GENERAL INFORMATION We are delighted that you have decided to visit our country and wish you a warm welcome. All nations love their country and consider it to be the most beautiful of all. The Croats call their country “Our beautiful Homeland”, after the opening verses of the Croatian national anthem. The Republic of Croatia is a European parliamentary state and a part of European political and cultural history. It is classified as one of the medium-sized European countries such as Denmark, Ireland, Slovakia and Switzerland. Croatia is a land of open frontiers and simple customs regulations. It is also a peaceful country and one that is respectful towards its guests. We strive to make our country beautiful to all those who visit it and we do our best to ensure that visitors take only beautiful memories home with them. Geographic position Croatia occupies the largest part of the eastern coast of the Adriatic sea which, as a part of the Mediterranean sea, penetrates deepest into European soil. Croatia’s shoreline and numerous islands enjoy the majority of the Adriatic coastline. The narrow Dinara mountain range separates the country’s Mediterranean region from its central European continental part, which spans from the easterly edges of the Alps in the North-West to the shores of the Danube in the East, encompassing the southern part of the fertile Pannonian lowlands. Surface area The mainland covers an area of 56,594 km2. Territorial waters cover a surface area of 31,067 km2. Population Croatia has 4,429,078 inhabitants. Demographics The majority of the population are Croats, with the largest minorities being Serbs, Bosnians, Slovenes, Hungarians, Czechs, Italians and Albanians. System of government Croatia is a multi-party parliamentary republic. Welcome to Croatia! Capital With 779,145 inhabitants, Zagreb is the economic, transport, cultural and academic centre of the country. 2 1.12.2010. 16:11: 2010 en.indd 3 USEFUL INFORMATION Length of the coastline 6,278 km, of which 4,398 km is made up of island coastlines, solitary rocks and reefs. Up to five pets can be imported at border crossings approved for the circulation of certain house pets, whilst the import of larger numbers of animals must be made at a border crossing where there is a border veterinary inspection. The importation of a maximum of five animals can be considered as non-commercial. The animals must be subjected to an identification and document inspection by a customs official at a border crossing of the Republic of Croatia. These animals will not be considered a commodity and must be accompanied by their owner or a person authorised by the owner to accompany them for the entirety of the trip. Please check, for instance, whether your pet has been vaccinated, that is, re-vaccinated, on time, whether an antibody titer test has been performed and whether it has a valid passport or veterinary certificate. If your pet does not meet these criteria, then your entry into the Republic of Croatian may be denied, that is, your pet can be returned to the country of origin or quarantined at the permitted border crossing. The owner will bear all costs arising from the implementation of these measures. In line with the Regulations on veterinary conditions for the non-commercial transportation of pets, the following animals species are considered as pets: dogs, cats, pet ferrets (Mustela putorius) from the marten family (Mustelidae), invertebrates (except for bees and crayfish), ornamental tropical fish, amphibians, reptiles, all bird species (except for poultry), rodents and rabbits. 4 1.12.2010. 16:11: 2010 en.indd 5 Health services and if the animals have been living in the same place since birth and have not been in contact with wild animals which may have been exposed to infections, or are travelling with their mother on whom they are still dependent. The skipper of a vessel which is brought into Croatia by road, or which is moored in a port or in some other approved location within the Republic of Croatia, must obtain the official vignette (sticker) and verify the list of crew members and passengers in the Harbour Master’s Office, or a branch office, prior to setting out to sea. The vignette (sticker) must be obtained for a vessel of 3 m or more in length, as well as for a vessel less than 3 m in length if its total propulsion power is of 5 kW or more. The official vignette (sticker) is not obligatory for a vessel using only oars/paddles, regardless of its length (such as a kayak, beach canoe, pedal boat or similar). The official vignette is not required by a vessel while in storage in a port or in any other such approved place in the Republic of Croatia. Life boats and jet skis are subject to the same regulations regarding the possession of a vignette. The official vignette (sticker) must be displayed in a visible location on the vessel. Its period of validity is one year from the date of issue. The counterfoil of the vignette must be affixed to the vessel’s list of persons. A vessel sailing in the Republic of Croatia must carry the following original documents: 2010 en.indd 13 List of crew members and passengers The list of crew and passengers includes crew members and passengers who are on the vessel, and is approved by signature and seal at the Harbour Master’s Office or branch office. If the skipper of a vessel does not intend to change crew during their stay in Croatian waters and while the official vignette is valid, they do not need to further report to the Harbour Master’s Office or branch office. Vessels with no facilities for extended stay (vessels with no bunks) do not need to have a crew member and passenger list. In Croatia, the skipper of a vessel can disembark the crew (or part thereof) with which they arrived from abroad, and take on a new crew, in which case they must register the change of crew with the Harbour Master’s Office, and leave Croatian waters with this new crew. 13 1.12.2010. 16:11: List of persons The List of Persons on vessels arriving by sea need not be presented at the same time as the official vignette is obtained, but can also be presented later when crew members are changed in Croatia. The skipper of a vessel intending to change their crew while sailing in the Republic of Croatia must present to the Harbour Master’s Office or branch office a list of persons who will be staying on the vessel during the validity of the vignette. The total number of persons included in the List of Persons cannot exceed double capacity plus 30% of the unit capacity of the vessel. The capacity of the vessel is defined according to the vessel’s documentation as issued by the competent authorities of the country under whose flag the vessel sails, and if the vessel’s documentation does not contain information about the capacity, the same shall be calculated in accordance with the Book of Rules on Boats and Yachts and the Rules and Regulations for the Statutory Certification of Boats and Yachts. The List of Persons is certified with the vignette counterfoil. The List of Persons can be completed in its entirety at the time the vignette is obtained, but it can also be completed later on, at the latest when individual persons included in the List first board the vessel. If the List is completed later on, each addition must be verified in the Harbour Master’s Office or its branch office. The number of changes of persons included in the List of Persons is unlimited. The List of Persons does not include persons staying on a vessel while the vessel is staying in a port or at anchor. The List of Persons does not include children less than 12 years of age, and they are not included in the maximum number of persons. 2010 en.indd 14 Registration of residence All foreigners entering the Republic of Croatia on a foreign vessel intended for sports and recreation, and who intend to use those vessels for accommodation, must register their residence in the Republic of Croatia only in the port or harbour in which they undergo border control. If a foreigner crosses the State border at one of the road border crossings and is transporting the vessel they intend to stay on, the marina where the vessel will be launched registers the residence. If the vessel is launched in a small port, the visitor must personally register their residence at the police station in authority of the territory. These regulations apply exclusively to vessels on which the foreigner will be accommodated. Foreigners whose vessels are berthed in one of the Croatian marinas must report their arrival in the marina. Sojourn tax Owners or users of vessels which are more than 5 m in length and have bunks are required to pay a flat rate sojourn tax. The sojourn tax may be paid in the Harbour Master’s Office or its branch office as a flat rate for residence periods of 8, 15, 30 and 90 days, or 1 year. The receipt for the flat rate sojourn tax should be kept on the vessel at all times and the skipper of the vessel must present it to the authorised person on demand. 14 1.12.2010. 16:11: Eurocity, Intercity and Euronight trains: Vessels sailing from the Republic of Croatia EC “Mimara”: Zagreb – Villach – Siegen – Zagreb EC “Croatia”: Zagreb – Vienna – Zagreb (via Slovenia) EN “Venezia”: Venice – Zagreb – Budapest (Moscow, Kiev, Bucharest) – Venice EN “Lisinski”: Zagreb – München – Zagreb IC “Zagreb”: Zagreb – Vienna (via Hungary) – Zagreb IC “Sava”: Belgrade – Zagreb – Villach – Munich – Belgrade IC “Kvarner”: Zagreb – Budapest – Zagreb IC “Drava”: Budapest – Osijek – Sarajevo – Budapest The skipper of a vessel due to sail out of the Republic of Croatia is under the following obligations: ––To pass border control at one of the ports open to international traffic; ––To verify the list of crew members and passengers at the Harbour Master’s Office or a branch thereof.
