Every year after our show, the most-asked question is, "How can you ever top this?" Well, we always find a way and we do it each year! The 25th anniversary Mustang Memories show from what I have heard is the best one in our 38-year history! I am gonna give you the short version here, and the long version will come in our special show newsletter in October! First off, the weather was better than ever! Setup on Saturday went smoother than ever. We hit roadblocks up until the last minute testing our abilities including a whole year of planning of where and how registration would be housed and ran. That was a huge wrench in our planning but we made it work as always. Yes, there may have been a slightly longer wait to get in to the show this year, but I am positive everyone would agree it was worth the wait once inside! We once again continued our streak and broke every single record in our books! For the first time ever, we hit our dream quota of OVER 1000 cars! Yes, folks, OVER 1000 cars for a ONE-day All Ford and Mustang Show. We are only second to the Knotts Berry Farm Show as the Biggest ONE DAY All Ford and Mustang show in the country! I hope all of our members are very proud of that fact. I cannot begin to tell you how many hours our show committee puts in throughout the year to plan this amazing event. We had close to 300 workers this year -- thank you to each and every one of you! The Show would not be possible without you. We had the most cars and most spectators -- the midway and all of the aisles were busting at the seams, as for the first time ever we were forced to use overflow areas! The swap meet had more vendors than ever, merchandise more than doubled the all-time club record, etc. We had roughly 50 Ford GT's, and over 40 Bullitts in attendance. Special cars lined the midway, highlighted by the 1st invoiced Mustang! Ford and SVT engineers were walking in the crowd, and so was a member of the original design team for the Mustang Gale Halderman. Also in attendance were Mocsem's good friends, Donald Farr and Kevin Marti. And right before we started the trophy presentation, I was shocked and surprised to be awarded the very coveted Lee Iacocca Award and it was presented to me by my good friend and my Mustang idol, John Clor of Ford Racing and the Ford Performance Group and VP Ken Janus. I was beyond humbled and emotional and speechless really -- in the auto enthusiast's world that is equal to the Hall of Fame! I am still in shock, but very proud and honored! Every single person in the club has played a role in our success our board of directors is the best team ever assembled and give endless hours in making the club a huge success. But I have to take one second and thank literally my left arm and my right arm, and they are Ken Janus and Craig Zygmunt. I could NEVER do it all without these two guys -- I mean phones calls and texts to wee hours in the morning, endless planning meetings, jumping the roadblocks together and always finding new solutions and what will work the best! Thank you guys so much, as I can't do it without you! And thank you to all of our directors and members for all being part of and making us the #1 Regional Mustang Club in the land! Coming Summer 2014 Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com The Accelerator Page 3 About the Club The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan (MOCSEM) was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair with the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the 2013 GT or the 2004 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore, and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise, and / or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. The First Generation Ford Mustang – From Sketch to Production By At Ford Online In early 1961 a group of Ford Motor Company engineers, designers, product planners, marketers and executives began a series of off-site meetings at the Fairlane Inn in Dearborn, Mich. The goal was to formulate a response to the rapidly changing demographics of the American automotive market. The first wave of the post-war baby boom was coming of age and these younger drivers wanted something different from what their parents wanted. The group which became known as the “Fairlane Committee” formulated a business plan for a new sporty, stylish and affordable compact car derived from the recently launched Falcon. By the fall of 1961, designers from every Ford studio began sketching up their ideas for a car to fit this template and then rendering them in clay and fiberglass. However, until September 1962, none of the proposals were really catching on. That’s when a new sketch from Gale Halderman finally became the “IT” design. Within 2 weeks, a clay model was ready and the car was on its way to production in April 1964. It was my first car let alone my first muscle car. I had been looking for over a year for a '69 428CJ Cyclone like the one I wanted when I was 15, but my Dad wouldn't let me get it. I saw this '71 Mach and kind of liked it because it had a Shelby-like front grill and they seemed very scarce at the time. After a test drive with the 351 CID engine and 4 speed, it was a done deal. The guy I bought the car from had totaled his '72 Torino and got this car to put his built-up 351CJ into. The Mach had blown its engine and was a perfect candidate. When I bought the car the original engine was still lying in the backyard and I made sure it was part of the deal. I wanted it because it was a '71 351 with higher compression heads. When taking it apart, I found nothing was wrong with it except a snapped a pushrod and a lifter had come out of its bore. Nothing was scored and it all looked good. I oiled it well and it remained stored for 30-some years. My father and I started restoring it before putting it on the road. He is a self-taught body man and I learned tons by doing this car. We changed the color to Candy Apple Red and painted it in a friend’s garage; it turned out very well (almost every muscle car is painted red once in its lifetime). My first drive was Dec. 22, 1981, a Christmas present to myself. I ran the '72 Torino engine in the Mach those years and it performed very well. Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan • PO Box 39088, Redford, MI 48239 • www.mocsem.com Page 8 The Accelerator It was my only car for two years so; I undercoated it well and oil sprayed it yearly. Finally, I started buying winter beaters (other cars) to save the Mach and in 1996 parked it in my brother’s barn. The recent resto changed directions a few times along the way. The Mach still seemed very solid and I intended to do it as a driver. I had all that undercoating to deal with, so I totally stripped the car to blast it. When it came back, the floors were like Swiss cheese. The whole floor and trunk were replaced although the frame rails were like new, probably from all that oil. After all the metal work was done' it looked so good and I had so much money into it already, I figured I would take it to the next level. I must thank a neighbor of mine for doing the bodywork. I went back to the car's original color, Light Pewter, and went to a nutand-bolt resto”, rebuilding as many original parts as possible. The original engine was in storage until three years ago when it was re-installed in the Mach. All numbers match with original interior except headliner, carpet and front seat covers. It took us three years mostly during the winter months to complete the restoration. It was never intended to be a father-son project or should I say it wasn’t planned. My son was 13 at the time and took an interest in the project and began to help. I was more than happy to let him. I never thought about it until writing this article. Many years ago, it was a father-son project for me and my dad, and now a father-son project for my son and me. We enjoyed building it and now showing it. He enjoys going to shows with me or just going for a Sunday drive. It got him interested in the car hobby and I know he would like to resto-mod an old truck someday (Ford, of course). I’m glad to see he has other interests and doesn’t spend all his time watching TV or playing video games. He learned a lot about how things worked or why they didn’t, and how determination and attention to detail lead to the satisfaction of a finished job you can be proud of. He has driven it short distances with me on back roads. I’m sure he’ll remember the rest of his life. I still remember mine. I read about Mustang Memories in Mustang Monthly. There was a short article in the magazine describing the event and how it was the beginning of the Dream Cruise week. It sounded like a big event and we had just finished my car near the end of June and so with only about 200 miles on it, we decided to drive it over and see how it would compare to other Mustangs. It was an awesome show and we went home with a “Best in Class.” Editor's note; MOCSEM member Lang Ware met Ron at Mustang Memories, 2012. It was Ron's first car show since completing a full restoration on his '71 Mach 1. When Lang found out that Ron's son and father helped with the restoration, he thought it would make a good story for the Accelerator. After talking to Lang, Ron decided to join MOCSEM. I would like to thank Lang for initiating the discussion that led to this article and a new MOCSEM member.
