Established 1940 Lat. 42° 33.69’ N Long. 82° 40.75’ W August 2015 www.c www.c l u b i s l a n d . o r g “From the Wheelhouse” By Commodore Gary Kirrkamm I hope everyone is having a great summer and enjoying as many boating days as possible. Terrie and I thoroughly enjoyed the Clinton River Boat Club Rendezvous at the St. Clair Boat Harbor July 17-19. Members Keith and Janice Winn and Dick and Carole Bania hosted a wonderful weekend of events. It was great to see so many boats and families participate. It is a big job to organize this type of event. THANKS to all for your time and dedication. Club Island hosted the Chris Craft Commander Club on August 7-9. Member Heath Trerice and his wife, Jennifer, organized and hosted the event. There were 24 registered participants (including CRBC members) with 18 guest boats spending the weekend at the island. The catered dinner was delicious and very well presented. The evening entertainment was enjoyed by all. Throughout the weekend our guests commented on how beautiful and well-kept Club Island is. I hope we have the opportunity to host their club again. Visiting boat clubs are a great way to showcase the Island and generate new members. We have received one application from the CCCC Rendezvous and other Commander Club members are considering joining. P/C Bill Whitley Sr. has donated and installed a new weather station at Club Island, which reports weather conditions including temperature, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, dew point (the best measure of humidity), rainfall amount, and solar radiation. There is a display for the weather station visible through the glass door-wall of the Club Store. Additionally, the weather station current conditions, along with historical data, can be accessed via the internet through several avenues, Please see the home page of the Web Site for further information. THANKS to P/C Bill Whitley Sr for installing and maintaining this useful (and entertaining) system. “From the Wheelhouse” continued on page 2 August 2015 Soundings Page 2 “From the Wheelhouse” (continued) Once again, it is the time of the year to select Nominees for the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors Nominating Committee consists of: P/C Fred Gutschow as the Chairman, Director Ray Balick, Richard Eschebach, Scott Gutschow and Bob Michielutti. Thank you all for your time and efforts to guide the future of our Club. The Annual Stockholders’ Meeting is will be held at Stahl’s Automotive Museum on FRIDAY, November 6th. This is a very interesting facility with many original collectables, as well as historical cars. The meeting date was changed from the traditional Wednesday evening to Friday so that Members would have extra time to enjoy the museum after dinner and the evening presentation. THANKS to CRBC Member Ted Stahl for letting us use this venue for the Annual Meeting. There are many Entertainment events scheduled for the remainder of the season. Favorites such as the Cardboard Boat Races, Labor Day Dinner, Fleet Review, Island Skits, Ducky Race and Halloween Trick or Treat and Pot Luck Dinner are yet to be enjoyed! Flyers are posted in the Club House and appear on the Web Site and in the SOUNDINGS. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Island, Gary Grounds and Maintenance From the desk of Chris Nevison Island Store News The exterior clubhouse residing project is complete. John Space is patching and dry-walling the interior apartment where the old windows were located. Several of the toilets were removed and remounted in the clubhouse due to broken flanges. New door seals for the refrigerator were purchased. Unfortunately, after 16 years of service, the 50 horse Yamaha motor on the barge is broken beyond repair and needs to be replaced. The cost to attempt repair far exceeds its value and the repair technician indicated it would not be money well spent. So, options are being explored as to a suitable replacement engine. A larger engine would be more efficient and make steering easier. In addition, the batteries to the handicap electric golf cart need to be replaced. Moss Electric has been out and will be making additional trips out to the island to finish addressing electrical fixes. Lastly, an additional 200 lbs of grass seed was spread where the stumps were ground out to fill in the bare spots. Some items are now marked 20% off. Come to the store and check them out. There are t-shirts and shot glasses with the CRBC 75th Anniversary Logo. The “End of the Season” Sale begins on Labor Day Weekend! The store is open Sundays at 10:00AM or during Special Events. If you are not available at these times, please contact Pam Grant, Jenny Cupler, Bev Sanborn, Debbie Kersey or Roberta Reblin. August 2015 Soundings Entertainment Report From the Desk of Gene Schaden, Entertainment Chairman It’s hard to believe that we are on the home stretch of summer with “Back to School” on the minds of parents and students. But we are looking forward to the Cardboard Boat Races and Cookout on Saturday, August 22nd, and Labor Day Weekend Events which include the Tennis Mixer, Fleet Review, Skits with the theme of “Club Island’s Got Talent”, followed by the Afterglow Dessert Party. On Sunday there is an Island Breakfast , Ducky Races and the Labor Day Dinner. The Dinner menu features BBQ Ribs, Chicken, Homemade Mac and Cheese, Cornbread, Coleslaw, Corn on the Cob and Dessert. The final events of the season are Halloween Trick or Treat and a Chili Pot Luck Dinner on Septembers 12th. Refer to the flyers in the SOUNDINGS, on the website and posted in the Clubhouse for all details. Page 3 I can’t thank Bill and Donna Whitley enough. They jumped into action after the Beltz’s boat got sick and they were unable to host the Island Breakfast. Bill and Donna pulled together a team in a short time and provided an outstanding breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, and English muffins were enjoyed by all. And THANK YOU to all the unsung helpers behind the scenes that help make all of these events a success. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. I look forward to enjoying the balance of the summer with you all. See you at the Island. THANK YOU to the Three Rob’s, Rob Grant, Rob Sogge and P/C Rob Leonetti for another GREAT COOKOUT! After being postponed because of an awful weather weekend, Rob and Mary Kay Sogge hosted an Ice Cream Social followed by Family Bingo Night hosted by Butch Henderson. THANKS to Keith and Janice Winn for hosting the St. Clair Rendezvous and Golf Outing that was well attended and enjoyed by all. On Saturday, those that did not golf had the opportunity to go shopping at Marcella’s. THANK YOU to Lynn Defever who opened her home to a large group that did not golf, providing drinks and refreshments. The Euchre Card Game was hosted on Saturday evening by Tony and Laurie Buccellato. The Small Boat Rally had great participation and everyone seemed to have fun even though team Eschenbach and Kirrkamm smoked the competition. THANKS again to Tony and Laurie Buccellato for hosting another Euchre Tournament in the clubhouse. It was the MOST attended with 42 people clearly having a wonderful time. Donna and P/C Bill Whitley Sr. extend their appreciation for the great help they received in preparing and serving (and cleaning up after) the Island Breakfast on August 2nd. A BIG THANKS to Richard Reid, Sue and Jon Reesman, Reesman Amy and Cliff Cohen, Cohen Laurie and Tony Buccellato, Buccellato Terrie and Commodore Gary Kirrkamm, Kirrkamm and Annmarie and Gene Schaden. Page 4 Club Island is on the (Weather) Map!! A new weather station has been installed at Club Island— with a little help from my friend, John Space. It is located on the rooftop above the caretaker’s apartment. It will report weather conditions including temperature, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, dew point (the best measure of humidity), rainfall amount and solar radiation. Drop into these sites and check on the current weather at Club Island before you depart for the Island — or when you are daydreaming at work wishing you were there! If you have any questions, drop an email to Club.Island.Online@gmail.com and I will try to provide an answer. P/C Bill Whitley Sr. August 2015 Soundings Dear Club Island Members, For all who attended the Chris Craft Commanders Club Rendezvous weekend, thank you for making our guests feel welcome. I am happy to report that the Rendezvous showcased our Island as the incredible destination that it is, plus the warmth and friendliness of its membership. A special thank you to Commodore Gary Kirrkamm for preparing the “Welcome to Club Island” gift bag and for his efforts in shuttling the caterers and band back and forth from Minnich’s. It was a great sight to see so many vintage Chris Crafts in our harbor representing some of the earliest designs with a new material in boating called “fiberglass”. The revolutionary engineering and designs of these vessels are the early building blocks of today’s modern yachts. Having such pieces of maritime yacht history displayed in our harbor was a profound experience for me and I certainly hope you enjoyed it. The success of the Rendezvous has already led to new inquires and Membership applications. In addition, there will be an article in the Antique Boat Owner Society’s National publication bringing further exposure to the Clinton River Boat Club and Club Island. Thank you all again and enjoy the rest of the season, Heath Trerice Page 5 August 2015 Soundings Page 6 Board of Directors Meeting Wednesday, September 9th All Members are invited to attend.
