At exactly 11am on Saturday 7th June the heavens opened 3
and the rain poured down. The Village Event was open
and a handful of villagers braved the elements.
Fortunately it was only a shower, well quite a few showers
actually, and it was sunny later on in the a ernoon. I was
on the NHWatch stall for quite a lot of the me and there seemed to be quite a
few visitors to the event. The Zumba and egg throwing was good, although I
didn’t join in with either; I had a bad leg(!?) But I did win a great raffle prize.
There was a very poor response to the ‘banner compe on’ in fact I don’t think
anyone actually entered. Something needs to be changed to make this Event a
place that people want to go to and enjoy so the commi ee are appealing for
ideas and help. Turn to page 21 and then email the commi ee and tell them
your ideas and even be er volunteer to help.
The Methodist Church as part of their Jubilee year are holding a Talent of
Tollerton weekend in September. They want you to take along your arts and
cra s for all to see. More informa on on page 7.
There is a Strawberry Tea in the Methodist Church hall on Thursday 17th July
raising funds for cancer chari es, please go along and support this for just a £1.
Do you like JAZZ?—The Methodist Church are holding a Jazz evening as part of
their Jubilee celebra ons on 5th July but unfortunately due to lack of support
the Cancer Research UK Jazz evening has been cancelled.
My appeal for a deputy editor is s ll on going. Perhaps a young person wan ng
to learn about desktop publishing would be willing to have a go, maybe to
learn a new skill for the Duke of Edinburgh.
The next issue is a joint edi on for August and September so please remember
to give me your dates and copy to cover both issues.

‘GAVRILO PRINCIP – was he a terrorist
or a hero?’ It was a warm summer`s
evening, last month. I was drinking with
a group of friends. One asked me that
ques on. He`d picked a good place to
ask it. We were in the city of Tuzla in
Bosnia. Gavrilo Princip and his associates
passed through it a hundred years ago,
on their way to Sarajevo. Austrian
soldiers had check points everywhere.
So the would be assassins carried their
pistols and ammuni on concealed in a
box of sugar. Was Princip a terrorist or a
hero? It`s s ll a sensi ve ques on in
Bosnia. (The man who asked the queson is Bosnian.)
I answered him,
evasively perhaps: ‘It depends on your
point of view’.
Two things seem pre y clear though.
The first is that Princip intended and
commi ed murder. That`s wrong anywhere, any me. Yes? Well is it?
Remember the German plot to kill Hitler
supported by – among others – the
famous, saintly and influen al Chris an
Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer?
The second thing is certainly clear. The
consequences of Princip`s ac on, the
assassina on of Crown Prince Ferdinand
and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28th a
hundred years ago, were momentous.
Princip can`t be blamed for that, for the
nderbox situa on in Bosnia, mainly
populated then by Serbs who deeply
resented the way Austria Hungary had
effec vely annexed their country, and
imposed military occupa on. Nor can he
be blamed for the way, during July 1914,
poli cians and diplomats walked Europe
over the cliff into ‘the war to end all
wars’. (Yes, the story quickly became
complicated, and historians are s ll
trawling through it, deba ng it.)
We shall all be remembering, and some

AIR HOSTESS PETANQUE CLUB
Hopefully the weather is now fine enough to allow us to enjoy the regular
Monday night games at the Air Hostess. Monday is very much a ‘fun-night’
where team players have the chance to try out new techniques without the
pressure of a match score and generally have a relaxed game. Some of those
who come along are team players but there are also others who just come
along occasionally for an enjoyable game with individuals (male and female)
who are also there to enjoy a night out. Come along and try it out - there are
plenty of spare boules (which are available at all mes from behind the bar)
and players will be only too willing to help and explain the game. We also now
have a DVD on basic Petanque which has been produced by the Petanque Associa on and this is available for loan.

of us deba ng, the Great War which
caused so much suffering, provided
opportunity for so much heroism, and
changed the face of Europe. And what
conclusion will we come to? Perhaps this,
for one; that war (which may some me
be unavoidable) tends to be the most
costly and least effec ve way of resolving
interna onal conflict.
Tuzla, along with many other places in
Bosnia, is currently suffering a plague of
mosquitoes (nasty big ones), part of the
legacy of recent floods. There`s talk of
the government sending planes to spray
the towns to get rid of them. Wouldn`t it
be good if there were a way of spraying
the world with some wonderful spirit
which would destroy the plague of
violence wherever it occurs – in Iraq,
Syria, Afghanistan, down our street? The
planes haven`t arrived over Tuzla yet.
Perhaps they never will. And perhaps we
shall always have to live with violence in
our world, despite ‘the war to end all
wars’. Perhaps. Perhaps not. Is there a
way out?
Despite a lot of evidence to the contrary,
I believe there is. Paradoxically the key to
the door of las ng peace lies in a story of
extreme violence, done long ago to an
innocent man – a crucifixion. This man
died saying ‘Father forgive....’. Thus he
opened the door to reconcilia on. And
the resurrec on of Jesus is a sign that
God does forgive, and affirms forgiveness
and reconcilia on as the way to break
the cycle of violence.
Why was I in Tuzla? Answer is that I was
there with two of the staff of Coventry
Cathedral, well known since the Second
World War for its work in promo ng
reconcilia on in troubled places. The
Cathedral is remembering the Great War
over the next four years by promo ng
‘peace studies’ in schools in Bosnia,
Serbia, our country and others. I watched
the Cathedral people as they worked
through a ‘peace game’ with Bosnian
children, children of parents who both
took part in and suffered from the war in
Bosnia 20 years ago. My hopes rose.
They`re s ll rising.

St. Peter’s Update June
The Grange Day Nursery
In spite of the weather, which a er a slow and rainy start picked up to be
a really warm a ernoon, we all enjoyed the Village Event. We had lots of
visitors to the marquee whilst it was wet but not so many once it was
brighter--which is just as it should be!!!! On Sunday the children enjoyed
cra ac vi es and then joined the adults in solving the treasure hunt
clues.
In September we will be saying goodbye to Rev. Mike who is re ring to
Beeston. He has been with us for nearly five years though it doesn't seem
that long. We shall be sorry to see him go but wish him well in his
re rement. We shall then enter an interregnum phase whilst we wait for the
appointment of a new priest. There will be visi ng preachers during this
me so do come and meet some of the clergy from the surrounding area.
Keep checking the no ce board outside church to find out what's happening.

27th May: Criminal damage to gates on industrial area on Tollerton Lane.
PCSO Luke Charlton has been moved to work at West Bridgford on a project for
ini ally a 1 year period. He will start on 17/06/2014.
I wish him well with that move.
Luke has been replaced by PCSO Alex MITCHELL. Alex has been a PCSO for 18
months working out of West Bridgford Police sta on.
I welcome Alex to the team working with the Keyworth and East Leake beat

I struggled this month to think of an aspect of Tollerton life or a local landmark in the village that has not already featured on the cover of a previous
newsle er. My mind dwelt on July and things that might have some
associa on with the summer months – strawberry teas, garden fetes,
summer holidays, Wimbledon, the smell of barbecued food came to mind
readily but nothing that stands out in terms of ac vity unique to Tollerton.
Clearly we have had the Village Event in June, no strawberry farms here
(though my small strawberry patch con nues to flourish despite the plants
being quite aged now) but l guess one of the things many of us share in the
summer months is the opportunity it provides to get outdoors more.
I have no ced that at this me of year there is a marked increase in the
number of avid cyclists in and around the village. I do not necessarily mean
the casual cyclist or those who use this mode of transport regularly but those
on ‘serious’ racing bikes, dressed in their lycra kit and high viz tabards. I guess
many are currently prac sing for one of the annual cycling events that follow
a route through the edge of Tollerton and around numerous other
No nghamshire villages. It is great to see them but just a tad irrita ng when
they cycle in a group two and three abreast on some of our narrow, busy
roads. Nevertheless my hat goes off to them as it is something l could never
aspire to. My cycling was limited to riding my gran’s old bicycle when l visited
her in rural Somerset as a young person since my parents would not allow me
to have my own bicycle at home in No ngham. My grandmother had bought
the bicycle long ago from the re red village police officer and it truly was an
an que with no working brakes and no gears! You had to slide your foot
along the surface of the road in order to slow down and constantly had to
avoid any major declines for fear of completely losing control and ending up
in a ditch – clearly illegal but no one seemed to no ce in those days.
I suppose this year some of us will remember this summer for the World Cup
in Brazil though having recently watched the first match between England and
Italy l am not sure England will progress through to the next round. Perhaps l
should have more faith in our na onal team? There is also of course the
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July/August and I guess the opening
event will be quite a spectacle. So all in all plenty to keep those sporty
residents happy this summer but hoping whatever you do it will be a good
summer for you and that the sun will shine.

Report from mee ng held on 2nd June 2014
Councillor Debbie Mason informed us of road closures in Cotgrave
and reminded us that if there are strong feelings against a planning
applica on she can insist on it being heard by councillors instead of
being dealt with by planning officers.
She informed us that Police officers were checking speeding cars on
Tollerton Lane for a period one morning recently and issued speeding ckets to approx. 20 cars for exceeding the limit.
The planning hearing is likely to consider Tollerton’s views on the
10th July.
Small polythene bags (known as deal bags) have been found on the
open space indica ng that people are smoking herbal cannabis on
the open space
The council also discussed the allotments, planning applica ons,
the Village Event and the rates charged for hiring the Parish
Rooms. (The new charges to be announced a er a period of
consulta on.)
The Parish Council meets at 7pm on the first Monday of each
month (unless it is a Bank Holiday) in the Parish Rooms
on Burnside Grove, Tollerton.

No nghamshire Begin Season Well
Now that summer is dawning upon us, the cricket season has well
and truly begun in style for No nghamshire’s County side.
No ngham has performed extremely well in recent years, but
they must not be complacent in the first division of the LV County
Championship, as there are many world-class cricketers
compe ng against No s this year.
Despite there being tough compe on this season, No nghamshire seemed to have started the current season in a similar way
to how they ended their previous season. No nghamshire are
currently in second place in the first er of the County Championship leagues, winning 3 games from 9. This may not sound too
successful, but the side, captained by English wicket-keeper Chris
Read, have remarkably drawn 4 matches this season.
There have been several posi ves for No nghamshire so far,
including a large win over Northamptonshire a few weeks ago.
The No s side racked up a first innings score of 409-8, with Riki
Wessels scoring 158 runs. Wessels, who has been plying his trade
as a specialist batsman at Trent Bridge since 2011, hit fourteen 4s
and eight 6s during the superb display of ba ng against a
lacklustre Northamptonshire team. A er comple ng two innings,
Northamptonshire s ll failed to reach the 409-8 set by Wessels
and co.
Let’s hope there is more success for No nghamshire in the
upcoming fixtures.

EVAN - GUIDE DOG PUPPY
Dear All
I cannot believe a whole year has passed and Evan the Guide Dog
Puppy has now gone into training at Atherton in Manchester. He really
gave me a few challenges especially his fear of the main road but we
got there in the end!
We took him up to Atherton ourselves so that we could have a tour of
the training centre and watch the trainers there working with the
dogs. It really is a marvellous thing how they get the dogs to do what
they do when they are fully trained. Evan will have up to 16 weeks
there and we will be kept in touch as to how he is progressing.
As some of you already know we have taken in a 6 year old re red
guide dog called Jasper
so I really do intend to
have a break from the
puppies for the me
being so we can just
enjoy having a "pet"
dog!!

NEWS FROM SOUTH WOLDS ACADEMY
Website Designers of the Future
Employers o en complain that young people don’t have any real world
experience, so South Wolds Academy Principal Andrew George was delighted
when Keyworth Business Group asked the school to help develop a website for
the local community. The new website, due to be launched at the end of June,
aims to help people in Keyworth and surrounding villages find local suppliers,
shops and restaurants.

OLLERTON VILLAGE HISTORY GROUP
We are a small group of enthusias c local residents keen to preserve our
village’s history and heritage.
This is not a historical society as some villages have created but a working
group whose purpose is to:
Three students, Rowan Rushton aged 14, Jake Hird and Will Shaw, both 15,
worked on the website a er school, with help from Ma Butler, ICT Technician
at South Wolds Academy. Graham Blakely and Paul Burrows from the Keyworth
Business Group gave the students a brief, and then held regular mee ngs with
them so that the students could report on progress and receive feedback. The

The 2014 Village Event (VE) was hugely enjoyable, but we realise that for
2015 things need to change.
Events and ac vi es that used to a ract a lot of entries and support, such
as the football tournament and annual compe on, receive fewer and
fewer entries each year and the team who make the event happen need
more help and ideas.
The Village Event has always had free entry, but this means that the
£1500 needed to stage the VE each year has to be raised through the
raffle, stall fees and profits from the sale of burgers and bhajis. Fewer
people coming to the event, buying raffle ckets and wan ng stalls etc.
means that it really is in jeopardy.
The VE team need to know what you want your Village Event to be like in
2015:





Would you like a more tradi onal village fete?
What sort of compe ons would you take part in?
If you have children, what would they really love to see on the day?
Would you prefer it to be later in the summer?
Will you be part of the team that makes it happen?
So what do we need you to do next?
If you have an idea about how you want the Village Event to be, or

But, we won’t be able to make any of these ideas a reality without some
extra help, so we also need volunteers to be part of the VE team. It is not
about si ng in endless mee ngs, it is about coming up with some
cracking ideas and then agreeing to be responsible for one small element

KATE’S CUTTINGS
Have you heard of the ‘Chelsea chop’? If not, it’s nothing to do with
what you may be having for dinner. It refers to the prac ce of
cu ng back your perennials early this month (or a bit earlier,
hence the nod to Chelsea flower Show at the end of May) to make
them shorter so less likely to flop and flower a li le later. It works
well with plants such as the bigger sedums, phlox and helenium.
It does look a bit dras c, so what I do is cut some back and leave the rest. That
way you get a longer flowering season. Of course if you have wonderfully
staked, sturdy plants there is no need.
The other job to be ge ng on with is deadheading. Most flowering plants
benefit from it; if you let them set seed they can think their job is done and
stop flowering. Roses, sweet peas, bedding plants such as geraniums and most
of the daisy family all benefit from a regular snip. I cut back hard alchemilla
mollis as well, although they are a great plant they can take over.
I’ve finally got the hang of astran as. They are lovely this year in the borders at
Charnwood obviously thriving a er the early wet weather. If you are not familiar with them, the pre y li le flowerheads look like li le pincushions, las ng
for weeks. Astran as belong to the cow parsley family and prefer moisture
reten ve soil in light shade and an occasional mulch of compost. They have a
reasonable colour range, mainly pale pinks through to the ones I love, the dark,
rich reds. My experience here is that they don’t look much when you first plant
them and take 2 or 3 years to clump up and get established, but when they do
it’s clear they are worth a bit of pa ence. It’s the kind of plant that doesn’t take
up too much room and mixes well.
Other plants that love the wet weather are ferns. Again they take a while to get
going, but we now have a good collec on. The shu lecock fern Ma euccia
struthiopteris has been absolutely spectacular, growing to around 5 feet. That
one likes damp soil, but some, such as the Dryopteris family, can tolerate drier
condi ons. Ferns prefer to be planted or divided in the spring with a good
mulch of leafmould if you have it.
This is the me of year I do a bit of chea ng. I have a few dahlias in pots ready
to pop into gaps in the border. I keep them in the pots so can s ck them back
in the greenhouse when the frosts do for them. Works well for me and you can

The report of the Care Quality Commission on the prac ce is now completed
and available on the CQC website (www.cqc.org.uk). The prac ce passed in
all 5 categories.

prac ce or in the library or various local shops.
We have 30 members for our virtual group, but are s ll looking for more,
par cularly in the “under 40” age group, to reflect the prac ce popula on
demography. Applica on forms can be obtained from the prac ce recep on
or by downloading from the prac ce website.
2nd- 6th June is PPG awareness week. Members of your PPG will be present in
the prac ce to meet pa ents and talk about our work. Refreshments will
also be available on Monday 2nd.

Tollerton Against Backdoor Urbanisation
4000 Houses for Tollerton
The me for the examina on of the plans is drawing closer and the Inspector
has published a slightly revised metable.
Registering will be easy. You can only register from 10 June and can do it online
at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. Fill in your name, address, date of birth, and
your Na onal Insurance number and a few other details (you can find your NI
number on payslips, NI card etc).
The examina on is in public so you are welcome to a end the hearings as an
observer although you can only speak by invita on of the Inspector. It will take
place at Rushcliffe Arena, Rugby Rd, West Bridgford, No ngham NG2 7HY. It
begins at 10am on Tuesday 1st July 2014 and it is expected to con nue for two
weeks.
If you’re not sure whether you are registered under the new system from 10
June, contact the Borough Council in mid-July on 0115 981 9911. More details
will be available on the Borough Council’s website at www.rushcliffe.gov.uk/ier.

Registering to vote is changing
On 10 June 2014, the way you register to vote is changing. The Government is
introducing Individual Electoral Registra on (IER) across the country. Currently,
registra on is done by the householder, who completes the canvass form for all
residents eligible to vote in the household. Under IER, everyone in the household who is eligible to vote is responsible for registering themselves. The new
process will be quicker, more convenient and make the electoral register more
secure.
If you are not on the register, you can’t vote. There is a General Elec on in 2015
and there are also elec ons for the Borough Council and parish councils.
Being on the register is proof of your iden ty and is used by many organisa ons
to check proof of iden ty and where you live. If you want a credit card, to open
a bank account, to take out a mobile phone contract or apply for a mortgage,
these companies check the electoral in order to counteract fraud.
Not only will you not be able to have a say at future elec ons, but if you don’t
respond to requests for informa on from the Borough Council, you could be at
risk of ge ng fined £80.
via the A6011, providing a direct route into the City Centre both by car
and by public transport without acknowledging the highways authori es’
conclusions that any improvements may reduce the impact of 4000
houses but will s ll worsen the exis ng peak traffic conges on. The
developers seem to be working on two roundabout accesses to the Ring
Road, although the Highways Agency was clear that it wanted only one.
The plan extends further south than shown on Rushcliffe’s proposals,
sweeping away the allotment site opposite North End Co ages as part of
their green infrastructure, and includes a proposed gypsy/travellers’ site
at the southern end of the alloca on adjacent to the ring road.

TABU exists to campaign against developments which would alter the
rural nature of Tollerton as a village.
In Rushcliffe, there are around 88,000 people registered to vote and the Borough Council es mates that 85% (about 75,000) of people won’t have to do
anything to make sure they can s ll vote. They will be automa cally transferred
onto the new register. In simple terms, you will be told by le er in July if your
name has been transferred and you will also be told what to do if your name
hasn’t been transferred for a number of reasons.
About 13,000 people will be affected and will have to do something and we’ll
tell them what to do in a le er in July. These people include people registering
for the first me, students and people in care or residen al homes. We will
write to everyone who needs to provide addi onal informa on from July onwards. By law, you must then provide the informa on we are reques ng. We
will tell you clearly what you need to do and will provide all the help we can.
If you are registering to vote for the first me, you will need to provide your
name, na onal insurance number and date of birth. Under IER you will be able
to do this online. Once your details have been checked, you will be added to the
register.

Sainsbury’s Local Adopts Squadron
We are grateful to Sainsbury’s Local at Keyworth for choosing our Squadron as their
charity for 2014/15. So look out for informa on about the Squadron and details

Swynnerton Camp
Congratula ons to Corporal Maxwell who won the Flight Commander’s award at
Swynnerton camp. Two other cadets, Corporals Mackay and Haywood were 2nd in
command of the two winning flights. Over 400 cadets a ended from all around the
South and East Midlands Wing of which 8 were from 2425 Squadron, based at
Tollerton.

helped to man the PR tent and
test the wares on sale at our tea
and cake stall! The highlight of
the event was undoubtedly the
excellent display of Zumba skills
from the Squadron team that
joined in the open session. We
are pre y sure it was a success
judging by the members of the
public who stood open mouthed saying they’d never seen anything like that
before…or are we misinterpre ng their reac on?!
In Brief
A minibus full of cadets and staff enjoyed the air show at RAF Cosford in June. This
event also helped them to brush up their ‘aircra recogni on’ skills. Look out for us
at Rempstone Steam and Country Fair (12th-13th July). We are currently checking out
a poten al new venue for next year’s Presenta on Evening.
