What do you do with all those gently-worn clothes that you no longer wear, but are still so impeccable and gorgeous? Closets for Charity, the brainchild of Natur-Tyme owner Wendy Meyerson, is the answer! During the summer of 2010, Wendy was seeking a way to take her gently-used clothing and put them to good use for the community. Sure, there are many organizations that welcome clothing donations, but Wendy was looking for something more!! She developed the concept of an organization focused on offering used name-brand clothing at a deep discount. But, here is the best part--100% of the funds raised by the clothing sales go to a deserving charity. Closets for Charity was born! We showcase Closets for Charity at various Natur-Tyme events, allowing the public and our customers to buy gorgeous, fashionable ensembles at a fraction of the price they would pay were the clothing brand new. Each time, we offer Closets for Charity, we choose one charity to support with all funds raised from the day. By taking omega-3 fish oil, you may lower your risk of metabolic syndrome, improve heart health, protect your brain health, keep your skin glowing and more. the prevalence of metabolic syndrome by more than 20%. • Daily supplementation providing a minimum of 930 mg EPA and 230 mg DHA improves blood vessel function, contributing to lower blood pressure in obese patients. • Low-doses of EPA (180 mg) and DHA (120 mg) prevented increased triglycerides in a group of elderly patients. When higher doses (1,240 mg/day) of EPA and DHA were used, this effect was augmented. What exactly is Omega-3 fish oil? Omega-3s, the major constituents of fish oil, are comprised of two main biologically “active” products: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA and DHA have been the subject of thousands of studies that have proven beneficial in hundreds of health ailments, including arthritis, heart disease, depression, Alzheimer’s, eczema, asthma, and more. Most of these conditions are related to inflammation. Studies show that having enough Omega-3s in your system provides your body with the tools it needs to combat and resolve acute inflammation almost as soon as it is triggered; therefore, Omega-3 fish oil should be seen as part of a prevention or treatment protocol. Research on the following conditions has been particularly impressive. • At-risk obese patients improved their insulin sensitivity and decreased their fasting insulin levels with just 540 mg EPA and 360 mg DHA from fish oil. Heart Health Inflammation is the primary cause of heart problems so it should come as no surprise that Omega-3s are good for the heart. In fact, when fish oil research surged in the 1990s, heart health was one of the main reasons scientists advised us to consider taking fish oil supplements; to this day, studies are published frequently reaffirming the benefits of Omega-3 fish oil for heart health. Consuming a fish oil supplement has shown to: Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome • Decrease risk of arrhythmia Low-grade inflammation is now recognized to be one of the consequences of obesity because fat tissues pump out inflammatory mediators that ultimately trigger many signs of metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, elevated lipids, hypertension, high triglyceride levels to name a few). Highlights from recent literature show that: • Reduce triglyceride levels • Reduce growth rate of fatty plaque in the arteries • Lower blood pressure • Omega-3 supplementation along with a low-fat, highcarbohydrate diet that contained additional EPA/DHA can reduce NutriNeeds Minami Terry Naturally RX Omega-3 Factor Mini-Gels MorEPA Platinum Orange Vectomega EPA/ DHA Complex 200 SFG NT Regular Price: $13.09 60 SFG NT Regular Price: $14.95 60 SFG NT Regular Price: $39.65 60 TABS NT Regular Price: $37.69 Sale Price: $11.19 Sale Price: $12.95 Sale Price: $36.79 Sale Price: $34.45 Fish Oil Omega-3 1000 mg 6 Natural Factors Since 1996, the American Heart Association has been recommending two servings of fish a week for heart health. High-quality fish oil supplements are proven pure by third-party testing labs. When it comes to fish oil supplements, you should definitely avoid big-box store brands and invest in brands that you can trust like Nordic Naturals or Carlson. Brain Health Omega-3 fish oil has proven beneficial to both cognition as well as mood disorders. Fish oil can help with cognition as early as when you are in the embryo. For example, researchers at the University of Western Australia randomly assigned 98 pregnant women to receive either high-dose fish oil (2,200 mg DHA plus 1,100 mg EPA daily) or placebo (olive oil) from 20 weeks of pregnancy until delivery. Although children in both groups had similar growth rates at 2.5 years of age, those whose mothers received fish oil during pregnancy had significantly better eye-hand coordination. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published two recent studies indicating that Omega-3 consumption slows age-related cognitive decline. One study found that a daily dosage of 400 mg of EPA and DHA Omega-3s was protective against decline in cognitive function. The second study followed 2,000 middle-aged adults over nine years; those with higher blood levels of Omega-3s at the end of the study had significantly better verbal fluency than those with low levels. It is believed that DHA in particular could be a key in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. In a 2011 landmark study, 176 healthy adults were given supplements containing DHA. During this time, Wiley’s EPA, DHA, & Cholesterol 30-60 SFG NT Regular Price: $16.99-$21.25 Choose From: The Very Finest Fish OilOrange or Lemon, Super Omega-3 Gems Fish Oil, Omega-3 Gems Elite, Super D Omega-3 Lemon SUPPLEMENTS Renew Life Omega Supplements Choose From: Peak EPA, PreNatal DHA, Cholesterol Support Sale Price: $13.99-$17.49 memory and cognitive function were assessed and compared to a placebo group. After treatment, memory, working memory, and speed of working memory all showed significant improvements for those who consumed the DHA. Several studies show that Omega-3s can help improve mood disorders. For example, scientists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland studied the effect of Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in 49 patients with repeated episodes of harming themselves. In addition to standard psychiatric care, study subjects were randomly assigned to receive 1,200 mg EPA plus 900 mg DHA, or placebo, for 12 weeks. At the end of the treatment period, the group receiving Omega-3 fatty acids had significantly greater improvements compared with the placebo group in scores for depression, suicidality, and daily stresses. Studies also show that low levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in the brain are linked to a depressed mood, hostility, and impulsive behavior. The aforementioned benefits of Omega-3 fish oil are just the tip of the iceberg. EPA and DHA has been shown to decrease joint stiffness for those with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Several studies suggest Omega-3 fatty acids may help protect adult eyes from macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Essential fatty acids also may help proper drainage of intraocular fluid from the eye, decreasing the risk of high eye pressure and glaucoma. Research studies have also shown that Omega-3 fish oil can help support beautiful hair, radiant skin, and healthy nails. We have a wide variety of Omega-3 fish oils that can fit any budget. Natur-Tyme: Creating a Healthier Community, Starting with You! 7 Meet Natur-Tyme’s Bulk Coordinator: Ryan Tucci By Shannon Morehouse, MA, CHHC Purchasing your food in bulk is a great way to save money and it is also kind to the environment by reducing packaging. “This is the best culinary pantry I’ve ever seen,” claims a local chef, referring to Natur-Tyme’s bulk section. A “Q and A” with Ryan Tucci, the bulk coordinator, reveals many wonderful facts about our gem of a bulk station. A Glance at Our Bulk Offerings: Shannon Morehouse: Let’s start by addressing what makes Natur-Tyme’s bulk section unique. - Over 250 herbs & 60 grains - Over 30 types of dried fruit - Over 40 confections - Over a dozen savory snacks - Over 40 types of nuts, seeds, & mixes Ryan Tucci: Where do I begin? Our variety can’t be matched. Our bulk section is extremely hygienic and our products are as fresh as they can possibly be. And our bulk station is staffed to help customers with any questions they may have. Shannon: What is it that makes our bulk products so fresh? Ryan: We generally get two orders in a week of our bulk products and they come in large quantities. I then package each product in an appropriate size cellophane bag and use a heat sealer to make sure it is air-tight. This is so much better than gravity-fed bulk sections, which can lead to products going bad more quickly and can also attract critters. Shannon: Let’s talk about the variety of offerings here. What type of herbs do we offer? Ryan: Pretty much anything you could want. Everything from basics like oregano, basil, thyme, sage, cilantro, parsley, dill weed, and dill seed to blends like curries or one of my newer favorites, Berbere seasoning, an Ethiopian spice blend that has paprika, fenugreek, coriander, cumin, and more. It’s very flavorful. We also have many medicinal herbs. For example, an herb we recently brought in based on a customer’s request, coltsfoot leaf, is a great expectorant, kind of like a natural Mucinex. Sam’s Tea Blend • One Part Red Tea Shannon: We have several types of tea leaves too, right? Ryan: Yes, several. Preparing your tea this way is so much fresher than drinking box tea. You can also use different herbs to make tea. Our supplement educator, Sam Derbyshire has a tasty red tea recipe that is loaded with antioxidants (See recipe at bottom). Shannon: There are many ingredients here that people use for making their own beauty products too. Ryan: Yes, some of the customer favorites include: henna, calendula, beeswax, and French green clay powder. As I interviewed Ryan, several customers came up asking him questions. I was so impressed with his knowledge. Having Ryan available at our bulk section is a huge asset. He’s intelligent, helpful, has a pleasant personality, loves his job, and is available Monday through Thursday. • One Part Hibiscus • One Part Rosehips Take a 3-inch tea ball and make a pitcher of this at a time by filling half of the tea ball with hibiscus and half with red tea. Submerge in a pitcher of water. Put an equal amount of rose hips loose in the water (they’re pretty and edible). Steep in the fridge overnight. Red tea is everything that green tea is known for, without the caffeine. The Hibiscus is good for the kidneys and is a source of vitamin c. The rosehips are full of vitamin c, bioflavonoids, and additional antioxidants. 8 Natur-Tyme: Creating a Healthier Community, Starting with You! Animals speak with each other and with people by using pictures, or mental images. Because our main mode of communication is verbal, we must learn to quiet the mind to receive these images in order to understand what our pets are saying. In addition, animals often communicate with us by taking on our physical and emotional issues in the form of misbehavior and illness to mirror them back to us and show us what we need to change. Come and learn how to better communicate with your four-legged family member along with basic holistic care tips to assist with their physical, mental, and emotional issues. Janet Ridgeway has been working professionally as an animal communicator and animal consultant since 2000, and has her certification in Holistic Health and Nutrition for dogs and cats. She is a Reiki Master, trained in Shamanic healing, Pranic healing, and Pleiadian light work. She teaches classes and workshops in holistic health, animal communication, energy work, meditation, and spiritual development. She is currently working on a non-fiction book about her work with animals and a handbook with holistic tips for pets. Learn more at janetridgeway.com.
