Serviced by Rudd Equipment Company First Fi irst Issue 2015 BREAKOUT |3 For some companies, “quality” is just a buzzword. But for general contractor GS Holdings, “quality” has been at the heart of the company for 40 years. It not only describes the company’s work but also the equipment it chooses to use – Hitachi excavators. 4 | HitachiConstruction.com First Issue 2015 BREAKOUT |5 H eadquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, GS Holdings specializes in water and sewer infrastructure and offers a full range of services for municipal/civil construction, including infrastructure rehabilitation, new construction, land development, construction management and design-build. “My father, Glen Sandwith, started the company in 1974, and we’ve worked hard to grow and be where we are today,” said Terran Sandwith, president of GS Holdings. “He built the company based on his DNA – quality, integrity and hard work. That is our foundation, and we continue to focus on those things today.” Terran Sandwith joined GS Holdings in 2003 after a professional hockey-playing career, and took his teamwork mentality from the ice to the jobsite. “Teamwork is one of our company’s core values,” he said. “We focus on fnding good people and training them. We encourage feedback from everyone – from laborers to managers – and incorporate good ideas. We all try to help each other out, and our crews work together as a team.” Sending a statement with Hitachi If GS Holdings is on the job, there’s a good chance you’ll see a Hitachi excavator working. Sandwith is proud of this visibility. “Within the industry, Hitachi has a great reputation,” he said. “When you use new equipment, especially something high-end such as Hitachi, it sends a statement about the quality of the work being done. People notice that.” The company currently runs a feet of 10 Hitachi excavators, ranging from the ZX85USB-5 to its newest purchase, the ZX670LC-5. “Since I’ve been with the company, we’ve used Hitachi,” Sandwith said. “It’s always been reliable, quality equipment. We’ve bought used and new, and have had few problems. Also, the resale value for the equipment is high.” The new ZX670LC-5 was quickly put to work on a residential development water- and sewer-pipeline installation. And Howard Heppner, GS Holdings operator, is happy with its performance. “I’ve been an operator for 36 years, and I prefer Hitachi,” Heppner said. “The 670 is fast for its size. It has all the power I need, and the controls are smooth and responsive.” The company also keeps Hitachi reduced-tail-swing excavators, like the ZX85USB-5 and the ZX135US-5, busy working on water main replacement and relocation projects throughout the year for EPCOR Utilities, the City of Edmonton’s utility company. Terran Sandwith President, GS Holdings 6 | HitachiConstruction.com “We do multiple projects for EPCOR within the city each year,” Sandwith said. “With Hitachi excavators, we’re able to get into tight areas required for some of the jobs, like working three feet off a fence line.” Building relationships and a reputation Throughout the years, GS Holdings has focused on doing quality work, standing behind it and working as partners with engineering frms, municipalities, government agencies, developers, subcontractors and vendors – and the work has paid off. “It’s all about reputation,” Sandwith said. “For years, we were thought of as a small company that only did municipal work but had an excellent reputation for quality and integrity. We’ve grown and expanded into more residential, commercial and industrial development work, and our number-one priority is maintaining that reputation.” GS Holdings also has a solid relationship with Wajax Equipment, its Hitachi dealer for about 15 years. “We’ve worked with Wajax for a long time and have a trusting relationship with them,” Sandwith said. “They’re dependable and provide good service and parts. We look at them as one of our partners.” Coming full circle Even though GS Holdings has grown, the company honors its history by maintaining its core values and small business atmosphere. “Although the industry has changed, especially with technology, we’ve kept my father’s values within the company,” Sandwith said. “We still stand on our reputation and quality of work. The reason we can do that is our employees. From our managers, to our foreman, to the feld personnel, everyone takes pride in what they do and in upholding our company values. I am very proud to be a part of it.” GS Holdings celebrated its 40th anniversary in June 2014, and it fearlessly forges ahead while respecting the past. “My father’s frst project for this company was in the Town of Hinton,” Sandwith said. “Now 40 years later, our crews are back out there. You could say it’s come full circle.” GS Holdings is serviced by Wajax Equipment, Edmonton, Alberta. ■ First Issue 2015 BREAKOUT |7 : :28 :30 8 | HitachiConstruction.com :2 :29 :30 2 27 9 T M TIMING IS : E VE R Y T HI NG :28 : :28 3 :30 The EX1900BE-6 has big-time productivity. :27 2 :29 :28 It’s proven by the push of a button. First Issue 2015 BREAKOUT |9 ary Smith is rarely without a stopwatch. Lately, time has been on his side since he started clocking cycles on a new Hitachi EX1900BE-6. : :28 30 A self-described “numbers guy,” Smith is the operations supervisor at North American Coal Corporation’s Sabine Mine in Hallsville, Texas. :30 Gary Smith, Operations Supervisor Sabine Mine :27 2 “I time our trucks, loaders and spotting trucks. I want the most out of every piece of equipment every day. The only way I can do that is to know exactly what that machine is capable of doing and what it is currently doing.” :29 Sabine became interested in the EX1900BE-6 in order to increase its annual production of approximately 4 million tons of coal to American Electric Power’s Pirkey Power Plant. The mine has about 66,000 acres of land under permit and reclaims about 400 acres of land annually. 10 | HitachiConstruction.com :28 :30 :28 :29 :30 TI M IN G IS : :227E :V ER Y TH I N G 28 , SHOW, DON T TE L L It was important for Sabine to have firsthand experience with the EX1900BE-6 before committing to a purchase. ROMCO Equipment Co., Sabine’s Hitachi dealer, made sure the mine got its wish. 0 “We were relying heavily on the machine’s ability to move quickly and load trucks faster than a competitor,” said Robert Fitzgerald, production manager at Sabine. “ROMCO coordinated a visit to some mines south of us so we could take a look and get on the machines. Any time you purchase equipment, it’s an important decision and investment. We wanted to make sure we were right.” Pleased with the Hitachi excavator’s performance, the mine took delivery of the EX1900BE-6 in April 2014. The machine is now a key component of the mine’s truck/shovel operation, loading 150-ton trucks to remove overburden for two draglines, a Marion 8200 and a Bucyrus-Erie 1570. FAS TE R CYCL E TIMES This is the first time the mine has used a Hitachi excavator for loading trucks, and Smith, armed with his stopwatch, is seeing results. As a former operator with more than 30 years of industry experience, he knows what he’s talking about. “The 1900 has really impressed me,” he said. “It’s sped up our cycle times anywhere from three to five seconds per bucket, depending on what machine it’s compared to. That is significant, and at the end of the day, you’re getting a lot more out of it.” Fitzgerald is also happy with the machine’s performance, as he has witnessed the Hitachi outwork the competition. “You can put the Hitachi side-by-side with the competitor machine we were using, and you can physically see the difference in how the machines load trucks,” he said. ADAPTI NG TO A NEW MACHINE Although Sabine also operates a ZX470LC-5 for key ditching and water management work, the EX1900BE-6 is its first mining excavator. John Miller, maintenance manager at Sabine, said the machine needed a few adjustments following delivery, and ROMCO and Hitachi made sure it got the attention it needed quickly. “We had an operator concern over machine functionality, and ROMCO had a Hitachi engineer come on site to address it,” Miller said. “The engineer gathered all the data and had the control software changed and reprogrammed. We were very impressed with the response and the results.” Smith was impressed with the support as well. “The Hitachi engineer got on the machine and experienced what the operator was telling him,” he added. “I’ve seen engineers from some of the competitors go out to the field and stand, point and write. This was the first time I’ve seen an engineer get on a loader, and I liked that. It showed he cared and wanted to understand the operator’s concerns.” Fitzgerald said the EX1900BE-6 is user-friendly and his operators have adapted to the new brand. “When you bring in a new machine, there are always things to work through,” he said. “Our operators were open-minded to using Hitachi, but there was a different feel with the operation of the machine. The controls are very responsive, and they had to adapt to that.” HAPPY AN D PRO DUC T IVE O PERAT O RS Sabine currently keeps the EX1900BE-6 running 12-hour shifts, 24/7. Smith said the operators not only appreciate the machine’s durability but also its comfort. “We have a small number of operators who run the machine,” he said. “The 1900 is their home for 12 hours every day. They like the performance, the breakout power and the comfortable cab. They show pride in maintaining it and really take ownership of it.” When it comes to operator training, Smith actually takes his eyes off the stopwatch. “We do a lot of training here,” he said. “Training is one thing we don’t time, and we don’t rush. We want operators to feel completely comfortable with the machine and understand it.” It’s safe to say the EX1900BE-6 has been a good fit for Sabine, meeting management needs and especially operators’ expectations. “A happy operator is a productive operator. And the 1900 keeps our operators happy.” Robert Fitzgerald, Production Manager Sabine Mine North American Coal Corporation’s Sabine Mine is serviced by ROMCO Equipment Co., Longview, Texas. ■ WEBWATCH CHECK OUT THE VIDEO AT: HitachiConstruction.com/Sabine First Issue 2015 BREAKOUT | 11 ZX250LC-6 ZX300LC-6 ZX350LC-6 ZX380LC-6 ROCK-SOLID RELIABILITY: FINAL TIER 4 EXCAVATORS At Hitachi, we don’t get sidetracked building every kind of construction equipment. Instead, we build excavators and trucks. It’s that kind of focus combined with our legacy of innovative technology that results in highly efficient, reliable and durable machines. Our EPA Final Tier 4 (FT4)/EU Stage IV excavator models are no exception. Equipped with fuel-efficient engine technology, the ZX250LC-6, the new ZX300LC-6, the ZX350LC-6 and ZX380LC-6 lead our FT4 lineup. “These FT4 models showcase integrated, effective engine technologies and productivityboosting features,” said Mark Wall, product marketing manager for Hitachi. “With these excavators, customers get the quiet, powerful performance that Hitachi is known for with the added bonus of cleaner operations.” So what’s new with the FT4 models? Wall and Alex Anhalt, instructional product specialist for Hitachi, share the inside scoop on what you should know. 12 | HitachiConstruction.com NEW ENGINE SOLUTION TECHNOLOGY Front and center are new, fuel-efficient FT4 Isuzu engines that meet rigid emission standards. Hitachi’s FT4 engine technology is simple and efficient, employing cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), a mixture of high-purity urea and deionized water, is a reactant needed for SCR. DEF is injected into the exhaust stream of the engine, runs through a catalyst, and turns the NOX in the exhaust into harmless water vapor and nitrogen gas. The EGR is specifically tuned to further reduce NOX (compared to EPA Interim Tier 4 (IT4)/EU Stage IIIB engines) to meet new emission standards with minimal use of DEF. Extremely efficient combustion and an improved piston design allow the Isuzu engines to burn particulate matter in cylinder. This eliminates the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). COLD WEATHER FEATURES With FT4 models, cold weather doesn’t stand in the way of productivity. The fuel recirculation system eliminates fuel from gelling in the main filter by circulating warm return fuel back to the main fuel filter rather than the fuel tank. EFFICIENCY • Certified EPA Final Tier 4 (FT4)/ EU Stage IV Isuzu engine • Grade reference ready option – Topcon, Trimble or Leica Although DEF begins to freeze at –11 degrees Celsius (12 degrees Farenheit), Hitachi has you covered. The DEF lines are encapsulated by lines filled with engine coolant, which defrosts the DEF. And don’t worry about engine regenerations in cold temperatures – no DPF means no regenerations are needed. • Programmable attachment modes, including thumb EASY MAINTENANCE • Larger hood for improved engine access FT4 excavator maintenance is simplified with features such as grouped filters near the hydraulic tank and a large hood that is easily opened for engine access. An additional hood over the top of the aftertreatment system gives you even more accessibility. Hitachi FT4 machines also feature a conveniently located DEF fill as well as a gauge that indicates fill levels and alerts you when levels are low. ■ • Additional hood over aftertreatment system • Equal or reduced fluid consumption (fuel and diesel exhaust fluid [DEF]) for ZX250LC-6, ZX350LC-6 and ZX380LC-6 RELIABILITY • Single-side ground-level filter service • Battery disconnect switch • Fuel recirculation system to prevent fuel gelling in cold climates • Pressurized fuel system for improved fuel injector operation • ZXLink™ remote monitoring system DURABILITY • FT4 engine solution without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) • Standard upperstructure handrails • Double-seal swing bearing • Reinforced resin thrust plates • Extended grease- and oil-change intervals in nterva als Learn more about Hitachi FT4 models at HitachiConstruction.com.
