just make sure that as long as you’re happy with your
smartphone don’t think of changing it anytime soon because value for money is something becoming more of a myth with every
passing day in the smartphone industry!

Some nice features that i like!
Android
There are also a few tips and tricks in both the Operating Systems in an attempt to amaze its users. Android allows you to stop
notifications for individual apps, set mobile data usage limit,
add multiple email accounts, and customize your mobile’s home
screen from icons to widgets you name it. Not to forget the fact
that you can customize your dictionary and add words that you
use often but aren’t part of the dictionary simply by selecting
the word and then select add to the dictionary. Also, there is a
feature to ‘add owner info’ in case you have lost your phone!
The trick is that owner’s info is displayed on the lock screen so
it becomes easy for a person if someone wants to return your
phone. Finally the most facilitating feature, you can ‘search via
voice’ and even type texts and give commands using your voice
rather than doing it all by yourself.
iOS
On the other hand, iOS has its own sets of tips and tricks to aww
its users, it allows you to take snaps while making a video, you
can adjust the text size, and it allows you to synchronize all your
pictures in Apple devices via iCloud. Next trick is a lifesaver,
if you have written something and accidently deleted it all you
need to do is shake your iPhone which will undo the deletion of
that text. Also, if you have a habit of listening to music and falling asleep while doing so all you need to do is go to the timer,
scroll down and there will be stop playing option after setting up
the timer depending upon when you want to stop it. All these tips
and tricks are aimed to make user’s lives easier.
How to apply for
National Identity
Card online?
G
etting your own computerized National Identity Card
(CNIC) in Pakistan is quite a hectic task to do. Visiting
NADRA offices and standing in never-ending queues
for getting through the required procedure and then visiting
again to collect the card not only requires a lot of patience but
also the precious time which is already difficult to spare for
many of us. Keeping in mind the issues faced by the citizens, the
National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has
come up with a digital solution of the problem.
The newly introduced service by the authority named as ‘PakIdentity’ enables the citizens living in Pakistan as well as abroad
to apply for their CNIC’s online. Not only this but they can even
get the doorstep delivery of their CNIC’s within 10 days.
This online facility can be availed for the following categories:
1. To get the new Overseas CNIC (NICOP).
2. To Reprint Identity Card (In case of Lost/Stolen card).
3. To Renew Identity card (In case of expired card).
4. To convert Identity card to chip-based Smart Identity Card
5. For modifications in ID Card data.
However, if you are currently living in Pakistan and want to get
CNIC for the first time then you are required to visit NADRA
office for biometric verification.

For any of the five categories mentioned above, you can log
on to www.nadra.gov.pk and click on ‘Pak-Identity’ segment.
Alternatively, you can directly type id.nadra.gov.pk in order to
avail the privileges of the online process.
By following the below-mentioned steps, you can apply for the
CNIC online:
1. Login
2. Submit the required documents in scanned format.
3. Submit the processing fee by means of debit or credit card.
(The application fee can also be submitted at the nearest NADRA
Kiosk or e-sahulat centres.)
4. Fill in the application form and submit it.
After successfully submitting the application, CNIC is said to
be delivered to applicant’s given address within 10 working
days. In case of shipment of CNIC overseas, the applicant must
submit the shipment charges. Pakistani residents can also track
the application by simply texting the Application Tracking ID to
“8400”. While the overseas applicants can check the status of their
application by logging in with their registered account at the PakIdentity Website. The new system seems a major development
towards the improvement in the functionality of NADRA which
is ultimately beneficial for both, the authority and the citizens in
the long run.

CYBERSPACE
CBMs AND PAKISTAN’S STAND
by: Sabahat Afsheen
With the advent and growth of electronic media and social networking, the
crimes like identity theft, illicit use of credit cards, blackmailing on social media
are rising but there is no mechanism to define and take action against them.
W
ho would have thought that a micro “www” known
as “world wide web” would turn the planet into
a virtual global village? Right from flying in the
air to walking on land, from maritime transport structures till
international financial system, everything will be linked and
controlled by these computer systems.
If we call the Internet ‘a Glue of modern management system’
then it won’t be wrong. Such a technology which holds together
government systems, defense institutes, financial services, goods
industries, road traffic system, airlines and marine traffic is
nothing less than a miraculous invention.
But as the technology developed, it started to cater the threats
of security as well. These crimes are not on micro level only but
are also shaking the confidence among countries because no one
knows the identity of a cyber attacker.
Attribution is another problem as it is difficult to blame a single
individual, state or non-state party for cyber-attacks. It is not
confined to a lone computer system but trajectory of a cyberattack goes cold as viruses, zombies, and Trojan Horses which
www.moremag.pk
infect the system in sapping ways, making the command and
control (C2) system go haywire.
An all pervasive cyber surveillance campaign is on its way to
development. The prospects are so terrifying that countries like
Iran, China, Saudi Arabia and Russia are planning to make their
own internet.
Dr. Tughral Yamin; Associate Dean, Department of Peace and
Conflict Studies CIPS-(NUST), has written a very descriptive
book entitled “Cyberspace CBMs between India and Pakistan”.
The book provides insight on Confidence Building Measures
(CBMs) between India and Pakistan of a new kind. It not
only covers the international initiatives to develop norms and
behavior for cybersecurity but also shed light on the existing
domestic and international cyber laws and treaties.
The major portion and focus of the book is the info based CBMs
that can be developed among Pakistan and India and a way
forward keeping in view the growing threats and insecurities in
the field of cyberspace.

Dr. Yamin has combined the policy with technology while
building up his case for CBMs in cyber-space between India and
Pakistan from multiple angles.
Important angles covered by the writer include international law,
existing international and regional treaties on cyber security, the
national point of view on cyber security and existing models of
cooperation in cyberspace.
“
CBMs (Confidence
Building Measures) are
self-established norms of
behavior which can be
bilateral as well as unilateral
and have the tendency of
legally binding treaties.
So far, no work has been done in developing info-based CBMs
between India and Pakistan. It is hoped that this endeavor will
prove to be a catalyst for more work on this subject.
CBMs (Confidence Building Measures) are self-established
norms of behavior which can be bilateral as well as unilateral
and has the tendency of legally binding treaties. These are timehonored diplomatic tools to build trust and prevent wars.
Now coming towards cyber warfare, it is the most potent form
of non-kinetic warfighting. Nations are investing a lot of money,
time and efforts in developing cyber defenses to protect their
critical infrastructures like the national C2 (command and
control) systems.
South Asia and Cyber concerns
On the other side, South Asia has been a constant conflict zone
since 1947, due to the partition of India and Pakistan. Many
treaties, agreements, understandings and negotiations have been
made among the two countries upon the issues of Kashmir,
division of water resources, Siachin, Wullar Barrage Project, Sir
Creek, Terrorism, Drug Trafficking, Economic and commercial
cooperation, and promotion of friendly exchanges.
The two countries have been meeting regularly to add to the
existing CBMs even on the nuclear issue but information space
CBMs were never on the menu.
South Asia took most readily to internet revolution by adopting
a wide array of commercially available Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) for managing businesses and
private affairs but didn’t do enough to improve regional cyber
security environment.
The Indian armed forces have invested heavily in developing
net-centric capabilities since 1980s, and are now lobbying for a
separate cyber command.
Pakistan tested its fully automated Strategic Command and
Control Support System (SCCSS) in November 2012 and its
nuclear safety regime caters to cyber threats. The potential of
cyber warfare remains because a growing community of cyber
warriors in India and Pakistan are actively engaged in defacing
government websites.
Current Scenario of Cyber Security in Pakistan
You must be thinking that in such petrifying scenario, what
sort of developments have been made on Pakistan’s end in
cyberspace security? Yes indeed, despite growing cyber-crimes,
there is no database to record or file them yet in Pakistan.
What has happened that instead of becoming an area of
cooperation, cyberspace has become another dimension of warfighting? It has altered the landscape of modern warfare.
With the advent and growth of electronic media and social
networking, the crimes like identity theft, illicit use of credit
cards, blackmailing on social media are rising. But there is no
mechanism to define and take action against them.
Keeping in view the greatest economic powers of the world, let’s
compare their cyber regulatory systems.
Prevention of Electronic Crimes Ordinance was made back in
2009, but it was lapsed before becoming a part of law.
Cyber Regulations in US and China
The cyber regulations in US are administered by the
Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCSI). As
an internet superpower, US vigorously pursues its commercial,
political and military interests in cyber-space. According to
reports China’s government announced that defense spending
this year will increase by 10 percent from last year’s budget to
around $143.6 billion. In order to cool down cyber tempers the
US and China have started to take the subject in high-level talks.
On June 24, 2013, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed announced
that a Cyber Security Strategy Bill is getting prepared in
collaboration with Pakistan Information Security Association
(PISA).
Since Pakistan is second among the list of countries that are most
spied upon, therefore; there is a need to allocate a handsome
amount of funds for Cyber Security Strategy.
Senator Mushahid also suggested the formation of Cyber

Security Task Force within the Ministry of IT to propose
counter-measures and that decision was unanimously accepted.
He also laid the Cyber Security Action Plan.
Pakistan’s government recently introduced a cybercrime bill
which caused anxiety amongst IT and civil rights communities.
And afterwards, the IT ministry made draconian amendments in
existing Electronic Cybercrime Bill stating that any internet user
can be imprisoned and fined for using any information system
(laptop, computer, smartphone, etc) to share information that the
government deems inappropriate, vulgar, or “against the glory of
Islam”. But this should not only be done on the individual level
on the wish of a few stakeholders to keep their glory. But they
should think about the threats involved on the International level.
Alamzeb Khan; a freelance journalist, staff reporter, sub-editor
and anchorman with working experience of Pakistan’s leading

media organizations, such as the Frontier Post, Khyber Mail
International and the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation has
quoted in his article named “Pakistan: Cyber Warfare and
Internet Hacking-17 January 2012” that Indian and Pakistani
hackers have been involved in cyber warfare since 1998,
leaving no stone unturned in attacking and blaming each other
for hacking the websites of their opponents. As a result of this
warfare, websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Supreme
Court of Pakistan and even the State Bank of Pakistan have also
been hacked.
“In Pakistan, government systems aren’t yet automated across
the board. Time and energy that could be spent on securing
these systems is being wasted keeping records in physical files.
Compare that to countries such as China and the U. S., who
possess dedicated cyber warfare units. Our government lacks
basic automation of its systems, but getting to that point requires
considerable investment,” he said.
The Potential Solution
Understanding the importance of academic institutions mainly
universities and think tanks, we should begin the cooperation
from lowest level by organizing seminars, experts exchange
views, presenting and publishing researches in this new, vast and
technically diversified field.
Laws should be devised and must be enacted by law ministries
and police forces to track down and persecute cyber criminals.
Numerous measures which are available to prevent cyber-attacks
should be used for personal safety like firewalls, anti-virus
software, intrusion detection, prevention systems, and encryption
and log-in passwords. There is an urgent need to develop an
agreed framework for building confidence and trust in the
information space.
The US and Russian Federation are actively considering and
upgrading their Nuclear Risk Reduction Centre (NRRC)
communication Link for cooperating on matters related to
cybersecurity. Such options are available to reduce Sino-US
cyber tensions.
In the same way, India and Pakistan can also establish their own
NRRC to resolve the cyber security issues. Good national cyber
security policies and practices are necessary for the development
of cyberspace CBMs.
Capacity building, raising awareness, developing policies and
structures, establishing incident management and response,
holding cyber security incident response workshops, improving
policies and crafting cybersecurity work plan are all necessary to
develop information CBMs for Cyber Security.
Virtual Reality devices to observe 14 million unit sales by 2016!
M
ost of the tech giants of the world have dipped
their toes into the Virtual Reality (VR) segment
like Google, HTC, Samsung and Sony etc. And
according to a new study by a research firm Topology Research
Institute, the sales of VR device will be nearly 14 million units
worldwide by next year i.e. 2016.
The study foresees the increase in sales of these devices to 22
million by the end of 2018 and 38 million units by 2020.
www.moremag.pk
The most probable reason behind the increased sales of VR
devices is the relative reduction in prices just like Google Cardboard, through which one can easily experience virtual reality
in a simple yet affordable way.
The experts believe that virtual reality is expected to go beyond
gaming segment that will also be helpful in drawing people
towards itself.

gadgets
The popularity of phablets
is associated with the many
advantages that it brings to
the users due to its liberal size;
after all we are a size obsessed
generation.
by: Anza Khalid
N
othing in life is permanent, they say. Nothing stays
forever, they say. But some rare circumstances prevail
more than others. Phablets seem to be one of them!
You might not have heard the word ‘Phablet’ but it’s alright.
It’s a new addition to our tech dictionary. It’s a portmanteau of
phone and tablet. Phablet is essentially a Smartphone whose size
lies between that of a Smartphone and a tablet.
Phablets started appearing in the market as soon as 2007 but they
did not receive much appreciation as it often appears that the
human mind accepts change slowly and gradually. During the
end of the last decade, the size of Smartphones started increasing
but the gradient of this increase was neither steep nor abrupt.
In 2011, Samsung revealed two large screen Smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy Player 5 sported a generous 5 inch screen
while Samsung Galaxy Note had 5.3 inch display. It would not
be wrong to say that back then these gadgets appears somewhat
peculiar!
The tablets became a success story during the first 2 years of this
decade. The Online Publishers Association (OPA) conducted
a survey regarding the popularity and usage of tablets and it
showed dramatic results. 12% percent of Internet users in the
United States owned a tablet in 2011. In 2012, the figure rose
to 31%. In retrospect, this trend shows that the big screen was
becoming a darling for the Americans.
It is easy to comprehend that as tablets were being embraced
14
MORE
AUGUST 2015
and the Smartphones size were expanding, the developers and
designers produced a wise amalgam of phablets, as we know
them today.
The year 2012 saw a tremendous success for phablets as 25.6
million phablets were sold all over the globe. With huge sales
of Samsung Galaxy Note, other Smartphone vendors diverted
their attention towards developing cost efficient yet powerful
phablets. Samsung Galaxy Note could be called the pioneer of
phablets. 2013 was dubbed by Reuters as ‘The Year of Phablet’.
In 2014, phablets garnered new heights of success as they were
sold more than desktop and laptop computers. Highlighting these
state of affairs, The New York Times quoted that “phablets could
become the dominant computing device of the future — the
most popular kind of phone on the market, and perhaps the only
computer many of us need."
The popularity of phablets is associated with the many
advantages that it brings to the users due to its liberal size; after
all we are a size obsessed generation. Phablets have somewhat
altered our lifestyles and we like the new ways.
With the little time that we all have and it seems to be drifting
away all the time, phablets pave ways for us to do many chores
on the go. It’s now easier to reply to emails or read the latest
current affairs stories while in the train or check Facebook
notifications, no need to take time out for these mundane tasks.
Similarly, an avid book reader can put PDFs into the phablet and
www.moremag.pk
need not to carry an e-reader or a tablet while on the go. The
font size is comfortable and the words frequency on a single
screen is far from annoying, you don’t need to turn the page or
scroll down on every other line. In comparison, a Smartphone is
freakishly small to read a book and a tablet adds extra baggage.
It is also easier to just own a single phablet because it houses all
your images, notes, books and contacts. You won’t need to think
hard to locate a certain photo or a magazine. Similarly, it just
seems more practical and budget friendly to own a single device
that serves all the purposes. An all-in-one computing platform is
a dream come true for people who spend a good amount of time
on public transportation. You can comfortably make a call, play
a game, read a book or check Instagram from a single gadget!
Phablets appear to be the perfect gadget when you want to
snuggle into bed and watch a movie with your partner on a cold
winter night. The size of a phablet is neither too large nor too
small. Laptop or even a tablet would be a bit too large for the
purpose.
The most interesting advantage that phablets provide is that it
is quite suited to the needs of senior citizens. They are large
enough hence they don’t put strain on eyes. The user friendly
interfaces make them quite popular among the elderly. They are
easier to click photos as compared to complex cameras. You’ll
find many grand aunts holding iPads and clicking photos on a
wedding! In the same way, seniors find emailing on phablets
way easier as compared to owning and managing a computer for
this very purpose.
The fair sex seems to enjoy phablets more than the rest. They
look extravagant; it’s a good enough reason for most women
to own them. They save women from using a complicated
computing device. Their large size might become a botheration
for most men as they won’t fit into pockets, unless large sized
pockets make a comeback into fashion again, but women don’t
need to worry about that since phablets can slip into their
designers bag with no hassle. In fact, some ladies claim that
they now find it easier to locate the phones from amongst all the
commodities of life that dwell in their bags.
Southeast Asia has seen a drastic increase in the sales of
phablets. This is because of three reasons. Firstly, Phablets have
been heavily marketed by companies like Samsung, Apple,
LG etc. Many of these companies are Asian and hence they
own significant market share. Secondly, the working hours of
countries like South Korea are longer than the western countries.
Most people just have time for dinner before calling it a day.
Hence, phablet appears to be a wiser choice as the people can
browse the internet during the travel hours. Thirdly, South
Asians love gaming. According to some statistics, the most
popular App in South Asia is SK Planet’s T Store. The Southeast
Asian lifestyle definitely suggests that phablets are not going
anywhere anytime soon!
Even though size is the defining characteristic and the biggest
asset of a phablet, during the early days of phablets, many
users felt uncomfortable in times they wanted to use the gadget
single handedly. But software developers have solved this issue
by introducing the feature of reachability. This feature shrinks
the interactive screen size for as long as the user desires. For
instance, some people use the reachability feature while they are
texting and when they want to read a book or watch a video, they
resume to the normal size.
Phablets have claimed Southeast Asia and America. It won’t
be long before they conquer the rest of the world. China and
India are the emerging markets that define the holistic success
of a product. Although phablets have beaten the sales of tablets
in India as well but it still needs time to completely cover the
market. Since the technology is becoming pocket friendly with
every passing day, we won’t be surprised if we witness low end
phablets in the years to come.
The discussion suggests that phablets will be staying with us for
a while, for how long, no one knows. A single gadget that can
do it all was a utopian idea in the past but today it’s a reality.
We live in a world that loves mobility and phablet is the answer
to all the queries, at least as of now. But as the world keeps on
evolving and we keep on reaching new heights of technological
advancements with every fleeting second, we can’t deny the fact
that phablets won’t always be here. So why not get the flavor of
the gadget while it’s still in fashion. We might make some stories
to tell to our grandchildren.
Few Facts
1. Regular smartphones have around 3.5” – 4.9” screens. Phablets are those smartphones that possess 5.0” – 6.9” screen size
while Tablet devices screen size starts from 7.0” – 8.5” or greater.
2. Galaxy Note 3 was marked as Samsung’s fastest-selling phablet of all time that received 10 million units sale in just two
months of its release.
3. Samsung blames that the success of its phablets is the reason why the sales of its tablets are slow.
4. The iPhone 6 Plus was the first ever phablet by the tech giant Apple that went on sale in September 2014.

Hunza A paradise on earth
A
s I whizzed past the chilly Chilas, I was thinking about
what lies ahead of me. I had never gone past the lower
Kashmir let alone the princely state of Hunza before. The
thought of a medieval princely state with Mirs still perched upon
the throne with riveting folklore rampant among the fair-skinned
denizens of these barren mountains arose a feeling of mixed
exuberance. My passion for mountaineering and high-altitudes
have taken me to scenic Zermatt where the mighty Matterhorn
stands tall looking over the small but delightful town. I was
charmed by the winding train rides in Austrian Alps and their
funny German accent which they proudly claim to be the only way
of speaking it. I drove to Norwegian fjords through a spectacular
landscape driving through hordes of reindeers.
Only my homesickness grew by my interactions with the travelers
who had been to Pakistan and their stories. I was told about a world
I never knew existed very close to Nanga Parbat and the spot where
the three greatest mountain ranges meet are a visual delight.

I was north bound to one of the remotest city in Hunza called
Shimshal, a good 80 km off the Karakoram Highway, the city is
known for its remoteness and peace. Chronicles from Mustansar
Hassan Tarrar and word of mouth were intriguing enough to
lure me away from touristic routes and places without a story.
Even though it was only in the coming hours that my destiny was
revealed to me. After a rainy and rocky journey to serene Dasu,
we hit a stop because of a landslide. An ironic felicity subdued me
from my natural confusion over the time it took to clear that up.
That was something that would never happen in Alps but again,
I was on a journey like Frodo and less chances of rescue meant a
slightly more palatable sense of adventure. As I perched upon a
rock with a local Baba willing to impart his wisdom through his
wizened eyes the tumultuous Indus river kept roaring, a kind of
unintimidated welcome only for the brave.
As our happy caravan set off again, among them the older,
grunted despise for the inconvenience they have had to endure.
Our public transport snaked along the miraculous KKH. The
miraculous highest paved international highway, it’s sometimes
sarcastically called the joy-ride to death. It takes a type of sadistic
pleasure to enjoy a barricade-less treacherous ride that can
punish your reluctance in a lethal manner. Connecting Islamabad
to historic Kashgar, KKH was ranked 3rd among best tourist
attractions in Guardian. Good glimpses of snow-clad he Diamir
district, we entered into the fairy tale state of Gilgit. Alps were
already fading away by the majestic elevations of the terrain.
The tallest rock sculpture of the Swiss Alps, Mont Blanc, which
literally means ‘White Mountain’ stands at an elevation of 4807
meters and I was struggling to find a peak that was below that
altitude already in Gilgit. After an acclimatization overnighter I
took a local bus to Aliabad, the de facto capital of Hunza state.
A great travel tip that has always served me well from good old
days as ‘Do in Rome as the Romans do’. A simple shalwar qameez
and low profile will do you wonders. Showing off your Northface
climbing gear will only make you another tourist, the ones
infamous for their Mallorca style havoc.
My new travel partner in Aliabad, which I befriend over a cup
of tea in a local bus stop cum hotel was heading towards a small
village called Shiskat in Attabad Lake. A lake that was supposed
to be a part of KKH before a disastrous landslide in January 2010.
Attabad village came crumbling down onto the road merging it
with the river leaving behind a 23 KM lake with changing water
colors. As with us Pakistanis, when life gives us lemons we make
a perfect lemonade. Years from the incident there are boats that
take in cars, cattle, motorbikes, luggage and sometimes a moving
hotel across the lake. As we sat and sipped our strong teas,
entered a lanky young lad over-tanned with high-altitude sun
and a hazel-eyed, blond foreigner. They ensconced themselves in
seats and ordered some snacks as the foreigner started talking to
an eager youth. He pointed towards the wall behind me towards

concern for the government of Punjab nowadays and
currently, Punjab Food Authority (PFA) is the hot topic for
the masses as it is continuously conducting raids on hundreds
of restaurant and eateries in Lahore, followed by heavy fines and
sealings for incorporating anti-health environment. But now, the
Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has also come into action with
an aim to ensure the tax collection for the provincial kitty. With
the help of Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), PRA
has launched a new and effective Restaurant Invoice Monitoring

RIMS is basically a web-based application that provides real-time
capturing and monitoring of invoices issued by the restaurants to
the customers in order to ensure proper declaration of sales tax
on services that will ultimately result in revenue maximisation.
Most importantly, this new system will not be limited to Lahore
only because the authority has announced that RIMS shall be
gradually implemented across the province starting from the
major restaurants located at MM Alam Road, Mehmood Ali
Qasuri Road, Qaddafi Stadium, and the famous Food Street.
On the other side, PRA is also conducting an interesting prize

Social
media
S
ocial media networks are a silent yet one of the most
powerful, not to mention deafening, platforms the world
has ever seen.
It has given everyone in the world the freedom of speech, in the
most literal sense, along with the ability to be heard and make an
impact amongst billions of others.
While using social media networks is probably one of the easiest
ways to engage with your customers and augment your brand’s
presence, it is also one of the trickiest tools to use. Where one
social media post can go viral and give you the much needed
exposure within seconds, the same post can backfire and ruin
years of goodwill and branding.
There is no exact science for using social media networks;
however, there are definitely some ways to ensure that you do not
use it incorrectly.
The first thing you need to understand, as a marketer, is that social
media networks belong to the consumers. No matter how hard you
try and no matter how many resources you put to your marketing
strategy, in the end, it’s all about how the viewers perceive it.
This is the case with traditional marketing too; but with social
media marketing, you have less time to act and the need to hop on
to an ongoing frenzy is too tempting. Therefore, in a hurry, you
often fail to realize how easily your marketing campaign can be
hijacked and/or backfired completely.
Take a look at some of McDonald’s Twitter campaigns. The
international fast food chain is undeniably one of the most popular
and at the same time, the most controversial brand to date. While
there is a plethora of diehard McDonald’s fans, there is an equally
huge amount of scandals linked to it. Be it for the use of harmful
ingredients or bugs infested food, McDonalds have been in the
news for the wrong reasons more often than they would like to
admit.
So what happens when a brand such as McDonalds, who is
continuously under fire, starts a social media campaign? The
marketing campaign gets hijacked.
While
McDonalds
intended
its
#McDStories
and
#RonaldMcDonald hashtags to allow people to talk about how
awesome the brand is, people hijacked the same hashtags to
tell horrible stories related to the fast food chain. From getting
food poisoning to using inappropriate ingredients, the world
broke the internet with literally everything they could find
against McDonalds. The stories were already out there, but what
McDonalds did was provide each and every person online, a
perfect outlet to get their story heard.

USING SOCIAL MEDIA
NETWORKS THE WRONG WAY
by: Rida Sadiq
An easy way to rectify such a situation is to have a backup plan
ready. If you know you are going to receive more than your fair
share of negative responses, be prepared for it. Think of ways
to avoid having your campaign hijacked, treat the reviews
as constructive criticism and offer consumers some sort of
compensation.
Moving on, brands need to realize that the best thing about social
networks is the two-way communication that it proudly boasts
of. The main aim of networking is engagement. Having a ton of
followers at your networks is good, but it’s really useless if the
level of engagement is low or worse, non-existent.
The success of social media networks is not measured by the
“number of Likes” but instead by how often your followers
engage with you and how successfully you respond back to them.
You need to realize that a human element is compulsory even in
the online world. You cannot just set a social media management
tool to send out tweets and picture updates for you and automate
replies for the people who take the time out to talk to you.
As a brand, no matter how big you are, you not only need to
reply to everyone personally but also send out thank you notes
every now and then. Again, if you fail to do so, you will not only
www.moremag.pk
alienate your consumers by ignoring them but also, allow haters
to take over your campaigns and turn it against you.
A good example of the same problem is the recent Coca Cola’s
#MakeItHappy campaign. What Coke did was create a campaign
to demote negative messages that so often grace the internet. The
brand created hashtag #MakeItHappy and automated it to turn
negative tweets into positive, cutesy cartoon pictures and re-tweet
them. While the idea was excellent, Coca Cola failed to include a
human element to it.
Since it was a bot operating the campaign at the backend,
someone hijacked it and made it tweet quotes from Adolf Hitler’s
autobiography, Mein Kampf. Within hours, Coca Cola’s CSR
campaign turned into a hate campaign and the brand had to
suspend it immediately.
Not only are brands expected to engage with their audience on
a personal level, but they are also required to keep their tone
positive in light of negative criticism. With the introduction of
these networks, the PR responsibility of brand falls squarely on
the shoulders of the social media team.
Any amount of effort and resources put into advertisements will
all be rendered moot if your tone at social media networks is
anything less than polite. Traditionally, you could get away with
compensating or even ignoring a disgruntled customer quietly but
with online marketing, every bad review and the smallest of the
response to it is not only documented but it is in plain sight for
the world to see.
The biggest mistake that brands make while handling negative
criticism is that they ignore and delete negative comments or
worse, reply in kind. One of the leading multinational brands,
Nestle, made the same mistake a few years ago when it was
criticized for using Palm Oil.
Not only did Nestle threatened to delete any comments with
profile pictures of their altered logo but continued to be rude
and offensive throughout the day to anyone and everyone who
commented on their Facebook wall. Within a matter of hours, the
comments went viral and they were documented at every news
outlet, only to further damage the reputation and goodwill of the
brand.
On the same note, we have some of our local companies like
Ufone and K-Electric, which in spite of all the issues are available
on media networks almost throughout the day. Whatever the
problem may it be, these brands not only apologize to the unhappy
customer, but provide them with solutions, even if not immediate
ones.
How effective their solutions are or how hollow their apologies
are, is a different matter altogether. What is noteworthy here is
that they almost always reply instantly and stay polite no matter
how rude the consumer is. This might not result in a 100% happy
www.moremag.pk
customer 24/7 but it sure does make him a loyal one.
But this has not always been the case for our local companies.
Until a few years ago, Pakistani companies, new to the social
media scene, were making rookie mistakes too. There was a time
when Jazz (Mobilink) posted a photo of Asma Jahangir instead
of Bilquis Edhi in its post; a time when Ufone failed to inform its
customers of an impending service breakdown and then, further
exacerbated the situation by restricting comments on its Facebook
wall; and lastly, the time when Qubee Pakistan copied, word to
word, statuses of Pringles at its Facebook page.
Each and every blunder was not only caught within minutes of
posting but was documented and made viral by people, before
brands could even realize what had gone wrong.
With time, our local companies have learnt and have adopted the
social media fad with a more strategic approach. For example,
only recently has K-Electric launched a Complaint Ticket
Generation system for consumers to file complaints via social
media networks, a service previously available only through
SMS, calls and emails. With more and more Pakistanis finding
social media networks a convenient tool, this service by the utility
giant could not have been introduced at a better time.
Yet another easy trap to fall into, at social media networks,
is hopping onto ongoing trends. While it is tempting to take
advantage of trending topics and hashtags, doing so blindly, can
result in a backlash.
How a brand connects itself to a trending topic and uses it to its
advantage is an art in itself. Take for example, the much hyped
#TheDress black and blue or white and gold debate. As the
topic continued to break the internet and became part of heated
discussions globally, clothing stores stocking the dress itself used
the hashtag to bump up their sales.
Similarly, the Salvation Army took the same hashtag to very
creatively, not to mention successfully, promote its own, might
I add completely unrelated, message against domestic violence
and abuse.
On the other hand, a pizza brand DiGiorna Pizza adopted
hashtag #WhyIStayed to promote its own products. What they
unfortunately failed to realize was that the particular hashtag was
created to allow the domestic abuse survivors to share their stories
of oppression. The brand quickly rectified and apologized for
their mistake but not before their reputation took a significant hit.
Social media networks are like a double-edged sword with
extreme results. If you know how to make things work for you, the
advantages are limitless and not to mention, affordable. However,
if you get caught up in the social frenzy, without a proper strategy
in place, the results can be equally catastrophic. Where it takes
decades to build a brand name offline, it takes seconds to shatter
the reputation online.

Virtual Reality Headsets
?
The Next ‘Big’ Thing
by: Adil Islam
W
ith the smartphone market hitting its saturation
point, the big guns Samsung and Apple
facing cutthroat competition from Chinese
competitors, growth has steadily stalled in each quarter.
The dynamics are changing and companies are looking for
other products that would continue to fill up their money
coffers.
Looking at recent acquisitions and the money being
poured into development of virtual reality software and
headsets, it seems that companies are willing to bet their
stakes on VR technology. Facebook has bought Oculus
Rift, Microsoft has HoloLens, HTC has Vive and Sony
has Morpheus. The heat of the battle has just begun and
all it needs is a successful year. ‘2016’ will be the make
or break year for VR headsets because that’s when the
products start to roll out. Consumer spending on virtual
reality hardware and software could reach $21.8 billion
by the year 2020, according to a new report from market
research and consulting firm Tractica. Software and
entertainment companies are already prepping for the
advent of this new technology. Pixar will release a film
“Henry” specifically for it, this gives you an idea how well
anticipated virtual reality technology is.
What is Virtual Reality?
If you’re like me, you used to think Virtual Reality was
a silly sci-fi concept, but lately you’ve been hearing it
mentioned by serious people, and you don’t really quite
get it.
There are a few reasons why people confuse Virtual
Reality:
1. We associate Virtual Reality with movies: - Matrix
and Avatar comes to mind that makes it sound
fictional to us.

3.
VR is a broad topic
We use VR in our lives but we don’t actually realize
it- Because of this phenomenon, Virtual Reality
often sounds like a mythical future prediction more
than a reality. At the same time, it makes it sound
like a pop concept from the past that never came to
fruition. It is being used for 3D printing, product
design and CAD. And in Pakistan, you can see it
being used for Urban Design.
So let’s clear things up. First, stop thinking of dimensions
or robots. Computer scientist Jonathan Steuer defined VR
as “the extent to which one feels present in the mediated
environment, rather than in the immediate physical
environment.” In a broader sense, the user is oblivious
to the real environment and instead acts according to the
mediated environment. Virtual reality can recreate sensory
experiences, which include virtual taste, sight, smell,
sound, and touch. In the VR environment, the user feels
‘immersed’.
Secondly, if you had watched the blockbuster Interstellar
you must have heard the term ‘singularity’, this term has
been used in math to describe a situation where normal
rules no longer apply. It’s been used in physics to describe
a phenomenon like an infinitely small, dense black hole
or the point we were all squished into right before the Big
Bang. Again, situations where the usual rules don’t apply.
It can be applied to virtual reality. You can create your own
world with no limitations at all. You can create a world
where the surroundings respond to your gestures. Or you
can create a world that mimics real life experience so that
you can enhance your understanding of the context and
gain vital experience in the real world.
to stay. It faces a tough road, as it will have to battle
preferences like of a wide screen TV. However with the
money being pumped in it is a matter of time that VR
headsets will take over.
There are many types of VR:
1.
Fully immersive
This provides a complete VR experience. With the right
equipment, a richly detailed world is there for you to
explore.
2.
Non Immersive
A realistic flight simulator is an example of this one. Some
people do not prefer complete ‘immersion’. They don’t
take you on an adventure with virtual experiences but its
attractive than a simple drawing.
3.Collaborative
The aforementioned types take you closer to the virtual
world but it does not let you share it with another person.
Games like Minecraft are an example of it. Do they count
as VR? Yes to an extent, since its believable, interactive,
computer created and explorable.
4.
Web based
This form implies that there ought to be new ways
to access real reality—new ways to find and publish
information, shop, and share thoughts, ideas, and
experiences with friends through social media. This idea
stems from the Facebook’s ownership of the Oculus Rift
5.
Augmented Reality
This type is all about connecting the real world we
experience to the world of information on the World Wide
Web.
Where do we stand as of now?
The Equipment?
This actually depends on the ‘immersion’ that the user
wants. The experience that the user wants can be enhanced
or simplified according to the needs.
The most important by far is the Virtual Reality headsets.
The difference between a monitor and VR headset is that
the latter allows you to experience the screen 360 degrees
and gives you the experience of being in that world. Each
of the firms that are interested in VR have headsets in their
arsenal but the most impressive ones are of Oculus Rift
and HTC’s Vive. The downside to this piece of equipment
is the health risks. Experts claim that VR headsets will
greatly decrease eyesight and also cause motion sickness.
The scene where Cooper is entering the singularity in the movie
‘Interstellar’
Not to take some gloss of this upcoming technology but
VR has been around for some time now. However, after
the acquisition of Oculus Rift by Facebook that garnered
interest of everyone. VR is in its infancy but it’s here

the response of the community when they become widely
available.
The next company that is garnering some buzz is HTC’s
Vive where it was premiered at London play hubs where
the response, again, was very positive. So clearly, VR is
here to stay and is probably the next big thing and you
don’t need me to tell you that again.
As mentioned earlier, the big guns have acquired or are
developing VR technology and it’s a matter of time before
the war starts. Smartphone markets have reached saturation
and it’s a race between stalwarts to get the maximum of the
market as quickly as possible. We gave you the preview of
the biggest fight of 2016.

INTERVIEW
Want to buy a
movie ticket
online? Bookme is
here!
W
ith the spread of internet and smart gadgets in
Pakistan, a segment of our people is more willing
to adopt new ways of doing things. Booking tickets
online for cinema, metro buses is something new in Pakistan
which can of course save you a lot of time and energy. To know
how well it is going, we sent a query to the CEO & Founder of
bookme.pk, Mr. Faizan Aslam to know what kind of experience
he has had so far. Following is what he shared;
How are the people responding towards Bookme.pk and what
is the average daily reservation figure for both movies and Bus
tickets?
We have been receiving excellent response from the market
since bookme's inception. Initially we were relying on word of
mouth but now we have started advertising and in last 2 months,
our sales grew 12 times. Moreover, bookme has now become a
platform for every new local movie regarding online ticketing.
In last 3 weeks we did activation campaigns for 3 local movies,
including Bin Roye. Karachi se Lahore and Dekh Magar Pyaar Se.
We invited the cast to interact with people, educate them about
online ticketing and how this helps you to avoid hassle at ticket
terminals.
For the local transport, many major bus companies have bookme
logo on every ticket that is being printed. All this has brought
a huge sale number for us. Right now we get about 8000 calls
everyday and around 2000 to 3000 orders.
by: Sumaira Mudassar
How do you manage to deliver the tickets to people?
Delivering that much tickets is a challenge. We have recently
started e-ticketing for few cinemas and bus companies. Adding
a couple more this month. Home delivery is convenient for
customers so we will keep that option available.
How do you see the online booking and reservations trend in
Pakistan in the coming years?
Its growing way faster than we thought, things will change
“Right now we get about 8000 calls everyday
and around 2000 to 3000 orders”
in next 1 year. You will see lots of companies coming into
this domain. People will be more educated and comfortable
transacting online.
Do you plan to expand online bookings for the air tickets or
anything else in the future?
We started trains 2 days back, can't say anything about airlines at
this time.
What is the ratio of smartphone and desktop ticket buying
pattern?
Mobile web is leading with about 70% of orders coming from
that.
What types of movies the majority of the three metropolitans
prefer?
Bollywood has the biggest impact, may be because it caters the
largest audience. Lollywood is second and hollywood comes at
last.

Are there any challenges in
running an online ticket
selling platform?
Yes there are many, every
company works in a different
way. Many don't’ have a good
infrastructure. Server down
times and other technical
issues occur often but this is
a starting point. Things will
be more smoother in coming
years, just like India. We are
just 5 years behind.

TECHNOLOGY
Without any doubt, there are various
capabilities, attributes, and special
features that merge into single device
resulting into a world of possibilities
unlike anything before in the history
W
e are the generation who has grown up listening to
the elders that technology is not bad in itself rather
its the human being to blame who make use of stagnant devices to serve its ill purposes and surely, same is the case
with Drone Technology.
Whenever the word ‘drone’ is being spoken, a picture of terror,
casualties and violence makes a sketch into the mind, at least
in my case or most probably for a good chunk of Pakistani’s as
well. Probably this is because of the fact that the Northern areas
of our country have been bombarded with US drones since past
9 years that result in many assassinations but are all the victims
terrorists? Well, this is what the media tells but who can read
between the lines!
However, when we take a look at the developed countries of the
world, it comes out that drone is actually a marveling technology
that is something more than what is discussed above. Today, this
technology is being used not only by governments and militaries
for the surveillance but also by different business firms and even
individuals for varying purposes.
by: Saleha Khan
A couple of months ago, Sindh Police purchased GPS drones in
an effort to track down bandits and robbers in Sukkur city which
surely an impressive step to ensure efficiency.
Let’s move out of that and dig into some of the latest and interesting but most importantly the positive aspects of using the
drone technology to cultivate a productive and advantageous
perception amongst the people.
Facebook introduces its own drone to provide internet access
to people:
The largest social network obviously the Facebook has recently
introduced its own drone that aims to supply the internet signals
to the remote areas of the world, especially for the developing
countries.
This drone has been made in extension to the Facebook’s project
Internet.org which is already extended to several countries
including Pakistan.
You might have heard about the drones delivery services that
are being used by companies like Amazon to deliver products
and also about the drones that provide the full coverage of an
incident or event to the news channels.
Yet these are not the developed countries only who are adopting this technology but the developing countries like Pakistan
are equally up to utilize the unusual capabilities of these tiny
machines.
Recently, Pakistan has joined the list of those 10 countries (including US, Israel, and Russia) of the world who locally develop
armed drones.

The name of this drone technology is Aquila. It has a heavy

wingspan of a Boeing 737 (passenger plane) and despite this, it’s
weight is around 450 Kilograms.
Facebook’s engineering lab has disclosed that this drone is made
with carbon fiber. When this material undergoes the heat, it
becomes stronger than the steel without changes in its weight. As
soon as it launches in the air, it can acquire the altitude of 60,000
to 90,000 feet. Hence, it is far away from the airplanes flying
height.
Another stunning feature of Facebook Drone is no fuel requirement as it is equipped with the solar panels for charging. It has
the ability to provide the internet signals to the people of the
earth in a 50 km of radius.
The small dishes and towers will receive the signals sent via
drone and will convert them to Wi-Fi or LTE network so that
people may easily use it. Facebook has also said that data and
information can be transferred from drone to drone and if it turns
out to be successful, soon the requirement for earthly internet
infrastructure will be minimized.
Moreover, this drone can be controlled from the earth yet it will
require the service of the telecom companies who are also seeing
this drone project optimistically and are saying that the internet
services through the drone will give new life to the telecommunication industry.
Mesmerizing sights of Pakistan glacier captured from a
drone camera went viral:
In a more recent incident, a Polish photographer David Kaszlikowski captured a series of stunning photographs of a glacier
in the Karakoram region of Pakistan while shooting an HBO
documentary.
During his three-week hiking in the Himalayas, Kaszlikowski
used a drone mounted camera to explore the remote surrounding ice field near the second-highest mountain in the world, K2
which could be highly risky and difficult to capture otherwise.
As soon as those breath-taking images uploaded on the internet,
the local, as well as international media, started reporting about
it, ultimately showing the beautiful aspect of Pakistan.

Drones for researching the impossible!
The researchers from New England recently used the remote-controlled drones to look into the details of something that
is highly risky to access by a human, the whales!
However, the drone did the job very easily while flying 10 feet
above the sea to expand the research regarding whales that
include their complex songs which can be heard for at least 20
minutes and surely one of nature’s great unsolved mysteries.
Drones in Agriculture
Today, drone technology is ready to take the place of physical
struggles, the tractors and harvesters as it is slowly becoming an
essential piece of farming equipment.
So now farmers around the world have actually started using
drones to get a birds-eye view of their fields and to monitor the
bringing something interesting for you. Most of the segments of
our lives will possibly be dominated by the flying drones in the
coming years as the manufacturers are already working on them.
Below are some areas where drones can make their way in the
coming years.
Shade Drones – To provide shelter with in rainy and sunny
weather conditions.
Early Warning Drones– to alert the authorities and the public
regarding an upcoming disaster by means of appropriate sensors
that can detect tiny changes in atmosphere or surrounding environments.
Comedian Drone - To performs random acts of comedy.
Magician Drone - To perform magic tricks in front of the public.
Hunting Drone – Forget the guns and have a joystick and a drone
to go for hunting with
your friends.
Missing Child Drone
– Much like a hunting
dog, to track the smell
of the child by means
of embedded sensors.
Advertising Drone- To
be used as advertisement to attract the
target audience.

– instead of costly
helicopters, drones can
do this job effectively.

condition of their crops. Not only this but this little helicopter
possesses the capabilities to precisely sprinkle fertilizer and
pesticides throughout the fields.
Not only this piece of gadgetry is relatively cheap as compared
to the heavy machinery for farming but is also containing advanced sensors and capabilities, resulting into increased yields
and reducing crop damage.
The Future of Drones
Without any doubt, there are various capabilities, attributes, and
special features that merge into single device resulting into a
world of possibilities unlike anything before in the history.
Home Inspection
Drones – to keep an
eye on your home even
when you are out.
Trash Removal Drones – To get rid of trash easily.
Mosquito-Free Zone Drones – Specially for countries like Pakistan where Malaria and Dengue prevails
Concluding Thoughts
If we look at the above-mentioned aspects of drone technology,
eventually we will be definitely compelled to find the positive
uses far outweigh than the negative ones. This whole consideration can also help in drawing the attention of the tech companies and even the individuals to develop the right systems for
making the lives even easier for the mankind and even looking
beyond these possibilities.
If you are a fan of this technology then the future must be

Huawei Y3, Huawei Y5 & Huawei Y635
Three of the latest aggressive Smartphones
by: More Team
he Chinese multinational Huawei introduced a handful of new smartphones a couple of months ago and out of them, the
three are Huawei Y3, Huawei Y5, and Huawei Y635.
All of these devices of 'Y' series are equipped with some nice features and most importantly, these are also budget
friendly. Let's dig into the details of these devices to know what the company aims to offer with the freshly released lineup.
T
HUAWEI Y3
H
uawei Y3 has made its way to
Pakistan with an official release
last month and it is offered by the
company with a competitive price tag of Rs.
8,499.
Major improvements
The major change in Huawei Y3 is basically
the introduction of 2 megapixels front camera
which was absent in the last year’s version
of its sibling Ascend Y330. Secondly there is
also improvement in the battery segment with
1730mAh mAh instead of 1500 mAh.
Build & Design
It is easy to hold device having a 4.0 inches
display screen and a smooth yet textured
plastic rear. The volume rocker and power
button are placed on the right side of the
device while 3.5mm audio jack and micro
USB slot are deployed on the top.
Under the rear, there are Dual SIM slots, one
for regular SIM card, and the other for Micro
SIM. Additionally you are having microSD
card slot as well to expand the memory up to
32 GB.
The device uses a removable battery pack so
that you may keep an extra pack with you to
replace it when required.
Huawei Y3 comes in four basic color slots,
i.e. Black, White, Red and Blue.
Performance and User
Interface
Y3 runs on Google’s Android
4.4.4 KitKat with Huawei’s
own “Emotion UI” on top. It
is powered Quad-core 1.2 GHz
Cortex-A7 along with 512 MB
RAM. The internal memory is

touchscreen. The user interface is
also friendly which works pretty fast unless go for some hefty games like Fast Racing 3D and other such apps.
It allows to add multiple home screens for your convenience and you can even change the layouts. Most importantly, in order
to retain the device from getting slow, there a built-in function of one-touch optimization through which you can optimize its
processing. If you are fond of texting most of the time then this device is made for you as it is having such a detailed options

The rear camera of this device is 5-megapixel

The front camera of 2-megapixels offers to add an

Apart from Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB
connectivity, Y3 provides 3G support as
well. Lastly, the 1730 mAh battery is actually
impressive part about this device as usually
screen sizes of 4.5 inches hold this much battery

lasting battery.
All in all, taking into account the features and
price tag, it can be said that Huawei Y3 is one of
the nicest budget phone available in the market.

T
he Huawei Ascend Y5 is another new arrival in the category of budget smartphones
which is available across the country with a low price of Rs. 10,999.
Since the phone holds a 4.5 inches display screen, it provides a comfortable handheld experience with easy reach by means of a single hand.
The phone gives a sturdy look in the first sight and uses removable plastic rear, removable
battery, two micro SIM slots as well as a microSD card slot to provide extra storage.
Major improvements
Huawei Y5 is much similar to the last year's
version of Huawei Ascend Y550.
It basically aims to provide 3G connectivity
under a budget price slot so that you may per-

form speedy web browsing on-the-go well.
Additionally, Y5 comes with an advanced
rear camera of 8 megapixels rather than 5
megapixels while the front facing camera is
same i.e 2 megapixels.
Build & Design
Apparently, the device is as similar as its sibling Ascend Y550 with a same 4.5 inches screen
and a resolution of 480x854. The volume rocker and power buttons are deployed on the righthand side with a shiny silver coating on them. A micro USB port for charging and the 3.5mm
audio jack are occupying the top area of the device. The rear (light in weight) plastic covers
lends its upper area to the dual Flash and 8 megapixels camera. The missing part about the
device is the lack of light and proximity sensors.
OS & User Interface
Huawei Y5 runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat version with company's own EMUI
3.0 Lite on top. It comes with some
nice and handful apps like the screen
lock, Task manager, TouchPal X, EMUI

Additionally there are some social
networking apps already installed in the
device like Facebook and Twitter while
Google apps including Google Drive,

it can extend the room for you up to 32 GB with the help of external memory card slot. The user experience is responsive to the

Camera
As mentioned above, Huawei Y5 packs an 8-megapixel rear
camera which is particularly impressive as it is actually difficult
to find this much camera lens in the same price tag. You can
choose to shoot at full resolution in 8M(4:3), 6M (16:9), 6M
(1:1) or can also select lower resolution of 5m and 3.8 M.
You can touch the screen to adjust focus in the captured image
while the results contain good clarity in macro shots.
Additionally, there are options to adjust the function of volume
button according to camera requirements and you can enable
'Touch to Capture' feature to avoid the hassle of pressing the
shutter button.
A 2-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calling
is also acceptable which gives the option to add audio note and
watermark as well. The included HDR mode is something useful
as it blesses the captured images.
Huawei Ascend Y635
H
uawei Ascend Y635 was
unveiled during the popular
tech event of Mobile World
Congress 2015 that took place a few
months ago in Barcelona, Spain.
This smartphone recently made its way to
Pakistani market and it is the successor
of Huawei Ascend Y625. The major
upgradation in Huawei Y635 is its 4G
compatibility.
The overall build of this device is sturdy
just like the other smartphones of
Y-series. From the front, you may get
confused from its looks as it resembles a
lot with Huawei Honor 4C. It offers only
two basic color slots i.e. black and white
and comes with a mediocre price tag of
Rs. 15,750.
The Interface
With Android 4.4.4 Kitkat, Huawei
has coated Y635 with its own
Emotion 3.0 UI on the top. It is
pretty simple to use for the first
time users. You can add up to 10
home screens on the user interface
with tap and hold on the screen.
The drop-down notification panel
holds plenty of shortcut icons
apart from the traditional ones like
Wifi Hotspot, Lock Screen, Ultra
Battery, Screenshot and Auto-sync
icons, making the life easier for the
user. Interestingly, you can also
adjust the places of these icons
according to your feasibility by means of ‘Edit’ option.

In Antutu Benchmark testing, Huawei Y635 got
21105 score which means that this device is adequately fast in terms of performance.
However, the result of both of these camera
is not that bad. Majority of the devices
available in the market offer the Panoramic
mode of capturing images from the rear
camera but interestingly, Y635 does this job
from the front camera as well so that you
may capture your own panoramic selfies.
Unfortunately, there is no face beauty mode
for the rear and front cameras so either you are supposed to stick with your
original captured image or just download some relative beauty apps for
camera from the Play Store.
Multimedia and Gaming
we downloaded some games in Huawei Y635 in order to
test the graphics and performance of the device. Everything
worked nice and smooth without any glitches. Here is the
screenshot of the game that we enjoyed playing on this
device.
Gaming
www.moremag.pk
The sound quality of the device is really good and its loud
too which is appropriate for listening to music. However, If
you want to watch movies and dramas on this device, well,
you can surely do this but not for a longer period of time
due to a bit low resolution that will make your eyes tired.

What do Future
Scenario based
Movies tell
us about our
Future?
by: Aqeel Awan
I
n 1989, Robert Zemeckis directed the sequel of Back to
the future movie in which a future year was shown. Marty
McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, time travels to the year
2015. The movie received high ratings, extraordinary reviews and
popularity among movie fans. The picture of 2015 shown in this
movie involved massive technological advancements, devices that
were mere dreams back in 1989. Since we now live in 2015, it can
be noticed how accurate the predictions of human future were in
the movie which can also help assess the validity of predictions in
other future-scenario based movies.
Many of the technological advancements that were shown in the
movie have been achieved and in many ways what the writers
and director of the movie could not even think of is part of the
2015’s technological world. On the other hand, some predictions
have not become a reality as yet, for example, flying vehicles becoming a daily routine travel for everyone. But broadly speaking,
the movie was quite accurate in predicting one aspect of the human-future which is immensely advanced technology becoming
a part of our everyday life.
Taking the aforementioned case as a precedence that movies can
and have predicted human future with quite high accuracy level,
one can look into present day future-scenarios based movies to
see what movies, as a popular voice, is telling or predicting about
our future. We are currently experiencing vast technological
improvements as was predicted in movies of 90s and before. And
this aspect of technological advancements continues to innovate
further and is continuously changing our lives. So, let’s look at
three examples of post 2000 movies and see what they tell us
about human future.
Divergent
Divergent was released in 2014. The movie pictures a scenario in
which conflicts, fights and wars have gone to such an extent that
much of the human race has extinguished. In such a scenario,
people of one city adopt the following strategy to continue living:
a) they create a wall around the city to avoid further conflicts
with the savages outside that city, b) they create 5 factions
(Erudite, Dauntless, Abnegation, Amity and Candor) among
www.moremag.pk
Divergent
humans to create a clear divide in the authorities, responsibilities and controls of an individual or a group, c) people who do
not fall under a faction remain factionless and helpless too and
whosoever falls naturally among more than one faction is called a
divergent, considered a threat and hence is killed.
What this movie predicts is the dominance of the belief in a
closed society, clear divisions among human race based on their
skills and capacities, and a continued belief of sidelining and/or
eventually killing the outlier. The dominant idea here is of having
clear divide among human beings. Though this effort has practically been done throughout the history, but has never been quite
as successful as the movie predicts. For example, Hinduism as a
religion creates four hierarchical divisions (Brahmans, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and Shudras), but the Hindu society nevertheless has
always remained quite fused throughout its existence. Similarly,
capitalism VS communism tried to divide the world into two, but
neither the humans remained divided as such nor the apparent
division continued for long. But, this movie does propose that
this could be the future of the human existence.
However, in its sequel Insurgent, the story does take a slight turn
where the value of the divergents is upheld and it is propagated that divergents reflect the essence of humans, i.e., they are
multitalented creatures. Moreover, it shows that the whole walled
city and the factions-creation was an experiment performed by a
world that exists outside of the city given in the movie. However,
that only reflects the vast developments expected in technology
with which humans could ever perform such a large scale experiment. It also shows that factions once created would be celebrated by the elite and their demise would be resisted strongly.
Elysium and Oblivion
Although, Divergent showed divisions among humans, but value
system especially emotions like love, sacrifice and affection continued to live among people, though differently in each faction.
However, Elysium is one such movie that shows a loss of even
these moral values and emotions. The movie Elysium is based
on a scenario in which Earth is no longer suitable for a healthy
human living, so the rich or elite class moves to another planet
AUGUST 2015

43
and creates a healthy life there. The poor class is left to suffer
on the Earth. Neither the rich nor the poor show any sense of
traditional morality and express any emotions of care, love and
sacrifice. Therefore, based on this movie, another feature that can
they possess an average American intelligence level. However, as
they enter the future world, their intelligence level turns out to
be drastically superior to the rest of the world. There is no gain
of intelligence in the two time-travelers. However, the scenario
shows a great loss of intelligence in the future world’s humans.
This is even more depressing than the other movies. With all the
scientific growth and technological improvements, humans like
Elysium
be inferred about human future is the immense and sad loss of
values and emotions.
Another similar example of such movies where it is expected
that the human race would build a life outside the planet Earth
is Oblivion. The idea presented in the movie is also quite similar
that Earth is no longer suitable for a healthy hygienic life so those
who could afford it, which is primarily the social and political elite, move to another planet. It all becomes possible with
technology. However, it also leads to a loss of morality and sense
Idiocracy
to think we are developing more as intelligent creatures. However, even the scientific trend shows that we are losing much of
our intelligence over time. There are several hypothesis presented
for the loss. However, what is certain is that humans that exist
today do not possess the intelligence level of those who lived five
centuries ago and humans who would come five centuries from
now would also possess a different level of intelligence.
Oblivion
of care, sacrifice and human development. There are many other
famous movies, e.g., After Earth, and others that show similar
scenarios. Could such a thought become a reality? It remains to
be seen as only time can reveal what humanity is leading itself.
Idiocracy
Finally, the movie Idiocracy shows a downfall of intelligence
among humans in future. In the movie, a solider and a singer
from time travel from 2007 to a future world. In 2007’s world,
44

AUGUST 2015
In short, in all these movies, it is considered obvious that technological advancements have not come to an end. We shall experience even more radical changes and developments in the field of
technology. However, each of these and many other such movies
also show that human race would also be paying heavy costs in
the form of losing several important human traits. Some predict
that intelligence would be lost, while other see a demise of values
and emotions. Therefore, even though we may celebrate the
technology, what we, as humans, might also want to look for is
the emphasis on divisions among humans, lack of emotions and
value systems, and significant loss of intelligence among future
humans.

Now you can send
self-destructing Gmail
emails with Dmail
Dmail is basically a Chrome extension that allows Gmail users
to remove any sent email after sending. It comes with a self-destructing timer so that the sent email becomes unavailable
according to desired time set by the user.
Dmail acts like a normal e-mail in which you can create, send
and receive messages. But there are following other unique
features of this extension which separate it from the common
gmail emails.
•
•
•
•
In Dmail you can assign each email to projects and tasks list.
You can set priority levels.
You can set a due date to your mail to deal with it in the future or to expect a reply from the receiver of that particular mail. If due
date passes, you will get a notification in your dashboard about that mail.
The email will not disappear or go out of sight until it has been dealt with.
Another clever feature of Dmail is its auto installation option for the receiver if he
does not have the Dmail extension.

Want a car like Tesla's Model S (or the upcoming Model 3) but can’t quite afford the pricey electric supercar? As always, China has
the answer with a lower cost clone that looks surprisingly good. But what’s under the hood?
The new Youxia X is coming up with three versions 40kWh, 60kWh or 85kWh battery packs while the biggest pack is said to provide
an approximated range of 285 miles.
The Youxia X has a large LCD screen which is mounted over the place of traditional
dash controls and it is said to run on Android 5.1 Lollipop Operating system.
Although, performance wise, it is not as outstanding as the amazing Tesla Model S, but
the manufacturers claim that it has an acceleration of zero to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds.
Youxia X will be produced
in 2016 and it will be delivered to the markets in 2017, according to the
company officials.
So what about the price of Youxia X? Well, this
electric car is expected to lie between $32,000
to $48,000 which is way cheaper than Tesla's
Model S ranging from $75,000 to $85,000.
