Summer 2015 - Silver Lake Mennonite Camp
Summer 2015 Silver Lake Mennonite Camp YOUR SUMMER ADVENTURE STARTS HERE! Letter to Parents Dear Parents and Guardians, Thank you for considering Silver Lake as an option for your child(ren) this summer. In an era of specialty camps (science, engineering, gymnastics, hockey etc.) we’re proud to offer a traditional summer camp experience where kids can simply be outdoors enjoying a variety of activities. Since 1961, Silver Lake has been providing powerful and meaningful summer camp experiences for children ages 6-16 and we hope you’ll share in that experience this summer! As parents, we understand the level of trust and knowledge you need when sending your child(ren) off to camp. Here’s some information that might help you make your decision (and rest easier at night!). n n n n STAFF: All of our staff have graduated from our two year leadership program, CILTs. In addition, many of them grew up attending camp at Silver Lake and know first-hand the positive impact they can have on the lives of campers. Our on-site, camper to staff ratio is 2:1, all staff have Standard First Aid with CPR and nearly half are lifeguards (all swimming and waterfront activities are supervised by lifeguards). FACILITIES: Over the past 5 years, we have invested over one million dollars in our facilities and property including a new dining hall, renovated commercial kitchen, five new camper cabins, new washrooms and plenty of program equipment from a new archery range and an expanded low ropes course to a water trampoline and sailboats. FOOD: Quality, homemade food is culturally significant to Mennonites, and campers will experience that first hand while at camp! Freshly baked bread, homemade mac and cheese, soups and sauces from scratch and the list goes on. PROGRAM: We’re constantly visiting other camps, outdoor education centers, and taking in conferences all in an effort to provide exceptional programming. At Silver Lake we dedicate each week at camp to a different age range to ensure your camper is there with others of similar age. That also allows us to tailor the programming to their specific age range. We hope this information helps you make your decision. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to call or email. See you at camp soon! e i n a l e M Melanie Cameron Summer Camp Director Dave David Erb Executive Director CAMPERS LOOK FORWARD TO: Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, tether-ball, gaga-ball, volleyball, arts & crafts, nature, Quest (exploring faith), polar bear dip, camp-wide games, low ropes adventure course, campfire, music & singing, quiet time for reading and writing. EXPLORING FAITH The QUEST & Missions programs are the foundation of our Christian camping experience. Through Mennonite-Anabaptist values and beliefs our Quest program explores the foundations of faith including Bible stories and teachings, all conducted in a supportive environment. In partnership with Mennonite Central Committee Ontario (MCCO), the Missions program offers campers a chance to actively participate in missional service projects such as building health and/or school kits, knotting comforters and other MCCO mission oriented initiatives. A PLACE FOR EVERYONE The Inclusion Program facilitates the inclusion of children with special needs into the regular program with campers their own age. This gives an opportunity for those requiring more attention and care to participate and allows for learning and growth within the entire camp community. Please note our facilities are not wheelchair accessible. Silver Lake Mennonite Camp has a Campership Fund that provides financial assistance for children who would otherwise be unable to attend camp because of financial constraints. There is an application / dispersal process. Please contact the camp office for further details. Silver Lake strives to be a place of inclusion for everyone, regardless of race, religion, social or economic status, gender and sexual orientation. 2015 Summer Schedule Dates Age Date of Birth Paid in Full Prior to March 31 Mini Camp June 28-June 30 6-10 2009-2005 $200.00 $225.00 Camp 1 June 30 - July 4 6-10 2009-2005 $400.00 $425.00 MC & Camp 1 Together June 28 - July 4 6-10 2009-2005 $550.00 $575.00 YX - Hike/Canoe June 30 - July 5 9-14 2006-2001 $550.00 $575.00 Camp 2 July 5 - July 11 9-14 2006-2001 $550.00 $575.00 A & A Camp July 12 - July 25 9-14 2006-2001 $980.00 $1,050.00 July 28 - August 2 13-16 2002-1999 $550.00 $575.00 Teen Camp August 2 - August 8 13-16 2002-1999 $550.00 $575.00 Camp 5 August 9 - August 15 7-12 2008-2003 $550.00 $575.00 Skillz Camp August 16 - August 22 9-14 2006-2001 $550.00 $575.00 July 12 - July 18 12-15 2005-2002 $650.00 $675.00 August 9 - August 22 13-16 2002-1999 $1,050.00 $1,100.00 Camp Session TX - Hike/Canoe Wilderness Hike Adventure Wilderness Canoe Adventure CILT 1A Paid in Full After March 31 July 12 - July 25 Must be 15 as of January 1, 2015 $1,050.00 $1,100.00 August 9 - August 22 Must be 15 as of January 1, 2015 $1,050.00 $1,100.00 Family Camp - Private Cabin August 28-30 All ages! $700.00 Per family Famiyl Camp - Shared Cabin August 28-30 All ages! $375.00 Per family Family Camp - Tenting August 28-30 All ages! $325.00 Per family March Break Getaway March 16-20 395 N/A CILT 1B 8-12 2007-2003 Registration Information READY TO REGISTER? Summer Camps MINI CAMP & CAMP 1 (Age 6-10) These sessions offer the perfect opportunity for children to experience camp life! Mini Camp is three days and two nights while Camp 1 is five days and four nights. During these camps, we increase our counsellor to camper ratio to ensure your child receives all of the attention needed to make their first camp experience amazing! We even plan a special “homesick proof” menu and keep a special eye out for picky eaters – we’ll make sure they find something good to eat. As with all of our camps we make every effort to accommodate all bunk- mate requests, so bring along a friend and we’ll make sure they’re together in the same cabin. Tip to Parents: For a first time camp experience, we recommend Mini Camp on its own, and for the second year Camp 1 is a good bet. However, if your camper is super keen you can register them for both Mini Camp and Camp 1 which run seamlessly into each other. CAMP 2 (Age 9 -14), CAMP 5 (Age 7-12) and SKILLS CAMP (age 9-14) For those with the busy summer schedule where one week is the only option, these sessions allow campers to participate in all of the activities camp has to offer including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, crafts, ropes course, nature, archery, quest, field games and worship/campfire. As a cabin, campers determine what each day will look like by picking their activities together. If your camper is looking for a balance of personal choice and group choice, you might want to consider Skillz Camp or Arts & Adventure Camp (see next page). Skillz Camp is very similar to Camp 2 and Camp 5 but campers can choose one specialty session to join, in addition to cabin activities. Tip to Parents: Check out Young Explorer Hike (3 days and 2 nights camping and exploring at Cypress Lake at Bruce Peninsula National Park) or Canoe Trip (3 days and 2 nights paddling along the Saugeen River) as a way to extend the Camp 2 experience from 7 to 12 days! ARTS & ADVENTURE CAMP (Age 9-14) This camp is “EPIC” – that’s what campers say anyways! New this year, we have extended this camp from 11 days to two full weeks, starting on Sunday and finishing on the Saturday. In addition to experiencing all of the regular camp activities with their cabin mates, these campers are treated to four elective specialty sessions which they select individually. Sessions are led by an assortment of guests some of which are featured on the next page. 2015 sessions include; Culinary Arts, Photography, Videography, Ropes Course, Survival, D-I-Y, Earth Arts, Drum-making, Soccer, Dance, Violin, Voice (singing), Stain-glass, Mountain Biking, Beading, Quilting, Woodworking, Nature Crafts, Open Air Painting, Construction Project, Yoga, Kayaking and Sailing – what a list! Prior to arriving at camp, campers will be asked to select 4 specialty sessions which they’ll spend six hours (1.5 hrs. per day for four days) participating in. We intentionally limited the number of campers for this camp to 65 to ensure small group sizes and to provide accommodation for guest leading sessions. Tip to Parents: Please note, early registration for Arts & Adventure Camp is recommended due to the anticipated high demand. Recording 101 – Campers will write and record music using state of the art instruments and recording equipment while picking up new skills from our guest teachers. Guest Leaders Mike Erb (Sight & Sound Studio, New Hamburg) and Jeff Cowell (Locust Street Studio, Kitchener) are professional musicians and Silver Lake alumni. Forest Living – This session will introduce the elements of living the good life outdoors: fire, water, food, and shelter. Guest Leader Dylan Siebert is a former Silver Lake counsellor and nature leader. He lives in downtown Kitchener and works with KW Forest School and Transition KW. Videography – Campers will take part in planning and filming a video about life at camp! Guest Leader Chris Steingart is a marketing specialist with QT web designs. Plein Air Acrylic Painting – En plein air translated from French simply means “in open air”, and that’s just where campers will be spending time painting landscapes around the beatific picturesque scenery of camp! We’ll be using acrylic paints and learning various landscape painting techniques. Guest Leader Diana Erb is an artist and art educator living in New Hamburg, Ontario where she owns and operates Sight & Sound Studio. Culinary Arts – Back by popular demand, campers will learn practical hands-on cooking skills from making homemade pasta and pastries to cooking in our wood-fired oven. Guest Leader John Bergen is owner and operator of City Cafe Bakeries (Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge). TEEN CAMP (Age 13-16) This camp is a must for any Teen and will undoubtedly be the highlight of their summer! The programming is tailored to Teens and has lots of creative activities such as; concerts, talent shows, movie nights, day hikes, ultimate Frisbee, survival games, woodworking, mountain biking, beach party, late night star gazing to name a few. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of time for the traditional camp activities as well! This year we have Nii Addico from Creation Africa coming to share his passion of hand-drumming. Nii will spend instructional time with each cabin and then lead a massive drum circle during campfire. Tip to Parents: Register for Teen X Hike (three days and two nights on the Bruce Trail in Bruce Peninsula National Park) or Canoe Trip (three days and two nights on lakes in Algonquin Provincial Park)) as a way to extend the Teen Camp experience from 7 to 12 days! CILTs (CAmPers In LeAdershIP TrAInIng) (Age 15-17) CILTs is a two year leadership program designed to equip and train campers to be effective leaders at camp and beyond. CILT 1 is for 15 year olds (as of January 1, 2015) who are interested in learning valuable leadership skills that can be used in all aspects of their life. Participants are encouraged to develop a sense of self as they grow in understanding of leadership styles, group dynamics and communication skills. Openended spiritual discussion will provide opportunities for spiritual growth. Participants will get a chance to build hard skills as they lead their own 3 day backpacking trip in Bruce Peninsula National Park. Space is limited to 12 participants per session (24 participants in total). Please complete the CILT 1 application form found on our website – www.slmc.ca/camp before march 14, 2015. We just wanted to say that we thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for such wonderful camp experiences over the years for all of our three children. As we have said in the past, SLMC is by far the best investment we have made for our childrens’ future‚ lifelong memories, friendships and personal growth experiences. JOEL MASEWICH Thanks again to you and all the staff (especially Barrett, Jake and Mary) for making Cam’s first experience at Silver Lake so positive and memorable. He had a great time and in fact, was crying at supper time tonight because he missed camp so much! (We had to set up his sleeping bag on his bed and I had to read him his bedtime stories in the dark with my headlamp…because “that’s what the counsellors do!”) JEN McTAVISH A HUGE thanks to the staff for taking such good care of our kids! They had a wonderful time, we’ve been hearing stories all day! We deeply appreciate the extra time the counselors took to welcome Sam and help him “acclimatize” to camp. Camp is such an amazing place for personal growth, and he really had that opportunity this week! So, thank-you for providing that opportunity! Camp is a magical place! MICHELLE MARTIN Just a short note to say “thank you” for making Rachel’s first camping experience such an amazingly unforgettable one. She had a great time and talked about it all weekend. We would like to make special mention of Sarah, the counsellor for Balsam. She is an amazing individual who obviously cares about her campers.
