Worldwide, industrial coatings accounts for around a third of the paint market. On the other hand, there are many architectural coatings manufacturers who are no doubt more familiar to the man in the street. Manufacturing industrial paints and coatings is a highly demanding, very challenging process in terms of product development. However, Teknos’ success in this is demonstrated by the fact that it is now the sixth largest manufacturer of industrial coatings in Europe. Industrial coatings form around 80% of Teknos’ total sales. Decades of experience and strong investment in product development have borne fruit. Indeed, the experience gained from industrial coatings is also utilized in architectural paints and products. Teknos’ quality and expertise can be relied on. Jari Schneider Senior Group Vice President Sivu Page 2 Mr. Andrey Klochko of Mir Krasok lectured on Teknos’ coating systems for nuclear power plants and Mir Krasok’s experiences in painting nuclear power plants in Russia, China and India. He also provided information on Mir Krasok’s cooperation with various atomic and certification institutes in Russia. BulAtom Seminar in Bulgaria In cooperation with its Russian partner Mir Krasok, Teknos participated in the Bulgarian Atomic Forum seminar at the end of May in Varna, Bulgaria. In all, around 300 people participated in the BulAtom seminar. Their interest was particularly raised by the third-generation nuclear power plant paints presented. Teknos acquainted the participants with nuclear power plant paints that meet the latest requirements for NPP paints and which have been used at the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant in Finland. For its part, Mir Krasok shared its experiences of painting nuclear power plants in Russia, China and India. Teknos’ paints for nuclear power plants are extra high grade and suitable for other demanding metal and concrete locations too. Mikko Nihtilä Technical Manager Sivu Page 3 A Fishing Story Nils Master is a well-known trademark amongst fishing enthusiasts all over the world. However, few are aware that a Finnish company, known as Finlandia Uistin Oy, is behind Nils Master’s product development. Finlandia Uistin Oy originates from the same small village as another world-famous fishing tackle manufacturer, Rapala. Besides their long history, these companies also have years of experience in common, in using Teknos’ glossy and durable stowing enamel. Sivu Page 4 Krokodil Spoon, Bete Lotto and Turku Spoon are famous trademarks, manufactured by Finlandia Uistin Oy. Kalevi and Hannu Kangas, the founders of Finlandia Uistin Oy. Rapala and Finlandia Uistin have been designing and manufacturing lures in the same village for several decades. Rapala’s Blue Fox spinners are well-known to fishing enthusiasts. Finlandia Uistin Oy, established in 1963 by two brothers Hannu and Kalevi Kangas, still operates as a family business in Kalkkinen, Finland. It exports its products to over 30 countries. – I had not even turned 21 when my brother and I were reflecting on our future and thinking that we had to cook something up, Kalevi reminisces. – We received an inquiry from the USA on the manufacture of wobblers. The importer said that it would be worth our while to create our own skeleton model. It is from here that the development of the Nils Master collection began. We confined ourselves to giving competitors’ catalogues a quick glance only, since we had decided that under no circumstances would we make anything similar, states Kalevi, who is in charge of the company’s R&D. and finished with Teknos TEKNOTHERM 1521 stowing enamel that endures impacts, water and washing. – Enamelling is a very important phase of production. The enamel must be high quality and clear so that the colors show and are preserved. Good surface adhesion is also important, so that the water won’t force its way in and rust the lure, Kalevi emphasizes. The materials of the lures are German silver, brass or copper. Before priming, the billets, which are cut from a big plate, are cloth polished and carefully washed. On the front of the lure, the paintwork is tinted using different color pastes, while its background is left enamel. The finishing coat is provided by dip enameling, after which the lure is stowed at +100°C, because copper tarnishes at higher temperatures. It all started with a papered wooden wobbler called the Finlandia. The Nils Master trademark was created in 1966, when Finlandia Uistin was among the first manufactures of colored fishing lures in Finland. Later, in 1978, the product range was completed with the Bete trademark developed by a Swede called Tage Tyskling. Today, the most famous Bete trademarks are Krokodil Spoon, Bete Lotto and Turku Spoon. But then again, Hannu recalls that Kalevi entered business much earlier. – In 1946, they were making a movie called “Kanavan laidalla” (By the Canal). Six-year old Kalevi capitalized on the opportunity to sell the actresses two kittens that he had baptized in a skimmed milk tub, Hannu explains. From this, it is evident that the Kangas Brothers’ entrepreneurship has a long tradition. Beneficial Leisure Time There is an old saying, “A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work”, and during these economically unstable times this may even be true. Fortunately, the recession has not, at least yet, had an influence on demand for fishing tackle. Fishing is a hobby which combines fun and benefits. In both good times and bad, a true fisherman will not compromise on the quality of his fishing gear. – A fisherman who has just caught a fish with a lure knows exactly with what, and why, the fish bit. But if the lure falls to bits just when the fish is being hauled in, that’s a bummer. That is why it is worth investing in quality, Kalevi explains. Important Working Phase Bete lures are of good quality, being primed Hannu and Kalevi state that fish find the color black appealing, but this might not lure fishermen. – Every year, a couple of new colors enter the market, mainly at the request of retailers. It is worthwhile changing the lure’s color, because the appetite and irritation level of fish keep changing with the season and time of day. Fisherman of the Year 2009 Award Every year, SKES Ry, the Finnish promotional association for fishing tourism, pays tribute to promoters of fishing tourism. Industrial Counselor Ensio Rapala was selected Fisherman of the Year 2005. In 2009, the title was awarded to Finlandia Uistin Oy’s Kalevi Kangas. Peace and Harmony with Rapala Finlandia Uistin Oy and Rapala VMC Oyj have been designing and manufacturing lures and fishing tackle in the same village for several decades. Mutual respect reigns between these two companies. They appreciate each other’s products and know-how. – We go back a long way with the founders of Rapala and there is no competition whatsoever between us. You could say that we complement each other, says Hannu Kangas, Managing Director of Finlandia Uistin Oy. At Rapala they agree. Since their tackle is still in demand, Rapala has hired 10 new employees during the year. Although part of production has been moved abroad, the main design operation remains in Finland. Rapala’s world-familiar trademarks are Vibrax, Blue Fox and Storm. Sivu Page 4 6 A Renewed VOC and Consumption Calculator on Teknos’ Website On Teknos’ website, there is a useful tool for planning paintwork for the metal and plastic industry. In addition to calculating volatile organic compound emissions, consumption estimations for single products or Teknos’ Coating Systems can be calculated with the renewed VOC calculator. This calculator is easy to use and you can add your own paints to it. The calculator is available in English, Swedish and Finnish. The VOC calculator is based on Council Directive 1999/13/EC. Since there are small color-specific divergences in the product calculation estimations, different color shades are given an average value. Enable Macros before Implementation of the Calculator The VOC calculator opens as an MS Excel table and can be downloaded onto your computer. To ensure that the program runs properly, you must first define the macro security settings. MS Excel 97-2003 When using MS Excel 97-2003, the security level must be set to no more than medium level. You can check your security level on Tools – Macro – Security. The macro security settings can also be found by clicking the Microsoft Office Button and Excel Options – Trust Center – Trust Center Settings – Macro Settings.
