SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA BOUDIN TRAIL
Napa Valley has wine. New York has pizza. Wisconsin
has cheese. Southwest Louisiana has boudin! Boudin is
Louisiana’s spiced-up hybrid of pork or beef sausage. It’s a
tender, savory mix of pork, rice, liver, parsley and onions,
variously seasoned with salt, red pepper, black pepper and
garlic powder. Everything’s stirred together, stuffed into
casings and sold hot by the pound.Call it “BOO-dan” -- or,
better, “BOO-dehh,” with a French-style fadeoff at the
end. Call it a “link” if the regional sound escapes you.
Either way, call it delicious.
There’s mild boudin and hot boudin. There’s smoked
boudin, with a crispy casing. There’s shrimp, crawfish
and even alligator boudin. Bite it, slice it or squeeze it, and
you’ll discover Louisiana’s love of food crammed inside.
No two boudin recipes are alike.
Whether it’s sold at a restaurant, a grocery store or a gas
station, boudin has fillings and flavors reflecting the
individual tastes and traditions of each boudin maker.
Go to www.visitlakecharles.org/boudintrail for a complete
listing of eateries on the trail and attractions along the way.

HERITAGE
HISTORY:
The romantic history of Lake Charles, involving tales of pirates and
buried treasure, began with the arrival of the first French settlers in
the 1760s. The lumber boom, fueled by vast woodlands in the area,
was responsible for the rapid growth of the city in those early years.
Without architects in the area until the early 1900s, the structures
reflect the individual characteristics of the carpenters and builders,
and the “Charpentier Historic District” is named after the carpenters
that built the Victorian homes and mansions in Lake Charles. The
district is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the late 1800s, Sulphur was a sulfur mining haven. In 1907, the
average population of the Sulphur Mines area was 5,000, making it
a town unto itself. This fifty-acre tract of land was then known as the
“richest fifty acres in the world.” By the 1940s, the main focus was
the petrochemical industry, which is still the backbone of the city.
Westlake was originally named “Rio Hondo,” and the area from
Westlake up the Sabine River was also known as “No Man’s Land”
to rustlers, pirates and renegades since it belonged to no one. In the
1800s, settlers came to the area, purchased land and renamed it
Westlake.
DeQuincy has a colorful history as a railroad town. In 1897, the
Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Gulf Railway, now the Kansas City
Southern, reached the point where its main line bent southwest
toward Beaumont and the old Calcasieu River. Vernon & Shreveport
tram line, now the Lake Charles branch of the K.C.S., joined the main
line causing the rise of the town of DeQuincy. Today, you can visit the
DeQuincy Railroad Museum.
The quaint town of Vinton was once traveled by Civil War soldiers.
The soldiers cut a road extending from an area in Vinton known as
“Niblett’s Bluff” on the Sabine River. Area residents often hold reenactments of Civil War battles at Niblett’s Bluff Park.
The history of Iowa is filled with stories of the early Midwestern
Settlers from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa to the French Canadians
(Cajuns) to Jean Lafitte’s pirates along the Old Spanish Trail. The
railroad that cut through this country brought settlers who were lured
to the prairie land for rice farming, raising cattle and, later, oil fields.
MULTICULTURALISM:
The Soul of Southwest Louisiana
Chances are, when you get to Southwest Louisiana, you’ll hear a
rhythm. It’s a beat that makes you feel at home, a beat that emanates
from the people, places and things that you’ll find here.
In Southwest Louisiana, a blend of African-American, American
Indian, French and Spanish heritages mix together to create one of
the state’s most unique cultures. It’s seen in our food, our people,
literature, art, music and everyday family life.
A project of the Black Heritage Festival, the Black Heritage
Gallery is located in Historic Central School and is dedicated to the
presentation of African-American culture and history. The gallery
displays year-round exhibits and educational activities on the positive
contributions of African-Americans to the area. (337) 488-0567.
Kicking off the Festival season is Mardi Gras featuring a number
of prominent lake area African-American krewes. Other festivals of
interest include: the MLK Coalition Festival; the Black Heritage
Festival and Juneteenth (also known as African-American
Emancipation Day) which commemorates the ending of slavery in the
United States.
When you visit Lake Charles/Southwest
Louisiana, the rhythms of Zydeco, blues
and soul are sure to make you tap your
toes or want to cut a rug. Lake Charles/
Southwest Louisiana is the home of the
likes of blues master Clarence “Gatemouth”
Brown, jazz great Nellie Lutcher, and the
“Toot-Toot” Man “Rockin Sidney” Simien.

CRABBING:
Locals and visitors
alike can spend
the day near a
waterway tossing
a string with meat
(locals prefer
chicken necks) tied
to one end to catch fresh blue
crabs for a crab boil. Visitors
can crab at local beaches,
lakes, streams and even on
the sides of highways where
waterways flow. To top it off,
there is no recreational crab
license needed in Louisiana,
so anyone is able to join in on
the fun!
SHELLING:
Fishing, swimming and shelling
can be found along La. Highway
27 and La. Highway 82. This
26-mile stretch of sand is
covered with seashells of all
kinds. You’ll see dozens of shells
like lightening whelks, lettered
olives, Atlantic coquina and even
oysters which wash ashore.

FISHING:
FISHING and/or HUNTING GUIDES:
Bass, crappie and panfish are on the platter for Calcasieu
River and Sabine River. The Sabine River is the better of
the two for quantity of fish, where anglers average 25-50
bass in a half day with fish weighing 1 pound to 1.5 pounds.
However, the Calcasieu River boasts bigger fish with bass
being 1.25 to 1.75 pounds. Spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, trick
worms, craw worms and crankbaits will help anglers lure
in a big one. Saltwater action is great near the saltwater
side of the Saltwater Barrier, the Olin Cut across the ship
channel from the Lake Charles Docks, on the east side of the
I-210 bridge and in Contraband Bayou.

Lake Charles /
Southwest Louisiana’s
Self-Guided Tours
It’s gaming and the great outdoors,
culinary delights and nightlife. It’s
good company and quiet reflections,
historical sites and luxurious
accommodations. It’s a sub-tropical
climate and Southern hospitality all
right here in Southwest Louisiana.
Historic District
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel or one of our many
restaurants featuring the essence of Southwest
Louisiana. Start the day by touring the Historic
Charpentier District, and see such sites as Old
Central School built in 1912 or the intricate
Immaculate Conception Cathedral, both created
by noted New Orleans architects Favrot and
Livaudais. Central School is now a cornerstone
in the Historic District, housing the Mardi Gras
Museum, a six room museum that boasts the
largest Mardi Gras costume display in the
world. Enjoy a visit at the Historic 1911 City
Hall featuring rotating visual arts and cultural
exhibits, presentations and festivals. You can
also explore one of more than 100 cemeteries
throughout Southwest Louisiana including the
Bilbo Cemetery in downtown Lake Charles that
has been maintained for more than 200 years.
Creole Nature Trail All-American Road
Lunch can be an easy decision in Lake Charles / Southwest
Louisiana, whether you’re in the mood for seafood, pasta or just
some good soul food. Your day will continue west to the Sulphur
area where you will not want to miss the Brimstone Museum in the
old Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, with the Henning Cultural
Center next door, which features historical and cultural exhibits.
Continue your tour with Louisiana’s Outback, the Creole Nature
Trail All-American Road. Along this distinctive natural corridor,
you will have the opportunity to experience world-famous wildlife
habitats, alligators and estuaries.
Boudin Trail
Casino Gaming Now that you have had a full day of touring,
sample some of Louisiana’s best cuisine at one
of our many fine dining restaurants. You may
choose a restaurant with more of a local flavor, or
simply dine at one of the casino complexes. Each
casino is home to a multitude of restaurants sure
to fit your budget and appetite. After enjoying a
great meal, let the nightlife begin at one of our
Las Vegas-style casino properties. Southwest
Louisiana is home to Delta Downs Racetrack
Casino & Hotel, the Isle of Capri Casino Hotel,
and L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort.
Napa Valley has wine. New York has pizza. Wisconsin has
cheese. Southwest Louisiana has BOUDIN! Eat your way around
Southwest Louisiana one boudin stop at a time. Boudin in these
parts is made with rice and lots of meat and spices—but with less
liver and parsley like a boudin eater will find in the eastern parts
of the state.
The best way to try them all and find your favorite is to sample
it. The all-new self-guided Boudin Trail will take visitors along
Interstate 10 and its back roads to visit mom and pop food
establishments, specialty meat shops, and grocery stores that
sell boudin both fresh and packaged. Check out the Boudin
Trail at www.visitlakecharles.org/boudintrail or pick up a
brochure at the visitor’s center.

Contraband Days Pirate Festival
Legendary pirate Jean Lafitte is said to have frequented Lake Charles,
docking his boat right along the sandy shores. Rumor has it that he’s
even buried treasure somewhere along its banks. Venture down to
the Lake Charles Civic Center seawall in late April and visit with the
modern-day “pirates,” in full regalia. On the first night of the two-week
long Contraband Days Pirate Festival, witness the cannon fire as
the citizens of Lake Charles try to defend the seawall, only to have
the pirates capture the mayor, put him on trial and make him walk the
plank! Don’t miss the storming of the seawall, walking parades by the
buccaneers, food contests, big name musicians and entertainment,
fireworks and carnival rides!
