However, it is important for all of us to remember our past – not dwell in it mind you – but to acknowledge it, take stock of it, and realize that it is because of that past that we are where we are today. People tend to do this on milestone birthdays or anniversaries – you know take a look at what we are and where we are going and how we got to be who we are today – determine if there is anything we should change as we forge ahead. The Barton Foundation is celebrating one of those monumental anniversaries. It was 20 years ago that we were founded “...to assure, through funding, the ability to maintain the highest level of health and wellness care in the communities served by Barton Memorial Hospital facilities, independent from outside control.” We have delivered on that goal. I think back on those 21 Charter members and think of all the work they had ahead of them. They were literally starting with nothing and they charged forward with purpose because they thought it was imperative that we keep our hospital solvent and independent. Every year the Board of Trurstees has this same conversation and we feel these original ideals are still important and worth protecting. Our hospital is wonderful because it is our hospital. It isn’t owned by some big outside conglomerate that tells us what equipment we can or cannot buy – we have the power to decide what is important – and that is awesome. Over the years many have served on the Board of Trustees, many in the community have given their time and money to help deliver on this mission. And each of them helped to shape this organization into one that I am proud to lead today. Twenty years is a long time - it is important to acknowledge, thank, and pay tribute to those that have come before us and to say hey, “nice work,” without you we wouldn’t be here. And, hey, maybe when we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Foundation they will remember us, too. Mike Riley Chairman, Board of Trustees Barton Foundation The Gala Amidst twinkling lights in its new holiday timeframe, the Barton Foundation’s 2009 Gala was an extraordinary evening. More than 260 guests danced the night away at the black-tie event celebrated at the MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa. The elegant evening included a record-setting auction with $18, 675 raised for the Barton Community Clinic alone and overall $54,000 in net proceeds were raised to benefit the health of our community. The evening featured a performance of holiday songs by South Lake Tahoe’s 2009 Spirit of Philanthropy Award recipient award-winning Blue Ribbon Choir directed by Paul Kushner, stunning Ray Sidney is congratulated by Stacy Dingman, décor by Thran’s Flowers, the awarding of the first ever Spirit of Gala Committee Chair Philanthropy Awards to Ron and Francie Alling of Zephyr Cove and Ray Sidney of Big George Ventures, a lively auction of the gorgeous Christmas Trees and other great items, and dancing to the sounds of Hip Service. “It’s wonderful to have so many in our community come out for this event and give so generously, especially given the hard economic time we are experiencing. It is very rewarding knowing that our efforts are making a much needed difference in our community,” said Stacy Dingman, Chair of The Gala committee. The family-oriented event drew about 2,500 visitors who admired the trees and holiday décor, shopped in the Auxiliary’s gift shop, enjoyed a show on the Festival Stage, visited with Santa or went to one of many fantastic events! The Polar Express Event in particular was a highlight – with more than 540 kids and parents wearing their pajamas, hopping on a bus, enjoying the antics and cocoa at the Red Hut, and then making their way to the Festival. Once there, guests enjoyed a reading of the Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express by South Tahoe’s own Bob Grant, a performance by the local middle-school honor choir appropriately named The Belles of Christmas, a visit with Santa Claus, and a “first gift of Christmas.” A big thank you to the Festival Committee, especially chair Ann Jones, to the many volunteers, designers, seamstresses, performers, schools, and everyone who helped to make this event’s first year a great success. All in all the Festival was a magical event and we are already planning for next year! If you would like to get involved with the Festival please send us an email or give us a call in the Foundation Office at festival@bartonhealth.org or 530-543-5909. 3 Celebrating 20Years of Service This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Barton Foundation. Since our inception in 1990, individuals, community leaders, and businesses have partnered with the Foundation to help Barton Health change and save lives. 1990 By this time, the hospital was licensed for 81 beds, with a staff of 59 physicians, 15 dentists, and 320 employees. The construction provided additional space not only for the increased outpatient services, but allowed Barton to open up a 48 bed long term nursing care unit, which was desperately needed in South Lake Tahoe. 1997 Emerald Bay Trading Co. partnered with the Foundation for the “Special Tradition” Christmas party for families. 1994 Art Committee Chairperson Bill Ledbetter and his committee launched another project in support of environmental design. Through the creative efforts of many local artists, the committee selected 100 pieces of art for permanent placement in the hospital. In addition to this program, visitors today can also enjoy the gallery provided by the Tahoe Art League, located in the Snowflake Lobby. This event continued until 2003 where it moved to the Heavenly Village and has now evolved into this year’s first annual Festival of Trees and Lights. 1998 The Ledbetter Play Area and Olson Play Room opened at the Hospital giving children and families a home-like environment in which to play, read, and relax. 2001 The Foundation gave $100,000 to Barton Health to fund the new Emergency Room Helipad which facilitates care flights outside the area in emergencies. 2002 Thanks in large part to Martha Barneson’s elk meatloaf, the Barton Foundation received a very generous gift of $231,000 from Bill and Ruth Hanan who owned a home at the Lake. $131,000 of the funds went to support the Healing Design project and the balance benefitted the Foundation’s Endowment. 1995 The first annual Barton Foundation Golf Tournament was held at Genoa Lakes Golf Course. The first years were spearheaded by Trustee Martha Barneson with support from Jeff Dingman, grandson of the late Margaret Park Pruett. Since its inception the event has raised more than $520,000 for Hospice services and the Endowment Fund. 2004 Barton Foundation hosted its first annual Wine Tasting Auction at Edgewood Tahoe. Past vintners include; Flora Springs, Markham Vineyards, Freemark Abbey, and Robert Stemler. Since its inception this event has raised more than $128,000 for the Endowment. The board decidedly accepted the task of fundraising for a program called 5 are underserved and/or can have the greatest impact on the health of our community at large. The grants were given at the first annual Philanthropy Day Celebration on November 5th. The Family Birthing Center remodel is now complete, after several years of planning and hard work. The Family Birthing Center now offers single-room maternity care in beautiful, freshly decorated rooms which include “Healing Design”. The concept is to transform the typical hospital environment from one of white walls, hospital sights and sounds to one of tranquility and healing. To date, the Foundation has given the hospital more than $260,000 to support healing design and it remains a “pet project” of the Foundation today. 2005 The Foundation hosted its first ever bereavement camp serving children between 7-14 years of age who have lost a loved one. The two-day camp is free of charge and includes a mix of fun and healing activities for the kids to enjoy. In 2009, we hosted 24 campers and we plan to make this an annual event. 2006 Ethel Mae Haldan donated $200,000 to fund the Family Birthing Center. The remodel of this area of the hospital includes private birthing suites and spa-like environments. It will be completed in February 2010. 2007 The Foundation granted over $20,000 to Barton Employees through its Friend in Need Program. Most of these gifts were to victims of the Angora Fire. 2008 In 2008, the Ledbetter Family pledged $90,000 to develop a garden adjacent to the new Rehabilitation Center and Skilled Nursing Facility entrances. In memory of William, Beverlee, and Erica Ledbetter the Healing Garden includes a soothing waterfall, benches, paths, and a mini-labyrinth to provide guests, staff, and patients a scenic place to reflect. 2009 The Barton Foundation awarded nearly $23,000 in Barton Health Grants to provide funding to programs and organizations that benefit those communities that new sleeper sofas to accommodate family members; birthing tubs in some rooms; flat screen televisions; and a new Infant Security System. The Barton Foundation embarked on a campaign to increase awareness about and raise funds for the Barton Community Clinic. Proceeds from the Festival of Trees and Lights, The Gala and donations from the American Century Championship/NBC resulted in a total donation of $45,000 to the Barton Community Clinic and the health of the uninsured and under-insured in our area. Philanthropy is defined as the “love of man kind” and through the years, our community has shown through its actions and support that we truly do care about our neighbors. Almost 50 years ago, philanthropy was the seed that inspired our hospital and which grew to become Barton Health. This same passion to serve others is what started the Barton Foundation and it still motivates us today. We are deeply committed to improving the health of the South Lake Tahoe area and to moving Barton Health into the future. We are deeply indebted to the businesses and individuals who have offered their support throughout the years – they have truly made a difference in the lives of so many people. The Barton Buzzzz... They tied the knot on New Year’s Day. Congratulations! The Joint Commission visited Barton Health in early December and gave us an approval for 3 full years. Everyone at Barton should be congratulated for a job well done. Barton received a grant of more than $400,000 to fund Nursing Education in 2010. Way to go Barton University. Long-time Barton Foundation Trustees Mike Bradford and Annetta Chester resigned at the end of their terms in 2009. We thank them for their service and dedication. Through four free community H1N1 (Swine) flu vaccination clinics, Barton Health saw 2,088 community members. We are proud to be able to offer this service to our community. Our nurses, pharmacists, managers and public relations crew worked hard to make the events convenient and free for our neighbors. Our partners, El Dorado County Public Health and Lake Tahoe Unified School District were extremely helpful in our endeavor. 7 A Tradition of Generosity Spanning more than 45-years, philanthropy has become a solid tradition at Barton Health and has helped ensure our continued independence and strength. We are so fortunate that we have a community that values and supports our mission of providing high quality, cost effective, compassionate care, using the latest technology within our resources. 2009 Gifts Last year, the Barton Foundation raised more than $450,000 to help support the health of our community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible! Through your gifts to the Barton Foundation, you become part of a family of contributors whose gifts enhance the quality of the healthcare in our community.
