Message FROM THE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION
A CALL FOR INPUT
FROM OUR YOUTH
Be a part of the solution
D
ainfern Golf and Country Estate has matured since
its inception some 23 years back. Many families
chose this Estate as an ideal and safe environment
in which to raise their young children. These
original children have since matured into teenagers and
young adults and we are seeing that there’s a need for new
facilities to be introduced to the Estate to meet the changing
dynamics of our community.
• Youth Section in the Sports Clubs (Running, Cycling etc)
• Talent exposure
• Outings (Paintball etc)
• An Auditorium – a centre of celebration
• Art Studio
• Organisation of Camps
• Discos
There are so many positive experiences that can come out
of establishing a Youth Forum for our community and we
encourage all teenagers, parents and children to put forward
their ideas and requests. This is the foundation stage – an
excellent place to establish what will work and what won’t.
We would also like to encourage anyone who would like to put
themselves forward to be on a Youth Committee to send your
name, age and contact details to Lynn Muller of the Dainfern
Homeowners Association.
A few of the stakeholders and service providers of the Estate
have met to brainstorm how best to provide solutions, but
it soon became obvious that any plans made would be
meaningless unless there was input from the very people who
are in need of these new facilities. The plans should not only
be made in consultation with the youth but, in fact, be led by a
Youth Committee.
A survey amongst some of our children has revealed a wish list
– these are some of the items that they felt would add meaning
to their lives:
• A place to do supervised homework
• Computer Centre
• Library
• Pool table, Ping pong (table tennis), Fuzeball
• Music Studio
It’s nearing the end of the year, we know, and exams and the
winding down of the school year will be taking up much of your
time. But we encourage you to give some thought to what you
would like to have introduced to your neighbourhood that could
enhance your life and the life of our community.
If you have any suggestions, feel free to email them to Lynn
Muller at: lynn@dainfern.co.za

FROM THE GOLF PRO
ED HOLDING
Scramble a Good Score
Part 1
Although most golfers would gladly play every shot from a perfect
lie in the centre of the fairway, such is the nature of the game
that it is inevitable that, from time to time – or perhaps even more
frequently – you will find your ball in a rather difficult situation.
MAKE A STEEP SWING IN THE ROUGH
“A most important fundamental of shots from the rough is to contact
the ball before hitting the turf,” Gary Player recommends in Gary
Player’s Golf Secrets. “You should meet the ball with a sharply
descending club head. An upright backswing, with the wrists
breaking early, will help achieve this downward hit.”
EXTEND DOWN THE SLOPE TO AVOID FATS
AND THINS
If you are prone to catching the ball fat or thin, David Leadbetter
recommends that you hit some practice shots off a downhill lie with
a short iron and play the ball back in your stance. The downslope
will encourage you to extend your follow-through low to the ground
and also to transfer your weight correctly across to the left foot in the
downswing.

TAKE A PITCHING WEDGE TO PLAY A
WATER SHOT
MY
CY
“Two factors must come into play before I will attempt to hit a
ball from the water,” wrote Seve Ballesteros in Golf Tips from the
Stars. “Firstly, at least half the ball must be visible above the water;
secondly, I must be able to achieve a reasonably firm footing when
taking my stance. Then, to play the shot, I invariably choose a
pitching wedge because this club not only has loft to lift the ball out
of the water as swiftly as possible, but it also has a sharp, leading
edge which will obviously cut through the water better than a
sand wedge. I position the ball well back in my stance, my hands
significantly ahead, and then make a short, steep backswing
before pulling the club down hard into a spot right behind the ball.
Remember to put on those waterproofs, though!”
CMY
K
MOVE BALL BACK IN STANCE FOR ANY
BAD LIE
Tiger Woods believes that if you are in any doubt as to your ability
to hit a shot from a poor lie, you should play the ball further back in
your stance.
CHOKE DOWN THE GRIP FROM SLOPING
LIES
When playing from any kind of uneven lie, Julie Inkster tries to swing
with the contour of the ground and allow the ball to curve naturally.
She also chokes down on the club for control and abbreviates the
length of backswing to strike the ball more crisply.

Expats welcomed
to Dainfern
It was a well-oiled collaboration of service providers ably co-ordinated
by Samantha Weir of the Business Exchange and Laura Powell of the
Dainfern Homeowners Association that resulted in yet another successful
gathering of ladies at the beginning of October.
H
eld at the Business Exchange
in the Dainfern Clubhouse, this
get-together was arranged to
welcome new Expats to the
Dainfern community. Nicola Leitch acted
as MC for the occasion and each service
provider present was able to spend 3
minutes explaining what it is that they
do and how residents can utilise their
services.
Looking at the list of activities and
services available to Residents, it’s no
wonder that Expats choose Dainfern as
the preferred estate to stay in while they
are in SA.
Here’s a summary of what’s on offer in

LIFESTYLE Running Club
By Wendy-Ann Wood
Running with your
best friend
Your dog might be your ultimate
training partner – most dogs are
willing to fit in with your schedule,
have boundless energy and won’t
cancel on you at the last minute.
All dogs need exercise – just like
humans, it keeps them healthy, and
there is nothing like a wet nose in
your face to motivate you out of bed
for a pre-dawn start.
I
Six tips for tail-wagging training
t is in both your best interests to
ensure that your furry training buddy
is getting as much pleasure from the
partnership as you are. Just as you
take care of yourself by watching your
nutrition and having your shoes matched
to your running style, there are a few
considerations that will keep your pooch
happy and injury free.
#1 - MAKE SURE YOUR
DOG IS A RUNNER
Not all dogs are born to run. Just as
some humans are genetically built to
be better runners than others, the same
can be said of dogs. What your little pug
actually wants to tell you when you try
and drag him out for a trot, is that he can’t
breathe. Literally. Dogs with short noses
and flat faces generally have very narrow
nostrils and cannot take in enough
fresh air to keep up with the demands
of strenuous exercise. They are better
suited to long strolls. Dog breeds suited
to running are the short-haired, larger
breed and long-snouted sorts. Dogs that
were bred for running are the obvious
choice. It’s a good idea to research your
breed if you are intending to run with your
dog.
#2 - PUPPIES ARE NOT
JUST SMALL DOGS
You would not expect your 3-year-old
14
DAINFERN
child to run 10km with you, so don’t
expect that from your puppy either. You
shouldn’t run a puppy until it has reached
skeletal maturity which, depending on the
breed, could be anything from 7 months
to 2 years. As a general rule, the larger
the breed, the longer it takes. If you
know your breed well, you will have that
information but if you are unsure, you
should visit your vet just to be safe. In
the meantime, you can continue with its
obedience training and socialization, two
important traits in any running companion
(furry or not). Just as we encourage
‘free-play’ in our children, the same goes
for puppies. Allowing them to play and
run in grassy areas will start to prepare
Dainfern Running Club
their cardiovascular system without
putting undue strain on their developing
skeleton.
#3 - DOGS NEED TRAINING,
JUST LIKE US
You can’t expect your dog to immediately
be able to keep up with your training
programme. They may give the
impression that they have boundless
energy, but that does not necessarily
translate to an easy 10km on tar roads.
Your loyal friend may very
well keep up with you,
even if he is tired,

and, again, the programme
should be suited to the type of dog.
The general rule of thumb is: build up
distance slowly, monitoring the dog’s
recovery in between runs, and increase
either pace or distance, but never both at
the same time.
#4 - WATCH THE WEATHER
In South Africa, the obvious weather
hazard is overheating. Not only should
you be concerned about the ambient
temperature, but if you are running on tar
roads you owe it to your dog to ensure
that he doesn’t burn his pads. If you
cannot hold your finger to the tar for more
than 20 seconds without discomfort, then
it is too hot for your dog. Making sure he
has enough drinking water en route is a
must.
#5 - HEALTHY INSIDE,
HAPPY OUTSIDE
Just as we watch our nutrition to support
our running, we owe the same to our
dogs. Dogs have different energy
dynamics to humans because they are
furrier, have different muscle structure
and bowel habits. If your dog is running
for more than 30 minutes continuously
per day then you should consider looking
more closely at his diet. A dog’s primary
fuel during exercise is from fats, so
discuss a higher fat diet with your vet.
Energy bars and gels are certainly not
Shaka, the Rhodesian
Ridgeback, is the one and only
Honorary Canine member of
Dainfern Running Club. Shaka
and his training partner Barbara
Mulcahy have been members
of the club since 2006. They
regularly ran the time trial in the
club’s infancy, before the route
was even along the golf course!
Barbara credits Shaka with much of the motivation
and support she needed while training for her first two
Comrades Marathons. The pair could often be spotted
setting off on a training run along Broadacres Drive in
the wee hours of the morning and Shaka became well
known to the regular morning pedestrians.
In his peak, Shaka would run between 60-70km per
week with Barbara. His longest run ever was 30km.
This is no mean feat, but being a Ridgeback, he was
perfectly suited for the job.
Despite his greying jowls, at 11-and-a-half he is still an
impressive sight. Faithfully, he still goes out for a short
trot a few times a week. Barbara’s advice is to let the
dog set the pace. That way you won’t over-train your
dog and he will get the benefit of the time he spends
keeping you company.

the optimum fuel for your dog on the
run. You may also want to consider a
supplement for joint health, something
containing glucosamine and chondroitin.
A vet check-up is a good way to ensure
your dog’s joints are in the necessary
shape to run – screening for hip dysplasia
or luxating patellas is the responsible
thing to do.
#6 – MANNERS MAKETH
MAN (AND DOG)
Dog faeces in the tread of one’s running
shoes is sure to spoil any runner’s day,
so be considerate of other runners using
the roads and don’t allow your dog to soil
there - or make sure you clean up after
him. Ideally, for the comfort of your dog,
yourself and any other runners that you
may come across, your dog should run
close to you, on a slack leash and be
obedient at all times. This is not the time
for him to be charging off after rabbits or
birds as it could be dangerous to both of
you. Some dogs are better suited to short
chases and retrieval, and these dogs are
better exercised in ‘off-leash’ parks and
dog runs.
We are fortunate to live in a place where
we can safely run with our dogs. Running
can be a great way to bond with your
faithful hound and keep both of you
healthy at the same time. Just remember,
his safety and well-being is in your
hands.
Happy
running to
you and your
best friend.

that participated included Angola,
Botswana, DRC, Egypt, Namibia, Nigeria,
Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe,

The JKA All Africa Karate

divisions in both kata and kumite
from nine years upwards. The senior
divisions attracted good participation
from the other African countries and the
team events provided an exciting finale
to this historic first JKA All Africa Karate
Championships. For the Dainfern JKA
karate students chosen to represent
South Africa, this was their first
exposure to international competition.
The students selected all started karate
as complete white belts in 2010, which
makes this a huge achievement to
make it to the JKA All Africa Karate
Championships at such a young age.
“This is the great thing about karate,”
comments Bernard Buys, Sensei of the
SA JKA Karate Dainfern Dojo. “It gives
students an opportunity to represent their
country from a young age – they don’t
have to wait to finish school before they
can compete internationally.”
Kema Rugara of Dainfern JKA karate
managed to win two bronze medals for
her country. A magnificent achievement
indeed. Well done to Kema and all our

This year, the Grade 6s explored the
theme of ‘I am, therefore I can’ and ended
the programme with a Market Day where
they selected a particular cause or charity
close to their hearts. The children sold food
and created games relating to their cause,
charity or service and raised an amazing

Grade 7s were exposed to the world of

were discovered in their version of the
‘Dragon’s Den’ activity.
The High School also has an academic
enrichment programme in place for the
Grade 8s and 9s. This is a fun, rewarding
and academically sound programme
where students discover the wealth
of knowledge that can be gained from
alternative and sometimes unconventional
learning opportunities. Numerous speakers
visit throughout the year and all the High
School students embark on a timetablefree day for which academic outings and

opportunity for subject-specific outings
to galleries, museums and botanical

The service is attentive, yet discreet. You are offered
a choice of the popular teas and coffees while their
sweet and savoury delicacies are brought over with a

The three-tiered service trays are stacked full of
crustless sandwiches, quiches, scones and – my,

irresistible choice of baby lemon meringue cubes,
milk tartlets topped with strawberries, carrot cakes,

Of course, in the hot summer afternoons, you may

What influences cause
property values to increase
Why investing in
property is the best
way to go.
W
hen you buy your first home
the usual motivation is to
acquire your own property,
rather than paying someone
else’s bond and, of course, you then have
your independence. Most youngsters seek
freedom from living at home and having to
abide by family household rules. “The very
idea of buying their own home is exciting
and they often do not realise what a
wonderful investment they are making. This
is the start of their financial independence,”
Craig Hutchison, CEO of Engel & Völkers
Southern Africa comments.
According to the FNB House Price Index,
the average house price for April 2015
rose 5% year-on-year. Despite the nominal
house price inflation slowdown, however,
Particularly the millennials (age group
under 30) find that this is normally the time
that their financial awareness starts and
an investment into property is what they
should consider. A wise investment at this
age could set them up for life.
(as an income-generating property) will
bring in the necessary monthly rental
which, if managed wisely, can generate
enough profit to buy yet an additional
property to rent out. This process can
continue until the investor has a portfolio
of rental properties paying for themselves.
• They could choose to stay in a rental
property costing less per month than their
own home (which they then rent out). If
the rent they receive on their property is
more than their monthly bond payments
and the rent they pay is considerably less,
the savings could accumulate over time.
• There is constant growth in the
requirement for accommodation, so
a sound property investment will be a
guaranteed asset forever and possibly the
start of their property portfolio.
There are different options for buyers
to consider when looking at a property
purchase, either as a primary residence,
or in a buy-to-let scenario. Both scenarios
create different opportunities:
• A rental property producing a good yield
This financial leveraging emphasises how
important it is to keep your credit history
untarnished, because when you apply for
a home loan, your history regarding your
personal instalment payments, leasing
finance, mortgage loans, credit card house prices continued to grow positively in
real terms in recent months, when adjusted
for CPI inflation. The slower house price
growth has created opportunities for
lower income buyers as the prices stay
achievable. Property still stays an excellent
investment channel. Therefore, now is a
good time to buy, especially after the recent
decision by the SA Reserve Bank to raise
the transfer duty thresholds on property
transactions – costs on transactions below
R2,25 million have actually been reduced.

It is also important to maintain your home
although it feels like a never ending and ongoing evil. Money spent on maintenance
should be budgeted for and properly
planned. “However, remember that when
you eventually sell your home, a renovated
and modernised home will always attract
the current market value from buyers,”
Craig says.
debt, overdrafts and general loans are all
considered. Consumers’ credit risk profiles
impact their access to credit.
Which factors influence
property values?
According to ABSA’s Housing Review for
the second quarter 2015: “The residential
property market will always be driven by
economic trends, household finances and
consumer confidence, which will affect the
affordability of housing and the accessibility
of and demand for mortgage finance.”
This means that property prices will
invariably change with inflation over the
years, particularly if the property is in
an area or suburb that is sought-after.
Craig further advises that it is essential
to research your area of choice properly
before you invest in a home, and buy the
property based on an overall assessment,
not just because the property appeals
to you. He says that aspects to consider
include the historic investment growth
in an area, proximity to commercial
offices, proposed new developments,
schools, and also the general state of
the neighbourhood. It is also a known
fact that the more popular suburbs
appreciate at a higher rate than the
rest, so your investigation will highlight
this fact. The annual appreciation of
your property is therefore affected by
the inflation rate, general demand and
also the infrastructure of the suburb.
Together, these factors can ensure
property appreciation of more than 15%
per annum, which is much higher than any
fixed deposit investment.
26
DAINFERN
Current macro-economic factors affect
property prices, both up and down.
Increased interest rates, fuel prices, water
and electricity always tighten household
budgets and owners may have to sell due
to affordability. The irony here is that this
creates opportunities for cash flush buyers
to invest, while the affected sellers have to
sell their properties to downscale to more
affordable homes or rent until the situation
improves.

In conversation
with Victor Lidchi
Victor Lidchi (far left) with executives and staff of head office.
People who work with
Persian and Oriental
carpets develop a total
passion for the art form,
one that’s difficult to give
up. One such person
who I bumped into
recently is Victor Lidchi,
who grew up watching
his father, and later his
older brother, running
the original Lidchi
Gallery that was started
in 1936.
V
ictor Lidchi learned about the
bigger picture surrounding the
Persian and Oriental carpet
business by visiting the bazaars
and the villages in the countries where
they’re hand-crafted (including Persia,
Turkey and Afghanistan) and developing
relationships with leading dealers and the
top auction houses such as Sotheby’s
and Christies in London and New York. In
1985, Victor started his own carpet and rug
gallery and has built a reputation for being
one of the doyens of the local Persian and
Oriental carpets market.
In a Q&A interview, he shared some
insights with me.
Q: The Lidchi name has become well
known over the past seven or so
decades. Tell me more about its history.
V: My father was a well-known art dealer in
Paris in the 1920s and ‘30s. He got to know
some very influential people - one of his
friends was Sir Ernest Oppenheimer of De
Beers. Sir Ernest encouraged my father to
29

come to South Africa, which he did in 1936
for the Johannesburg Empire Exhibition.
As a result, he opened his first gallery in
Rissik Street in downtown Johannesburg
and later expanded to Bree Street. His
customers were from some of the leading
families in South Africa.
The ground floor of his store was occupied
mainly by antiques and paintings and the
basement was where the Persian and
Oriental carpets were on display. Being
one of the first in this field, my dad was
considered the Father of the Persian
Carpet business in SA.
As my father decided to retire, my
older brother, Maurice, took over the
running of the business and expanded
it internationally, while I was groomed to
eventually take over. However, due to
family politics, I decided in 1985 to start my
own Persian and Oriental carpet and rug
business, which I have expanded over the
past 30 years.
HOME FRONT
One corner of the Dunkeld showrooms.
The timeless elegance of Persian and Oriental carpets.
I started from my home in Gardens,
Johannesburg and, from there, expanded
and moved to Rosebank, then to
Craighall, on to larger premises in
Sandton Square (now known as Mandela
Square) and then finally to Dunkeld
Centre, with a branch in Clearwater
Mall. The latter was re-located in 2013 to
Honeydew Village, Weltevreden Park.
3. They tend to improve with use, much like
fine wine;
4. They have the potential of holding or
even increasing their value.
Q: How does one determine the
quality of these hand-made Persian &
Oriental rugs?
V: As with any art form or handcraft,
remember that there are levels of
excellence – whether they are paintings,
rugs or even wines. The standards vary
from mediocre, to good, to excellent.
Firstly, some definitions. Persian carpets
are those made in Persia (now Iran).
Oriental carpets are those that originate
from anywhere in the East, including
Persia, India, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan,
Nepal and China. They are all made using
the same basic handcraft techniques,
but each region has its own wonderful
personality. By the way, “rug” refers to
those below approximately 2,4m x 1, 6m;
and “carpets” to those larger – the terms
are often used interchangeably.
Q: What is your price range?
V: Very wide. Depending on size and
grade, from under R2 000. But mainly our
items range from R5 000 to R35 000. Of
course, our finer and rarer items go from
R50 000 to R100 000 or more. Each one is
carefully selected with the traditional policy:
it must be an item we can recommend to
a friend!
So, we have our grading system to guide
the public because, as explained, they
range in quality from simply “mediocre” to
“acceptable”, to superior and to the rare
masterpieces. We specialise in superior
and top quality carpets.
Q. Why is that?
V: There are good reasons for this:
1. They are more beautiful and will
therefore give more pleasure, add more
style and luxury;
2. They are more durable and can give
generations of use with proper care ;
My advice to customers is, if you’re looking
for quality, don’t compromise: rather buy
a smaller superior item than a larger
mediocre one.
Q: What has been the secret of Lidchi’s
79 years of leadership in this field?
V: Buying a beautiful Persian/Oriental
carpet should be a memorable,
enjoyable, hassle-free experience,
like embarking on a journey. Our
policy is - “Give clients more service
and value than they expect!” We offer
clients various services: one is free
no-obligation expert advice to establish
their exact personal taste, needs and
budget, then they can make informed
choices from our collections. Also, we
give them the opportunity to view their
selection in their own home or office:
we actually deliver, lay them in their
room of choice to live with for a day and
collect - all with no obligation, (although,
understandably, there are Terms and
Conditions that apply.)
Our after sales service is equally essential.
We expertly clean and repair their carpets
whenever needed so that they will retain
their beauty and hold their value.
30
DAINFERN
For our customers’ peace of mind and
because of our confidence in our quality,
we offer a full credit-exchange guarantee
– within three months of their purchase
they can return what they bought, to
exchange for carpets and rugs of equal
value, no questions asked, (again, Terms
and Conditions apply). Very few ever
take advantage of this, but it gives them
reassurance that they won’t be stuck with
something that they feel is not quite right.
Another is, if they don’t see what they
want in one of our branches or at our
warehouse, we’ll find carpets at source and
fly them over to SA, if necessary.
Everything that we sell carries a written
certificate of authenticity and value,
accepted by all insurance companies.
Our whole approach is not ‘hard sell’. We
want to help people find what they will fall
in love with, that will bring magic to their
lives and interiors. When we ask them later
how they’re enjoying their carpets, the most
frequent comments are: “We love them!”
“We can’t live without them.”
Q: Victor, what does the future hold for
Victor Lidchi Carpets & Rugs?
V: Well, I have semi-retired and handed the
running of the business over to my superb
younger partners. Plans for the next 50
years? Branches in all the major cities of
South Africa and eventually selected parts
of Africa. Hey, possibly even New York and
Paris. The ball’s in their court, now.

drove along the Florida Turnpike to the
Fort Lauderdale area where we spent
the third week of our holiday touring
southern Florida.
The Florida everglades are aptly named
after the 50-mile wide river of grass in
south Florida, less than three feet deep
and barely eight feet above sea level.
We took an airboat ride across this
river of grass that stretched as far as
the eye could see. The huge airscrew
on the back of the airboat propelled us
powerfully forward over the tall grass
stalks which bent under the boat as we
glided over them and then regained their
upright stance within seconds of our
passing.
The airboat glided effortlessly and,
although the noise from the converted
auto engine was deafening, necessitating
the use of ear plugs, it did not seem to
unduly disturb the bird life and the Wood

Once back in our vehicle, we headed
along Highway 41, also called the

on the water, a solitary American White

Among the mangroves, we saw Yellowcrowned Night Heron and Roseate
Spoonbills and Ospreys were often

Two excellent bird sightings were the
Western Kingbird on Bahia Honda

The pilot of the launch opened up the
throttles on the way back and dolphins
surfed in the wake of the outboard
motor. Unfortunately, we did not see
the manatees but on the drive back we
had an excellent sighting of a RedShouldered Hawk perched in the open,
which helped make for a really great day.
A drive along the Florida Keys is
an unforgettable experience as the
only access road (Highway 1) is an
engineering marvel linking the mainland
to numerous islands for a distance of
some 200km out to Key West in the
Gulf of Mexico. One bridge in particular
that links Marathon Key to Big Pine
Key is called 7 Mile Bridge and crosses
open water for this distance. We wished
we had more time to explore the Keys.
Mansion at Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale, home to many of
the rich and famous, is known as
the “Venice of America” due to its
spectacular waterways. One of the best
ways to travel around Fort Lauderdale
is via the water taxi which costs $13 for
a day ticket and enables one to get on
and off at 11 stops along the route. The
taxi crew explained just who owned the
mega yachts and the most expensive
mansions. Ocean going luxury liners
over seven storeys high sail daily from
Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean
islands and the roads that cross the
waterways have centre sections that
are raised to allow the liners access.
Vultures that constantly flew overhead.
Hollywood Beach just a few miles
south of Fort Lauderdale has a fine
promenade, the type that one sees
in the movies - people with perfect
physiques on roller blades etc. As
our timeshare resort was right on the
promenade, we would often jog six
kms along with many other joggers
and cyclists (one felt so safe!). Apart
from the usual Pelicans and New
World Vultures that were abundant in
the area, we had numerous excellent
sightings along the promenade of
Monk Parakeets, which we heard
mostly before we saw them. One
final noteworthy sighting was of three
Magnificent Frigatebirds unmistakable
with their distinctive wing profile and
long slender tails, flying 100 feet
directly over us and out to sea.
One cannot avoid being impressed by
the opulence and by the entrepreneurial
spirit that created such splendour.
Nevertheless, being typical nature
lovers from Africa, we were also
impressed by the two-metre long
iguanas, (a shade of orange in colour),
that basked along the waterway and by

or the last twenty-three years,
Michael Maack has been running
his high end jewellery store, MD
Michaels Designs in Fourways
Mall. He has created and sold individually
handcrafted jewellery with huge success.
Even though the market for high end
jewellery is still there, Michael recognised
the need for change in the industry, due to
the current economic climate and change
in consumer buying patterns. In October
2013, Michael opened his silver jewellery
store, Azaura Jewellery.
Sterling silver is the brightest of all
the precious metals and many people
choose to wear sterling silver jewellery
because they love its bright, shiny look.
Its resurgence in the jewellery industry
has made way for more choices among
sterling silver jewellery designs and
has sparked the creation of collectable
jewellery which nurtures each person’s
individual taste and life experiences. Many of these
successful silver jewellery ranges, such as the Nominations
Italy, Thomas Sabo, Trollbeads and Engelsrufer brands, are
now available at Azaura Jewellery which makes Azaura the
ideal place to go shopping for those truly personalised gifts.
With the first store up and running successfully in Fourways
Mall, Azaura is now ready to branch out into the Dainfern
Square shopping centre. The new store is due to open soon
and there’s much anticipation that it will be a huge success.
What’s Trendy @ Azaura?

their heartfelt emotions for all eternity – regardless of whether a
rebel or a glam girl.
ENGELSRUFER
TROLLBEADS started life as ‘Troldekugler’ in 1976 in a small
jeweller’s store in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is the original
beads-on-bracelet brand.
Trollbeads is an exquisite set of interchangeable jewellery pieces.
At the heart of the collection are the beads themselves. Each piece
in the TROLLBEADS collection has its own little history, taking
its inspiration from mythology, astrology, fairy tales, fauna, flora,
cultural diversity, and last but certainly not least, in the familiar
things of everyday living. Trollbeads products include beads on
bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings and accessories.
THOMAS SABO
Elegant, slender twines, delicate leaves, spars the Love, friendship,
life mottoes – with its ‘Make Memories Last’ slogan, the new
THOMAS SABO LOVE BRIDGE range captures special moments
for all eternity. A filigree bar made of 925 sterling silver joins the two
ends of the bracelet and is the creative stage for deep emotions
and feelings and provides space for a personal free-of-charge
engraving. The custom of attaching a personalised love lock to
the most famous bridges in the world is the inspiration for the new
LOVE BRIDGE range of bracelets.
If you believe in guardian angels and want to connect in a closer
way, the ancient tradition of the “Engelsrufer” will help you call your
angel. This precious jewel is fragile like an angel but possesses
strength to help in all situations. Handcrafted with care and highquality, the beautiful pendant baskets are made from 925 sterling
silver which is rhodium plated.
Open the basket and discover a handcrafted interchangeable
chiming sound ball. The sound balls are available in 16 different
colours, with each colour having a special meaning. White signifies
brilliant perfection, innocence and purity; black dominates light and
is mysterious and elegant; green stands for hope, health, balance
and honesty; and red portrays strength, fire, passion and love.
Each ball has its own unique, subtle sound and the delicate chime
of the Engelsrufer calls your guardian angel to your side to protect
you from all danger. Choose your colours wisely, so that you can
find your special angel to listen to all your secret wishes. The sound
balls can be purchased separately and exchanged individually. The
Engelsrufer is available in three sizes and three colours – silver,
gold or rose gold plated. Add on angel wing pendants to further
personalise your purchase.
Every form of love finds its unique proof in the THOMAS SABO
LOVE BRIDGE range – the customisable bracelets manifest the
bond between two soul mates, be they lovers, friends or family
members. Adorned with declarations of love, tokens of friendship
or life mottos, these delicate bracelets become very personal items
of jewellery, whose significance can be determined by the wearer
themselves by means of an engraving. The wide range of styles
and colours is not only perfect for combining with existing THOMAS

from Mr. Nelson Mandela to
help a little girl living with a
facial anomaly, to date more than 1500

Madiba asked the Lubner Family to help
him secure surgery for a young child
suffering from a rare medical condition
causing facial nerve paralysis (known as
Moebius Syndrome).
The Lubner Family, inspired by the little
girl’s story, saw the bigger picture. There
was no sustainability in sending one child
overseas, so why not bring the skills
to SA. With that, Dr. Ron Zucker and
Dr. Craig Van Der Kolk were invited to
South Africa to transfer the skills of the
technique to South African doctors.
A surgeon, Dr. George Psaras, then
Head of the Department of Plastic and

in the country to learn this exceptionally

In 2007, the Smile Fund’s growth

establishment as a Section 21 entity, and
the fund was re-launched as the Smile

Do weight bearing exercise. Muscles
require a lot of energy to build, repair and
maintain. In addition to the initial metabolic
spike during training, your body must use
additional energy to repair microtears
tothemusclefibresfor48hourspost
workout and use additional energy for
long-term maintenance. Building muscle
now burns energy now and later. On the
contrary, things that reduce muscle mass,
e.g. starvation diets, will reduce your
metabolism.
Eat breakfast and don’t skip meals.
Regular clean eating, especially breaking
the fast in the morning, gives your body
something to metabolize. If no fuel is
forthcoming, your metabolism slows down.
That juicing detox diet may seem to be
moving the scale in the right direction
(water loss), but it is actually slowing your
basal metabolic rate (BMR), setting you
up for weight gain (fat) in the near future.
To combat toxins and shed water, rather
consume 2 more glasses of water per day.
Increased water consumption has been
shown to improve metabolism.
Choose macronutrients wisely. Fats,
carbohydrates and proteins have been the
44
DAiNfErN
topic of much debate between dieticians
anddietersalike,withspecificemphasis
on the most desirable ratio. all else aside,
the macronutrients affect BMR differently,
requiring varying amounts of energy to eat,
digest and metabolize. Fats raise BMR
by 0-5%; carbohydrates by 5-10%; and
proteins by 20-30% (1).
Add spice to your diet. Warm spicy
seasonings such as capsicum, chilli,
cayenne pepper, horseradish and
cinnamon (also a blood sugar regulator)
mayhaveasignificantthermiceffectand
increase your metabolism by raising your
core temperature. Caffeine, dark chocolate
and nicotine also will raise BMR but with
side effects.
Keep your hormones in check. When
stress increases, excess cortisol is
secreted, interfering with normal metabolic
function and resulting in “toxic fat” around
the abdomen. Other hormones of note are
ghrelin and leptin, which signal hunger and
satiation, respectively. Less than 7,5 hours
of sleep per night increases ghrelin and
decreases leptin, causing you to overeat
when you are not hungry.

after the dark and cosy colours of winter,
it’s refreshing to wear lighter and brighter
colours as the days heat up. If you

always bring in bolder colours later, if you

your challenges when the weather
is warm and bright. Stand in front of
a full length mirror with your eyes
closed after you get dressed in the
morning. When you open your eyes,
note where your gaze immediately
falls. If it’s not your face and your eyes,
which is where everyone else’s gaze
should immediately fall, make some
adjustments. Throw out those clothes
that are too snug, too baggy, too worn
or stretched. Replace them with cheap
summery trends and spend your money
on quality neutral coloured shoes,
handbags, trousers and jackets. This
way, you will always be appropriately,
and stylishly dressed for work.
Florals are always in fashion at this time
of year. Dresses and blouses in floral
patterns ranging from subtle to bright and

your office wardrobe. Just wear them with
simple, rather than bold, accessories.
A crisp, clean and cool ‘preppy’ look is
always casually smart for work or the
weekend. Neat fitting trousers or Capri
pants with a crisp shirt and a classic
blazer will always look understated, neat
and professional. Just throw on a pair of
brogues or loafers and a neutral coloured
handbag and you’re good to go to a
meeting or a braai.
Alternatively, light weight fabrics in soft
nude tones and tailored styles also work
perfectly for summer time work wear
in a causal office. Wear silver or gold
accessories and nude heels to keep it
polished and professional.
The options for appropriate summertime

– The legacy of Suicide
Twenty-three lives are lost to suicide in south
africa every day! and, for every successful
suicide, 20 plus people have attempted suicide.
a
t least 20% of the population
will suffer from a depressive
order (illness affecting the body,
mind and thoughts) at some
point and only one third will get the help
they need. Left untreated, depression
can lead to suicide.
suicide leaves a legacy of pain,
devastation, guilt and even mystery...why
did they do it?
suicide is tragic and devastating, leaving
traumatized victims in its wake. Those
left behind are left with a psychological
mess and years of personal recovery
ahead of them, notwithstanding having to
deal with the loss of someone they loved
but also with the guilt and blame they
will inevitably feel. They will go through
a range of emotions from sadness,
frustration, anger and hurt, to remorse
and regret, being a stark reminder of the
fragility of life. Many of the questions from
family and friends will go unanswered
forever, (only one in 4 people leave a
suicide note), complicating the healing
process for those left behind.
according to Cassey Chambers,
Operations Director for saDag, “the
most common reason is untreated
major depression, associated with
an imbalance of the brain chemicals
thatinfluencemood.Itismorelikely
to occur if you have a family history of
depression or other mental problems, or
if you are experiencing environmental
stress. This ranges from abusive or

More often than not, those contemplating
suicide suffer in silence, afraid of being
judged, not knowing how to open up or

feeling that they have no one to talk to
who will understand them. It is also hard
for people suffering from depression
to even consider that there may be
alternatives to stop their pain, suffering or
anxiety. Often they just can’t see beyond
the emotions they are experiencing in the
moment.
everyone is potentially at risk. Men are
four times more likely to commit suicide,
and, by way of example, in the last
decade, suicides of men aged 45-59,
have risen by 40%, being a quarter
of all suicides in the UK. similar stats
are being reported worldwide. several
factorscontribute–financialpressure,
unemployment, undiagnosed mental
conditions and the reluctance to tell
someone or to seek medical advice.
In contrast, decades of research show
that depression rates amongst women
are higher than in men, most likely
resulting from the ever increasing
pressure to balance work with raising
children and being the breadwinner due
to escalating divorce rates. This juggling
of roles puts women at risk of depression.

101 Kruger Tales
100 New Herbs
Glowfly Dance
This is a collection of 101 jaw-dropping
stories, as told by the very people who
experienced them – first-hand accounts
of sightings, scrapes and encounters in
one of Africa’s greatest National Parks. It
details hair-raising experiences from the
Kruger Park’s roads, camps, picnic sites
and walking trails, such as:
• An enraged elephant flips a car onto its
roof;
• A lioness prises open a terrified couple’s
car door;
• A fleeing impala leaps through an open
car window;
• A hyena snatches a baby from a tent;
• A tourist takes a bath in a croc-infested
dam...
Margaret Roberts is a well-known
proponent of the use of natural products
to enhance health and wellbeing. In 100
New Herbs she introduces readers to an
exciting range of new plants that can be
used in the kitchen and medicinally.
‘I never see my father. My father never
sees me. But I see with the eyes he gave
me. Slanted like the wings of gulls flying
in the sky. And, when my mother speaks
of Mexico, her eyes mist up with the
lights of memory.’
Margaret offers practical advice on how
and when to plant, grow and harvest
the featured herbs, and includes recipes
that harness the medicinal, cosmetic
and edible nature of these plants. The
accessible, down-to-earth text is laced
with personal anecdotes and historical
information about the use of herbs.
Colourful photographs aid identification
in this beautifully-designed book, which
is an indispensable guide for anyone
interested in health, wellness, organic
gardening and the use of herbs to
enhance cooking.
Through young Mai’s eyes, life is
enchanting and full of beauty. She
dances on her grandfather’s feet while
he talks of freedom. But the world is
hard and her mother is struggling. When
Rashid arrives, he casts a deep shadow
over their lives. Nothing is beyond her
new stepfather. They are desperate
to escape from him, and their world
becomes a constant battle for survival
– one of fleeing, multiple identities,
abduction and upheaval. Mai’s eyes not
only witness the story of her mother, but
also the poignant stories of the many
women she encounters across different
countries. Finally, Mai learns that, when
freedom comes, it comes at a bitter price.
By Jeff Gordon
A bedside book, a travel companion,
a dip-into, read anywhere compilation
of joyful encounters laced with terrible
warnings - wherever you are, this book
will transport you directly into the bush.
Jeff Gordon is one of the myriad ordinary
Kruger visitors, with no special affiliation
to the Park. But he happens to enjoy a
good yarn, so he invited other ordinary
Kruger visitors to submit stories about
their experiences. The result has proved
popular beyond his imaginings, and he
has already started collecting stories for
a second compilation.
He likes his boerewors a touch
underdone, his biltong thinly sliced and
his Amarula on ice.
By Margaret Roberts
Margaret Roberts is a household name,
having made her mark in the world of
health and gardening. She pursues
her passion for all things natural that
can uplift, heal and inspire, by creating
gardens, teaching about the wonders
of herbs and developing medicinal and
nutritional plants at her Herbal Centre.
She has published many books and
articles on flowers, herbs, health and
gardening.
