Nurture Shock: New Thinking About Children
By Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman
Are you looking for some indoor fun now that fall is coming? Monday Night Live! is the answer. Come to this
evening class for learning activities to do with your child,
stories, art, and much more, all geared for children ages 5
and under. During parent time we will explore the book,
Nurture Shock.
The premise of the book is that many of modern society's
most popular strategies for raising children are in fact
backfiring because key points in the science of child development and behavior have been overlooked. In a world
of modern, involved, caring parents, why are so many kids
aggressive or have poor self control? What's the single
most important thing that helps children learn language?
Discuss with other parents topics such as the cost of sleep
deprivation, consequences for behavior, sibling relationships, why kids lie, racial friendships in a global world and
the effects of over praising. Open to parents with children
0-5 years old.

Precious Preschoolers
(3 -5 years- children must be 3 years old by Sept. 1, 2013)
Preschoolers learn when they play. That’s why art, stories,
music, games, social interaction and fun fill each session of
Precious Preschoolers. Field trips out and about in the community will enhance the learning experiences. Although the
children think they are playing, the activities are designed to
help them develop the skills they need to be ready for kindergarten—skills which involve much more than knowing
the ABCs and counting! Together in the parent education
group, we will explore the growth and development of these
special preschool years.
On Tuesdays, parents and children attend class together.
THURSDAYS ARE CHILD-ONLY DAYS. Sibling care will
be available on Tuesdays for $60 per child, if needed.

NEW! Five days/week PYP Preschool for 3 - 5
year olds at Stevenson Elementary!
Fridley is now proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) for 3 – 5
year olds. At the heart of the PYP philosophy is a
commitment to structured inquiry as an ideal vehicle for learning, especially for young children!
Through this engaging IB framework, we seek to
enable children to view their world with understanding, sensitivity, and fairness.
This pre-school program will emphasize the following things:
• Active, hands-on learning
• Conceptual learning that leads to deep
understanding along with the acquisition of
basic facts
• Meaningful, relevant learning experiences
• Cooperative learning and development of
social skills
• Individualized instruction to meet each
students’ needs, abilities, interests, and
learning styles.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop a strong sense of self, to build confidence in
mastering projects on their own, and to prepare
themselves for ongoing IB education as independent learners.

We’re Looking for the
Early Childhood Screening
‘New Kids in Town!”
Fridley’s Early Childhood program wants to support all
families with infants. If you have a new baby at your
house, and live in the Fridley School District, we would
love to deliver a free book for your new baby. We will also
add your child to our district census to make sure that you
get all appropriate mailings as your child grows and nears
school age. Call us today at 763-502-5123 to let us know
about the new member of your household.
Will your child be entering preschool or kindergarten this
fall 2013? If you answered yes, Early Childhood screening
is for your child.
What is Early Childhood Screening?
Screening is an early look at how your child is growing and
developing. Between the ages of 3 ½ and 4, screening can
detect possible health or leaning concerns, so that children
can get help before they start school. Minnesota requires
every child to participate in an Early Childhood Screening
prior to entry into kindergarten in a public school.
Fall Screening Dates:
August 21 & 22,
October 11 & December 6
To schedule an appointment, please call 763-502-5111
or email screening@fridley.k12.mn.us
