ISBN 9781870516549
Beautifully illustrated board books showing two boys and two
girls in various settings familiar to the young child. Written in a
gently rhythmic style, the series introduces early vocabulary. For
ALL children in any environment – nursery school, playgroup and
home. These books feature children of dual heritage.
This series of small format board books are part of an ongoing Tamarind
series, dealing with simple concepts such as up, down, under, around etc,
and typical of the stock-in-trade of most publishers for the very young.
What distinguishes these and makes them welcome is the fact that they are
thoroughly multicultural and are filling a clear gap in the market.

DAWNE ALLETTE
“I was not born into money or status. I was born to a teenage
mom in Hawaii, and my dad left us when I was two. But
my family gave me love, they gave me education, and most
of all they gave me hope . . .”
Punctuated with Obama’s own words, this biography traces the
people, places and experiences that made Barack Obama the
powerful man he is today. His story takes us from Hawaii to
Indonesia, to Chicago and to Kenya. Obama’s story of hope and
determination culminates with an account of his historic
inauguration as the 44th President of the USA and his first 100
days in office.

Princess Katrina and the Hair Charmer
The Dragon Kite
CHRISTINA SHINGLER
Illustrated by Derek Brazell
A story for girls with impossible curls. Princess Katrina has never
seen any princesses with curls like hers. She’s worried because
her crown keeps sliding off her head… Then, her best friend, the
parrot Fussfeathers, calls Zuri, the Hair Charmer. Zuri knows all
about hair like Katrina’s and shows her how to make the most of
her beautiful hair.
This picture book is ideal for the multi-cultural shelf in the school library
and could be used to lead discussion about difference and the range of
individual talent in every classroom. The story is vividly illustrated.
Katrina’s face is particularly expressive. Visual imagery is woven into the
text as skilfully as Zuri weaves the beads, shells and ribbons into
Katrina’s hair.

HISTORY
VERNA WILKINS AND MICHAEL LA ROSE
Illustrated by Lynne Willey
The steel pan is the only musical instrument invented in the 20th
century. This book traces its rich and interesting development from
humble beginnings in Trinidad in the Caribbean in the 1940’s to the
present. Today, steel bands are popular throughout the Caribbean,
Europe, Asia and the Americas.
The Caribbean people played drums long before Columbus and the
Spanish arrived. When Africans were brought to the islands to work
on plantations, they also brought their knowledge of drums. The
plantation owners, however, feared the powerful sound of the drums
in the hands of the workers, and banned them. Undeterred, the
workers used bamboo to beat out a rhythm when they needed musical
entertainment. Eventually, they discovered the versatile sounds they
could get from metal objects, including tins. ‘Pounding the pan’
developed and the steel pan with various notes came into being.
Includes a CD of Sterling’s Angels (children’s steel band led by Pan
Maestro Sterling Betancourt) playing a range of music.
