President’s Message
Dear Fellow Members
Happy New Year
There’s a renewed enthusiasm in the air and a freshness that comes with welcoming
the new calendar year. I am joined by the General Committee, in wishing you
and your family a very happy and prosperous 2016. As a Committee, we’ve now
served you about eight months and we promise you continued progress in the
months ahead.
As your President, it was a privilege to host the annual Tree Lighting. It is truly a
fantastic tradition and wonderful to see our Community come together for this
special occasion. The sheer enjoyment on the faces of Members, some young and
some not so very young, was heartening. A special thank you to our very own Tanglin
Choir; they sung brilliantly. For a glimpse of the merry-making, we’ve included a
two-page spread of the highlights on pages 31-32.
Introducing Tang Yun
We were delighted to have received about 150 submissions from Members in response
to our naming contest. We formulated our new name by blending two submissions to
arrive at Tang Yun. On behalf of the Committee, I would like to invite you all to join us
Saturday, 30 January, for Tang Yun’s Grand Opening. The Lion Dance will commence
at 11.28am sharp, and will be followed by delicious samples from our new Chinese
restaurant culinary team.
Business Centre/Tangles
With the relocation of the Administration Office from the Main Clubhouse to the 4th
level of the Sports & Recreation Complex, the refurbishment of our Function Rooms
(Raffles, Claymore and Draycott), and the completion of our Chinese Restaurant,
our design focus shifts toward the final two components of the SGM-approved
$2.5 Million project – the Business Centre, and Tangles Cafe. The House and
Development and Planning Sub-Committees, joined by management, are busy
assessing floor plan options. We will be updating you in due course.
Library
I would also like to thank those of you who shared your views about the new Library
design. We have taken on board some of the feedback and incorporated changes
like: more soft seating, warmer wood tones and the removal of the contemporary
feature carpet. Whilst effecting these changes has caused a slight delay, it is
important, process-wise, that we do so. As a General Committee, we are listening
carefully to Member feedback and have acted accordingly to ensure optimum
Member satisfaction. The Tender Documents were revised, and a Tender call was
published in the Newspaper. We’ll continue to keep you posted on our progress.
Guest Rooms Update
In the December edition of our Club magazine,
I shared with you that the Urban Redevelopment
Authority (URA) granted us approval to construct
more rooms in the former spa located on the 5th floor
of the Sports Complex. Since then, we prepared the
Tender specifications and progressed through our
Tender process. We will be evaluating the submissions
this month, and in the near future, we will be sharing
the submission highlights with you, along with the
business case, to assist you with your evaluation of our
upcoming proposal.
Maintaining the ‘Club Standard’
On a final note, in response to Member sentiment that
the Club is too accessible to non-Members, we recently
asked Management to enforce proximity card access
to the Sports Complex, restrict Singapore resident
Reciprocal Club Members from accessing the Club,
and generally to ensure that Members sign in “their”
Guests. We kindly seek your cooperation and support
to ensure the comfort, safety, security and exclusivity of
our Club. I would also like to share that March 2016 will
see us restrict all guest parking to the Sports Complex,
on a three-month trial. This will help us better control
non-Member access. The Committee encourages
you to please read future updates on these important
matters and to ensure that your guests understand
Clubhouse Rules. Collectively, we seek your support to
ensure we uphold our Club’s high standards.
Once again, Happy New Year. The General Committee

Editor’s Message
"Truly the year 2015 has been a fulfilling
one for the Club in the area of giving
back to the community."
Fellow Members,
What a busy year 2015 has been for the Club! On top of the 150th anniversary
celebration events that were happening throughout the year, the following
charity events were organised in the Club as well:
• In the month of May, the Golf Section organised a golf charity event, and
raised $39,496 for the Special Olympics Singapore.
• Also in the month of May, the Dance Section held a dance event, and
raised $10,000 for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS).
• In the month of October, the Club invited 130 underprivileged children to a
Pool-side carnival. About 50 Club Members volunteered their time to
chaperon the children on the event day itself. Smiles from the children
abounded as they splashed and played in the pools, and were treated
to clown stilt walkers, a magic show, cotton candy, and fun-food.
• Also, in the month of October, the Club raised $391,950, of which $195,975
went to the President’s Challenge, and the remaining half went to the
following club-elected charities: Kidney Dialysis Foundation, Food from the
Heart and Focus on the Family.
Truly the year 2015 has been a fulfilling one for the Club in the area of giving
back to the community. Well done Tanglin Club!
Moving on. A Members Communications survey was recently conducted.
My thanks to the 359 Members who participated in the survey. Your
participation has provided valuable data to help guide the Marketing &
Communications (a.k.a. Marcom) team in its decision moving forward in
shaping the Club’s communication tools (magazine, website, Digital displays,
etc). Congratulations to Ms Karen Goh, Dr Derrick Yeo, and Mr Tan Soo Ren,
who have won the 3 prizes from the survey contest ($288 TC dining vouchers,
a bottle of Hendricks Gin worth $99, and a Bottega Prosecco Gold NV worth
$60, respectively).
I thought I would share some interesting results from the MemComms survey:

Of the 359 Members who participated in the survey, 70% of the survey
participants agree or strongly agree that the quality of content in the
magazine is good.
Similarly, 71% of the survey participants like the current look and style of the
magazine.
While the above two numbers do indicate that the magazine’s current
content structure, look and style are generally well received by the
membership, several negative feedback points were given by some
members as well. The team will be looking into these points in detail to see
how they can be addressed.

The top 6 most popular magazine sections voted by the
participants are (in descending order of popularity):
Food & Beverage; Events; General Manager’s Message;
President’s Message; Wine & Dine; and finally Cinema.
78% of the survey participants prefer the Club magazine to
be labelled "The Tanglin Club", while 18% prefer the name
"The Tanglin Times". As such, the name of the magazine will
remain as it is currently.
On the question “What do you think we should include
to make the magazine better?”, interestingly, 9% of the
participants felt that no further changes to the magazine
is required. 44% of the participants provided many varied
suggestions on what could be done to make the magazine
better, while the remaining 47% had no comments.
Moving forward, the Marcom team will be analysing these
suggestions to see how the magazine can be improved
based on them.
On the question on whether Members prefer to still have a
physical copy of the magazine or the digital version, 41%
still prefer the printed copy, 31% prefer the digital copy,
and the remaining 28% are indifferent. As such, we will still
continue to print the physical magazine for the general
membership. Concurrently, for Members who would like to
opt-out of receiving a physical copy, and instead receive
a digital copy, the Club currently offers a notification
service called NewsBites, which sends a notification
email to Members, whenever a new issue of Club
magazine digital copy is ready. Within that notification
email will be a direct hyperlink to the digital copy. To
opt-out of the physical magazine copy and subscribe to
NewsBites, please drop an email to the Marcom team at
newsbites@tanglin-club.org.sg.
On the question “What other communication channels
would you like to see in this Club?”, the top-2 significant
feedback points were:
• No change needed (50%)
• Facebook (42%)
The popularity of the “Facebook” suggestion is significant,
and as such, the team will do more feasibility studies on
this suggestion.

Dear Members,
On behalf of the Management and Staff, I’d like to wish you and your
family, a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2016!
Room for improvement
A fresh new year always seems to bring with it the hope of an even
better year ahead. As your General Manager, it brings me great
satisfaction to have witnessed Member engagement soar in 2015.
Almost 50,000 more meals were served year-long, representing
unprecedented F&B growth at The Tanglin Club. Whilst we often
measure engagement as a proxy for satisfaction, it is very important
that we take the time to specifically gauge your satisfaction levels to
better understand where we can improve. As we enhance the Club,
our financial position strengthens, enabling us to better provide you
every day good value. I have prepared a summary of recent value
enhancements on pages 13-14. Do take a few minutes to review
these pages.
At your service
Member satisfaction is our top priority. The Team and I are very much
committed to doing all that we can to ensure your optimum enjoyment
of the Club. As noted in my December message, January sees us
reach out to you with a Club-wide, Member satisfaction survey. This
tool is a repeat of the inaugural satisfaction survey we issued last year.
We will be measuring where we have improved, and where there
is need for further improvement. This data then guides the General
Committee and Management toward ensuring enhanced outcomes
for the Membership and helps us better allocate our resources. So, we
very much encourage you to make time to share your thoughts in this
very important exercise. The survey is available both in hard copy and
online and only takes about 5 minutes of your time.
Win $1,288
To incentivise online submissions, those who electronically submit their
survey response will be eligible to win $1,288 in F&B dining vouchers,
whilst those submitting hard copies will have an opportunity to win
$288 in vouchers. For your convenience, we will make available an
iPad from Front Desk, to facilitate online participation. Front Desk will
also have hard copies available for you.
You will be able to participate in the survey from Monday, 11 January
2016, until Valentine’s Day. The online link will be issued to all those
registered for NewsBites, midnight of 11 January.

If you are not registered to receive NewsBites, and wish to register,

updates that make an excellent way to keep current on Club news,
promotions, and events. Some Club news, contests and promotions
are only published on NewsBites, so it is certainly beneficial to sign up.
Featuring Ishikawa
Following a sensational Spanish promotion in the Churchill Room
last month, we now spin the globe to Japan, and feature Ishikawa.
Though our sake paired dinner on 7 January instantly sold out, our

Guest Chef Norman Lim will be on hand to deliver
Ishikawa Sunday Lunch on 10, 17, and 24 January. He
will also prepare a special set dinner in the Churchill
Room on dedicated evenings. Please refer to the
pages ahead for more details. Month-long, we are also
selling gorgeous Ishikawa Yamanaka Lacquerware in
the Tea Room. Do make some time to view the displays
and plan to join us for the demonstration on the 27th.
In the spirit of Japan, you’ll also note various beverage
promotions detailed on pages 27-28 for you to enjoy!
Double your happiness
Wine lovers, come ’wine down’ at the Tea Room during
its inaugural ‘Double Happiness Happy Hour’. Daily,
from 6.00pm to 8.00pm, you can enjoy 1-for-1 Wynns
Coonawarra Estate, Riesling or Cabernet Shiraz, for
only $8.95. Our cheese and charcuterie boards will also
be available to complement the wine, so gather your
friends and join us.
Jumbo Doubles
Whilst on the subject of double, I’d like to draw your
attention to the Club’s 17th International Jumbo Doubles
Squash Tournament on page 45. It’s one of the most
exciting events of the Sports & Recreation calendar.
Tang Yun’s Grand Opening
And on a final note, I join the President, and encourage
all of you to join us Saturday 30, January at 11.00am
for our Chinese Restaurant’s Grand Opening. The Lion
Dance will kick off the festivities with a bang, precisely

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LBBS?
CONTINUING THE TANGLIN LEGACY
Under the new Limited Buy Back Scheme (LBBS), Members can sell their Membership to the
Club for half the prevailing $50,000 entrance fee, which means that the Seller will receive
$25,000 in the sale transaction. Any Ordinary or Life Member of the Club can register as a
Seller and tender his membership for buy back as long as his or her monthly subscriptions
have been fully paid for the preceding six months, and continue to be paid until the Club
confirms completion of the sale to the new Member.
A parent Member can also transfer his Membership to his or her child, provided the child is
at least aged 25 and on the Waiting List as of 18 May 2015. However, the parent Member
will have to forgo the $25,000 Seller’s fee and the child still pays the full $50,000 prevailing
entrance fee.

DOING OUR PART FOR THE
ENVIRONMENT: TURN OFF
YOUR IDLING ENGINE
In support of the National Environment
Agency’s (NEA) initiative, we urge all motorists
to switch off their vehicle engines when they
are stationary in the Club premises. This is to
avoid air pollution, noise and fuel wastage.
Under the Environmental Protection and
Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations
Section 21, it is an offence to leave the vehicle
engine idling when stationary, for reasons other
than traffic conditions.

TANG YUN BYE-LAWS
Children:
Children may accompany their parents/guardians for lunch daily and for
dinner on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays at Tang Yun.
We are pleased to inform you that we have selected the name
of our new Chinese Restaurant – “騰雲” (“Tang Yun”).
The Chinese character “騰” means “to soar, or to rise”, while the
Chinese character “雲” is the word for “cloud”.

Based on the 145 entries from our recent Contest, we shortlisted
two entries and finalised the name as a merger of these two
suggestions. The name (“Tang” in Cantonese, and “Yun” in
Mandarin) is a worldplay on our Club’s name, and apt as the
restaurant will be serving Cantonese cuisine.
Dress Code:
Congratulations to Dr Koh Ho Peng and Datuk Tan Kok Hiang!
Dr Koh’s reason for the name is that this is the place where
you can enjoy and feel you are on cloud nine. Datuk Tan
commented that it’s got ‘Tang’ as short for ‘Tanglin’ and this is
the place where families can gather for a meal.
Members, guests or children who are considered to be incorrectly attired
may be refused entry or requested to leave the Club, or any part thereof,
by a Member of the General Committee or the Management.
A big thank you to all Members for your participation and
wonderful support.

(a) General
Members, guests and children are required to be presentably dressed at
all times in a manner consistent with the character and standing of the Club.
The General Committee may, from time to time, vary the dress codes
set out herein for particular events or functions. Such variations will be
made clear in the publicity for such events or functions.
Unless otherwise specified, the dress code in all parts of the Club (also
known as "Club Standard") shall be:
Gentlemen: (i) Shirt (including polo shirt) with collar; or safari jacket;
trousers; with closed type shoes. Socks must be worn in the
Churchill Room.
(ii) Formal national attire of the wearer
Ladies:
(i) Dress, or skirt or trousers with suitable top or blouse; shoes.
(ii) Formal national attire of the wearer
Boys:
Shirt (including polo shirt) with collar; trousers or shorts; with
closed type shoes.
Girls:
Dress, or skirt or trousers or shorts with suitable top or blouse;
shoes
Cut, frayed, tattered or dirty items of dress are not permitted in any part
of the Club.
No racist, anti-religious or offensive slogans or wordings allowed on any
part of the attire.
Outdoor headgear shall not be worn within the main Clubhouse other
than personal religious headgear and hats for ladies. The wearing of
exposed braces is considered acceptable dress in all areas of the Club.

We are pleased to inform Members that The Tanglin Club was
featured in The Straits Times on 16 December 2015.
On Monday, 14 December 2015, our General Committee
Members gathered for the planting of a Saraca tree at the
poolside area, to mark our 150th anniversary. The tree, similar to
the one planted 25 years ago by then club president George
Sandosham, marks a significant period of growth and prosperity
both at the Club and in Singapore.

Tangles, it's a nice spot but a bit dreary. Is it possible to change the
lighting and the colour scheme, and perhaps put in some lively
music befitting a sports bar? I think it will make a big difference."
Many thanks for your email and kind words. With regards to Tangles,
as per the Special General Meeting (SGM) in March 2015, Tangles is
due for some renovation works. It is unclear at this time precisely what
it will entail, but we suspect by June, that we should have a refreshed
look. Tangles is the final piece to the Chinese Restaurant, Function
Room, Admin Office, Business Centre, Tangles project for $2.5M. We
will note your feedback for the design team’s consideration.
"We celebrated our son's marriage solemnisation at the Club and
would like to express our thanks and deep appreciation to Mugu
and Jeffrey for all their efforts in making our special day most
memorable.
Mugu was very patient and accommodating in planning the lunch
menu. Our guests enjoyed the meal tremendously and so did we.
We also applaud Mugu's and Jeffrey's meticulous and excellent
efforts in decorating the room for this happy occasion. All of us were
wowed by the beautiful and dignified yet festive look of the table
setting from the gold tablecloth, mirror pieces on the table and the
lovely crockery and cutlery. The lit up Christmas tree was a sight to
behold! We and our guests had a great time and many "kodak"
moments to remember this wonderful day."

"The ladies restroom is always clean thanks to the lovely cleaning
aunties, but perhaps a welcome addition to each individual cubicle
would be the toilet seat foam cleaner dispensers. Some Members
leave the toilets in a real state."

"Just a note to thank the Team for your help with the revised menu
for my annual dinner. The food was fine and everyone appreciated
it, particularly the roast turkey and the Christmas pudding. Everything
was well organised as usual and the service was up to its usual high
standard. We all had a lovely evening. Incidentally, the Christmas
decorations are beautiful this year, and contributed to the festive
atmosphere. Thank you again for your help."

"I was privileged to take part in the 50km Spinning Bike Challenge at
the Gymnasium on Saturday, 14 November. Like many of the Club’s
events, this event was also well organised. This was largely due to the
efforts put in by Aziz beforehand. In addition, Aziz went out of his way to
help me prepare for the Challenge by measuring me for the Spinning
Bike and also by giving me tips on how to approach it. Although I have
personally thanked Aziz for "going the extra mile", I think it’s only right
and proper that I bring his fine efforts to your attention. It is people like
Aziz who make the Club what it is today."

"For the last couple of months, I have not been receiving The Tanglin
Club magazine. When I enquired with Kumar at the Front Desk to

"This is rather a long time coming, but we wanted to let you know how much
we enjoyed a great night at the Club on ‘Hallow’green'. A lot of work obviously
went into it, and everything went so well, from the décor, to music, and of
course, food and drink. A special mention must be made of the staff who
were marvellous throughout. Even through the late-night World Cup rugby
viewing at the Wet Bar and Verandah, the staff didn’t flag! Although we had
seats in the Tavern, where we had a great time, we especially loved the way
the poolside had been decorated, and were only sorry that the band down
there, which was excellent, was a bit under-appreciated. There seemed to be
nobody left in the Wheelhouse to enjoy them, but we went down to give show
our appreciation. All in all, it was a most enjoyable evening, so many thanks to
you and your staff."
The Team had a blast at Hallow’green too. It makes for a nice change for us
as well. Almost 800 Members and guests joined us and the reviews were really
encouraging. We’ll be planning for more fun in 2016. Keep your eye on our

"The ‘Riedel Wine Glass Tasting by Georg J Riedel’ event was a fascinating,
informative, educational and sensual experience. A presentation any
oenophile should attend. The tapas were a nice stylish conclusion to the event.
We will be updating our Riedel collection! The black draping to the tables and
chairs were very elegant and appropriate. The room looked very impressive
and serious on entry.
In addition, the Club Party was stylish, fun and appropriate to the 150th Club
Anniversary. Congratulations and thank you for all the effort you put in."

It’s been an incredible year. With one month remaining in this financial year, we have already served about 50,000 more meals than in the prior
year for the corresponding period. We are delighted to have your growing support and engagement. With bolstered patronage, our financial
position is strengthened by helping us cover our fixed costs, and therefore, it enables us to find ways to create more every day good value
for you and your family. We hope you have already noticed the positive shifts, but if not, the following is a summary of some of the key value
enhancements that the F&B Team has made for you as a way of saying thank you for your growing support!
TEA ROOM
Although the Tea Room had a lovely menu, prices
were simply unattractive, with a corresponding
low level of uptake. So we took all of our delicious
wraps and sandwiches and reduced them to
$9.80, from prices previously as high as $16.90.
We reduced our ‘Scones Tea Set for 2’ from $13
to $6.80 and our ‘Full Tea Set for 2’, from $26 to
$19.80. As a result, you may have noticed that
patronage has noticeably increased. Next
month, you’ll want to swing by for our ‘Double
Happiness Happy Hour’ when we feature two
glasses of Wynns Coonawarra Estate wine for
$8.95! That’s definitely something to toast to!
TANGLES
Year-long, we have been offering a daily ‘Express Lunch Buffet’
inclusive of soup, salads, mains, desserts, coffee/tea, and GST for
$13.50. It’s no surprise that patronage has more than doubled at
Tangles. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of this terrific value, do
drop by Tangles soon. Our culinary team whips up a different theme
each day of the week from Thai to Indian, to local eats and Tanglin
favourites like Oxtail Stew.
CHURCHILL ROOM
As we turned 150th, in honour of our founding year, 1865, our crew
re-introduced the ‘Churchill Executive Lunch Buffet’ at $18.65, with
a gorgeous array of antipasti and salads, inclusive of soup, desserts,
coffee/tea, and GST. For six weeks we ran our Señor Churchill promotion
and we are pleased to report that during this promotion, Churchill saw
numerous sell-outs! Come January, we spin the globe from Spain to
Japan, with delicious products from Ishikawa. Do plan to join us!
TAVERN/FIREPLACE
Loads of value-engineering has taken place at
the Tavern and Fireplace. Previously, a single
serve of soup and salad was $20.30, but we
subsequently made the salad bar free-flow,
added desserts and dropped the price by $5.50
to a mere $14.80. In honour of our founding year,
for $18.65, we created a ‘Tze Char Set’ which includes soup, two dishes
and rice which naturally has proven very popular. Our Steamed Cod
Fish was reduced from $25.30 to $20.95. Baby Kai Lan was reduced
from $6.90 to $4.75, and even our Charcuteria was reduced from $22
to $18.95.
Prices for our Tanglin Classics were very much overhauled. Bangers
and Mash, previously $16.80, is now $12.80. Shepherd’s Pie used to be
priced at $15.60 and was recently dropped to $12.80 as well. Steak &
Kidney Pie decreased too; it was previously $16.90 and now $14.80.
Our Burger was reduced from $14.55 to $11.80, whilst the Rack of Lamb
saw a reduction from $35.85 to $28.80. We also upgraded our Fish &
Chips. Dory was replaced by Snapper which costs four times as much,
per kilo, plus we added more fries and reduced the price to $12.95.
We’ve made all these great value enhancements, and we’re pleased
to say that this list isn’t even exhaustive. There are lots of other better
prices to enjoy.
SWEET TREATS
Sweet September saw diners in the Wheelhouse enjoy complimentary
desserts and October selected desserts for $1.50, and come January,
Members can enjoy permanent reductions in the desserts section. As
examples, Cherries Jubilee and Crepe Suzette were $9.80 and both
dropped to $7.95, and our Cheese Board from $11.80 to $10.80. The nightly
Tea Room sell-off of baked goods has been permanently increased from
30% off to 50%.
BOTTOMS UP
For those who enjoy a tipple, you’ll have noticed that we made Monday’s
corkage free, Tiger Tuesdays for 1-for-1 draught, Whiskey Wednesdays,
monthly 1-4-1 whiskey promotions, and the Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label
NV was decreased from $106.50 to $78.00 – deals not to be missed. And
to ensure bubbles that won’t burst your budget, we negotiated a new
Prosecco deal and are pleased to now serve Bottega Prosecco NV for
only $42.95 per bottle, or $8.95 a glass. Now, in January, we introduce
whisky by the bottle at great prices and we'll store it for you at the Wet Bar.
However, if tea is more your speed, you will be pleased to know that Clubwide, we enhance our tea to TWG and though it costs more, the same low
price of $3 for tea, has been retained.
MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
You may have also noticed that we have found more occasions for
musicians to liven up the mood at the Club. Be it our Señor Churchill’s
strollers, to our duets in the Tea Room, to fabulous choirs, be them all the
way from England to our very own Tanglin Choir, to a club-full of live bands
at Hallow’green, we hope we have delivered tunes to suit all preferences.
We also lightly play piped music in the Lobby and the Tea Room and
recently enhanced the sound at the Wet Bar.
WHEELHOUSE
Some of you may be wondering why value enhancements
haven’t focused on the Wheelhouse. Whilst we did change
the soup and salad bar to a free-flow format, you may be
interested to note that approximately half of the 550,000 meals
served a year at the Club are enjoyed at the Wheelhouse. Its
prices are made attractive by a subsidy investment by the Club
of approximately $500,000. With this subsidy, you are enjoying
terrific value every day.
TANG YUN
And the best saved till last – Tanglin finally opens its doors to
Tang Yun, our first Cantonese restaurant in our 150 year history,
just in time to usher in the Year of the Monkey. The soft opening
is 2 January, and for the first three weeks, we will be offering a
50% discount to diners wishing to help us prepare for our grand
opening. Seats are restricted, and grow weekly from 38 pax, to
68, and finally, in the 3rd week, to 80 pax. Do plan to join us for the
grand opening on Saturday, 30 January, at 11.00am. The Lion
Dance will begin at 11.28am, followed by a ribbon cutting and a
complimentary feast for all to enjoy!
Granted all the extra patronage and support has strained our
service levels, we do sincerely apologise if at times we have
let you down. Do let us know where you feel there is room for
improvement. With your feedback, we will endeavour to serve
you and your families even better in 2016.

For a span of 400 years, Ishikawa was ruled by some of
the most talented samurais who summoned highly skilled
craftsmen from all over Japan, turning Ishikawa Prefecture
into a region that fostered cultural development. Between
1570 and 1592, Japanese craftsmen who had moved
to the Ishikawa Prefecture first developed Yamanaka
Lacquerware.
Till today, the Ishikawa Prefecture boasts of being the area
with the highest output of lacquerware in Japan. One of its
specialties lies in its special Japanese technique of carving
the wooden frame (kiji) of the object that is to be lacquered.
This technique allows objects to be finished with the beautiful
wavy design of the wood’s grain.
This 7 to 27 January, we will be displaying the intricate
Yamanaka Lacquerware in the glass cabinets facing the Tea
Room. From uniquely handcrafted iPhone cases, fountain
pens, mouse pads, ornament plates, to sake ceremony sets,
there is something for everyone.

Research shows that children’s early reading achievement scores
are strong predictors of later language proficiency and academic
achievement scores. Children, apart from being instructed on how to
read, should also be inducted into leisure reading as early as possible
so that they develop into proficient and avid readers. In view of this, this
awareness talk aims to provide parents with information on important
milestones in reading among young children so that their ability to acquire
age appropriate reading skills are maximised. In addition, information will
be provided on quality children’s literature and how to nurture in children
a love for reading at a young age so that they become lifelong readers.
About the Speaker
Dr Chitra Shegar was an Assistant Professor at the English Language and
Literature Department of National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore
from 2004 to 2015. Her areas of specialisation are Language Acquisition,
Children’s Literature and Literacy instruction. Dr Shegar regularly conducts
workshops on reading for parents and teachers in Singapore and
internationally. Currently, she is the Director of Reading Edge Academy
Pte Ltd and advises several Singapore educational institutions on reading
projects. In 2011 she was conferred the title of ‘International Visiting Scholar
to Wheelock 2011-2012’ (Boston, USA) in recognition of her work with preschoolers on reading.

November is that time of the year when we look forward to bouncing back from being dazed, abused and amused over the
years in the annual Staff vs Section game. While we have sworn Revenge (full battle cry please!), the Staff have looked at us
in a bemused fashion, and then gone ahead to put us in our place. This year they were kinder, in that they beat us by just over
200 points. As a comparison, some of the previous beatings had left us groaning in absolute despair and asking 3 questions:
"How? Why? Again?"
After a bit of a repast, a huge thank you to the Staff for their much appreciated work from Convenor Rick Bryant, 24 players
sat down to do battle. Staff beat the Players in most of the areas and took kindly to limiting their overall lead. The who's who of
the winners are Aru for the highest total score, Mary Lee for the highest game score, and Devraj and Raj as the highest scoring
pair. Sudin, Clara Tan, Hendry Goh and James Soh sewed up the other prizes on offer too. Our thanks to Club President Robert
Weiner for gracing the occasion, and our heartfelt thanks to all the Staff who could make it to another memorable game.
We went in to the final game of the year with 4 players in the running for the Championship and the Balut Max trophy. With a "Tally
Ho!" from Rick we were off and running. From the noise and rubble, Sethuraman trickled over the line to take the Champions
trophy with a best of 6 games score of 3,652, Mavis Light as runner-up a scant 11 points behind and Bansi Sethuraman bagging
the 2nd runner up 20 points adrift. Anthony Rawilson's cameo appearance and 694 points total score got him that prize; Grace
Goh slammed a 152 game high in the final session and took that prize. The pairs trophy was won by Lilian Lee and Mavis, and
Nina Menon took home the prize for the being the highest scorer in the Inter-Club games. The Balut Max trophy, donated by
Fatema Sadiq, was won in its inaugural by Mavis. Well done Mavis on fighting off all comers for the big one!
The assembled then filed into The Fireplace, and after a short speech of "Have Fun!" from Rick, we tucked in, slurped and
supped to a very necessary and well deserved merry evening. Balut, as you know, can be exhausting.

in the Billiards Section with Tom Chamberlain coming up tops as the undisputed
winner for the night and eagerly sending challenges to the likes of Arshad
Bhojani and Cheung Yew Tak who were conspicuously absent!
A major highlight at the end of the year was the Ewing Cup played against
the Singapore Cricket Club. The Tanglin Club put up a formidable team and
an incredible fight, but the Singapore Cricket Club, fresh from their year-long
training with World Champion Peter Gilchrist, gave us a fight that we could not
win. Thankfully, there was enough whiskey and laughter all round to make the
afternoon simply a really enjoyable one! Thank you to our amazing team for
playing that day – all deserving honourable mentions: Yew Tak, Hugh, Davin,
Neville, KK Chong, Zhi Cheng, Adrian and Alex.

CHRISTMAS BRIDGE
Friday, 4 December 2015
Once again, our Christmas Bridge event was completely SOLD
OUT with an overwhelming response of close to eighty Members
and guests.
As the players streamed into the Raffles Room, beaming approvingly
of the festive decorations, each was greeted with a glass of
Proscecco or juice with soda. Ladies came appropriately attired in
Christmassy colours of red, green or white, lending a joyous cheer to
the whole occasion.
Lunch commenced a little after twelve noon and the two rows of
sumptuous spread with two carving stations certainly made the
traffic flow seem rather smooth. The traditional ham and turkey with
the yummy Christmas pudding, mince pies and apple strudel again
scored top marks.
During the short break, the winners of the annual Club Championships
were announced.

organized for easy movement and running of the game.

and the tournament was over by 1pm. Players then adjourned to The Tavern for an enjoyable lunch.

The Tanglin Club choristers preparing to entertain the audience
A TREE LIGHTING EVENT TO REMEMBER!
Whilst writing this article on behalf of the Choir Section, I am still on a "high"
from our Tanglin Club 2015 Tree Lighting Event. It has to be the best I have
ever experienced. From the Choir's holding area at the Raffles Room, we
could monitor crowd presence. From 5.30pm, the lobby was filling up fast
and the excitement was palpable. By 6.30pm, the place was packed full
of grownups and children standing shoulder to shoulder with hardly any
room to move. The Tanglin Club Choir (24 of us) was augmented by The
Schola Cantorum Singapore to make up a total of more than 40 strong.

With the men in their black and white outfits and Santa hats, and
the ladies glammed up in black with red accessories, we made an
impressive appearance along the full length of the staircase. Against
the backdrop of dimmed lights and the view of a sea of faces
surrounding the splendour of a magnificent Christmas tree, the Choir
sang Star Carol, followed by a sing-a-long for Frosty the Snowman,
Jingle Bell Rock, Joy to the World and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
The adults and children swayed to the rhythm of the music and sang
along with us. For the Choristers, it was an evening to remember
and cherish.
The big applause from the crowd, with some wolf whistles thrown in, was
testament that everyone enjoyed listening to us and that both young
and old were having a good time. Our General Manager, Josie Tulipano,
summed it up for us in a lovely way by simply saying "The Choir embraced
the Audience".

thanks to Albert Tay (Choir Director), Chong Lee Khim (Pianist), The Schola

CHRISTMAS BALL
The Christmas Ball on 5 December 2015 took off with a rousing start from
carols played by the award winning Bagpipe Band of 18th Company
Boys’ Brigade in The Churchill Room. The sing-along of Christmas carols,
led by the Dance Section Choir and Musicians followed. Dance Thrilogy,
with young dancers who were the Singapore finalists in Asia’s Got Talent,
presented 3 dance items of jazz, ballet and tap. The event with 139
participants was a sold out affair and maintained the Dance Section’s
record of 4 fully booked events for the year. To many Members, It was a
memorable finish to the Club’s 150th Anniversary.
Events Executive Anqi will now be taking over the administration for the
Dance Section. In appreciation of her past service, the Dance Subcommittee Members presented Sports & Recreation Co-ordinator Uma
with a token of appreciation.

Darts Section
We have had a full calendar of events of games as well as social
gatherings beginning with the Darts Lo Hei early in February 2015. The
Sixth Annual Darts Championship was held in July followed by the
Members vs Staff Friendly Match in August.
Then the Inter Club Darts Leagues 2015 graced our darts calendar. It
was indeed a challenge when we had to play with the highly skilled
players of the league. Many enthusiastic Darts Members were present
to support and watch the brilliant darts match.
The annual POT event in September at the Singapore Cricket Club
brought about much fun and hype. It was an exciting afternoon
followed by a wonderful evening dinner reception.
We look forward to more exciting encounters with the newly formed
Darts Ladies Team.
Year 2015 was filled with rewarding and interactive games, and we
continue to expand our membership through social events.

month to enjoy a truly wonderful social gathering at the Tangles. It is free
of charge for all Darts Members.
The year 2015 was a successful one for the Darts Section. It is

GOLF SECTION OUTING TO CHIANG MAI
It was an early start at the airport on 5 November for the 15 participants keen to escape
the haze and enjoy slightly cooler climes and blue skies in Chiang Mai. We had no sooner
arrived than we were on the first tee of the Mae Jo golf resort. Despite the lightning-fast
greens, everyone agreed it was a very pleasant course, but the next day, we were even
more impressed by the Alpine Chiang Mai, set amidst beautiful scenery. Just when we
thought it couldn’t get any better, we turned up on day 3 at the Chiang Mai Highlands
Resort, which was awesome, and then on the last day, we reverted to an older course,
Royal Chiangmai, to facilitate transfer to the airport for our flight back home. All the courses
were in excellent condition and it was such a privilege to be able to play on such beautiful
courses in such a stunning location.
There were novelty competitions every day as well as overall prizes for the best scores
over the 4 days, so most of the golfers won a prize at some stage of the outing. However,
Anthony Teo and Nancy Miller were crowned King and Queen of the tournament, with
Paul Gelardi and Jean Murdoch as first runners-up. Well done to all of them!
Apart from golf, we had a great time sampling Thai food, enjoying a well-earned post-golf
massage or two, and the ladies especially appreciated the fact that our hotel was right in
the middle of the main street with nightly market stalls.
All in all, it was a really successful trip and many thanks to Alex Eow for all his hard work in
organising the goody bags, flights and competitions.

ANNUAL SQUASH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
7 November 2015
The Annual Squash Club Championship Finals was held on 7 November 2015.
The afternoon proved to be one filled with edge of seat excitement peppered
with a couple of upsets but nonetheless one filled with good camaraderie and
plenty of beer!
In the Veteran Category Plate Finals, we had a somewhat dubious pair of Phil
Rossiter and Don Hanna going head to head literally – with all the challenges
on the let/stroke calls! You could say that Phil ultimately won both the verbal
and physical challenge of the match! Well done Phil!
In the Veteran Category Main Finals, we saw a very fit Al Aspen go up against
a somewhat weathered but still formidable Darcy McColl. However, this time
age did not prevail against beauty and the somewhat youthful Al Aspen
forged ahead to win the match. Great win Al!
The Open Plate Final was down to Tony Faneco and David Palmer. David took
every advantage of the fact that Tony was just being Tony and played a great
game giving himself a well-deserved victory! Good job David!
The Main Open Final looked set to be a historic match from the very beginning.
It was down to seven-time champion Shane Hagan versus a very determined
Marc Nicholson. The match went into a couple of tie-breakers with the final
match played like almost a death match with a winner take all mentality.
Suffice to say, the match could have gone either way, but Marc played an
almost flawless game to win the day. Congratulations Marc!
Thank you everyone for your participation in making this year’s championship a
well-remembered one. Honourable mentions go to our returning squashers like
Henry Mullen and we must not forget the stalwarts like Bill Gartshore and Steve
Wright. Richard Hill also deserves a mention for being ever so photogenic!
Congratulations again to all our winners and see you all again at 2016’s
championships!

STA INTERCLUB LADIES
DOUBLES B
The STA Interclub Ladies Doubles B this year had nine teams participating
in the round robin tournament. We played eight matches over the
weekends through September and October. The competition was
strong and intense for the three line format. We battled through the hazy
conditions for the majority of the matches. The results were tallied and we
finished as the runner up with two points behind the dominant winning
team. An overall successful result for our Tanglin Ladies STA Interclub
doubles team this year.
Kudos to Bianca Choy who played many of the decider matches and
won three crucial matches with her partners.
Thank you to The Tanglin Club for its support and to Lilian Lum our Ladies
Tennis Captain for her skilful team management.

JUNIOR TENNIS NEWS

FRIENDLY WITH SWISS CLUB
On 22 November, the juniors from The Tanglin Club hosted a team
from the Swiss Club for a Sunday junior friendly match. Players
competed in singles and doubles matches in 10’s and 12’s age
categories. It was great to see the kids enjoying tennis and forging
new friendships.
Many thanks to Pierre and Ken of 40XV who put in an incredible
amount of effort to make the event a successful one. The team
t-shirts (in Club colours, no less!) that were sponsored by 40XV was a
really nice surprise. A big thank you also goes out to the Club’s Sports
& Recreation Executive, Cielito, who works really hard behind the
scene to ensure that the Club’s events run smoothly.

TANGLIN CLUB JUNIOR TOURNAMENT SERIES #4
The final junior tournament for 2015 was held on 13 & 14
November. It was a great event showcasing some quality
tennis. In addition, it was very nice to see some new faces.
After a brief rain delay on Friday, the kids were busy non-stop
with round robin play across a series of singles events.
OUR JUNIOR MAKING NEWS
Congratulations to Clare Cheng, who was a part of Team Singapore at
the Southeast Asian Junior Tournament (28 October to 1 November). The
team secured a Silver for Singapore in the 12/U category. Clare, who is
a regular participant in the Club junior tournaments, is a great inspiration
for the other kids.

FOOD SAFETY
FOR SERVICE STAFF
Food safety is one of the most important concerns in
the food industry. Staff play a crucial role in ensuring
food safety at the Club; as such, the Club recently
extended food safety training to all service staff so that
they will acquire uniform skills and knowledge in basic
food safety and hygiene. This Food Safety Workshop
has helped the team to identify the characteristics of
microorganisms, food hygiene, proper food storage
and food handling, setting hygiene standards, as well
as cleaning and sanitation. On top of this workshop,
all of our kitchen staff attended a food hygiene
certifiable programme, so that we can serve you
better.

PREPAREDNESS
PROGRAMME (CEPP)
To heighten our security and safety, The Tanglin Club
staff attended a Community Emergency Preparedness
Programme (CEPP) conducted by the Singapore Civil
Defence Force on 3 December 2015. The programme
provided both theory and practical training comprising
fire safety, casualty evacuation, emergency procedures
and terrorism. Readiness is our only protection. This
programme has certainly raised awareness of the
current safety issues within and outside Singapore,
and has instilled a greater sense of ownership among
the staff.

EXCELLENT SERVICE
AWARD WINNERS 2015
The Excellent Service Award (EXSA) is a national-level award that
recognises individuals who have delivered high quality service.
In 2015, we had a total of 36 staff being recognised as service
champions. We are extremely proud of Mukhantan S/O Perumal – or
better known as Mugu (Catering Sales Executive) – who was awarded
the Star Award. He is indeed an individual who continues to strive to
be better each year. He was a recipient of the EXSA Silver and Gold
Award in the past 2 years as well. Congratulations to Mugu and the
other well-deserved 9 recipients of the Gold Award and 26 recipients
of the Silver Award.
