Stewart Hegeman. The two originally intended to design home audio speakers. They experimented with different types of cone materials ultimately choosing aluminum for its speed, strength and transient abilities. Larry and Ron spent several years building and working in recording studios around New York and New Jersey–all the while continuing to experiment with aluminum speaker designs. In the late 70s, Hartke worked repairing Ampex tape machines. It was there, in a wellequipped metal shop, the original dies for Hartke aluminum speaker cones were machined. At the same time Lorman became stage manager/ sound engineer at the famous Bottom Line club in New York’s Greenwich Village. It was here that Lorman met hundreds of artists including bass legend Jaco Pastorius. After hearing their prototype aluminum cone monitors, Jaco suggested they build him a bass cabinet. They did (opposite page). Soon, Larry and Ron were testing their aluminum cone cabinets on stage with some of the hottest musicians of the day. Later, Lorman would travel the world as an engineer for artists like Frank Zappa, Paul Simon, Jack Bruce and Miles Davis. Ron tested the Hartke prototypes on stages around the world. Jaco, Marcus Miller, Jack Bruce and Garry Tallent would be some of the first artists to play Hartke cabinets on stage. Aluminum speakers produced a sound that had never been heard before: a clear, punchy, accurate sound with far broader dynamics for greater expression. Led by pioneers like Jaco, bass players were coming out front. And Hartke cabinets provided the necessary clarity and definition. Word began to spread, and soon everyone wanted to try a Hartke cabinet. Larry and Ron hand built twenty 4x10 cabinets and essentially gave them away. Early recipients included legends like Darryl Jones and Will Lee. Hartke hit it big in the mid 80s in New York City with a show many consider to be the first show to feature bass players. The showcase featured Jaco Pastorius, Darryl Jones, Jerry Peak of the Steve Morse Band, and Bill “Buddha” Dickens, who was then playing with Ramsey Lewis. In 1985 the first Hartke production models were built. The first cabinet was a 4x10 module, the 410XL. Soon after came a 1x15 and a 2x10 module. All are still in production. Since then, Hartke has introduced a complete line of bass gear, from cabinets to combos, amps to bass guitars. Today Hartke makes bass systems perfect for everyone, from beginners to experts. Ron and Larry run the same kind of hands on, personal operation they did from the start. They continue to refine their revolutionary aluminum speakers, and remain committed to providing the ultimate in professional performance. 3 More than 20 years ago, Hartke redefined the sound of the electric bass with aluminum. Strong, rigid and light, aluminum cone speakers are faster, crisper and more defined. Innovative cabinet designs with careful use of ports and high frequency drivers are also part of the full range picture. But it’s the aluminum that adds the magic. Hartke drivers add unmistakable crispness to the midrange, bringing hidden high frequencies and harmonics to life. That’s the Hartke punch. Today’s production version: the 810XL The Legend: JACO PASTORIUS John Francis Anthony Pastorius III was born in Florida in 1951. The son of a jazz drummer, Jaco picked up music early. A drummer first, he picked up the bass at age 15. He would go on to revolutionize the way the instrument was played. A master of jazz, funk, R&B and reggae, he created a new style of playing using muting techniques, and false harmonics. He developed the ability to play bass and rhythm guitar parts simultaneously, introducing harmony and midrange to bass guitar. Jaco was essentially the inventor of the fretless electric bass, and legend tells of him ripping frets out of his guitar one night and filling the grooves with wood putty. His fame grew quickly among musicians, and in 1976, his eponymously titled first album featured the likes of Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker and Lenny White. Jaco became world famous for his originality when he joined Joe Zawinul’s legendary fusion band Weather Report. Tragically, Jaco passed away in 1987 at the age of 35. He is remembered as one of the most important bass players of the 20th century. Larry Hartke is pictured with the cabinet changed the sound of the electric bass. This is the original 8 x 10 hand-made for Jaco Pastorius. By combining eight 10” aluminum drivers in a single stack, the cabinet introduced a midrange punch never heard before. It immediately grabbed the attention of the world’s finest bass players. 4 XL Series XL Series 5 ▲ The XL Series are simply legendary. EARLY 70s LATE 70s Company founders Larry Hartke and Ron Lorman, friends since Jr. High school, begin experimenting with aluminum speakers designed for Hi-Fi home audio use. Ron Lorman working as stage manager for Bottom Line club in New York City. The aluminum speakers are adapted for use with electric bass and tested at the club. Professional Series cabinets have the power handling and build quality one would expect at the top of the line. Professional Series cabinets take the signature ▲ Hartke tone to the next level. Professional Series 4200 Perhaps the only cabinet the working professional bassist would ever need, the 4200 matches four heavy-duty 10-inch aluminum cone drivers with a two-inch titanium driver in an extra-large wide dispersion horn. The combination provides incredible lows and mids, with the ability to reproduce crystal clear highs when needed. The 4200 has crossover and horn level controls, a beautifully built birch plywood cabinet with symmetrical dampened ports on each side. Rated power handling is 400 watts at 4 ohms. Frequency response is 30hz - 15khz. It has recessed 1/4” and Speakon inputs, and corner protection with locking capability for stacking. ▲ 6 Professional Series Professional Series Professional Series 2200 ▼ The new 2200 was designed from the ground up to be the new signature bass cabinet of the Hartke line. It has an allnew 2 x 12 plus horn array built into an amazing 3/4” composite plywood and baltic birch cabinet. The angled top portion of the cabinet not only adds to the room projecting capabilities of the speaker, it allows the bass player to better self-monitor. One 12” aluminum driver and a perfectly matched 1” compression driver in a medium-throw horn are mounted in the angled portion, while another 12” driver and dual curved ports fire straight out from the lower section. The 4 ohm cabinet handles 300 watts, frequency response is 29 Hz–16kHz. A crossover with overload protection is builtin. the 2200 has recessed 1/4” and Speakon inputs, corner protection, and heavy-duty removable casters. “Since I got a 2200, I no longer need to haul around my full stack. This is the ultimate metro piece.” — Jack Knight Funk Filharmonik, NYC Professional Series 2100 ▼ Even more portable, the compact 2100 is similar in most respects to the 2200. It has dual 10” aluminum drivers and the same 1” compression driver. At 4 ohms, the 200 Watt 2100 cabinet will produce frequency response of 34 Hz–16 kHz. Professional Series 1800 The perfect bottom. The matched 1800 low end cab with an 18” driver provides an awesome extended low end to any full range cabinet. The perfect compliment to the 4200, or the classic Hartke XL Series full range cabinets. The 1800 takes in 600 watts at 4 ohms, and pushes out 28–300Hz with serious SPL. The 18” driver has a 3” long excursion coil, and a 120 oz. magnet. The rigid and dampened plywood cabinet has substantial internal bracing and features four front-firing air flow ports for extra punch. It has recessed 1/4” and Speakon inputs, corner protection, heavy-duty casters and a top handle for easy tilt-rolling. 1984 1985 The first 410 bass modules go on tour with Jaco Pastorius, Jack Bruce, Will Lee, Garry Tallent, Darryl Jones, and many other bassists. 1987 In conjunction with Guild Guitars, Hartke markets the first production model, the 410 Bass Module.
