We are so glad to welcome you to our KAHDALEA and CHOSATONGA families. This is your “Counselor Packet.” Please read it carefully. It should answer many of your travel questions as well as some about camp routine. Please call us at any time with any questions. We also appreciate any feedback you have. Camp work is rewarding hard work. We believe you'll love it. THE KAHDALEA & CHOSATONGA SPIRIT We strive to provide an ideal setting for young men & women to grow to their fullest potential in the important areas of spiritual, physical, mental and social development. A strong emphasis is placed on Christian character-building in our interdenominational worship programs. Inspirational campfires, Sunday morning church services and other special times comprise the religious aspect of camp. Our greatest ministry is having a staff with a true and deep commitment to God, a desire to please Him and to grow in faith. Faith is “caught” when campers see a committed staff walking out their faith in day to day life. We invite our staff to model their faith with joy and enthusiasm. Service to others, unselfishness, courage, loyalty, integrity, respect, friendliness, honesty, and fine sportsmanship — these are values we hold high. These are goals toward which every counselor should strive. Camp is designed to provide a growth experience in a wilderness setting. The resources of nature and human personalities are used to enrich a balanced program of fun, adventure, education and inspiration. This growth involves not only skills, physical growth, mental growth and intellectual achievements, but growth also in general maturity. Emphasis is placed on the development of good attitudes, self confidence, self reliance, resourcefulness, social graces, a sense of values, moral convictions, religious faith, and a Christian way of life. C O U N S E LO R ’S MANUAL A Counselor’s Manual is included in this packet. Print it out and be sure to read it with a pen and MARK IT UP with questions! Bring it to orientation. Your marked questions are great for discussion and will be an important part of orientation. You are expected to have carefully read and KNOW the manual upon arrival. You will be tested. Pre-Orientation-IN-CAMP "US" CLINICS - Required for first time staff. Pre-Camp-Out-Sourced "THEM" Clinics - Required for first time Climb, Paddle, Cave, Bike staff We have THEM Clinics and US Clinics. They are really great and tons of fun! If you even think you might want to be on the wilderness, rock climbing, paddling, caving, mountain biking, arts & crafts, or riding staffs, you should plan to attend. If you want to CROSS-TRAIN or transfer next year, try to arrange one. The clinics are valuable for any counselor and required for first time staff. They are fun. They are also a good opportunity to make friends and learn some exciting and challenging skills as well as have a great time. The THEM clinics are an outside-of-our-program point of view and are great. The In-Camp clinics are done with in-house staff. They are like camp for staff! Taking both are important for preparation. Clinics are also important in helping us to place you. We know that a few of you are not sure which activities you will teach. We won't know exactly where some of you will end up until after clinics, sometime during orientation. If you are not sure which clinic you should take, check with us and we'll help figure it out. Page 1 THEM CLINICS are usually at another facility. BE PREPARED You must know where, when, what equipment you need to participate and you must know where you are going and have a way to get there. We have most of the gear you should need but you must arrange for that a day in advance. Please don't try to find and a good mountain bike (or canoe, climbing harness, helmet, etc) the morning you are supposed to be in your clinic. WANT TO COME EARLY? HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT. Often counselors can't wait to get here and come up well before clinics to help us get opened & explore or play. We love having you and we can provide you with a place to stay, some food and some pay. If you arrive early, plan to help us get open (via paid days that can be added to your contract) or participate in the precamp clinics. Our pre-camp period is not a very good time to come and just hang out. We also usually have a big fun school group in late MAY (all high school seniors). You may be able to work that group. It is really lots of fun and adds days to your contract! M E D I CAL I N FO R MAT I O N Each counselor is required to have a medical examination within a few weeks before arrival at camp. A form to be signed by the examining physician is included with this packet. You are responsible to be sure it is on file for this year. Camp has an infirmary usually staffed by an RN and can help you take care of minor medical needs. In light of the fact that the majority of counselors have their own health insurance, camp does not provide health insurance. Ask the office for help if you would like to visit a doctor while at camp. ARRIVAL AT CAMP Staff, who drive, arrive at the most unusual times. There is some chance that you may arrive when no one's around. We are in and out a lot just before camp. Make yourself comfortable. It is good to call first to know where to move in, especially if it will be a weekend or after 5 pm. Don't unpack all of the way. We make final cabin assignments during orientation. Don't go to the boy's camp, it'll be vacant. Come to the girl's camp. Boys will likely temporarily be on Seminole Hill. If you arrive early, here's how our kitchen and food arrangements work. Food service at camp has 3 stages. 1) Full operation during camp - All food is handled by the kitchen staff and prepared for you. 2) Open with a part-time cook during clinics - We usually have a hot meal at least once a day and self serve and self clean the rest of the time. Be sure to clean very well. 3) Pre-clinics self serve arrangement - self serve and clean behind yourself very well. T R A V E L, A R R I V A L & P I C K -U P S - BUS & AIR YOU are responsible for your travel arrangements. Need a ride? We will post staff contact info in the staff - password protected - part of the website to help you arrange things. Counselors have always been helpful to each other. You can also call us and we'll try to help you arrange something. Please let us know your approximate time of arrival. If you fly, schedule your arrival at only the Asheville Airport (AVL). Buses go to Hendersonville, NC (not Henderson, NC). Call to make arrangements for pick up at least a few days before you arrive and maybe a couple of hours before, too. PROGRAM & ACTIVITY PLACEMENTS Activities offered include backpacking, tennis, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming, caving, canoeing, nature study, arts and crafts, riflery, rock climbing, archery, drama, gymnastics, team sports, caving, guitar and more. We do all that we can to place you in your most desired activity. We certainly plan to put you in one of your top four requests. Please let us know early or in orientation if your desires change. We will try to do what we can. Finalization of your activity assignments as well as cabin assignments are usually made during Orientation. Your clinic participation matters. Your preparation is important. If you are not prepared or not prepared as you had represented yourself to be on your application, or as you told us you would be, you might need to make other arrangements for the summer. Be prepared. We are counting on you to be knowledgeable about your field. Talk to us if you have any questions or want clarification. Page 2 COUNSELOR REQUIREMENTS Counselors must be at least 18 years of age with at least a year of college unless they've satisfactorily participated in our Junior Counselor program or other unusual training. Counselors are usually hired for the entire summer. LAUNDRY Laundry service is provided by camp at no charge. Camp is not responsible for lost articles of clothing or other personal property. Counselors should mark ALL personal possessions plainly with their names. Do not bring non-essential articles or expensive clothing to camp; do bring a laundry marker (Sharpie). UNIFORMS Uniforms are worn at both camps on "Special Days." They consist of a uniform shirt and khaki shorts. The shirt is a gift from camp and it is provided for you, free. Bring 2 pair of Khaki shorts. WEATHER Nights and mornings can be chilly. Mountaintops can be downright cold with occasional but rare nights below freezing during camp! Bring winter gear. Nights are dark! You need a flashlight. We have great deals on headlights like Petzl Tikkas. We carry them in the camp store cheaper than anyone. EQUIPMENT DISCOUNTS FOR STAFF Before you buy special gear prior to camp, please know that we can buy many wilderness items wholesale and we pass most of those savings on to you. Let us know what you are interested in and we will look into it for you. From bikes & boats to life jackets, flashlights and climbing gear... we have it. PHONE NUMBERS The counselors have their phones for their personal use. Only urgent messages should come through the office. Cell phones must be kept locked and out of the cabin or locked up and unavailable to campers. Verizon has service at Chosatonga and spotty service at Kahdalea. Your cell phone is important to have charged for trips. We have a charging station in the CR (counselor room.). PAY R O L L I N F O R M AT I O N Your payroll tax forms (W-4 and NC-4) are on line to fill out and bring-better to mail or scan & email in in advance. We cannot process any pay or advances until we receive all of this information. We are not professional accountants and therefore we can't give professional advice on tax matters. However, most counselors that live out of state claim EXEMPT on the NC-4 if they can. For first time counselors, we are required to check proof of citizenship with form I-9 (Must have- A passport or: driver's license & social security card or photo school ID & social security card or other options on the I-9 form). We’ll pick it up during Orientation. Page 3 INTEGRITY We are serious about integrity, truth, honesty, commitment, courage and other virtues. That's why we have invited you to join us. We call you to be the best you can be and to always be a leader among the campers and, as importantly, your peers. Be honest and loving. Follow up on your commitments and contracts. If you have a problem with someone, discuss it with them and not to others unless seeking advice from older & wiser ones. Be direct. If you have a problem with camp, talk to the Directors. Have a good attitude and look for the good in all with whom you work. To abide by the regulations and policies of the camp as stated in the staff application and counselor manual, including the regulations regarding smoking, drinking, drunkenness, and drugs, and to adjust his/her personal habits accordingly even while off duty during the contract period. To maintain a positive Christian influence. CAMP POLICIES AND TERMS The term “counselor” means one who gives and takes advice. Our staff must have the ability to remedy any problem with a camper through counseling rather than snap punishment. At no time may a staff member strike or administer any punishment that may injure or frighten the camper. Each staff member will be given one day off and one night off each week except during the first and last week of a session. Otherwise they must remain in camp and perform their duties. Signed:____________________________________________________ I have read the camp policies outlined above and I agree to abide by them if selected as a staff member. I also understand that my not conforming to these policies may result in my immediate dismissal. TIME OFF: ADMINISTERING PUNISHMENT: Staff members cannot perform their duties while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A user of alcohol or drugs may jeopardize the life and the safety of the campers and fellow members of the staff. No members of the staff may, at any time, be under the influence of or drink alcoholic beverages on camp property or trips. Drunkenness is unacceptable whether on duty or off. Illegal drugs are not permitted. You represent camp in all situations. DRINKING AND DRUGS: Camp encourages staff to avoid the use of tobacco, both for health reasons and as an example for our campers. The use of tobacco in any form is a harmful and needless habit. Smoking or other use of tobacco must never be done in the presence or sight of campers or inside of any buildings. USE OF TOBACCO: Dress is extremely informal; however, a neat and modest appearance is an asset and is expected, especially at mealtimes and opening and closing days. We are role models for our campers. Our dress code is like that of Disneyworld, schools or other camps. Our parents do not want us to encourage their children, from our examples or words, to get body piercing, tatoos, shlongs or other extreme hair. There is no place on our staff for this fashion statement. We are expected to steer clear of controversial trendiness. PERSONAL APPEARANCE: Camp personnel are expected to be of high moral character and have a positive influence on the campers. Boys and girls of camp age are so impressionable that they readily acquire the habits of those whom they admire. There is no place on the staff for a counselor with questionable character, whose language is profane or vulgar, who exhibits any inappropriate touching of campers, or whose habits do not reflect clean living. CHARACTER: For your review and for your records, here are copies of part of your application and the text of your contract. - Ignore dates.
