Fanfare for New Prosperity & Dream
I am privileged to have this opportunity to highlight the significance of the LA International
Trade Fair 2010, which will run April 21-24 in the City of Los Angels, a real world center of
international trade, culture, learning and technology.
Showcasing a dynamic and colorful mix of unique Korean-made consumer products, the fair is
expected to provide strong momentum to benefit Los Angeles as well as Korean SMEs.
Business should be a two-way street. The Korean SME exhibitors in LA will be looking for new
market opportunities in their march to globalize their business, supported by the Korean
community in Los Angeles. At the same time, Los Angeles consumers and potential business
partners will obtain access to high quality, low-priced goods, characteristics that made Korea the
world’s ninth largest exporter in 2009.
In addition to the short-term business advantages, Korea and LA can share insight and
inspiration from this large-scale LA International Trade Fair 2010 as the global economic and
business paradigm undergoes an epic shift from an Atlantic to a Pacific axis.
LA, as the gateway to the Pacific, and Korea, as a business hub of Northeast Asia, share
complementarities to create tremendous new prosperity. The upcoming fair should become a
model and a launching pad for greater awareness, stronger ties and increased business at the
inception of the Pacific era.
Looking to the future, the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement, which is now pending ratification in
both the U.S. Congress and Korean legislature, will boost the potential for business collaboration
and cooperation between Korea and LA.

Shines With Creativity
Artistic bean technology was born for the first time
in Chodang-dong, Gangenung City, which is famous
for beancurd in Korea, with the establishment of
Choryo Art Shop.
The technology started from the time when beans
looking similar to human faces were discovered. It
expresses human faces on beans of different colors,
shapes, patterns and sizes and depicts Korean
traditional culture and folk performers utilizing grains
and Hanji (Korean traditional paper) as well as other
beans. The process includes drawing pictures on dried
beans, pouring chemicals on acrylic plates and
manufacturing cell phone straps, etc. after drying in
an electric kiln.
In recognition of its fresh ideas and creativity,
Choryo Art Shop has received a series of awards, such
as silver prize at the Gangwon-do Tourist Goods
Contest and encouragement prize at the Korea
Tourist Souvenir Contest in 2002. Choryo Art Shop's
products were also selected as one of the Korean
tourist souvenir masterpieces (No. 73) in October
2002.

'Galot' (or Galjungi) is Korean traditional clothing
worn by locals on Jeju Island as working clothes and
everyday dress. 'Gal' comes from 'Gam,' which means
persimmon in Korean, and 'Ot' means clothes in

Various tones of black or brown colors are obtained
from dye made from unripened persimmons. To
make high-quality Galot, much time and efforts
are required. First, hard unripened persimmons
must be cleaned and mashed. Next, fabric
should be soaked evenly in the persimmon
pulp, and then massaged in persimmon juice.
After removing small fragments of
persimmon, the fabric is laid on the grass and
dried under the sun without wrinkles. After that,
it should be soaked in water and dried again under
the sun. It needs to be dried and soaked in water
twice a day for seven to 10 days. The longer it stays in
the sun, the deeper the color it becomes.
