It was a remarkable year. We celebrated 75 years of a wonderful tradition of ‘shoepeople helping shoepeople.’ Over 1,600 members of our footwear industry joined us in NYC for a spirited and colorful Gala, led by Gala Chairman Ken Hicks of Foot Locker. We celebrated the triumphs of Tim O’Donovan, our second Bob Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and raised a record-breaking $2.7M for our emergency social services and scholarship programs. Our revenue continued to grow steadily to meet the needs of footwear families who faced a crisis. We responded to thousands of emergency phone calls within 48 hours this year. We delivered $1.5M of emergency financial assistance to footwear employees from over 200 companies across the U.S. We provided 350 scholarships to young people from footwear families, designers and for veterans returning to a footwear job after military service. And we brought together 10,000 shoepeople during Footwear Cares and our 150 events from coast-to-coast. From the footwear industry – for a footwear community. The Two Ten Footwear Foundation is the footwear industry’s charitable foundation. In close partnership with our donors and other partners, we are concentrated on achieving high-impact philanthropic goals that help bring shoepeople together and change lives. Look no further than our 4-Star Charity Navigator rating to see 3 “Caring is the Two Ten mission.” how far we’ve come. The work we are all doing And today, as our industry continues to change to sustain, and grow, our distinctive ‘shoepeople and our connections with each other may shift, helping shoepeople’ tradition is crucial. caring is the one constant we can all still work for, Here’s why. and achieve. Caring is the Two Ten mission. Caring Our world is changing fast. I worry that changes at work, at home, in our communities, and in the digital world are all radically altering our fragile social fabric. 75 years ago, those caring natural and intimate connections gave birth to Two Ten Foundation. A Boston shoeperson needed help is on every page of our Annual Report that I hope you’ll enjoy. It is a great privilege to work alongside inspiring industry leaders and generous philanthropists, such as yourself, and I look forward to our collaboration and caring in the years ahead. after the Great Depression. His friends rallied. They took a collection for him and helped pay his bills. Call it whatever you want – ‘acts of kindness;’ ‘a Good Samaritan;’ ‘paying-it-forward;’ Neal Newman ‘the common good.’ I call it caring. PRESIDENT, TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION · 2014 ANNUAL REPORT · 4 About Two Ten Footwear Foundation As the only philanthropy in the U.S. that focuses solely on its own industry and workforce, the Two Ten Footwear Foundation brings shoepeople together to help each other during crisis, support each other as a community, and ensure a bright future for our industry’s workforce. From its humble, ‘pass the hat‘ beginnings in depression-era 1939, to serving over 250,000 footwear employees and their families today, Two Ten’s commitment to providing emergency financial assistance, scholarships, counseling services, and community building programs continues its 75-year legacy of changing lives. 5 CLIENT PERSPECTIVE Kelly’s Story “ My husband smelled the smoke first and moments later, our floors and walls were engulfed in flames in what’s called a flash fire. In just four minutes, our home was gone. But we’re lucky. We got out alive and we are fortunate to have the support of our friends who have opened their homes to us during this transition. Situations like these either define you or destroy you. Thankfully, Two Ten was there and helped us back on our feet.” TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION · 2014 ANNUAL REPORT · 6 75th Anniversary in Review 2014 JANUARY -- Women in Footwear Industry (WIFI) Northwest event at Outdoor Retailer with Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition (OIWC) -- Ars Sutoria course held in Waltham -- Two Ten Day recognized with Citation from Governor of Massachusetts -- WIFI Mentoring Program pairs 30 mentors with mentees -- Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFaNY)/Board Meeting FEBRUARY -- WIFI events in NYC and Las Vegas -- FN Platform sponsorship opportunity with National Shoe Travelers (NST) -- Young Professionals (YP for 210) members taught sneaker design to Boys & Girls Club members -- WIFI Boston event on networking at New Balance MARCH -- WIFI and YP for 210 hosted intellectual property event in Los Angeles -- YP for 210 members taught sneaker design to Boys & Girls Club members -- YP for 210 social event in NYC -- Footwear Cares ® supported by 6,500 volunteers from 100 footwear companies, serving 83 nonprofits from coast-to-coast APRIL -- WIFI events in Columbus and St. Louis -- YP for 210 members taught sneaker design to Boys & Girls Club members -- YP for 210 social event in NYC 7 -- United Shoe Retailers Association (USRA) May Event; Two Ten presentation MAY -- NY Golf Tournament -- Libby Edelman joins WIFI as Co-Chair -- Footwear News Summit; Two Ten sponsorship opportunity -- FFaNY/Board Meeting -- Human Resources Leadership Committee (HRLC) Summit featuring Tony Hsieh, Zappos.com JUNE -- WIFI NYC National Event “How Do You Measure Your Social ROI” moderated by Libby Edelman, featuring Rebecca Minkoff, Jodie and Danielle Snyder of Dannijo and Alison Koplar Wyatt of Refinery 29 -- YP for 210 honors Dave Grange of Lacoste -- Two Ten awards $750,000 to 350 national scholars JULY -- Fiscal Year 2015 begins -- Ars Sutoria costing class held in Waltham -- FN Platform AUGUST -- WIFI West Coast National Event “Leading Ladies” moderated by Meghan Cleary, featuring Hollie Delaney, Director of HR at Zappos.com; Jocelyn Kung, Founder and CEO of The Kung Group; Julie Molleston, Executive VP of HR for Advanstar; and Diane Woods, VP and General Manager of North America at Timberland -- Danny Muskat to lead YP for 210 -- St. Louis Golf Tournament -- Zappos-4-210 Fundraiser -- Atlanta Shoe Show; Two Ten presentation -- 75th Anniversary Celebration with Two Ten’s Honorary Board SEPTEMBER -- WIFI NYC -- OIWC networking event in Waltham -- WIFI events in Los Angeles, Boston, St. Louis and Milwaukee OCTOBER NOVEMBER -- Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) FTDC Conference; Two Ten sponsorship opportunity and presentation -- Launched Phase Two of Footwear Warriors Endowed Scholarship Fund -- Awarded Charity Navigator 4-Star Rating -- 1600 people attend annual gala and raise $2.7M -- FFaNY/Board Meeting DECEMBER -- NST donates $1M to Two Ten for NST scholarship fund -- Beth Cross of Ariat International and David Sharp of Rocky Brands, Inc. join Two Ten’s Board of Directors TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION · 2014 ANNUAL REPORT · 8 Impacts WITH YOUR SUPPORT, LAST YEAR WE PROVIDED: $1.5 MILLION TO 1,177 FOOTWEAR FAMILIES, AN ESTIMATED 3,200 PEOPLE $750,000 TO 350 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS HOUSING CAR ASSISTANCE UTILITIES 783 276 559 Evictions Prevented 9 Awards for Emergency Car Loan Assistance & Repair Families Received Emergency Utility Support CLIENT PERSPECTIVE “Within 24 hours, our lives had been changed.” Frannie’s Story Frannie and her family were literally five days away from eviction. She was expecting a baby and her husband, in desperate need of back surgery, could no longer work. She didn’t know how they were going to make ends meet. Thankfully, a co-worker shared a story with Frannie about how Two Ten had helped her out a couple of years back. While a bit skeptical, Frannie applied for help through the online portal at www.twoten.org and less than 24 hours later, she received a call from John, one of Two Ten’s case managers. “John was my hero; he was able to pay our back rent and overdue utility bills, which truly helped us get back on our feet.” Months later, Frannie’s husband has a new job, they have a new baby and their future is bright. “It’s an amazing feeling to be finally caught up on our bills,” Frannie said. “This was truly a blessing and I will be thankful for this organization for the rest of my life.” IN 2014 WE RECEIVED 2,144 CALLS; 97% WERE ANSWERED WITHIN 48 HOURS TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION · 2014 ANNUAL REPORT · 10 Social Services We are grateful fiscal year 2014 (July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014) was a year without any large-scale natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, which occurred in fiscal year 2013. Deeply rooted in community, Two Ten Footwear Foundation began as an informal system of support between “shoe workers” during the Great Depression. Many had fallen on hard times due to loss of their jobs and were supported by their colleagues who literally passed a hat amongst themselves to collect money for those who were out of work. This highly personal outreach represented a unique unity within a trade that believed helping each other was as much about individual survival as it was health of an entire industry. Realizing that passing a hat was not a sustainable way to provide financial assistance to their community, the group created a more organized effort that would lay the groundwork for its future. A modest cash donation and some office space at 210 Lincoln Street in footwear-centric Boston, Massachusetts launched what became known as the Two Ten Associates. As requests for financial assistance post-World War II increased from across the U.S., the Associates adjusted their organization from a volunteer-only basis and expanded their presence to include activities in major cities from Los Angeles to New York. 75 years after its humble beginnings, Two Ten Footwear Foundation now serves an industry of over 250,000 footwear employees and their families through programs and services that directly impact their lives. Funded entirely through the generosity of the footwear community and Foundation partners, Two Ten’s services include emergency financial assistance, scholarships and professional development, crisis counselling, career services, national networking events and much more. As the only philanthropy in the U.S. that focuses solely on supporting its own industry, Two Ten’s legacy mission is clear: to bring shoepeople together to help each other during crisis, support each other as a community, and ensure a bright future for our industry’s workforce. Two Ten changes the lives of people in the footwear community. Be a part of this change. Contact Kate Kaplan, Director of Development at (781) 736-1502 or kkaplan@twoten.org. 37 “I believe in the approach of making every interaction as personal as possible. It’s about the emotional engagement of letting people know how much you care. At Two Ten, it is truly personal on the most fundamental level; we’re directly impacting people’s lives in a positive way every day.” Diane Sullivan CEO, PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN, CALERES VICE CHAIR, TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION · 2014 ANNUAL REPORT · 38 TWO TEN FOOTWEAR FOUNDATION 1466 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451 p 781.736.1500 | f 781.736.1554 info @ twoten.org W W W.
