At the Canadian Construction Association's Annual Conference, March 22-26 in San Antonio, Texas, author and speaker Jim Gutsche talked about capturing new business and staying ahead of the pack. To do this, says Gutsche, one should adapt and disrupt a marketplace. Sometimes, disruption can come from looking at an industry, determining what people dislike about it, and customizing or changing it. For example, what if you want to invent or market a child's doll. Princess dolls are very popular, but a lot of people don't like princess dolls or simply don't like princesses. In the words of Gutsche's four-year-old niece, "T-Rex's eat princess dolls for breakfast". So, what do you do? You come up with something that is nothing like a princess doll. That is what one inventor/entrepreneur did, when he came up with Ugly Doll—a multi-million-dollar company. Ugly Dolls are odd-looking and very different from one another, compared to princess dolls, all of which are very pretty and appear to be cast from the same mold. Ugly means being unique and different, says the company's web site. An example of adapting is employing trends. Gutsche describes one person as having the choice between working for his family's modest bakery or living a more exciting lifestyle. He chose the more exciting lifestyle. Drugs. Exotic dancers. Police chases. Eventually, he gets caught, and goes This Issues to jail. When he is released from prison, he works for the family bakery, but he decides its not going to be just a family bakery. He turns it into an organic, free trade, fair-wage, solar, socially responsible family company. And, by tapping into all those trends, the bakery is now a $50 million company. The average American is driving a car that is 10 years old, and that just isn’t American.” The ties between US and world economic performance is great. US GDP is about 17% of world GDP, which is about the same size as all of Europe. And, $0.13 of every dollar in the world economy is attached to US consumer spending, and consumer confidence is well into positive territory, explains Hall. Repressed oil prices has a negative effect on industries related to that market, but has a positive effect on other markets, including consumer spending. “Each penny that gas goes down is equivalent to $1 billion in more spending,”said Hall. The end of austerity means the government doesn’t have to take money off the table to accommodate austerity programs, freeing up more cash. Companies have a lot of cash, too. They have been sitting on it during the recession. “We are sitting on the threshold of a frenzy,” says Hall. WHAT ABOUT CANADA? The beleaguered Canadian manufacturing sector is getting a lot of new orders, in part, because the US is at 106.5% of Housing will remain a soft sector. “We have a surplus in housing in Canada,” says Hall. Canada has overbuilt over the last few years, so we will see subdued residential construction in the short term. We’re Your DEUTZ DEDICATED DEALER 150 YEARS OF DEUTZ. The Anniversary. Even veteran buyers and sellers are often unaware of what really goes into the process and the resulting reports. In an age of increasing online transactions, where buyers may not have the time or money to view the equipment in person prior to bidding, the importance of an unbiased inspection has only grown. The following is a brief overview of the process we carry out to produce one of our IronClad Assurance guaranteed inspections. THE THOROUGH INSPECTION OF USED EQUIPMENT The inspector should be a professional who has extensive experience assessing heavy equipment, often a knowledgeable heavy duty mechanic. They are essentially the buyer’s eyes and ears, especially when the buyer doesn’t get the opportunity to operate the equipment before purchasing it. Prior to arriving at the equipment yard, the inspector has communicated with the seller to schedule the inspection and ensure any site specific safety requirements are met. Once at the yard, the equipment to be inspected is verified by review of the serial number to ensure they’ve got the right machine. The equipment is then started and moved out to a place in the yard where they have the room to operate it. Once there, they initiate a number of physical operations that have to occur to actually put the machine through all of its paces. The IronPlanet inspection goes through every single system on the machine in a very methodical way. Not only does the inspector look at what’s physically on the machine in terms of features and attachments, but they also look at the condition. Are there excessive signs of rust? Or perhaps repainting to cover other issues? Inspectors then make sure every major system functions. This includes running the engine so that all of the fluids are up to operating pressures. They do this to verify if there are any leaks and to identify any other issues that could affect value. The goal of the inspection is to give an accurate representation of the machine’s condition, how it’s equipped, and how well it functions. Once the machine is fully warmed up, inspectors will do another visual walk-around noting items they may want to closely review later in the inspection. In addition to leaks, they look for frayed hoses and anything that might be a safety issue, like tires or welds. Inspectors work from a checklist, which is specific to the machine type, in order to conduct inspections in a methodical way. Working their way from front to back, inspectors take detailed pictures and make notes in real time to ensure they cover all key items and capture all pertinent information. Good inspectors are thorough and conduct multiple walk-arounds. Not only do they look for things like tire wear, they also check tire brand and size, looking for obvious things like “do the tires match?” Inspectors want to see if they are new, recapped, or even damaged. They note every detail including missing lug nuts and rim condition. The inspector does everything from running the equipment and listening to the engine, to looking underneath the machine and following contours to identify leaks or weld issues. A crack in the frame or another structural component could be a big problem even if everything else looks great. highlights the true condition of the equipment and should be very comprehensive, including: ■■ Free & accessible: Inspection reports should be free and easily accessible ahead of the sale. This is especially important for online auctions so bidders can best review the equipment being sold and prepare in advance. ■■ Ratings & descriptions: An inspection report should include ratings of a machine’s key systems and components as well as comments that provide justification for the ratings. Detailed descriptions should also be included so the buyer not only understands the condition of the equipment but also its features. ■■ Laboratory analysis: The inspection report should include laboratory analysis of oil and fluids in major components and systems for contaminants and wear metals. ■■ Quality images: Since buyers rely on photos when bidding on equipment, it’s important for images to be high-quality and for the inspection report to include images of every aspect of the equipment. Ideally videos of the engine in operation will be included with the pictures. ■■ Consistency: Inspectors should develop reports using a standardized process so that the information is consistent. If a buyer is reviewing multiple track loaders or excavators they need to be able to compare apples to apples across items, and make their bid with a thorough understanding of the differences in condition and features. ■■ Buyer protection: Inspection reports should be backed by a guarantee so that the buyer knows the report is a true representation of the condition of the equipment. This allows buyers to bid on equipment with a high degree of confidence on site or online. A good inspection process and report is a cornerstone of the trust between buyers, sellers, and a marketplace. Understanding that process is important for everyone involved in the transaction. Sellers should feel confident that reports are in depth and accurate representations of the equipment they are bringing to market, and buyers should feel like they can bid with confidence. If you can trust that the machine you are reviewing in both the pictures and the report is going to be exactly the machine you get with a winning bid, you’ll likely continue to purchase equipment online as a satisfied buyer. This new tread design in non-directional and optimized to provide superior tread life when used in hard surface applications. Designed for asphalt and other solid surface applications, this new tire is the hard surface version of the Michelin XMCL all-terrain backhoe radial tire, made for loose soil applications. The Michelin BibLoad Hard Surface is designed to carry out a large number of lateral, longitudinal and transversal movements on hard, wet and even snow-covered surfaces. To meet all these performance challenges Michelin developed an innovative, multi-directional tread and robust sidewalls. Launching initially in two sizes in January: the 400/70R20 and the 460/70R24, the Michelin BibLoad Hard Surface will add six other sizes throughout 2015. The Michelin BibLoad Hard Surface offers four clear advantages: ■■ Greater longevity thanks to make the block more rigid rean optimized footprint gardless of the tread depth. ■■ Reduced hourly costs com- The new tread design also inpared with a lugged tread, resulting from its superior longevity ■■ Enhanced resistance to cuts and scrapes thanks to its reinforced sidewalls ■■ Improved comfort and stability thanks to the rigidity of the tread With its patented tread, the Michelin BibLoad Hard Surface is the first tire with diamond-shaped tread blocks made up of beveled facets. Offering six different grip angles, these progressive facets cludes sipes which increase the amount of biting edges on the tire and facilitate the evacuation of mud. These sipes greatly increase traction in snow removal applications. “The Michelin BibLoad Hard Surface tire offers radial construction, steel belts and reinforced casing for puncture resistance,” said James Crouch, compact equipment segment marketing manager for Michelin North America. “It also has proven to be an ex- Michelin announced that its new Michelin BibLoad Hard Surface radial tires cellent snow tire.” are on sale at tire dealers throughout North America. New Trailer Tire Joins Roadmaster Line Up There’s a new Roadmaster tire on the highway specifically engineered to withstand the demands of drop-deck trailers. The new RM272 features a new tread design and compounding that provides improved treadwear and protection against cutting and chipping. With 16 /32-inch tread depth, it’s available in size 255/70R22.5 in load range H. “It’s one tough tire designed for one demanding application,” said Gary Schroeder, Director of Commercial Vehicle and OEM Sales for Cooper Tire. “Of all wheel positions, tires on a drop-deck trailer take some of the harshest punishment; often, they don’t get replaced due to mileage, they get replaced due to tread damage, such as scrubbing or tearing. The new RM272 is designed to withstand these conditions, and we believe this tire will be a top performer in the industry.” Featuring a four-belt steel casing, the RM272 has a slightly rounded tread footprint, along with a reinforced shoulder, to help withstand extreme side forces. “Withstanding scrubbing and tearing is what this tire is all about,” said Schroeder. “When the tire was in development, we tested its performance against three types of concrete surfaces to match difficult real-world conditions, including concrete with exposed limestone, and grooved bridge decking. These tests enabled Cooper engineers to validate that the tires’ durability and performance levels exceeded everyday operating conditions.” The Roadmaster RM272 was also designed to ward off irregular wear and damage due to curbing. Thanks to the tire’s rounded footprint, pressure distribution is optimized along all the ribs, which helps prevent premature wear on the intermediate ribs. What’s more, the tire is tough enough to withstand the impacts that come with riding up and over curbs. 913-947-3934 (LUGS) 855-575-5847 TOLL FREE www.bairproducts.com Email: info@bairproducts.com - Parts Can Be Installed W/ Factory Parts - Installation Videos On YouTube - CAT / ASV / TEREX PARTS DRIVE CARRIER PARTS • Greaseable Bearing Carrier • 25% Thicker Steel Plates and Sprocket Base • Inner/Outer Sleeve Tubes HYDRAULIC TRACK TENSIONERS Got Lugs? • Tighten and Loosen Tracks In Seconds with a Grease Gun • No modifications Factory Axle Bair’s Axle HYDRAULIC TRACK INSTALLATION KIT Bolt-On Replacement Track Drive Lugs SOLID ALLOY WHEELS CAT 247/257/267/277/287 ASV / Terex 50/60/85/100 STOP TRACK DERAILMENTS ON COMPACT TRACK LOADERS • Capture the Track’s Cleats At All 4 Sides • Turn Single/Double Sided Factory Wheels Into Triple Sided • Cat & John Deere Compact Track Loader • Install rubber tracks fast with Hydraulic Tools A10 | April 13, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com Demolition 2015 Brings Down the House Demolition 2015, March 21-24 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, was a success with a full exhibit hall, plenty of seminars, and great attendance. The trade show allows companies involved in the demolition process to learn best practices, find solutions, and benefit from the invaluable networking opportunities. Keynote presenters included financial educator Chris Hogan and futurist David Zach. While serving as Vice President at a well-respected company, Chris Hogan realized how much money issues were negatively impacting families and marriages, and now promotes financial education as a way to protect wealth and secure the future for today’s business leaders. David Zach is one of the few professionally trained futurists on this planet, having earned a master’s degree in Studies of the Future from the University of Houston Clear Lake. During this presentation, attendees gained some practical ideas about trends for the demolition business over the next ten years and a general understanding of everything else we hear about the future. The National Demolition Association is the voice of the Demolition Industry representing more than 800 companies engaged in a wide range of demolition activities. The NDA provides education, advocacy, and industry updates to members while increasing public awareness of the economic and societal benefits of demolition. Standard features on the GD655-6 include a Turbo II precleaner, independent blade lift float, front mounted work lights, and a toolbox with lock. Also standard on the grader are 10 control valves, which means two extra valves with linkage for additional attachments. In addition, the GD655-6 has provisions for ripper and grade control installations. WORK EQUIPMENT AND HYDRAULICS A closed-center, load sensing (CLSS) hydraulic system with a variable displacement pump supplies flow and pressure only when required, resulting in less heat and fuel usage. Direct acting control valves designed and built by Komatsu provide an outstanding operator “feel” and predictable system response. A circle slip clutch for added reliability comes standard, as well as greaseless circle wear plates for extra durability. Improvements to the front frame, circle, and draw bar provide increased structural strength and durability. The GD655-6 features Komatsu’s dual-mode transmission designed and built specifically for Komatsu motor graders. This drive train incorporates a powershift transmission with eight forward speeds and four reverse speeds, coupled to the SAA6D107E-3 engine by both a torque converter and a direct drive lock-up clutch. This design gives operators the best of both worlds; direct drive delivers high travel speeds and lower fuel use, and the torque converter delivers increased tractive effort and fine control at lower speeds. The driveline provides on-the-go, full power shifting as well as inching capabilities and automatic shifting in the higher ranges. Engine stall prevention is controlled electronically and automatically by disengaging the lock-up clutch (switching to torque converter mode) when handling heavy loads. Thanks to the new Komatsu SAA6D107E-3 engine, owners and operators can expect to burn 5% less fuel in “power mode” and 15% less in “economy mode”, compared to the previous model. An auto idle shutdown feature also comes standard. It curbs fuel consumption and service meter reading by turning off the engine after an idle-time interval set by the operator. The GD655-6 features the longest wheelbase in its class, claims Komatsu, with 6.5 metres (21.3 feet) for good grading performance. Despite the long wheelbase, the GD655-6 maintains a turning radius of 7.4 metres (24.3 feet). Komatsu’s EPA Tier 4 Final engines are built on the strength of its proven Tier 4 Interim foundation. By integrating Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR), the Tier 4 Final engine further reduces NOx emissions using Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The Komatsu Tier 4 Final engine uses an advanced electronic control system to manage the airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters and after treatment functions to optimize performance, reduce emissions, and provide advanced diagnostic capability. The result is lower fuel consumption with no loss of performance. Komatsu continues to use a Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger (KVGT) and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve for more precise temperature and air management control as well as longer component life. For product reliability and durability in demanding conditions, Komatsu developed the entire system, including the control software needed to effectively operate the after-treatment system. This control system is also integrated into the machine’s onboard diagnostics systems and Komtrax, Komatsu’s standard telematics system. The large, low profile cab of the GD655-6 provides a comfortable and quiet work environment. The ROPS/FOPS certified, hexagonal cab provides excellent visibility to the work equipment. Operators can tilt the center control console forward or backward to simplify entry and exit. An auxiliary input to connect media devices and two 12-volt ports also have been added. A new, high resolution seven-inch LCD monitor offers enhanced capabilities and displays information in multiple languages for global support. Through the monitor, the operator can easily modify settings such as the Auto Idle Shutdown or reversing hydraulic fan, check operational records, such as driving history or fuel/DEF consumption and monitor the Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF). The operator can also view tips for cutting fuel consumption from the ECO Guidance function via the monitor. A rear-view camera with separate seven-inch LCD monitor comes standard and mounts above the front windshield for operator convenience. Large, hinged, lockable doors are standard and provide easy access to all daily service check points. The tandem oil check port is conveniently located at the end of the tandem. The battery box and master disconnect Featuring 163 net kW (218 hp), the GD655-6 is powered by a Komatsu SAA6D107E-3 engine that is EPA Tier 4 Final emissions certified. switch have been relocated to prevent dust accumulation inside the box. The GD6556 has ground level fuel and DEF access to make refueling easy. The DEF tank features an external sight gauge to prevent overfill and spillage. The GD655-6 is equipped with a standard reversible cooling fan to purge debris from the coolers. Dust boots have been added to the control valve spools for additional protection from environmental concerns. TOUGH SPRING JOBS HAVE MET THEIR MATCH. We’ve taken your recommendations and designed larger, quieter operator stations, best-in-class visibility and curved-glass swing-out doors for more comfort and convenience during the workday. April 13, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com A13 | Manitou Introduces MLT 634 Agricultre/Multi-Purpose Telescopic Loader Semi-compact while providing full-sized performance in capacity and lift height, the Manitou MLT 634 rounds out the North American MLT Series line up. “We are excited to offer an agriculture telescopic material handler that fits the needs of those customers looking for a semi-compact machine with full-size performance,” says Steve Kiskunas, Product Manager for Manitou Telescopic Handlers. “The MLT 634 will fill the gap between the MLT 625 and MLT 840 models, delivering quality, reliability, and versatility to many applications, especially the agricultural segment.” With a maximum capacity of 3,175 kilograms (7,000 pounds) and a maximum lift height of 6.05 metres (19.8 feet), the MLT 634 agriculture/multi-purpose telescopic loader is the ideal choice for versatility, performance and comfort. Specializing in material handling tasks, this unit excels in livestock feeding, harvesting and loading and unloading applications. Powered by a 90 kW (122 hp) Interim Tier IV, Deutz diesel engine, the MLT 634 is loaded with the right power needed to complete large jobs. The Power Shuttle Torque Converter transmission offers four speed drive with one in reverse, delivering a maximum torque of 343 ftlbs. Power Shuttle shifting provides smooth direction changes without the need for a clutch, reducing fatigue and increasing productivity. The torque converter ensures the optimal torque for speeds from 0 to 35 km/h (21 mph). The Manitou-patented Duplex boom design creates a more compact structure. Thin-walled, high quality steel results in a stronger overall design with exceptional loading capabilities. A reduction in overall weight of the internal components increases lifting capacities with a minimal increase in machine size. Comfort is standard for operators spending much of their day in the cab of a machine. The MLT 634 features a fully enclosed cab with heat, defrost and air conditioning, and a deluxe, adjustable suspension seat. For greater operator efficiency, switches and controls are grouped according to function. Drive, boom, and hydraulic functions are all controlled by the Joystick Switch and Move (JSM) control, leaving the other hand free to operate the steering wheel. A highly-visible dashboard displays the hour meter, speed, travel direction, B e Smooth operation when lowering and extending the boom is made possible by cushioned stops on the lift cylinders. The optional Comfort Ride Control (CRC) boom suspension system minimizes the loss of material when travelling. Extra attention was paid to the ease of service and maintenance for the MLT 63 4 telescopic loader. A large engine cover is hinged and equipped with gas springs to assist in the lifting and holding in place during servicing. Batteries and other daily maintenance points are easily accessible through the large engine cover. Like the other models in the MLT Series line, the auto-reversing fan is standard for the MLT 634, to keep the engine free of debris during operation, reducing the chance of overheating. Centralized grease fittings make regular axle lubrication easy. V POWERFUL g n stro e strong C versatile attachment changes without leaving the operator’s seat. Standard auxiliary hydraulics offer up to 150 litres per minute (39.6 gpm) of flow to power even the most demanding attachments. Compact Rentals staff stand in front of the company’s Edmonton, Alberta, location. Jerry sits in the cab of a Takeuchi TW65 compact wheel loader, while some staff stand in front of a Takeuchi TB108 compact excavator. So, in 2002, they started working with a Sales Rep named Currie Frank, who sold them 20 Takeuchi excavators and 20 skid steer models. (Frank later left his position at the dealership to become the Branch Manager for W.R. Scott Equipment.) Compact Rentals had a very good relationship with him because of the services he provided, so their allegiance changed with Frank’s move. W.R. Scott Equipment, which is a family-owned company similar to Compact Rentals, features the full Takeuchi lineup, consisting of skid steers, excavators, wheel loaders, and compact track loaders. Since Compact Rentals is a specialty company, they converted a lot of the customers they work with and who used other manufactured brands to Takeuchi by renting the skid steers and excavators to them. “Those companies now actually prefer Takeuchi for many reasons, including the cab size, performance, and the products’ reliability out on the job,” said Jerry. “We have done very well with Takeuchi and while we are not a dealer for them, we display their products proudly here.” One of the big selling points for LaBoret specifically on the Takeuchi skid steer lineup is the room in the cab. He also really likes the excavators because of their strength and reliability. “I really like that the door lifts up on the Takeuchi skid steers; my old manufactured skid steers featured a more rounded door that was very confined,” Jerry said. “Whether you have a larger or smaller operator, all they have to do is lift the door up and back right in there. Not only is there a lot of room, but it also features an air-conditioned cab, which our customers appreciate. The excavator lineup has been great for us as well. They are so reliable and don’t have the breakdowns like other excavators I’ve carried. They are quite bulletproof.” If their new facility is any indication, Compact Rentals has made quite a name for themselves in the Calgary area. Mom and pop shops tend to treat their customers like family and for this family it is not just a mom and pop shop, but a son and daughter in law one as well. Jerry may be nearing an end to his career at Compact Rentals, but he can rest easy at night, knowing that he is handing it down to someone who cares about his dream as much as he does. With 20 years in the family business, Jerry knows his son Rod and daughter-in-law Villy will keep the company moving in the right direction for a long time to come. Two models, the 2030ES and 2630ES scissors, have been widened from 30 inches to 32 inches (762 mm to 813 mm). Accordingly, the model names have been changed to 2032ES and 2632ES. The wider footprint allowed JLG engineers to reduce weight without compromising stability. The result is lighter machines with better weight displacement. JLG’s entire RT scissor line will now feature steel hoods. Steel adds strength and durability, and is easy to repair if damaged. “The weight reduction idea is a unique one that came out of a number of voice-of-customer studies that showed that customers are very much in-tune with the fine balance between price, features, and lifecycle costs, and how these factors drive the value of the equipment they choose for their fleets,” said Paul Kreutzwiser, JLG Industries Category Director – Global Scissors/Verticals. “Customer feedback is an important tool that helps us find innovative ways to mitigate annual price increases while delivering scissor lifts that are high quality and competitive in the marketplace.” The JLG 2032ES is 32 inches (813 mm) wide, and replaces the 2030ES. The TGS2 is specifically designed to perform in the harshest of plowing conditions and is available in both standard and low sidewall (LSW) sizes. “We’ve seen an interest from municipalities and snow managers, especially those in Canada, for a tire that can plow through otherwise impassable roadways, and that’s exactly what the TGS2 is designed to do,” said Johni Francis, Global Product Manager at Titan Tire Corporation. “Prior to the TGS2, there really weren’t many options in the market for a tire like this. We’ve taken it a step further and built a low sidewall version of the tire that also greatly improves breakout force and reduces vehicle bouncing.” The TGS2 tread has an open-shoulder design with a full tread-depth across its surface, providing superior traction in snow, ice and mud. The siping on the lugs provides an additional biting edge that allows this rugged tire to perform where others would struggle. The TGS2 is currently available in standard 14.00R24 and 17.5R25 sizes, as well as an LSW 17.5R31.5 size with a larger rim diameter that helps reduce the sidewall recoil that leads to vehicle bouncing. Additional standard and LSW sizes will soon be available. Titan had the TGS2 on display for the first time at the 2015 Annual Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) convention from March 9-12, 2015, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Logger Adapts to New Logging Approach with Larger Fleet By: Tony Kryzanowski The owners of Norm Roberts Logging aren’t afraid to try new approaches, whether it’s making the transition to cut-to-length (CTL) logging, using the unconventional approach of processing long logs at the stump and then skidding bunches by the top to roadside, or moving their equipment across the border to work in Alberta from their headquarters in Fernie, British Columbia. As one of Canfor’s prime contractors supplying their Elko, B.C. sawmill with 250,000 cubic metres of wood annually, harvested in what is known as the Elk Valley, the company is used to cutting its own business trail in an area dominated by five coal mines, tourists in summer, and skiers in winter. Norm Roberts Logging founder, Norm Roberts is now retired. His sons, Dave and Kevin, now own the company. Kevin primarily looks after the hoe/decking and processing functions, while Dave oversees the feller bunching and skidding functions. The company’s current annual cut for Canfor is “way more than we have ever done,” says Dave. “The most we’ve ever done previously is 140,000.” The wood basket is predominantly green lodgepole pine and spruce averaging 8 to 10 inches in diameter. Because of the volume uplift offered to them, Norm Roberts Logging has increased the size of their fleet by about onethird. The company currently has 14 employees and they log year round. The company is making an adjustment to supplying CTL (cut-to-length) logs to the sawmill versus long logs in an environment where the terrain is either hilly or mountainous, with slope ranging from 20 to 55%. The average is about 35%. Occasionally, they encounter slope over 55%, so Dave fires up his chainsaw and gets to work. In this case, he fells the logs and then a hoe chucker moves them down to a trail where either their rubber-tired skidders or a Cat 527 tracked skidder can deliver the logs to a landing deck for processing. Ground conditions are also extremely variable, ranging from rock and boulders to mud. The transition to CTL logging in a steep slope environment has resulted in some interesting new approaches by Canfor’s loggers all the way from its operations in Radium further north to Elko in the south. Area loggers were used to managing long logs and had become highly efficient in this logging method. Switching to CTL logging with a lot more equipment, an average of seven to eight sorts and processing at roadside has impacted productivity, so loggers are testing various methods to maintain work flow. “We figure that we have dropped anywhere from 25 to 30% in our production with all the additional sorts,” says Dave. “What we have done of course is added machines. We have discussed prices with Canfor and they have come around on prices for sure.” The number of sorts is another point of discussion and Canfor has shown some willingness to make adjustments when there are more than eight sorts. To improve its efficiency, Norm Roberts Logging has taken the approach of clearly defining each phase in the logging process and making sure they have the right tool and highly productive equipment for each phase. They have added a piece of equipment called a hoe/decker, primarily operated by Kevin, to increase efficiency once the wood has been delivered by the skidder to roadside. It’s the company’s newest purchase. “With the hoe/decking, you separate your phases really well,” says Dave. “The feller buncher bunches the wood The switch from tree length to cut-to-length (CTL) logging at Norm Roberts Logging has required a larger fleet to maintain production, but rates have and then the skidder comes been adjusted to compensate. Brandt Tractor has offered Norm Roberts Logging quality service in support of the company’s John Deere equip- Two Tigercat 830 tilting feller bunchers help Norm Roberts Logging produce ment, such as this 748 John Deere skidder. Then the hoe/decker puts it into a big pile. Later on, the processor comes along followed by the loader. Everything is separate and it is actually more efficient.” The move to total CTL hasn’t been a major head scratcher for Norm Roberts Logging as for years, they operated a modified CTL harvesting method, where they process all long logs at the stump up to 49.5-foot (15.1 metres) lengths and skidded bunches to roadside by the top instead of the butt. They discovered and demonstrated that they could skid a lot more logs per load, make fewer skidder trips and cause a lot less environmental damage if they skidded the delimbed and processed logs from the stump to roadside by the top. Their equipment fleet consists of two Tigercat 830 tilting feller bunchers, two John Deere 748 skidders, one John Deere 648 skidder, and a Cat 527 tracked skidder. For processing they have two 2154 John Deere processor carriers and one Cat 324 processor carrier, all equipped with Waratah 622B processing heads. Rounding out the fleet is a Cat 324 hoe/decker with a The slope where Norm Roberts Logging works averages about 35%, so it requires the use of tilting feller bunchers, such as this Tigercat 830 tilter. power clam, a John Deere 200 backhoe and a Cat 525 loader with a power clam. The company’s philosophy is to try to operate newer equipment in all aspects of their fleet because they know from experience that after 10,000 hours, each piece of equipment will tend to start having mechanical issues. They’d rather spend time harvesting and delivering logs than fixing equipment. “I’d rather have a higher payment than have to pay repair bills,” says Dave, adding that the company prefers to purchase the best piece of equipment at the best price for each function than necessarily sticking with a dominant equipment brand. “We like to keep everyone honest and spread out the business to keep everyone competitive,” says Dave. “We’ve found that if you stick to one brand too much, then after a while they think that they own you, and I don’t like that at all.” He adds that not all the equipment suppliers make everything exactly the same, and if a logger doesn’t try something different, how can they know if a piece of equipment is any good. Of all the items on a potential shopping list for new equipment, such as fuel consumption, uptime, power, speed and resale value, Roberts says that while these are important and do factor into a purchasing decision, the biggest issue these days seems to be operator comfort. That has been the final determining factor in their two most recent processor and feller buncher purchases. In terms of service support, Roberts says they are treated well and receive ‘really good’ service from their equipment suppliers, specifically, Inland Kenworth, Brandt Tractor, and Finning. April 13, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com A23 | New Prisec 3 CI531 and CI532 HSI Crushers Sandvik Construction is pleased to announce the launch of the all new CI531 primary and CI532 secondary, Prisec 3 Horizontal Shaft Impact (HSI) crushers. These new generation crushers provides customers with a low capital cost solution, optimum performance and good cubical shape, whilst ensuring the lowest operating cost per ton for a wide range of materials and applications. The latest additions to the CI500 Prisec Horizontal Shaft Impactor (HSI) range of crushers, the Prisec 3 primary CI531, and the secondary CI532, have been developed to deliver exceptional rates of productivity and efficiency. As with the rest of the Prisec range these new HSI crushers possess the ability to be configured into either a primary or secondary crusher operating mode and with this unique, exclusive to Sandvik, patented design, providing customers with unparalleled adaptability, claims Sandvik. Additionally single stage crushing is also a possibility with the ability to recirculate material to the primary versions of the crushers. EXCEPTIONAL REDUCTION RATIOS Sandvik’s revolutionary all new design of crushing chamber ensures even greater reduction ratios than have been previously obtainable. Furthermore the Prisec 3 crushers are able to easily produce impressive reduction ratios through the use of two uniquely designed curtains, which have traditionally required a three curtain configuration crusher. As well as enhanced productivity, this means fewer wear parts and reduced The Prisec 3 crushers are able to easily produce impressive reduction ratios through the use of two uniquely designed curtains, which have traditionally maintenance. required a three curtain configuration crusher. ENERGY EFFICIENT OVERLOAD PROTECTION The CI531 and CI532 Prisec 3 are equipped with an infinite hydraulic curtain adjustment combined with a brake positioning system which relieves pressure, and setting, when un-crushable objects enter the crusher. No hydraulic power is required during normal operation, thus saving on operating power and reducing total power consumption. Both first and second curtains are infinitely adjustable via the Sandvik’s patented adjustment/braking system which is located on the cross beams of the crusher. This system gives hydraulic adjustment of both curtains, via the standard supply electric hydraulic power pack. DEALING WITH CRUSHER BLOCKAGES Crusher blockages have always historically been a problem, especially when operating in a primary mode. Removal of the blockage, with the combined downtime and health and safety risks encountered, are now eliminated with the new generation Prisec 3 crusher. Due to the exceptional features of the crushers no stopping of the crusher is necessary, with no operator intervention inside the crusher, no heavy lifting gear required, all resulting in maximum uptime and reduced health and safety problems. ROTOR & HAMMER DESIGN The rotor and hammers can be considered as the heart of the crusher; this is why those used on the Prisec 3 range are both robust and efficient. Rotors have superior weight and design, essential for delivering the high inertia required for optimum crusher Alberta Launches Pilot Project to Help More Aboriginals Enter Construction Alberta Premier Jim Prentice says a new pilot project will help more than 600 aboriginal people train for jobs in construction. Prentice says the province will contribute $1 million toward new construction training centres at NorQuest College in Edmonton and Bow Valley College in Calgary. The two-year project will deliver career counselling and construction-related training for more than 300 students at each school. The colleges will invest $525,000, with another $750,000 coming from industry and aboriginal groups. “The Alberta Aboriginal Construction Career Centre will fill a gap in connecting Aboriginal job seekers directly with the construction industry,” said Sharon Carry, President of Bow Valley College. “Through fast, focused interventions, such as job preparation and skills training, these centres will play an important role in helping to address projected skilled labour shortages in the construction industry and connect Aboriginal peoples to well-paying jobs.” Prentice says the program is key to helping more aboriginals contribute to and benefit from Alberta’s economy. The result is fewer passes required to load large mining trucks, higher productivity and lower cost per unit of material moved. The standard 994K carries 45 tons per pass, and the high lift version moves 42 tons per pass—18% and 20% more, respectively, than the previous model. The 994K loads mining trucks in the 250, 200, and 150 short ton classes in one less pass than the previous model. The high lift configuration is a six-pass match with the popular Cat 793 mining truck, and the high lift as well as the standard configuration loads the Cat 789 in five passes. The standard configuration loads the Cat 785 in four passes. More engine power, increased hydraulic flow, greater breakout force and rimpull, and improved lateral stability contribute to high productivity, claims Caterpillar. The new 994K also offers options to expand its application range and versatility. The new high ambient package is available to equip the loader for operation in temperatures as high as 50oC, and the standard cooling package offers improved cooling compared to the previous model. CNRE launched to huge accolades in 2013, and the resounding success of that show is carrying over to the 2015 edition. Exhibitors are eager to get their products in front of a qualified audience, such as the more than 8,300 visitors who came to the show two years ago. Master Promotions Ltd. acquired this show in 2012, and since then has worked closely with its west coast partners to ensure it remains a must-attend event for industry representatives, including: ■■ Forestr y (har vesting, woodlots, community forests, silviculture, pulp and chips) ■■ Heavy Equipment (excavation, grading, crushing and screening, roadbuilding, land clearing) ■■ Mining (ex plorat ion, construction) ■■ Independent Power Producers (run of the river, wind farms, solar) Master Promotions Ltd. to ■■ Biomass Industry (wood help ensure that the Expo pellets, power co-generation, bio-fuels) ■■ Resource Industry Professionals (engineers, foresters, planners, GIS technology, project managers, consultants, technicians) ■■ Transportation Industry (air, rail, land, sea) ■■ Suppliers and Service Providers (equipment, manufacturing, machining, camps, caterers) ■■ Training and Employment Services (career planners, assessors, training schools, post-secondary institutions, HR managers) The Canada North Resources Expo is supported by the Resources Expo Society, the organization that formerly ran the show on a volunteer basis. Representatives from the society’s board sit on the show’s steering committee, and are joined by local organizations including the BC Forest Safety Council, Scotiabank, Leavitt Machinery, Initiatives Prince George, Inland Kenworth – Parker Pacific, Wajax Industries, and the Logging & Sawmill Journal. Representatives from these organizations come together to provide input to is relevant to the various resource sectors. The show also partners with local schools and community groups; in 2013, Prince George Big Brothers & Big Sisters held a pancake breakfast at the show, with all proceeds going directly back to help fund their initiatives. Members from a local high school football team— the Eagles Juvenile Football Team—assisted on site with clean-up and logistics and were presented with a donation for their efforts. Similar partnerships are planned for the 2015 edition. Master Promotions Ltd. is committed to supporting the resource community by channeling some of the show profits back into the Resources Expo Society. This funding is used locally for resource education and promotion. The economic impact to the Prince George area is significant, with hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors, as well as committee members and support staff booking hotel rooms, renting cars, eating in restaurants, and frequenting other local businesses. As owner of a forestry operation in South Australia, he needed seven trailers to haul wood chips from the forest to the port (about 400 km (249 miles) round trip). It wouldn’t be light duty. These trailers would be moving non-stop from Monday to Friday over some rough ‘council’ roads, so they needed strength and stability. A larger payload would be ideal, because the more wood chips he can pack in them, the more profitable each trip is. Barry and his sister, Wendy Fennell, are owners of Fennell Forestry, a major plantation hardwood and softwood harvest and transport company in Australia. Established in 1991, the business has since grown from a relatively small operation to become a local forestry leader. To continue to grow the company, Barry says they’ve had to innovate. “We’re always at the ‘pointy’ end of new technologies,” he said. HIGH TECH TRAILERS FOUND IN CANADA It was new technology in trailers that he was looking for on the internet when he came across Titan Trailers Inc., an established, family-owned, family-run trailer builder based in Delhi, Ontario. Using its patented Thinwall technology, Titan builds aluminum trailers that are both strong and light. Titan constructs its Thinwall trailers using panels with a unique extrusion process, providing seamless, hollow-core sidewalls. Because the trailer is made from aluminum and without a steel frame, it weighs about 454 kilograms (1,000 pounds) less than a standard trailer. Plus, Titan has experience building trailers specifically designed for the forestry industry including the 19.1-metre (62-foot, 8-inch) B-Train, which can hold up to 5,000 cubic feet of wood chips in a single run. On trips to Canada, Barry had seen the aerodynamic, smooth-sided Titan Trailers on the highways and wanted to know if he could get them in Australia. He could immediately see the benefits of carrying more volume on each load, generating savings in driving time and fuel costs. He emailed Titan Trailers and soon received a response from owner Mike Kloepfer. DOING BUSINESS OVERSEAS— HIGH RISK, HIGH REWARD But more than an ocean stood in between Barry and his ideal trailers. He needed to weigh the risk of buying from an overseas company with the benefits of owning the Thinwall trailers. He considered the costs and logistics of shipping and assembly and realized that there would be many legal hurdles. There was also still one unknown factor: would the Titan trailers save him money? “For Barry, it was a gamble,” said Mike. “We were estimating the weight.” On the other hand, the rewards were potentially great. Based on Mike’s estimates, the trailers could weigh about 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds) less than standard trailers. That means Barry could ship 3,150 kilograms (7,000 pounds) more wood chips. With a fleet of seven trailers on the road 24-hours a day, five days a week, the savings would quickly add up. Barry decided to take a calculated risk. “We’re not afraid to try things,” he said. “Titan builds hundreds and hundreds of trailers a year. Surely they’ve found all the problems. They’re very well put-together trailers.” Not only had they found all the problems but they were doing things already that Barry hadn’t even thought of, including how to ship the trailers economically. As it turned out, Mike was already sending trailers to the UK for assembly there. In March 2014, three weeks after his initial email to Titan Trailers and after many Skype meetings, Barry, his father Graham, and resident Engineer Doug Thorne flew to Canada to meet Mike in person. Barry said “to see two old guys, with over 100 years combined experience with Australian transport industry, walk around the Titan shop shaking their heads in amazement saying there is nothing like this in Australia” brought a smile to my face. Barry tested the Titan Thinwall trailers on the roads in Ontario (which, he says, are similar to those in Australia). During that trip, Barry also travelled to New Hampshire to meet with a Titan Trailers customer, who remarked: “Obviously, you like to get the best gear because Titan is the best you can get.” The customer’s comment, together with the successful test drive, boosted Barry’s confidence. On trips to Canada, Barry had seen the aerodynamic, smooth-sided Titan Trailers on the highways and wanted to know if he could get them in Australia. Titan constructs its Thinwall trailers using panels with a unique extrusion process, providing seamless, hollowcore sidewalls. TITAN GETS THE JOB DONE The deal was signed. Mike would build, pack, and ship eight B-Train trailers to Barry in Australia. Barry would assemble the trailers there with help from Mike’s staff. It all moved pretty quickly, considering the challenges and requirements, but working in their favour was the fact that Barry had the facilities and permits required to build trailers. However, there were still some challenges to face. Mike had to ensure that the trailers met Australian standards including the red/amber running lights, and that the “road-friendly” Hendrickson Turner suspensions were accepted and well supported in Australia. Barry needed to obtain an import license to receive the flat-packed trucks and a certification to assemble the trucks for use in Australia. Fortunately, Barry already had a certificate from the government, allowing him to do just that. When the trailers arrived in Australia packed in five cargo containers, Mike sent over a team of nine people to assemble them and train the Fennell Forestry staff. At one point, the welders were operating 24 hours a day, but they managed to assemble the trucks within five weeks of delivery. Then Barry sent the trailers for a custom paint job, which took another week. The whole process—from the time they left Canada—only took about two months. Barry’s business decision paid off. “They’re brilliant,” he says of his new fleet of Titan trailers. The trailers turned out to weigh an additional 41 kilograms (90 pounds) less than anticipated, and they’re turning heads in Australia. Barry said that the Australian transportation officials say the trailers are the best they’ve seen. The Fennell Forestry drivers like them too. “It’s the best trailer I’ve pulled in 30 years,” says one driver. “The trailers reflect well on the company, says Barry. “We’ve had 100% positive response across the board.” Although Barry only needed seven trailers for his business, he ordered the eighth trailer to sell, and had no problems finding a buyer. “If we had 12 trailers, we would have sold them all,” he said. Mike is also happy with his side of the bargain and pleased with his team’s work. “We managed to slice and dice the trailers, pack the kits, have them land in Australia, and put them together with no major hiccups,” he says. “That’s impressive!” April 13, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com B3 | DIESEL TRUCK PARTS INC. 1993 Hitachi LX200 2012 JCB 510-56 1448 hours, s/n JCB5CGXGL01403282, damage to boom Ford F550 tow truck 2003 Komatsu WA380-5L 2000 Kobelco SK210LC 2008 Kobelco Excavator s/n A52038 s/n YC0740352 2006 Liebherr 904 1996 Hitachi EX270LC 1987 Grove 8440G TMS-300 s/n WLHZ0441K2K027586. 2008 Volvo EC210CL s/n YL04U0322 2002 Cat 320CL Case CX225SR John Deere 310SJ Cat 314 CCR 2000 Case 9050B 1975 Gradall 6660M 2001 JCB 160 NL s/n ANB01237 s/n VCEC210CE00110257. s/n DAC251387 for parts s/n KJA00198, feller buncher s/n S27005DL NEW WEBSITE! Co. www.equipmentjournal.com April 13, 2015 B5 | Trucking Tech—Autonomous Trucks With smartphones, smart watches, and even smart pants, it was only time that technology took over the transportation industry. And the loudest whispers among the industry have been the development of autonomous trucks. At a global press conference last year, Daimler introduced their first fully autonomous truck, the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck. They say the truck could be ready for real-world deployment by 2025. But Daimler needs to be ready for some serious competition in this venture, specifically from Volvo. The Swedish manufacturer has been developing driverless vehicles as part of the European Union’s Safe Road Trains for the Environment program, which looked at the feasibility of platooning when a single, lead driver in a truck, using what might be thought of as a kind of digital towbar, controls the speed, steering and braking of two or more trucks or cars, to form a road train. Volvo Trucks tried out its autonomous vehicles on public roads for the first time back in 2012. Volvo Cars is playing a leading role in the world’s first large-scale autonomous driving pilot project with 100 self-driving cars using public roads in everyday driving conditions around the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The trailer is operated by an Android tablet with the operator holding their fingers in the tablet and directs the truck where they want to go; remove the finger and the truck will stop. But what has been really impressing industry professionals is the ZF Innovation Truck 2014, which was showed off during an international trade press event in the Aldenhoven Testing Center in Germany. In addition to new technologies, such as the company’s TraXon transmission, expected to reach market in 2016, the truck’s autonomous driving capabilities are what makes this truck special. The vehicle and its technologies were showcased last September in Hannover, Germany. The trailer is operated by an Android tablet with the operator holding their fingers in the tablet and directs the truck where they want to go; remove the finger and the truck will stop. This comes from technology that has been adapted from the automotive world, and has now been working on the prototype system on trucks for more than one year. Notice how the steering wheel is still upfront in the vehicles? Just like auto-pilot in planes the steering wheel is still accessible for safety measures, allowing the driver to intervene during critical manoeuvres. Regulatory and legal challenges remain before the trucks would be allowed to take to the road. But, it’s these technologies that show us how close the future really is. It’s innovative ideas such as these that push the boundaries of engineering and ultimately lead technologies that are useful today, regardless of what present-day thinkers believe. Kenworth TruckTech+ will be available for new Kenworth Class 8 trucks specified with the PACCAR MX-13 engine starting this summer. Kenworth customers will benefit from real-time vehicle health monitoring technology provided by PeopleNet, the telematics provider for the Kenworth system. The system will allow the PACCAR MX13 engine to “talk” with the fleet manager, Kenworth call center and Kenworth dealer to optimize truck uptime and productivity. Kenworth TruckTech+ saves time by providing clear information to the driver and fleet manager on the proper next steps. Fault codes and engine performance data are sent via the truck’s standard modem to Kenworth’s analytics center, where possible root causes are diagnosed and solutions are recommended via email notification. Notifications may include keep driving, no action required; keep driving and have the fault addressed during the next service interval; head to a dealer for service; or pull over to prevent damage. If the customer needs to take the truck in for service, the system maps out the locations of the three closest repair facilities. In addition, the data is sent to a secure web portal where the fleet manager can review the truck’s location, status, identified issue and recommended solution. “This system ensures that customers, Kenworth and our dealers are working closely together to maximize uptime,” said Preston Feight, Kenworth General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “If a repair is needed quickly, the data can be sent to the servicing dealer in advance so they can be prepared to work on the truck, saving customers time and money in initial diagnostics. When the truck arrives, the dealer’s service team can move quickly to remedy the problem.” While ‘home base’ is kept apprised of truck developments—allowing decisions to be made by the fleet manager—the driver has access to data as well. “This new level of analysis and interpretation allows customers to stay on the road longer, or get out of the shop quicker. Kenworth’s goal is to help customers maximize uptime and Kenworth TruckTech+ will make an important contribution towards that goal,” said Feight. The system is included for the first two years a new Kenworth Class 8 truck is on the road, or during the duration of an extended engine warranty period, if purchased. After that period, Kenworth’s remote diagnostics tool can be maintained by subscription. Kenworth NAV+ HD is a next-generation, multi-function communication and entertainment system that is standard for new Kenworth Class 8 trucks ordered with Kenworth’s premium interior package, and available as an option for all new Kenworth Class 6-8 conventional trucks. It’s designed with numerous options aimed at providing solutions to every day needs. Kenworth NAV+ HD features a seven-inch high-definition touch screen, plus integration into the Kenworth SmartWheel steering wheel. The system offers hands-free Bluetooth phone capability, truck navigation through Co-Pilot, iPod and MP3 integration, integrated SiriusXM satellite radio, virtual gauges, camera inputs and a host of other features. In addition, it offers WiFi capability. When Co-Pilot is activated, map updates can be checked for and easily downloaded. “It’s a very easy process which allows fleets and owner operators to have access to all the latest road changes and mapping,” said Jason Skoog, Kenworth Assistant General Manager for sales and marketing. As for the high-definition display screen, Skoog said it’s easier to use with new features compared to the prior system. “We now have ‘pinch and zoom’ capability with several of the apps, which allows the display to be zoomed-in for better scalability and viewing,” Skoog said. If a rearview camera is added to the truck, it can be integrated into Kenworth NAV+ HD. “When the truck is put into reverse, the backup camera can be programmed to automatically pop-up on the screen allowing for easier loading-dock connections,” said Skoog. “Kenworth NAV+ HD is a fantastic system that gives drivers everything they need to make driving easier and more productive. And, when the engine is off, it offers up the connectivity drivers desire to make their truck a home away from home.” TRI-CITY EQUIPMENT Industry leader in on-site equipment and earthworks solutions. B8 | April 13, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com TRACTORS AND TRAILERS: 80 YEARS AGO Pictured here in 1935 is a heavy haul unit typical of the era transporting a Bucyrus Erie cable shovel in the Vancouver, B.C. area. Realizing the need for transportation equipment of all types, C.W. Charles began trucking operations in 1919 as Arrow Transfer Limited. From that early start, nearly one-hundred years later Arrow Transportation is still engaged in trucking as well as marine and rail related endeavours throughout North America. This early 1930’s International Model 104 float tractor, with optional chain drive, is equipped with quite the sturdy cab protector and double drum winch. To be sure, the steel wheels with rubber treads affixed on both the tractor and float trailer would not enhance the ride for driver nor load. August C. Fruehauf, a blacksmith by trade in the Detroit area, began to build custom light trailers as early as 1914. From these humble beginnings, Fruehauf Trailers became one of the true pioneers in heavy hauling equipment through the 1990’s. Although arc welding was still on the manufacturing horizon, this early float trailer featured all-riveted construction. Unlike the removable goose neck floats of today, the high deck heights on these early floats required heavy hardwood planks and blocking, which made for an interesting time for many an operator when breaking over onto the float deck with a contrary machine. To see some 45 restored pieces of vintage construction equipment and trucks in action, including this crusher, be sure to mark your calendars for HCEA Canada’s ‘Wheels & Tracks in Motion’ event June 13-14, 2015 and the ‘Last Blast event October 17, 2015 both held at the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario. To validate the lofty targets set by the DOE, DTNA engineers conducted a series of tests. To measure freight efficiency, DTNA ran vehicle testing on highway routes in Oregon and Texas, one city route in Portland, Oregon, and anti-idle testing in both a cold chamber and hot chamber. These tests resulted in a combined 115% freight efficiency improvement over a 2009 baseline truck. Testing was also conducted at the DTNA Detroit engineering facility to demonstrate engine efficiency by achieving 50.2% engine brake thermal efficiency. DTNA engineers also examined the impact and opportunities for efficiency gains with tire partners. Features such as energy-efficient, wide-based, low-rolling resistance single tires and highly engineered aerodynamic surfaces on the trailer also maximized efficiency. “We took a clean-sheet approach and looked beyond just the vehicle and engine,” noted Rotz. “We examined and analyzed and tested every single angle on the truck and trailer in our quest to achieve the best results.” FUTURE INNOVATIONS During the development of the SuperTruck, DTNA engineers investigated how highrisk, high-reward technologies used in other industries could be applied to Class 8 vehicles. Electrified auxiliaries, controlled power steering and air systems, active aerodynamics, a long-haul hybrid system, waste heat recovery, and trailer solar panels were some of the items assessed. “Part of our process included taking a deep dive into different systems to analyze not only what might be possible, but obstacles as well,” explained Rotz. The SuperTruck team discovered that some of these components, due to regulatory or economic barriers, may not be commercially viable in the near future. Added Diane Hames, General Manager, Marketing and Strategy for Daimler Trucks North America: “The SuperTruck program is just one of many DTNA initiatives that underscore our deep commitment to developing and implementing best-in-class fuel efficiency and aerodynamic innovations that will benefit our customers and our industry for the long-term.” ABOUT THE SUPERTRUCK PROGRAM Sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE), the SuperTruck program was a five-year research and development initiative to improve freight efficiency by at least 50%, brake thermal efficiency by 50%, and reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of Class 8 trucks. DTNA and three other major truck OEMs were awarded multi-million dollar grants by the DOE and each matched the DOE funding dollar for dollar. SuperTruck is supported by the US DOE under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. DTNA began work on the SuperTruck program in 2010 together with Detroit and other partners, including national labs, universities, and suppliers. The only way to know how Doosan equipment will perform at your jobsite is to put it through the paces of your toughest work. Scorching heat. Hard ground. Dusty conditions. It’s one of the most rugged places to show what machines can do. With real-world working conditions, trade media saw how Doosan’s entire lineup of crawler excavators, wheel excavators, log loaders, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks, and a variety of attachments perform. Then, trade journalists tested their mettle by testing orange metal from the operator’s seat. Many of the new machines introduced that day can be seen in these photos. The new Doosan clamp attachments work with multiple bucket widths ranging from 24 to 60 inches (610 to 1524 mm), depending on the clamp type, to help maintain the load when operating Doosan DX63-3 to DX255LC-5 excavators. The hydraulic and pro-link wedge lock clamps have the same characteristics as the non-wedge lock style clamp, enabling precise movement and positioning. When not in use, the clamps retract, making the attachments excellent for demolition, site preparation, and land-clearing applications. The Doosan DX140LCR-5 model offers a shorter tail swing. New machine updates include a new front window design for better visibility, improved anti-skid plates for easier engine access, an upgraded alternator that delivers improved power for electrical components, and a repositioned emergency engine stop for easier operator access. The Doosan DL250-5 and DL250TC-5 (tool carrier) wheel loaders offer improvements in fuel efficiency, operator comfort, serviceability, reliability and remote monitoring with Doosan Telematics. These models replace the “dash-3” (interim Tier 4) models with a Tier 4-compliant Doosan DL06 diesel engine. Customers wanting a wheel loader in this size class can choose between a Z-bar loader linkage for the DL250-5, and a parallel lift-arm design for the DL250TC-5. The Z-bar loader linkage is ideal for digging, heavy lifting and general construction tasks. The parallel lift-arm design helps keep items level while the wheel loader is moving. A tilting cab gives service technicians excellent access to all of the truck’s major components, claims Doosan. The cab can be tilted back in less than five minutes to expedite routine maintenance and repairs. DA30-5 and DA40-5 ADTs have an external engine intake air grille located on the truck hood’s right-hand side, providing cooler air to the engine intake improving engine efficiency. Plus, the air vent helps prevent over pressurization in the engine compartment. The DX300LL-5 log loader is equipped with a fully guarded, heavy-duty long undercarriage and upper structure designed specifically for forestry. Its tracks feature heavy-duty links with double grouser shoes and full-length track guiding guards. Operators can also get a good view from inside the log loader with a four-foot (1.22-metre) cab riser with guarding. Operators can also monitor the log loader’s parameters, such as engine rpm, battery voltage, and front and rear hydraulic pump pressure, while viewing the rearview camera image on an improved seven-inch liquid-crystal display (LCD) screen. Features such as dual-boom cylinders and under-mount arm cylinder placement provide excellent lifting capabilities for Doosan material handler operators, claims the company. The 360-degree hydraulic rotating four-tine grapples available for Doosan material handlers feature a semi-closed tine design, allowing a firm grasp on most materials. The tines are designed with AR400 high-strength, abrasion-resistant steel for increased durability, and the tine tips are replaceable for easier maintenance. www.equipmentjournal.com April 13, 2015 B17 | Volvo Trucks Launches Long-Haul VAH 630 Autohauler Model Adding to its lineup of Volvo Autohauler (VAH) models, Volvo Trucks in North America introduced the Volvo VAH 630, a premium sleeper version for long-haul operations. The VAH family, which Volvo Trucks launched in March 2011, already includes day cab and smaller sleeper VAH models for local and regional automobile transport applications. “We are pleased that we now have a solution specifically tailored to the longhaul segment of this highly specialized market,” said Göran Nyberg, President, Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “As with other VAH models, the Volvo VAH 630 is designed to maximize payload capacity while still delivering the efficiency, driver productivity and uptime benefits that all customers expect from Volvo Trucks.” The new VAH 630 model, which is now available for order, provides long-haul drivers the room they need for rest, meals and paperwork duties. It features a 61-inch sleeper, offering a full-sized bunk, ample storage cabinet capacity and space for comfort and entertainment amenities. The model is available with either Volvo’s D11 or D13 engine. The D11 features 355 to 405 hp and 1,250 to 1,420 lb-ft of torque, while the D13 features 375 to 500 hp and 1,450 to 1,750 lb-ft of torque. The Volvo VAH 630 is also available with the Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission. Other models in Volvo’s VAH lineup are the VAH 200 day cab and the VAH 430, which features a 42-inch sleeper and full-size bunk. All VAH models incorporate unique features, such as deepdrop front axles, low-height Volvo Air Ride rear suspensions and reduced-height cab options provided by Fontaine Modification Company designed to reduce overall height and provide optimal loading flexibility. The lower overall height offers the flexibility to position a vehicle as large as a minivan over the truck’s cab to maximize payload. In addition, a clean top-of-frame behind the VAH cab allows for easier body mounting and trailer hookup. We have great team members at the home office, and great team members on the road. We support each to make a great company and that’s reflected in our success and high retention level. Drivers are truly partners in our operation.” According to Roberts, the “expedite” (team) part of Celadon’s business is growing rapidly. “And we’re confident it will continue to do so with the recent integration of Kenworth T680s with 76-inch sleeper into the fleet,” Roberts said. “The decision to standardize on the T680 for our team operation was based on three main criteria: product reliability, fuel economy, and driver comfort,” said Roberts. “Our teams are out pulling miles and the most important thing to them is uptime. They, like us, can’t afford a broken down truck and worrying about reliability. They’re often driving in the middle of nowhere,” said Roberts. “The second part of the equation Celadon now standardizes on the Kenworth T680 for its team operations. The company’s choice was based on three criteria: product reliability, fuel economy and driver comfort. The Kenworth T680s are being used with 200 of Celadon’s expedited teams in the United States, 50 Hyndman teams in Each of Celadon’s Kenworth T680s is equipped with Kenworth’s Idle Management System, which allows for Canada, along with Celadon’s reefer division. Some driving teams, which Celadon prefers to call partner teams, have less than 1% idle time. Company officials say that saves the company money on fuel expenses, plus the company’s “partners” enjoy the quietness and efficiency of the idle management system to stay comfortable during off-hours. is comfort. Celadon looked through market surveys and knew that operators love Kenworths. It made selecting the T680 an easy choice; the quality, the fit and finish and amenities in the T680 is top-notch, and our partners say they love the truck. Lastly, fuel economy is critical - the aerodynamics of the T680 will cut our fuel bill, and we’re seeing that already.” The Kenworth T680s are being used with 200 of Celadon’s expedited teams in the United States, 50 Hyndman teams in Canada, along with Celadon’s reefer division. A fuel-fired heater provides engine-off warmth in the winter months. “That system is working great, and it’s been nice to have factory installation,” said Roberts. “Some of our partner teams have less than 1 percent in idle time. An LCD display gives full system information, plus monitors remaining battery power, which can last up to 12 hours under load. According to Roberts, Kenworth’s T680 has made its mark on drivers. “It really has,” he said. “When we purchased Land Span in 2013 we had a problem retaining our partners, but that quickly changed when we moved them into the Kenworth T680,” he said. “Trucks do make a difference. We know that.” “Absolutely,” agreed Charles Bullins, who has driven for Celadon for about a year, and prior to that under the Land Span nameplate. “I’ve driven trucks for 18 years, the last 10 with my girlfriend, Tamara. One Celadon driving team, a husband and wife, experience great fuel mileage with the Kenworth T680, between 7.8 and 8 miles per gallon. The team runs the company truck about 250,000 miles annually. The Kenworth T680 is the best truck I’ve ever been in and it means a lot that Celadon didn’t skimp on equipment. We basically live in the truck; we’re out 24 days at a time and it’s very smooth in the ride with absolutely no wind noise. When we’re shut down, I love the swivel seat on the passenger side, so I can do paperwork on the fold-up desk. We also have a 32-inch flat screen TV; we love that.” Bullins said he and Tamara got the keys to the T680 in June and by the end of October had logged 108,000 miles. “No problems to report,” he said. “And we’re getting great fuel mileage—between 7.8 and 8 miles per gallon. We normally run about 250,000 miles a year.” “That’s the kind of productivity and reaction to the T680 we we’re hoping for,” smiled Roberts. “It confirms our belief that Kenworth’s T680 was the right choice for our teams.” 563-872-4112 (DUBUQUE) BELLEVUE, IOWA WWW.JJSCHECKEL.COM ac12bc ab15ss $17,000 We Deliver Equipment to Canada on a Regular Basis! Three of the new trailer models: the 4048TA, 4050TA, and 4053TA, have a 40-ton hauling capacity, and the new 5548TA and 5553TA trailer models haul as much as 55 tons. The five new trailer models will replace the others within the TA Series. Talber t featured t he 4050TA model on March 2628 at the Kentucky Exposition Center during the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. The added capacity on the new TA Series trailers equates to increased hauling flexibility. For example, the 4050TA now has a 36,000-kilogram (80,000-pound) evenly distributed capacity or a concentrated load capacity of 22,500 kilograms (50,000 pounds) in 3.05 metres (10 feet). This allows haulers to expand their range of load opportunities and maximize transportation efficiency, while complying with Canadian province and US state hauling requirements. The TA Series trailers feature a state-of-the-art, industry-leading, 914-mm (36inch) loaded deck height, says Talbert. This low deck height provides additional clearance for bridges and tunnels when transporting tall equipment. The 4050TA was the first model released in the updated TA Series with this low deck height feature, and it is also California-legal, making the 4050TA an ideal west coast hauling trailer. The five new TA Series trailer models feature Talbert’s signature piggy-back cylinder, now with a larger diameter for faster axle travel. The new models also have an increased number of keyholes across the rear of the trailer for additional flexibility for tying down loads, an improved, lockable curbside gooseneck toolbox that includes a weather resistant door seal, as well as a chain rack and other hardware upgrades. Another key advancement with the new TA Series trailers is the standard metal e-chain for the air and electrical lines, THE BIG EVENT 2015 CONNECTING YOU TO THE MINING INDUSTRY The new TA Series trailer models feature Talbert’s signature piggy-back cylinder, now with a larger diameter for faster axle travel. which now makes it both easier and less expensive to add optional dock levellers as an aftermarket option. The TA Series trailers feature key trailer components for easy loading on its seven-degree load angle. Talbert’s standard equipment for the series includes a 6,750-kilogram (15,000-pound) planetary winch with a two-function, wireless remote. It assists in moving equipment on and off of the trailer by making it possible for one person to load a piece of equipment without leaving the vehicle. Talbert also offers two other upgrade options; a six-function remote and a 13,500-kilogram (20,000-pound) planetary winch. The six-function remote provides the operator with the ability to adjust the movement of the axles, winch and deck while loading. The TA Series trailers come standard with double keyhole tie-down slots on top of the outside beams and recessed in the center of the main deck. For recessed tie-downs, Talbert includes a metal basket that is mounted below the deck to protect the main cylinder from excess chain. Talbert has multiple, optional features to enhance the TA Series trailers. Available coating selections include the standard Valspar R-Cure 800 paint in Talbert’s signature red and optional Valspar Aquaguard for corrosion protection. Additional optional equipment includes a 1.22-metre (48-inch) aluminum/steel bulkhead with strobe and work lights, a centralized lubrication system and a Right Weigh load scale. Manitoba Regulation Change Paves Way for Wide-base Tires www.canadianminingexpo.com - Toll Free 1-866-754-9334 or 1-705-264-2251 PLATINUM SPONSORS GOLD SPONSORS POWER SYSTEMS EVENT SPONSORS A privately owned Canadian company Manitoba announced changes to provincial regulations in February allowing for the use of new generation wide-base single tires that help reduce fuel consumption and improve gas efficiency. Manitoba now allows full loads on rigs using wide-base single truck tires on provincial highways that meet national load ratings known as Roads and Transportation Association of Canada (RTAC) highways. These include the Trans-Canada Highway and Centre Port Canada Way. The new generation wide-base tires can now be used at full RTAC weights on RTAC highways. The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) has been calling for similar regulation changes on behalf of Alberta trucking fleets. “We are encouraged by the move Manitoba has made on behalf of that province’s fleets and for the environment,” says Lorraine Card, Executive Director, AMTA. “We are working closely with Alberta Transportation to encourage a regulation change that would provide Alberta trucking fleets with the same benefits this technology now brings to their counterparts in Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba. Alberta remains at a competitive disadvantage until these tires are permitted here.” In making the announcement, Manitoba Jobs and Economy Minister, Kevin Chief, said: “These rule changes will mean greater opportunities for companies that rely on tractor trailers for shipping and capitalize on our geographic advantage being at the center of the continent. This announcement means trucks travelling north from the United States that use the new generation tires can enter Manitoba for destinations like Centre Port Canada.” Some of the benefits associated with wide-base single truck tires include: ■■ less weight than dual tires, resulting in increased hauling and payload capacity; ■■ lower fuel costs and decreased greenhouse-gas emissions; ■■ reduced noise and tire recycling waste; ■■ improved ride and comfort for operators; and ■■ reduced handling and costs associated with tires, resulting in considerable saving and increased productivity for operators. April 13, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com B21 | Galbreath Expands Lightweight Roll-Off Trailer Line The new Galbreath M6-250 Series Trailer is Ideal for Heavy Scrap and Construction Debris. Galbreath, a Wastequip brand, announces the launch of the M6-250 Series Roll-off Trailer. This powerful trailer is an exciting addition to Galbreath’s newest line of lightweight trailers. Designed to handle roll-offs with heavy loads like scrap and construction materials, this lightweight trailer weighs only 7,000 kilograms (15,650 pounds), has a shorter overall length for greater manoeuvreability, and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 32,625 kilograms (72,500 pounds). With container size capacity up to 9 metres (30 feet), more materials can be transported per haul. The M6-250 series roll-off trailer is available in outside rail (OR), extendable tail (EX), inside/ outside rail (IO), and deadlift (HH) configurations. It features two telescoping lift cylinders that provide greater stability when lifting heavy loads. Plus, its lower trailer height accommodates taller containers than standard trailers. The M6-250 series trailer is designed for safety and ease of operation with features that include: ■■ “Plug n’ Play” wiring system eliminates crossed wires, loose connections, corrosion, and splices. ■■ Automatic front container spring-loaded locking system and rear container hold-downs help keep container in place. ■■ Hoist-up alarm is a standard safety feature; when hoist is engaged, alarm will sound to alert for hoist movement. ■■ Dual safety props add extra security when the hoist is in the up position. ■■ Seven rollers per side help guide container as it’s loaded or unloaded on hoist. Each roller is equipped with a bearing and grease fitting for easy rolling and maintenance. ■■ Two cylinders are mounted on the outside of the rails to provide added stability when loading/unloading heavy containers. “Galbreath made its mark many years ago with our popular A5 series of trailers, but there was still a need in the marketplace for a lighter-weight trailer that would handle heavy payloads with greater accessibility and maneuverability,” said John Defenbaugh, President of Wastequip’s mobile products division. “In late 2013, we introduced the M6-200 series trailer—the first in a series of heavy-duty lightweight trailers. The new M6-250 series trailer handles longer containers. “Galbreath has been manufacturing industry-leading hoists and trailers for handling roll-offs in the waste, recycling, construction, and scrap industries for more than four decades,” Defenbaugh continued. “We’re always listening to our customers, and we engineer new products that exceed the needs of the end-users who depend on our products day in and day out. This new M6-250 series trailer is a fantastic example Galbreath’s commitment to our customers.” Available options for Galbreath’s M6-250 series rolloff trailer include tarping systems, aluminum wheels, outboard-supported rollers, auto grease system, auto air inflation system, air ride suspension, tire carriers, rear wing plates, toolboxes, and more. The new Galbreath M6-250 series roll-off trailer is available through Galbreath’s extensive North American dealer network. A float that is capable of carrying more than one piece of equipment per trip would save considerable time and money. They also needed a gradual ramp to make loading the equipment safer and easier. After checking out several local dealers, Jim went to Warren Smith at Industrial Trailer Supply Company of King City, Ontario, a Rogers dealer for more than 45 years, where he found a float that fulfilled all of their requirements. Warren suggested a 55-ton Gentle Riser, the hallmark of Rogers Blacktop Series trailers. The Gentle Riser design has a 16-degree angle of SOLD Kiley Paving, Kingston, Ontario, needed a high-quality float that could stand up to frequent use hauling excavators, asphalt pavers, dozers, and heavy rollers. incline for safe, easy access from the deck to the rear frame. Optional depressed riser center beams readily accommodate the stick of an excavator while allowing a roller to climb up the wood-covered outer ramps. The Gentle Riser is available in 31.7 to 54.4-ton capacities with deck lengths ranging from 6.7 to 8.5 metres (22 to 28 feet) long, and from 2.5 to 3 metres (8.5 to 10 feet) wide. Optional features include a 500-mm (20-inch) loaded deck height for increased overhead clearance and a 914-mm (36-inch) rear ledge with a bumper stop to add extra loading space without increasing the wheelbase. Warren helped Jim fine-tune the design for a float to meet his specific needs. His recommendations included 275 70R 22.5 tires, a rear bumper stop and Rogers adjustable front folding loading ramps. “We are very satisfied,” says Steve Kiley, Professional Engineer at Kiley Paving. “We’ve had the float in frequent use for five months and it has performed to our full expectations.” ©2015 CNH America LLC.
