Bible’s role in public schools topic of weekly breakfast

BLACKFOOT — As the
weekly legislative breakfast comes to an end, the
subject of religion being
taught in the public school
system became the hot
topic of the morning.
The discussion opened
with the bill regarding
allowing the Bible to be
taught in the classrooms.
According to www.legislature.idaho.gov/legislation/2016/S1342, the bill
repeals and adds to existing law to provide when
religious texts, including
the Bible, are permitted to
be used in public schools,
with exceptions.
“I would love to teach
a comparative religion
course, but we have 30
kids with different backgrounds,” said “We The
People” instructor Holly
Kartchner. “Teachers open
themselves up for abuse.”
“I think we should keep
religion out of schools
altogether,” said retired
teacher Lamar Hagar. “If
they want religion they can
go to church.”

New details hint at role of psychology in Bergdahl defense
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)
— Well before Sgt. Bowe
Bergdahl walked away
from his Army post in
Afghanistan, he washed
out of the Coast Guard
three weeks into boot
camp when he was found
on the barracks floor suffering a panic attack, his
hands covered in blood
from a nosebleed.
Two years later, though,
he joined the Army, obtaining a waiver from rules that
bar the enlistment of those
with certain psychological
problems.
The details about his
mental health — including
the Army’s later diagnosis of Bergdahl as suffering
from “schizotypal personality disorder” — are contained in newly released
documents that offer a
glimpse of the legal strategy his lawyers may use in
the desertion case against
him.
“That evidence will be
really important during
the sentencing hearing. In
the military, for almost all
crimes, you can be convicted and still get no jail
time,” said Eric Carpenter,
a law professor at Florida
International University
who served as an Army
prosecutor and defense
attorney but has no role in
the Bergdahl case.
Bergdahl, 29, was held
five years by the Taliban
and its allies before he
was swapped in 2014
for five Guantanamo Bay
detainees in a deal bitterly
criticized by members of
Congress. He is charged
not only with desertion
but with endangering comrades who were sent out to
search for him, and could
get life in prison if convicted at a military trial set
to begin this summer.
In a 2014 interview
soon after his release,
Bergdahl told a general
investigating his disappearance that he grew up
reading about the samurai code and World War
II heroes, spending much
of his time alone wandering the Idaho woods with
cats, dogs and horses. He
loved the ocean and found
the Coast Guard’s domestic mission honorable, but
admitted in the interview
to being overwhelmed
around other people.
“Growing up the way
I grew up, I also lacked
the understanding of how
to move through society,”
he said, according to the
documents released by his
lawyers.
He found the pressure
intense at a Coast Guard
boot camp in 2006: “You
were right there in the focal
point and every action you
were doing was pressured
and it was watched. What

Beginning fall of 2016
Blackfoot High School will
go to a six period day.
The goal is to create
a structure that will give
students a full year of Math
and English.
“We are concerned with
learning gaps in Math and
English,” said BHS Science
teacher Mark Pettinger.
“It is possible students
can go two full trimesters
without taking a Math and
English class.”
The new structure
will promote dual credit
classes, and SAT preparation classes as well as
intervention classes that
will help students who
are having trouble keeping grades up.
“It looks like you are
addressing both ends of
the spectrum,” said board
trustee Bonnie Hepworth.
“Helping students with
SAT’s and also helping
struggling students. I really
like that.”
Cue to the increase
in the Math and English
classes Seniors next year
will be required to have 55
credits to graduate, juniors
58, Sophmores 61 and
Freshman 64.
Superintendent Brian
Kress asked the board to
close the Summit Academy,
a project based learning
charter school, due to lack
of interest.
“It is with a heavy
heart that I ask the board
to dissolve the Summit
Academy,” said Kress.
“Interest did not grow to
what we needed.”
The board agreed unanimously to dissolve the
academy at the end of this
school year.
Beginning next year students from the academy
will attend Mountain View
Middle School.

The officer who conducted the investigation,
Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl,
later testified at a hearing
that Bergdahl was found
on the floor, blood on his
hands. Bergdahl told Dahl
that at the time, his family,
especially his father, had
been making him feel as
if “I can’t succeed in anything, that I am a failure.”
Bergdahl said a psychiatrist asked him to
sign paperwork, and he
received an “uncharacterized discharge” from the
Coast Guard. In court, his
lawyers have described it
as a “psychological discharge.”
In 2008, however,
Bergdahl was granted
a waiver to enter the
Army, which at the time
had relaxed its recruitment standards because it
was stretched thin by the
fighting in both Iraq and
Afghanistan.
He told Dahl that he
disclosed his panic attack
and reasons for leaving the
Coast Guard to an Army
recruiter. The recruiter
then typed a statement for
Bergdahl to sign saying he
“had a hard time adapting
to change” but not mentioning the panic attack,
Bergdahl said.
By several accounts, his
Army stint was successful
until he walked off and
fell into the hands of the
Taliban, with one sergeant
testifying last September:
“He was a great soldier.”
The documents released
Wednesday night also
include a form from
July 2015 showing that
an Army Sanity Board
Evaluation concluded that
Bergdahl suffered from
schizotypal
personality disorder when he left
his post in Afghanistan. A
Mayo Clinic website says
people with the disorder
have trouble interpreting social cues and can
become significantly distrustful of others.
However, the sanity
board said that despite the
“severe mental disease
or defect,” Bergadhl was
able to understand that his
actions in walking away
from his unit were wrong.
The board also concluded
Bergdahl isn’t currently
suffering from psychological problems that would
prevent him from standing
trial.
On Thursday, Bergdahl’s
lawyer Army Lt. Col.
Franklin
Rosenblatt
declined to discuss how
the psychiatric issues figure in their strategy. But
defense arguments at his
2015 Article 32 hearing —
similar to a civilian grand
jury proceeding — shed
light on the role his mental
health may play.
Defense
attorney
Eugene Fidell told the
officer presiding over the
hearing that mitigating factors in the case include
“the psychological diagnosis that’s before you, and
the need for continuing
medical and psychiatric or
psychological care. This is
totally undisputed.”
Fidell also said the decision to let Bergdahl in the
Army was “improvident.”
“I think a reasonable
observer,
nonetheless,
would wonder why the
Army would’ve taken a
person who, within the
relatively recent past, had
bilged out of Coast Guard
recruit training — boot
camp — for this kind of
reason,” he said.
Bergdahl’s diagnosis
could garner sympathy
from jurors if it is allowed
as evidence during the
guilt-or-innocence phase
of the court-martial, said
retired Army Maj. Gen.
Walt Huffman, who served
as the branch’s top lawyer and later as dean of
the Texas Tech University
School of Law.
“Sometimes juries hear
things and say, ‘We understand the law and all that,
but it’s not right to punish
this guy,’” Huffman said.
Some legal experts said
the diagnosis may not be
allowed in at that stage,
but it’s likely to give the
defense a strong argument
for leniency at sentencing.
Carpenter said the waiver letting Bergdahl into the
Army could also be a factor
at sentencing and help the
soldier win a lighter punishment. “A panel member could think that the
Army shares some blame
for what happened,” the
law professor said.

I was recently made
very proud, and also
Star
very humbled, by receivParker
ing the Ronald Reagan
Award, given at the annual Conservative Political
Action Conference by the
American Conservative
Union.
Regarding the award, ACU says: “The winners of
this award, our highest honor, are not household
names, but the men and women working in the
trenches, who sacrifice and, in so doing, set an
example for others.”
I write about this at the risk of coming off as the
opposite of humble. After all, Star, really -- announcing your award to the world?
I’m writing about it because of the chaotic time
we are in now, and because, no, it is not about Star
Parker. It is about America and working to save our
country.
It is important that Americans, and particularly
minority Americans, see that there is a hardworking American black woman who shares the ideals
of Ronald Reagan and believes that America is an
anointed nation with a mission.
What are those ideals? Traditional values, limited
government, free markets and a strong national
defense.
But let’s specifically talk about race and the vision
of America as a free nation under God.
Nothing has torn this nation apart more than
race. We fought a bloody civil war over it. And even
today, 240 years after the nation’s founding, it continues to tear us apart.
Too many black Americans don’t sign on to the
idea of America as a free nation under God. They
are consumed with anger and cynicism because of
a genuinely brutal American history toward people
of color.
Instead of seeing the nation as one founded on
eternal truths imperfectly applied by men of flesh
and blood, they choose to see the nation as fatally
flawed from the beginning. So they participate with
enthusiasm in the project of the left to transform
America from being a free nation under God to a
secular, welfare state. And sadly, the more the USA
becomes exactly this, blacks themselves pay the
highest price for these distortions of human truth.
It is particularly sad that black Americans, who
attend church with greater frequency than any other
ethnic group, who, more than any other ethnic
group, tell pollsters that religion plays a central role
in their lives, sign on to the party of meaninglessness
and nihilism, the party of abortion, homosexuality
and socialism.
The civil rights movement was supposed to be
about freedom. The dream, in the words of Dr. King,
was “free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we
are free at last.”
Then instead of it being about freedom, it became
about payback. It became about government, welfare and diversity as an ideal unto itself.
The culture of blame and victimhood has now
moved beyond blacks and is capturing the spirit of
the whole nation. But still, blacks pay the highest
price. Broken families and a spirit of helplessness
have frozen black unemployment and poverty at
twice the national average for half a century.
Failed public schools are destroying black children. Yet black support for Hillary Clinton is as
strong as ever, despite her support of these public
schools and self-serving teachers unions. Clinton
stands against parental empowerment and school
choice.
Look around. America is proof that anyone with
a healthy spirit and the right values can rise above
the worst circumstances and that even the best circumstances cannot save a sick spirit and sick values.
Our national soul has become dangerously mired
in negative energy. There are far too few people
turning eyes upward to the heavens, taking responsibility for their own lives and respecting their neighbors as God’s unique creations.
This is what America is about. This is what
President Reagan was about. And it’s also what
Star Parker is about, which is why I am humbled to
receive the Ronald Reagan Award.

Do Trump’s rivals benefit by blaming him?
Marco Rubio lays much
of the blame for the mass
protest that shut down
Donald Trump’s Chicago
rally on Trump himself. But
some of Rubio’s supporters
see things differently. They
see the protesters as bearing most or all of the guilt
for the chaos in Chicago.
And they point to the work
of leftist organizing groups
as the key factor in the
affair.
“It was too organized,”
said Cynthia Dugan, who
came to Concord Coffee
here in Lakeland to catch
Rubio’s quick stop Saturday
afternoon, just four days
before the Florida primary.
“I think it was organized
by MoveOn.org and Black
Lives Matter; it wasn’t just a
spontaneous event.”
I asked Dugan who was
to blame. “The protesters,” she answered. “And,
unfortunately, some of the
press.”
“To me, it’s just too well
organized -- MoveOn.
org and George Soros
are spending a tremendous amount of money
to disrupt,” said Richard
Dempsey, of Lakeland. I
asked Dempsey whether
he blamed Trump for the
chaos in Chicago. “No, I
don’t,” Dempsey said. “I
think it’s an effort to discredit Trump. Everybody
from every direction is trying to discredit him and
defeat his campaign. I’m
not a big supporter, but I
will vote for him if he is the
eventual nominee.”
I asked Dick Goddard,
of Lakeland, who was to
blame. “It’s the protesters,”
Goddard answered quickly. “They’ve got no business doing that.”
Dugan and Dempsey
said they will enthusiastically vote for Rubio on
Tuesday; Goddard said
he is still trying to choose
between Rubio and Ted
Cruz.
Earlier Saturday, in an
appearance in Largo, Rubio
conceded that the protesters were “not blameless” in
the Trump Chicago affair.
But Rubio saved his most
critical words for Trump
himself.
“I think we also have to
look at the rhetoric coming
from the front-runner in the
presidential campaign,”
Rubio told reporters. “This
is a man who in rallies has
told his supporters to basically beat up the people
who are in the crowd and
he will pay their legal fees.
Someone who has basically encouraged people in
the audience to rough up
anyone who stands up and
says something he doesn’t
like.”
“There are people
in this country that are
angry because they feel
disenfranchised from the
American dream,” Rubio
continued. “But the job of
a leader is not to stoke that
anger. The job of a leader
is to address the causes of
that anger and try to solve
it, not try to stoke that
anger so that they vote for
you.”
In rallies the day after
the Chicago chaos, Trump
emphasized the organized
nature of the disruption.
“We’re all together and
we want to get along with
everybody, but when they
have organized, professionally staged wise guys,
we’ve got to fight back,
we’ve got to fight back,”
Trump said in Dayton.
Trump was right about
the organization. In a
report headlined “How
Bernie Sanders supporters
shut down a Donald Trump
rally in Chicago,” NBC’s
Alex Seitz-Wald detailed
how veterans of the Occupy
movement, of Black Lives
Matter, of MoveOn.org,
and other organizations,
many of them now supporting Bernie Sanders,
worked together to over-
power Trump. And SeitzWald reported that Trump
may have picked the worst
possible location by coming to Chicago.
“The pump was primed
in Chicago,” Seitz-Wald
wrote, “thanks to now
near-constant demonstrations against Mayor Rahm
Emanuel over the shooting
of Laquan McDonald and
other issues. Trump chose
a venue, the University of
Illinois Chicago campus,
in the heart of the city,
where student organizers
whipped a demonstration together. And activists tapped into existing
networks of pro-Bernie
Sanders and Black Lives
Matter activists.”
“We wanted to show
Trump that this is Chicago,
and we run Chicago, and
we’re not going to take
this,” Seitz-Wald quoted
local activist Ja’Mal Green
as saying. “We got better
organizers here.”
“Remember
the
#TrumpRally wasn’t just
luck,” tweeted the proSanders group People for
Bernie. “It took organizers from dozens of organizations and thousands of
people to pull off. Great
work.”
The Los Angeles Times
published a similar report,
“How black, Latino and
Muslim college students
organized to stop Trump’s
rally in Chicago.” Even Bill
Ayers, the 1960s Weather
Underground bomber who
became a bete noir of conservatives in the Obama
years, was in the picture.
“We shut Trump down!”
Ayers tweeted after the
cancelled rally. “Beautiful
gathering of anti-racist
youth.”
Still, Rubio directed
most of his blame at Trump.
Fellow Trump rivals Ted
Cruz and John Kasich also
placed blame on the frontrunner. Now, the question
is whether their supporters
agree.
Yes, some Rubio voters blamed Trump. “He
brought it on himself,”
said Chickie Migliaccio, of
Kissimmee, who came to
see Rubio in Lakeland. “He
incites people, he’s provocative,” added Chickie’s
husband Pat. “Hey, I’m
from New Jersey. We
don’t talk that way in New
Jersey.”
But many of Rubio’s
supporters, and Republican
voters in general, are big
consumers of conservative media, and for years
they have seen reports
about MoveOn.org, about
Occupy, about Black Lives
Matter, about Soros, about
Ayers -- a veritable roster
of villainy on the left. Now
they are seeing (accurate)
reports that some of those
groups were behind the
Trump protests in Chicago.
And they are supposed to
blame Trump? Not likely.
But that doesn’t mean
they
support Trump.
Indeed, the reactions at
the small Rubio event in
Lakeland served to show
that voters can support a
non-Trump candidate and
at the same time believe
Trump was unjustly targeted by left-wing activists.
Take Cynthia Dugan, who
has liked Rubio for years.
“I support him because he’s
a gentleman and he’s got
good ethics,” Dugan told
me. “He’s a family man,
and he absolutely knows
the issues.”
The bottom line is,
the more Republicans
learn about the events in
Chicago, the more they are
likely to blame the leftwing activists behind the
chaos. It seems unlikely
that Rubio, or Cruz, or
Kasich, will gain much by
blaming Trump. For many
Republican voters, blaming the actual culprits in
the Trump Chicago affair
is a matter of seeing the far
left, not Trump, as the real
adversary -- and that does
not necessarily equal supporting Trump.

Idaho panel sends anti-Shariah law bill to House for changes
BOISE, Idaho (AP) —
Amid growing concerns
about Muslim immigration, state lawmakers
Thursday advanced legislation prohibiting Shariah
law or any other foreign
statutes from influencing
Idaho courts. But the bill’s
future remains uncertain.
Lawmakers are considering the measure despite
drawing criticism last year
when they rejected an
international treaty that
made it easier for single
parents worldwide to collect child-support payments. They argued the
deal could allow Islamic
law to influence American
courts, but ended up
reversing their decision
in a special session under
mounting pressure.
The latest bill would
keep Idaho courts and government agencies from basing rulings on foreign laws
that don’t supply the same
rights guaranteed in the
U.S. and state constitutions.
Worries about the
spread of Shariah have surfaced in several states in
recent years, often resulting in proposals to restrict
the use of foreign law in
state courts.
Opponents say the
measures amount to antiIslamic fear-mongering
and note that Shariah law
— a strict interpretation of
the Quran and the Prophet
Mohammed’s teachings
— has never trumped
U.S. state or federal law.
Supporters, meanwhile,
say the legislation protects
states’ rights in an increasingly globalized world.
In Idaho, the House State
Affairs Committee sent the
measure to the House floor
for amendments Thursday
after both Republicans and
Democrats expressed concerns about how it would
affect international contracts, like adoptions and
commercial deals between
Idaho’s agricultural sec-
tor and other countries.
Shariah law isn’t specifically mentioned in the bill
but was the center of the
discussion and testimony.
It’s unknown if House lawmakers will amend and vote on
the bill before the Legislature
adjourns next week.
Rep. Brent Crane,
R-Nampa, and other conservatives hope they do.
“I like the general direction of where this is headed
— that we are going to tell
our judges and our courts
that you are going to use
American laws and Idaho
laws when you are making
your rulings and interpretations,” Crane said.
The bill represents rising fears of Shariah law
and Muslim immigration in Idaho. Last year,
a former Muslim-turnedevangelical pastor met with
several lawmakers in the
Statehouse, warning about
Shariah law’s impact in
rural parts of the state, and
more recently he has called
for restrictions on Syrian
and Muslim immigration.
The bill’s sponsor,
Republican Rep. Eric
Redman of Athol, maintains Shariah law is seeping into U.S. and European
court cases.
“Invoking foreign law
and foreign legal doctrines
... is a means of imposing
an agenda on the American
people, while circumventing the U.S. and state constitutions,” he said.
To date, there are no
known Idaho court decision that has been influenced by Shariah law.
Redman says 10 other
states have passed similar
measures.
Meanwhile,
another House committee
approved a separate bill
Thursday that would
expressly allow the Bible
to be used in public
school instruction. Senate
Bill 1342 is headed to the
House floor for a vote.
Idaho oil and gas commission starts rulemaking process
Fight over public lands is
brewing in statehouse
BOISE, Idaho (AP) —
Idaho lawmakers are once
again reviving efforts to
convince the federal government to relinquish
control over public lands
throughout the Gem State
and much of the West.
Disagreement
over
management of federal land has spanned
decades. However, tensions between the competing interests have peaked
in the wake of an armed
takeover of an Oregon
wildlife refuge that lasted
41 days, multiple arrests
and one death earlier this
year.
Rep. Judy Boyle, a
Republican from Midvale,
traveled to Oregon twice
during the standoff at the
Malheur National Wildlife
Refuge to show support for
the armed protesters. She
has since introduced two
public lands proposals to
the Idaho Legislature.
The first measure would
remove past consent of
land sales to the federal
government — an argument repeatedly struck
down in courts. The second bill would create a
management framework
in the unlikely event it
acquires federal lands.
Public docs detail new
for-profit medical school
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A
new for-profit osteopathic
medical school is opening in Idaho, promising to
bring more doctors to the
rural Intermountain West.
The Idaho College of
Osteopathic Medicine is
a private, for-profit company, but it is affiliated
with the public Idaho State
University and its students
will have access to ISU’s
campus in Meridian.
Supporters say the new
school will bring an economic boost and improve
health care across the
state, while opponents
worry that it could tax
existing infrastructure for
Idaho medical students
and that profits could
take precedence over
training.
The Associated Press
reviewed
more
than
600 pages of documents
obtained from Gov. C.L.
“Butch” Otter’s office
through a public records
request.
The records show state
officials felt they were on
a tight timeline to woo the
school’s investors to the
state, finalizing the deal in
just a little over five weeks.
The documents also
show school officials
promised to create a fund
to help medical institutions
consider creating new residency positions, but they
didn’t say how much that
fund would be.
Residencies cost about
$150,000 per student per
year and are normally
funded through Medicare.
Otter to sign ultrasound bill
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Legislation requiring abortion
providers to give women information on accessing free
ultrasound services is headed to the governor’s desk for
his signature.
The Idaho Senate voted 28-7 on House Bill 516 on
Thursday. Only Democratic lawmakers voted against
sending the measure to Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter.
If approved, the Idaho Department of Health and
Welfare would compile a list of providers that offer
free ultrasounds for women seeking abortions. The list
would be part of the informed consent brochures abortion providers are required to distribute.
Supporters argue the bill is needed to provide
information to women contemplating an abortion.
However, opponents cited concerns that the legislation does not require free ultrasound providers to offer
medically accurate information.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) —
The Idaho Oil and Gas
Conservation Commission
on Thursday began the
process of writing new
rules for the oil and gas
industry with input from
the public under a new
law aimed at speeding up
energy production.
The commission on a
4-0 vote set in motion a
process known as negotiated rulemaking that will
take months and is needed to align current rules
with an industry-backed
bill signed into law by
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter
on Wednesday.
The new law makes
the Idaho Department of
Lands responsible for initial drilling decisions and
the five appointed members of the commission
more of an appellate body
that approves or reverses
those decisions.
After the meeting, commission chairman Chris
Beck said the change
means experts will handle technical aspects and
“we’ll be given the opportunity to make a decision
if someone appeals it, and
I think that’s appropriate.”
Commissioners also
voted 3-1 to approve a
plan that outlines the
overall strategy for the
commission, which was
formed in 2013.
Houston-based
Alta Mesa has at times
expressed frustration as
Idaho tries to catch up
with an industry using
new technologies that
have located what companies believe are profitable reserves. The company backed the new law,
which went into effect
with Otter’s signature,
and also liked the strategic plan the commission
approved.
“I think both those
are positive steps,” company attorney Michael
Christian said. “The legislation that we pursued
I think will help give
everybody better definition and certainty about
how the processes will
work and I think these
two things today are just
the next step in that evolution.”
State officials say the
company has 18 wells
in some stage of w
development in southwestern
Idaho, with six listed as
producing.
Justin Hayes of the
Idaho
Conservation
League told the commission that his group
favored going ahead
with the negotiated rulemaking process.
However,
because
state lawmakers set oil
and gas rules by statute with the recent law,
it’s not clear how much
leeway regulators and
the public will have in
developing those rules.
“People who I hear
from are concerned
about making sure we
have enough protections for ground water,
House mull Medicaid gap
that domestic wells are
being monitored appropriately,” Hayes said after the
meeting. “We’ll hopefully
be able to discuss those
issues in rulemaking.”
The proposed rules
must be ready by late
November so they can
go before lawmakers the
Legislature for approval
next year.

FIRTH — The greatest tragedy of all happened in the Garden
of Eden. What was the
great tragedy? It was
sin! The third chapter
of Genesis records how
the close connection
between God and the
people is broken. They
had been as close as
any wonderful family
could ever be. But then
they became divided as
only the closest flesh
and blood families can
become separated. The
brokenness
continued
from years to hundreds
of years to thousands of
years.
Then came Jesus, God’s
only Son, to be our salvation from our sinful selves.
Next week is Holy
Week and Friday will be
Good Friday. The reason
Christians call it Good
Friday (originally God’s
Friday) is because we can
focus on Jesus on the cross,
and know that he is there
for each one of us. We
know that, no matter what
comes, we are loved with
a love that is deeper and
stronger than any of our
enemies. The love of God
reaches down deeper than
death. It reaches out to rescue us from the worst evil
powers that might attack
us. It reaches deeper than
any sin that has been a
part of our lives.
God doesn’t say to us,
“If you show a bit of good
heart to me for a change, I
will make it up with you.”
He doesn’t even say, “If
you’ve got some good
intentions about spiritual
things I’ll accept you back
again.”
No. He reconnects us

A Love That Will Not Let You Go
After her six ducklings were
swept into a storm drain, a mother
mallard waddled two miles tracking
her baby’s chirps from manhole to
manhole.
Trapped in the sewer system,
the ducklings’ only hope was in
their mother. Hearing their chirps
emanating from under the ground,
the mother followed their cries.
Her journey led her across a busy
intersection, a metro train line and
two school playing fields. When her
chicks came to a halt in a housing
development, she waddled to a stop
over a manhole cover. And there,
for the next four hours, the mother
remained.
Peter Elliott first noticed the duck
at 6 a.m. Later, after breakfast, his
daughter took his two-year-old
grandson to see the mallard and they
heard the ducklings’ voices beneath
the manhole cover.
Mr. Elliot removed the heavy
cover and lifted each duck to safety
and released family in a lake.
Like that mother duck, our heavenly Father will never forsake us.

Do we honestly face the reality of death? In John chapter 12,
Mary of Bethany realizes that Jesus’

that is sure and unchanging in this
world that is so uncertain then the

By small and simple
things are great things
brought to pass. And again,
even the smallest candle
can ignite a mighty flame.
September 1835, two
men rode on horseback a
distance of 25 miles from
Mantua, Ohio to the small
community of Kirtland.
The one manGlenn
was a young
Rawson
student enrolled
at the
Presbyterian school of
Oberlin College. He was
beginning a new semester of studies at Oberlin.
He came from something
of privileged background,
his father being a prosperous farmer and a community man. He had grown
up with a close family and
many opportunities for the
day. The other fellow, considerably older, was a frontiersman born in Vermont,
and something of a rustic
who had never had the
privilege of learning, letters, and a life of opportunity. He had left home
when just a boy and carved
out a homestead in the
wilderness of southeastern
Michigan. So removed was
he from the joys of home
and family life as a child
that he lived out his days
never knowing his own
birthdate.
As the two men rode
along, of course they conversed—on many subjects.
Years later, the young student said, “I was at first
disposed to treat his opinions lightly, especially so,
as they were not always
clothed in grammatical
language.”
They talked of philosophy and then the subject
turned to religion. The
older man, in the course
of conversation, began
to open up the scriptures
and explain the plan of
salvation and the conditions of the human family.
As he did so, the disposition of his friend began to
change. The young student
found himself unable to
resist the knowledge that
[this] was a man of God.
I felt pricked in my heart,”
he said. Though his language may not have been
the most refined, the man,
“possessed a mind of deep
thought and rich intelligence.” He so opened the
eyes and expanded the
mind of the young man
that it forever changed him.
Almost 64 years later that
student, now an old man at
the end of his days would
reflect back on that day as
follows,
“All the circumstances
of my first and last meeting
with [him] are as clear to
my mind as if it were an
occurrence of but yesterday….He appeared to me
then to be a remarkable
man, and that impression
has remained with me ever
since….This was the turning point in my life. What
impressed me most was his
absolute sincerity, his earnestness and his spiritual
power.”
The man bore a powerful witness of the truthfulness of the restored Gospel
and then charged the
young man to go before the
Lord that night and ask for
himself. To that charge he
was true. The young man
was subsequently baptized
and himself went on to
greatness in the eyes of the
Almighty. He was Lorenzo
Snow. Young Snow would
never have the opportunity
of meeting with his friend
again in this life, for within three years his mentor
would die a martyr—the
first apostolic martyr of this
dispensation—David W.
Patten.
And thus is the power
of simple humble, fearless
testimony.

gone through growing
