The Society for Institutional and Organizational Economics (formerly known as the International
Society for the New Institutional Economics) promotes rigorous theoretical and empirical
investigation of the nature, behavior, and governance of organizations and institutions using
approaches drawn from economics, organization theory, law, political science, and other social
sciences. The Society makes a special effort to encourage participation from scholars from
around the world.

roleofthestateinthegrowthprocess.Muchofthisworkis
summarizedintheirjointbookEndogenousGrowthTheory(MIT
Press,1998)andTheEconomicsofGrowth(MITPress,2009),inhis
bookwithRachelGriffithonCompetitionandGrowth(MITPress,
2006),andinhissurvey“WhatDoWeLearnfromSchumpeterian
GrowthTheory”(jointwithU.AkcigitandP.Howitt.In2001,PhilippeAghionreceivedthe
YrjoJahnssonAwardofthebestEuropeaneconomistunderage45,andin2009he
receivedtheJohnVonNeumannAward.
Alberto Alesina is the Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political
Economy at Harvard University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard
in 1986. He served as Chairman of the Department of Economics from
2003 - 2006. He is a member of the National Bureau of Economic
Research and the Center for Economic Policy Research. He is a
member of the Econometric Society and of the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences. He is the director of the political economy
program of the NBER since 2006.

economics.Hehaspublishedfivebooks.Amongstthoseare:The
FutureofEurope:ReformorDecline,publishedbyMITPress,withFrancescoGiavazziand

politicaleconomicdeterminantsofredistributivepolicies,differencesinthewelfarestate
intheUSandEuropeand,moregenerally,differencesintheeconomicsystemintheUSand
Europe,theeffectofalternativeelectoralsystemsoneconomicpolicies,andthe
