ABOUT ROBE | 1 S TAGE S TAGE Robe the Exclusive Moving Light for Carmen at Masada Robe was the exclusive moving light fixture specified by lighting designer Avi Yona Bueno (Bambi) for Carmen at the 2012 Israeli Opera Festival, staged at the foot of Masada Mountain by Israel’s Dead Sea. Over 150 Robe fixtures were again chosen for their robust performance in the tough operating environment of the desert, where dust, wind and heat all take their toll. The equipment was supplied by UK based rental company HSL, working with overall technical production suppliers The Design Group from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. It’s the third year that the Festival has taken place at Masada. The 2012 event featured six performances of Carmen conducted by maestro Daniel Oren including a public dress, plus a gala evening / rock concert – all with capacity attendances of 7,500. The 82 x Robe ColorSpot 2500E ATs and 32 x ColorSpot 1200E ATs were positioned on two large side-stage gantries and one at the back of the front-of-house control positions and used throughout the show for general stage lighting. Bambi knew the Robes would give the power and intensity needed to cover the long throws – up to 80 metres - to the stage. The show was presented on a stunning 55 metre wide ‘bare-stage’ set design created by William Orlandi. The 30 REDWash 3192s were at the back, concealed in the ‘scenic’ mountains bulldozed out of the terrain to form the upstage set elements. These distinct rectangular shaped lightsources shot shafts of light right down the performance space. Director Giancarlo del Monaco wanted a naturalistic and very organic look to the lighting to match the raw aesthetics of the environment. Using the Robes allowed Bambi to add plenty of depth and numerous subtle multi-layered textures to both day and night scenes, lit in shades of amber/colour temperature whites (day) and blues (night). Lighting looks and effects that initially might have looked simple were complex to achieve and programme without looking false, testing Bambi’s skills and experience and the precision of lighting programmer Alon Cohen. The ColorWash 2500E ATs were all fitted with custom reflectors developed by Robe at Bambi’s request to boost the light output by around 30%. Bambi – Israel’s best known performing arts lighting designer - also used special rectangular gobos in all 82 ColorSpot 2500 fixtures to frame the beams tightly and pinpoint precise areas of the stage. One reason he likes working with Robe is their willingness to listen to LDs and produce special requests. “I have a lot of time CARMEN and respect for Robe.” he says “They are really trying to understand how people can work creatively with their products”. EVEN T S EVEN T S The high profile event was staged at the Palexpo Centre in Geneva and BMW’s special launch concept was originated by Mutabor Design GmbH from Hamburg, Germany. A steel superstructure was designed in collaboration with architects Puchner & Schum from Munich, together with engineers Structure GmbH from Frankfurt. This was clad with fibre glass, creating two curved three dimensional latticed set piece walls surrounding the two Gran Coupe vehicles. A circular ceiling offered three rings of trussing for lighting positions, and there was a circular hi res LED video screen at the back of the space. The Gran Coupe promotional video was looped and shown on the screen throughout the exhibition, accompanied by a stylish lightshow that integrated the cars within the set… so choosing the right luminaire was absolutely crucial to Heilig’s lighting design. Not having used Robe products before he conducted several shootouts before making a decision on which lights to use. He sought a luminaire with a good quality of light, a flat and even beam field, smooth colour mixing and a good zoom range. It quickly became apparent that the only LED wash fixture meeting all his criteria was the Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWash and the ROBIN 600 PureWhite SW (the smart-white version of the luminaire). “It is the ideal tool,” he says, “The colour mixing is perfect and the zoom range (15 – 60 degrees) exceptional”. The order was placed with Robe by lighting rental contractors for the BMW stand, Rockservice from Salzgitter, Germany. Robe pulled out ‘all the stops’ to deliver the LEDWashes in a short lead-time, making a special order for the 42 SmartWhites as Cree normally only produces this LED multi-chip in the US. Ninety-four of the 311 units used on the installation were supplied in white housings. A hundred and twenty LEDWash 600s were ensconced in the narrow corridors behind the latticed set walls either side of the Gran Coupe arena – both on the floor and in the air and they very effectively lit a cyc wall behind, as well as the set itself. The rest of the fixtures were rigged on the three circular trusses in the ceiling. EVEN T S EVEN T S The event was attended by over 100,000 people and beamed live by national broadcaster ORF2 and 3sat to approximately 60 other countries. The Robes were used to light four key areas in Schönbrunn Palace’s extensive and very beautiful gardens - the main and ballet stages, the Gloriette structure which stands prominently on the hill above the Palace and behind where the stage was located, and the magical Neptunbrunnen Fountains. Krammer chose Robe again following the great results he achieved at the 2011 event. This year he utilised 60 ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, 30x ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes, 10 ROBIN MMX Spots, 12 ColorBeam 2500E ATs, five ColorSpot 2500E ATs, seven CitySkape Xtremes and 14 CitySource 96s. “Robe provided absolutely the right products for the project, and I found it wonderful to work with fixtures that gave me the freedom and flexibility to achieve the precise creative look and feel I wanted in the Gardens,” he declares. He combined his skills of practical, ornamental and architectural lighting for the show with spectacular effects. The LEDWash 600s were used to colour and streak the vast areas of lawn stretching out around the stage and other garden features. They also added colour and character to the large stone Gloriette structure crowning the hill, and the Neptune Fountains, bathing both of these elegant features in a new light for the evening. The CitySource 96s and CitySkape Xtremes provided general coverage for the massive Gloriette. The MMXs added intricate texturing to the Neptune Fountains together with projections from the ColorSpot 2500E ATs. With careful and tasteful lighting, these elements took on a completely unique ‘one off’ and momentary quality. Near the ballet stage, the ColorBeams were used for aerial effects shooting far into the night sky. Krammer really enjoyed using the new Robe fixtures, in particular – the LEDWash 600 and 1200s and the MMX Spots – all of which proved powerful and SCHÖNBRUNN versatile tools. ”Robe’s LEDWash series is definitely currently the best in its class,” he says.
