With the abundance of locally available waste cinders from CN rail, the idea was born to use this material to create a new type of building block which they called “cindercrete”, a mixture of cinders and concrete. The product was an instant hit with the local construction industry in Regina. Upon returning from the Navy after WWII, Bill Tell, the eldest of Adam’s two sons, began working with his grandfather Jacob. In 1954, Bill moved to Saskatoon to set up and operate the company’s second block plant. In 1958, Jerry Tell, the younger son of Adam Tell, joined Cindercrete. In 1962 Cindercrete purchased land at Victoria Avenue and Fleet Street and moved all of their Regina operations to this location. Cindercrete ventured into the ready-mix concrete business in 1965 with the purchase of Bird Building Supplies’ operation. Expansion into the landscape products market occurred in the late 1970’s to fill unused production capacity resulting from an industry decline in the masonry market. Kevin Tell, Jerry’s son, the 4th generation of the Tells, joined Cindercrete in 1984 at a time when Cindercrete was expanding into the ready-mix concrete business in Saskatoon. In 1992, the Saskatoon plant began producing dry bag shotcrete and other dry mix products. Today, Cindercrete Products continues to be a family owned, Saskatchewan based diversified manufacturer of masonry products, concrete landscape products, ready mix concrete, and bagged industrial cement products. By striking the knock-off wings with a hammer (or hammer and masonry chisel) you will now have a tapered unit to use for your curve. Always strike the wing from back to front and remember to wear protective eyewear. First Course Second Course Minimum Inside Radius - 17” or 48” Outside Diameter Building a 90° Corner Junior corner units are designed to allow construction of a true 90° corner, while retaining the textured look of the exposed face. The corner unit is designed to be used as both a right and left hand corner. When building a corner, start from the corner and work outwards. To tie the corner unit to the wall, use a concrete adhesive. Remember to alternate the corner units for each course to maintain a running bond. The side of the wall with the larger faces will exhibit a continuous surface. A semi-solid wall is necessary for curved walls. It can also be used for straight walls. 8 Retaining Wall Systems Standard Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units Per Lineal Foot: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: Tightest Circle: Inside/Outside Diameter: Max Wall Height: 4” 8” 8” 17.5 lbs./8 kg 1.5 150 2682 lbs./1192 kgs 25 Units 48”/64” 24” (6 courses) Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: Max Wall Height: 4” 8” 11 1⁄4” 25 lbs./11 kg 90 2307 lbs./1025 kgs 24” (6 courses) Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units Per Lineal Foot: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: Tightest Circle: Inside/Outside Diameter: Max Wall Height: 4” 8” 8” 17.5 lbs./8 kg 1.5 150 2682 lbs./1192 kgs 25 Units 48”/64” 24” (6 courses) Larger Corner Cap Red/Charcoal Tan/Charcoal Rocky Mountain Blend Retaining Wall Systems Smoke Charcoal 9 Stonewall Select Tan Stonewall Select Tan Stonewall Select Grey 10 Retaining Wall Systems Standard Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: 8” 12” 16” 70 lbs./31 kg 50 3557 lbs./1581 kgs Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: 8” 8” 15.5” 49 lbs./22 kg 75 3732 lbs./1659 kgs Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: 3.5” 13” 15.5” 51 lbs./23 kg 54 2811 lbs./1249 kgs Corner Cap Grey Tightest Circle: Inside/Outside Diameter: Max Wall Height: Tan 22 Units 90”/114” Suitable for walls over 36” Get all the details at: Retaining Wall Systems 11 STONEWALL PLAZA WALL A one block tumbled system capable of constructing garden walls, seats and posts. 12 Retaining Wall Systems Standard Height: Depth: Length: Weight: Units per Pallet: Pallet weight: Units per Sq. Base Preparation: Dig a shallow trench at the planned location of your wall. Make it deep enough for a layer of granular base material and the partially buried base block. 2. Base Course: Place 2” to 4” base gravel into trench. 3. Compact Base: Compact base gravel in trench. Placing 1” of sand on top of base gravel will make the 1st course levelling process easier. 16 Retaining Wall Systems 4. Level: Smooth and level. Place the 1st unit with the retaining lip down, make sure the 1st course is completely level. If your wall contains both curved and straight areas, start with the straight area. 5. Backfill: Use granular fill to fill between the units and to backfill behind the wall. Consider drain tile for better drainage. 6. Additional Courses: Again starting with the straight areas, install additional courses, pull block forward to ensure that the lip of the bottom of each block fits snugly over the block below. Center each unit on the seams of the units below. After installing each course, backfill with clean granular fill. Place the cap course, backfill with mulch to complete your wall. Determine the square footage by multiplying (length x width = square footage), add 5% for breakage and cutting. Measure lineal feet of open edges, those not up against a permanent structure such as a house, etc. This will indicate lineal footage required. Using the 3-4-5 triangle method to determine a perpendicular line, measure parallel lines from the perpendicular line to establish a boundary. Place stakes every 4 feet to 6 feet and at corners. These stakes should be 8” outside of the planned edge of the pavers. NOTE: You can check to make sure an area is square by making sure both sets of cross corners measure the exact same distance. 2. EXCAVATION • If conduit or wires are located in the area to be excavated, contact the representatives of the company concerned before the work is started. • To ensure sufficient drainage, excavate the soil to obtain a minimum incline of 2% (20mm/m - 1/4 inch per foot). • The excavation contour should extend beyond the surface to be paved by at least 300mm (12”). Ideally, this distance should be 1 to 1 1/2 times the thickness of the foundation. The stability of the project depends on this measurement, which ensures that the paving stones at the edge will be as well supported as those in the centre. 3. FOUNDATION Spread and compact the base in 100mm (4”) layers. Lightly water the base to make tamping easier. To ensure an adequate foundation, compact the base several times with a vibrating plate or a jumping jack. Once this stage is completed, you will be able to see what the final result will look like. 4. INSTALLATION BED Spread 25mm (1”) of concrete sand or screening. Bear in mind that a 25mm (1”) bed will be reduced down to 15mm (5/8”) in thickness once compacting is completed after the paving stones are installed. Level the concrete sand using two (2) 25mm (1”) diameter pipes and straight plank. Any significant variation in bed thickness may cause irregularities in the paved surface. 26 Paving Stone 5. LAYING THE PAVING STONES • Starting from a permanent edge such as a house, driveway or a piece of pave edge, arrange the paving stones according to the pattern chosen starting with a 90° angle if possible. Proceed by walking on the paving stones. Fill the holes left by the pipes. • To obtain an even distribution of color and texture, it is recommended that you choose paving stones from several pallets at a time and blend continuously into the paving stone area. • Check the alignment of the pavers after every five rows installed and adjust them, if necessary, using a screwdriver. • Install paving stones up to the last row. To avoid having to cut paving stones later, determine the position of the pave edge to finish with a complete paving stone. • If necessary, you can cut the paving stones using specialized tools such as a splitter or a concrete saw. It is recommended that you use a chalk line to mark the paving stones to be cut. If you have to use a splitter to cut the stones, be sure that the cut is at a slight angle as pavers cut this way are much easier to install. If you use a concrete saw, keep away from the paving stones already installed, since the dust and the dirt from sawing will permanently stain them. Wear safety glasses when cutting concrete products. • Once you have finished laying them, stabilize the pavers using a vibrating plate. This operation will settle the stones into the bed while levelling the surface. For best results, run the plate over the pavers two or three times in both directions. The paving stones will settle in to the concrete sand by about 10mm (3/8”). • Spread concrete sand with sandlock over the paving stones, then work it into the joints by brushing in all directions, then compact and soak the surface. • If, after a few days, some joints are not properly filled, repeat this procedure. • We suggest setting aside a number of paving stones for replacement. CIRCLE KIT INSTALLATION 1. Course 1 - Arrange 10 small wedge stones around a square stone. 2. Course 2 - Arrange 17 large wedge stones around the first course. 3. Course 3 - Arrange 24 large wedge stones around the second course. 4. Courses 4, 5, 6, 7 Alternate squares and large wedge stones, except as noted: When building an 8.4 foot circle, stone courses 4, 6 and 7 should be spaced slightly wider. However, for a tighter fit, add one large wedge stone to course 4, and one square stone to course 6, and one large wedge stone to course 7. The small wedges are used only on the first course. 5. Sandlock mixed with sand or other jointing material creates flexible bonded joints that reduces sand loss due to wind, traffic, moisture and thermal movement. It helps prevent weeds from wind blown germination and is highly effective against ants. 38 VisitLandscape www.cindercrete.com Accessories Polysweep Polymeric Sand Virtually eliminates that annoying haze often left by other products. • Highest Quality Polymers • No Cementitious Additives • Superior Strength • Prevents Sand Loss • Deters Weed Growth • Protects Pavement Integrity • Reduces Overall Maintenance 50 lb. bag 56/pallet 1 ⁄4” joint = 50 sq. ft/bag Paver Bond Adhesive Designed for landscape applications: USES: • Retaining walls and caps • Concrete paving stone • Coping systems • Masonry • Brick • Natural and manufactured stone • Slate • Hard tile pavers Adheres to other building materials such as treated lumber, aluminum, fiberglass and composite decking materials.
